2008 - SEAOSD
2008 EXCELLENCE IN STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING AWARDS The Structural Engineers Association of San Diego (SEAOSD) recently recognized six recipients of the 2008 Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards. Recognition was given for creativity and innovation in design, efficiency in use of materials and labor, suitability of the design to the performance objectives of the project, and addressing any unusual challenges of the project. Project submissions were judged by a panel of three structural engineers: Beth Kueter of Bentley, Don Libby of Martin and Libby, and John Walsh of Walsh Engineering. Special Use Structures Monkey Trails and Forest Tales Architect: Nadel Architects Structural Engineer: Arcon Engineers Contractor: Worley Construction This project involves the complete remodel of the heart of the San Diego Zoo, and is the largest undertaking by the zoo to date. It encompasses an area of 3.5 acres, replacing some of the oldest and most antiquated zoo exhibits. Guests can walk along elevated walkways under the forest canopy and follow gradual ramps, stairs or an elevator to access additional pathways along the forest floor. Historic Preservation Candy Factory Architect: Studio E Architects Structural Engineer: KPFF Consulting Engineers Contractor: TSA Contracting Maintaining much of the original façade, this 3,000square-foot, 3-story, un-reinforced brick building, a rarity in Southern California, has been restored and revitalized. Two staircases, an elevator, a roof deck, interior walls, and skylights were added to enhance the existing structure. It will significantly contribute to the character of the Ballpark District. Retrofit/Alteration The Marketplace at Liberty Station Architect: Nadel Architects Structural Engineer: Curry Price Court Contractor: Legacy Building Services, Inc. Three military barracks and a mess hall were converted into a vibrant retail center and office space while maintaining the character of these historically significant structures. The existing buildings, originally constructed with non-ductile concrete frames and hollow clay tile infill walls, were strengthened in accordance with the State Historic Building Code. New Construction Qualcomm Morehouse Campus Building ‘N’ Architects| Delawie Wilkes Rodrigues Barker Structural Engineer: Hope Engineering Contractor: Roel Construction Building ‘N’ consists of an office tower with a rooftop helistop and an adjacent 534-seat lecture / symphony concert hall. The tower includes a seven-story atrium enclosed by a cable net glass curtain wall. The atrium and lobby form a column-free space of nearly 100 feet by 50 feet, providing a dramatic entry into Qualcomm’s corporate headquarters. New Construction: Certificate of Merit Diamond View Tower Architect: Carrier Johnson Structural Engineer: KPFF Consulting Engineers Contractor: Reno Contracting Diamond View Tower offers gorgeous views of Petco Park, San Diego Bay, and the Coronado Bridge. The podium of the tower complements the historical buildings present with a brick façade, while the spire sports an elegant, contemporary glass and steel skin. Landmark Structures 40 Million Gallon Twin Oaks Reservoir No. 2 Structural Engineer: DYK Inc. Consulting Engineer: Infrastructure Engineering Corp Contractor: DYK Inc. The Vallecitos Water District, located in San Marcos, services approximately 86,650 residents in a 45 square mile area. This project set a new world record as the largest prestressed concrete potable water tank in the world. The District more than doubled their storage capacity on site. Innovative design features such as tapered walls, anchored flexible connections, and posttensioning technology were integrated into the tank.
