One Voice for Laos Volunteers
Enjoy a free multimedia presentation by Ulster County teenagers
and two adults upon their return from volunteer service in the
Deak Kum Pa Orphanage in Luang Prabang, Laos. The group's
service in Laos is the culmination of sixteen (16) months of
awareness building and fundraising in the Hudson Valley.
On Tuesday, July 31 Karma Triyana Dharmachakra (KTD)
Monastery will celebrate the outstanding work of One Voice for
Laos. Buddhist teachings are grounded in "bodhichitta;" the
aspiration to develop kindness and compassion in order to
deliver all beings from suffering. KTD monastery therefore
welcomes and encourages exemplary youth such as One Voice for
Laos teens who give selflessly of their time and talent to

Hello! In two weeks, I will be volunteering as a cabin counselor
at Camp AmeriKids in Warwick, New York. I will be working the
first of the camp's two sessions, which will total about ten days
including travel and orientation. I am so looking forward to being
able to help this organization and meet the kids for the first
time! A little bit about the camp:
"The mission of Camp AmeriKids is to enhance the lives of youth
living with the challenges of HIV/AIDS and sickle cell disease by
providing an enriching summer camp experience, year-round skill
building and a supported transition to adulthood." I'm a little
nervous,as this is the first time I've done anything like this - but
after talking to many other volunteers and having my interview
with the staff, I'm blown away by what the camp offers the
children it serves and so honored to have been selected to be
part of their team this summer. I am asking for your help
sponsoring me in order to cover a portion of my living and travel
expenses during this time. I'm hoping that you will help in
whatever way you can, and I will be donating any funds raised
above and beyond my goal directly to the camp. Even if you can't

Yes, it's me! I'm still in NYC, and I've been happily training as
regularly as I can with the Team for Kids crew in Brooklyn and
in Central Park. Below is an image of me cooling down after a
9-mile run we did, which included crossing the Brooklyn and
Williamsburg Bridges a couple of times. It was a wonderful run, the
first I did with the team, and I enjoyed meeting so many
enthusiastic people. The other is a photo of some of the other
team members.
And when not running with them, I've been running on my own, round
and round the park, or up and down the East River Drive.
Now, I'd like to thank all of you friends and family who have
contributed so generously to the Team for Kids charity.
$380 have been raised so far!
My final goal is $2,620, and I have just a few more months to
go (until October). So here's my latest pitch to ask that those
of you who have not yet contributed might like to--in the US,
your donation is completely tax deductible. If you're concerned about
security or costs on your credit card, you are welcome to send
a check. The instructions for how to do this are on the
TFK website.
Will you continue to help me? Any amount that you or your
friends or colleagues can offer will be a wonderful contribution.

Karl Berger’s Improvisers Orchestra will come to Manhattan's
upper west side to perform at the beautiful El Taller space at
2710 Broadway ( corner of 104th St ) on Tuesday, July 26.
Following a critically-acclaimed run at The Jazz Gallery, and
before that at The Stone, Karl Berger's Orchestra of 20 or more
professional string, horn, and percussion soloists continues to
turn improvisational ideas developed in the 7:30 pm
workshop/rehearsal into a fully formed 9:00 pm orchestral
performance. Using his “Music Mind” concept, Karl introduces a
new approach and experience of harmonizing improvised sound.
Conducted in Karl’s inimitable style, developed at the
legendary Creative Music Studio, this orchestra of extraordinary
improvisers explores original themes, melodies from the world’s
folk traditions and compositions written by legendary
improvisers such as Don Cherry or Ornette Coleman, as well as
musical ideas that arise spontaneously. One of the orchestra's
trademarks is Ingrid Sertso’s uncanny vocalization and poetry.
Karl Berger’s Improvisers Orchestra has a rotating cast of
soloists, with a solid core of regulars. Players for this El Taller
performance are: Warren Smith, drums, Hollis Headrick,
percussion, John Pietaro, percussion, Hill Greene, bass, David

The Creative Music Foundation, Inc was founded by Karl
Berger, Ingrid Sertso and Ornette Coleman as a not-for-profit
support for the vision of a world view and common ground of
music beyond styles and categories. Out of this vision grew the
now legendary Creative Music Studio (CMS). For nearly two
decades, the Creative Music Studio was considered to be the
premier center for the study of creative music.
All net proceeds support the Creative Music Studio’s Archive
Project, the preservation and re-mastering of over 400 historic
CMS recordings from the 70s and 80s of some of the finest

I'm going through a time when family is calling for my
full attention. Over the last several months my husband and
I have supported our family through a challenging time that
culminated in the death of my mother-in-law this past Tuesday at
age 88.
Times like these are full of lessons. Wanted to share with you a
few things that my mother-in-law's profound life — and death —
have taught me. I hope these have value for you, as well:
1. People underestimate their impact. As I sat down to write
some words to share at the service, I discovered that the most
difficult parts of my relationship with my mother-in-law had led
to some profound shifts in my life for which I am incredibly
grateful. Upon reflection I find this is true of the difficult
relationships I've experienced in business, as well.
2. Tough times and tough people make us stronger. The
challenges we face force us to get clear about who we are and
what we believe in. People who push us in both positive and
negative ways are our teachers. They give us the opportunity to
stand firmly in our beliefs and learn to have a relationship even
when we disagree.
3. Everything comes to go. Nothing lasts forever and although
painful, that's exactly as it should be. Impermanence is the way
of life and in many ways what gives everything its value.
Whether in family or business, expecting and embracing and
trusting change makes for a completely different experience of
life than fighting, hating and resisting it.
4. Honor the process. There is a tremendous amount of wisdom
out there from people who have trodden these paths before us.
We can learn so much from other's experience and from spiritual
practices that relate to loss and mourning and returning to life,
whether we are talking about the tremendous loss of a loved one
or the more mundane yet still impactful losses we experience
daily in business and life. Sometimes the best thing we can do is
look for guidance and go with the flow.
I hope you'll let someone know the impact they've had on you,
take a moment to appreciate what you've got, and make the
most of the next few weeks until we connect again.
