Dear All,
Welcome to the May edition of the Newsletter. Isn’t it lovely to know that
Summer is just around the corner? We hope you are enjoying the warmer
days and the longer evenings.
As usual we have tried to bring you interesting and informative news but if you
would like to see something specific in your Newsletter please let us know or
write something for us. We will do our best to print it for you.
Meanwhile, please make a note of the advertised
events you want to join in with and don’t forget
to return your booking form to the office as soon
as possible as sometimes we need to run a
“reserve” list for our popular occasions.

Thank you to Willow Glade Social Club for their donation of £100 raised through raffles
and other events.
Reigate Probus Club nominated us to receive £150 from their Charity Fund. Thank
you so much for thinking of us.
Thank you to the Staff and regular customers of the White Lion Pub in Redhill for their
continued support and lovely donation of £156.77 which was raised through loose
change contributions. Our contact being one of our wonderful Volunteers, Frank
McKeown.
The Donyngs Indoor Bowls Club. Mr Roger Battley, Chairman—thank you all very
much for nominating us as your Charity of the Year and the absolutely wonderful
donation of £1,000.
BIG BAND NIGHT FUNDRAISING EVENT
Featuring The Phoenix Concert Band of Sutton
Our fundraising event was held on 12th March 2016 and we are
really pleased to report that £509.60 was raised on the night.
Thank you so much to everyone who attended the evening and
thank you once again to the Phoenix Concert Band of Sutton for
giving us their time for such a lovely evening.
Thank you to Winterbotham Darby for their continued support
with the donation of the lovely ham and pudding for the
ploughmans supper which was enjoyed by all.

CHARITY AUCTION IN AID OF LIVE AT HOME
A friend of LAH, Rex Giles, is arranging the above
event on SATURDAY 4th JUNE at REDHILL
METHODIST CHURCH. Please note that viewing is
from 11.00am with the auction being held between
12.00pm and 2.00pm.
He is hoping that there will be at least 50 lots covering
antiques, crockery, clocks/watches, militaria, books,
vintage toys, memorabilia, etc, so there should be
something for everyone and with lots starting at just £1 (with no reserve on
any of the lots) something for every pocket.
Please do come along and support this fun event. You will be supporting a
really good cause and you may even go home with a real bargain!

HEALTHWATCH SURREY
Healthwatch Surrey want to know what is going on in health and care
service throughout Surrey. They want to hear the good and the bad. They
will tell services about your experiences of health and care and hold them to
account. They are independent, transparent and accountable and they are
powerful – they have the strength of the law and the national influence of
Healthwatch England behind them.

QUALITY STREET FAYRE
It is with regret that we have decided not to be represented at the Quality Street
Fayre this year. The reason is that the date clashes with the Reigate Community
Festival which runs all day and we feel that it would be asking too much of our busy
Volunteers for help at both events. For more information about this event, please see
below.
REIGATE COMMUNITY FESTIVAL – SATURDAY 2nd JULY.
This annual event will be held in Priory Park between 10.30 and 5.00. It is usually a
really enjoyable event with lots of people attending and a huge array of things to see
and do. We have agreed to have a stall again this year to promote Live at Home to a
wider audience and in the past we have attracted both new Members and new
Volunteers this way.
If you think you would like to come along and help by taking a “slot” – even an hour
would help – please do contact the office, letting us know when you are free to come
along. We hand out leaflets and sell raffle tickets but the main “task” is to chat to as
many people as possible about LAH. It is a fun day and you could very easily combine
helping us with seeing everything else that will be happening.

MAKE IT GROW!
If you had £10—how could you make it grow for LAH? Hosting a coffee morning or
an afternoon tea on behalf of LAH. Maybe a garden party! Younger volunteers may
be interested in doing a ‘car wash’ to raise money. Use £10 to buy ingredients or
necessities and from there turn it into more money for the Reigate & Redhill Live at
Home Scheme. For more information ring the office on 01737 780610.
VOLUNTEERS – SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT!
Have you got a passion for thinking up ideas to raise money? Would you be
interested in joining a few other like-minded people to meet occasionally to talk
about fun and interesting ways to raise much needed funds for LAH?
Unfortunately, as we all know, the cost of everything goes up all the time! At LAH
we do all we can to keep costs as low as possible so that as many people as possible
can join in with our events and activities and to be able to do this for as long as
possible it is necessary for us to keep up the momentum of active fundraising.
If you would like to talk about this to one of the staff (with no initial commitment)
please do give us a call. We would love to hear from you!!
LEGACIES
Most of us do not want to think about the end of our lives whilst we are still enjoying
living them. But we do know that it is wise to make certain plans whilst we can (like
making a Will or what sort of funeral we would like) to save our family or next-of-kin
having to make difficult decisions after our death. One decision we can make known is
whether we wish to leave a legacy to a favourite charity. Here at LAH we would value
greatly any final donation you might choose to make to us and should you wish to talk
about this to our Treasurer please call the office so that we can help put you in touch
with him. Thank you.

THE MENS’ CLUB
A jolly band of Members and Volunteers meet monthly on
a Monday to enjoy male company and conversation which
is helped along by a delicious meal and a pint (or two) in
the local area. These meetings are arranged for us by one
of our lovely Volunteers (David) who would be very
pleased to welcome new people. You do, of course, have
to be a man!! If you think you would like to join them,
please do give the office a ring on 01737 780610.
Would anyone be interested in becoming a driver for our Men’s Club. We will

CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS
VOLUNTEERS’ INDUCTION AND THANK YOU LUNCH –
Friday 10th June.
We need all of our Volunteers to attend an induction
course or refresher, but to soften the blow we provide
free food!! Many of you have attended before and it is lovely for new Volunteers to
meet existing ones and for them to share their experiences. Please put the above
date in your diary. The time is 11.00am to 1.00pm at Redhill Methodist Church and
the booking form is enclosed. Let’s celebrate National Volunteers’ Week together!

TAXI VOUCHERS
Please note, if you are eligible for taxi vouchers
we have application forms in the office. If you
telephone (01737 780610) to request one we
can either send it to you or give it to you at the
next outing or event you attend.
HEARING AIDS
Redhill – Alan and Elizabeth are usually available between
2.00 and 3.00 at the Redhill Methodist Church on the first
Wednesday of each month. If you would like to pop in to
collect some batteries for your (NHS) hearing aid please do
contact the office first, just to make sure that Alan or
Elizabeth will be visiting us.
SUMMARY OF THE MEMBERS’ SURVEY
We had some very positive feedback from our survey although not as many got
returned as we had hoped for. Please be assured that we do listen to any views or
suggestions expressed.
However, 100% of those who responded said that they were happy with Staff and
Volunteers. Also, over 65% of our Members felt less isolated and had made new
friends as a result of joining Live at Home.
One comment sums up how much the Volunteers and Staff are valued: “You all do a
wonderful job and I am full of admiration for your cheerful patience with us all”.
Well done everyone!!

GOOD NEWS – LAUNCH OF DECAF
At Silvermere, Woodlands Road, Redhill
On Friday 1st April the Mayor of Reigate and
Banstead Cllr Joan Spiers launched our new
service called “Decaf”. Lots of people attended
and there were refreshments, a very tasty
celebratory cake (made especially for the event by
Karen) and live entertainment.
This is a dementia café for people with a diagnosed memory difficulty and their
carer with refreshments and a varied programme of appropriate activities
provided each week. If you, or someone you know, would be interested in
hearing more about Decaf with a view to joining please contact the office on
01737 780610 to receive more information. Please note that attendance can
only be after an initial assessment by one of the Staff and membership of LAH.

We have had a few new Members
recently which is great, but we

MEMBER INTERVIEW
JUNE GOLDSMITH
What did you do in your working life? Can you tell me a little about the
job(s) you did?
I was a G.P.O. operator for G.P.O. Because of the war, I was sent on loan to
‘Port of London Authority’ and also the National Deck Labour Board. I
stayed there for 7/8 years. There was a giant switchboard with 12 or so
girls operating it—all doing shift work. I enjoyed it very much.
Where is the most interesting place you have visited or who is the most
interesting person you have met.
I have been to Venice. I have been camping all over Europe and my
favourite place for camping was the South of France. I had an invitation
from Shane Ritchie (the Eastenders star) to his wedding because my friend,
Faye, was the grandmother of the bride.
Please tell me something we don’t already know about you.
My favourite past time is listending to Andre Rieu, the famous conductor.
Every year I go to Nottingham to see him in concert.

BOB HARE
What did you do in your working life? Can you tell me a little about the
job(s) you did?
After Grammar School, I did my National Service—2nd British Regiment—to
be equipped with guarded missions! Then I began a computer engineer
company called Leo Computers based in Acton. I worked on site fixing
computers down to component level. I retired on Senior Management Level.
Where is the most interesting place you have visited or who is the most
interesting person you have met?
I have been to lots of place but the most interesting place is Sark on the
Channel Islands and Guernsey. Sark is the place where my lovely, special
wife was born. The most interesting people were my wife’s family who told
me all about the occupation of Guernsey. One story was about a German
soldier who smuggled bread and food to my in-laws family and, had he been
caught, he would have been shot!
Please tell me something we don’t already know about you.
I once formed a “skiffle group” which played regularly at the local Town Hall
Saturday dance. Lastly, I met my wife, Shirley, on a blind date.

The Live at Home Initiative is part of Methodist Homes for the Aged which is
a major national voluntary organisation founded by the Methodist Church
in 1943 to care for older people in need. Now, more than 60 years later,
we offer residential care, dementia care, sheltered housing and Live at
Home support, to over 5,000 older people. Although Methodist Homes has
links with the Methodist Church, our services are available to any older
person in need – not just Methodists.
