Be Prepared
Louis Pasteur coined the famous phrase “chance favors the prepared mind,” and any
successful businesswoman can tell you there is much truth in that. Forming a business plan,
getting legal and financial needs in place, and preparing a backup plan that can see her business
through difficulties are important elements of ensuring success.
In the 2016 issue of Coulee Region Women Business & Resource Directory, we’ll introduce you
to local women who not only run smart and successful businesses, but who can help you be
prepared for whatever comes your way as well. Here, you’ll meet women who can help you
save for future needs, protect your family, heal your body and weather legal storms. You’ll meet
women who can help you be prepared in other ways, by creating a beautiful home, ensuring
your pets’ needs are met and promoting your own business or nonprofit. By living out her
passion to serve, each woman here can help you reap the rewards of being prepared.
And what are these rewards? Our article on page 6, “Surviving and Thriving,” illuminates the
benefits of being prepared—in business and in life—and walks you through the steps required
to protect yourself and your business should the unexpected occur.
You can read about this—and much more—in this issue of the Coulee Region Women Business
& Resource Directory. Also useful are our categorized business listings and a thorough listing
of area resources and nonprofit organizations that can help connect you both professionally
and personally. If you are interested in joining a networking group, are seeking a community
service or looking an opportunity to become involved in our community, this section will
point you in the right direction.
We hope you’ll find the Coulee Region Women Business & Resource Directory a useful, easy way
to find the services you need in the Coulee Region. You can also find the directory online at www.
crwmagazine.com. We hope it helps you be prepared for all your business and personal needs.

SURVIVING & THRIVING
Learn how to protect your business if disaster strikes.
BY JULIE NELSON
August 25, 2015, started as a regular
day for Mike and Joan Gazeley of La Crosse.
Joan enjoyed the sunny weather as she ran
errands, and Mike stopped into the business
they own, the Bluffside Tavern, “just to
check on things.” Three minutes after
Mike walked in the door, the couple’s lives
changed completely.
If you’ve been in the Coulee Region
long, you probably know what happens
next in this story: An out-of-control truck
crashed into the bar, leaving the Gazeleys
with a gaping hole and an unusable
building.
For a good two months after that, the
Bluffside was out of business. The Gazeleys’
income source came to a halt, the people
they regularly came in contact with were
not around and their day-to-day routine
changed considerably. Statistics show
that 40 percent of business owners who

experience a disaster never open their doors

back are the ones who had a plan.
tug-of-war with the insurance companies,”
Mike says it’s the insurance money that’s
allowing them to rebuild.
Update your insurance
Protect your information
“The number one step you can take is
to make sure your insurance is up to date,”
says Lori Getter, the spokesperson for
the Wisconsin Emergency Management
agency. “One of the saddest circumstances
I encounter is when I meet with people
after a disaster who purchased insurance 10
years ago and haven’t looked at it since. The
policy they’ve been maintaining all these
years no longer meets today’s needs.”
Mike Gazeley concurs. He says he is
fortunate that Joan handles the financial
side of the business, and she was well versed
on what insurance policies they had. Hours
after the crash, Joan was on the phone with
insurance adjusters. And while “it’s always a
Another factor that’s allowing the
Gazeleys to get back in business is their
contacts. After living in La Crosse for so
many years, they knew exactly whom they
needed to call—from the lumber company
that immediately patched the hole in their
wall to the vendors who would not need
to deliver beer the next day. Mike says
one lesson he learned in this disaster was
to make sure all necessary contact names
and phone numbers are written down
and accessible to others. Had he been
sent to the hospital after the truck hit, his
employees would have needed to know
where to start.
Getter encourages businesses to go one

step further and store critical information in multiple locations,
one of which is at least 30 miles away. That way, if a flood comes, a
tornado hits or an oil train explodes, the information is still intact
if your building or even an entire neighborhood is wiped out.
Getter says many businesses take advantage of cloud data storage.
Make a plan
Brenda Hanson teaches businesses to be ready if disaster strikes.
As La Crosse County’s Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, she
points out that the ratio of emergency responders to the number
of people in the county is actually very small. So if your emergency
plan is to wait until help arrives, you may be out of luck. She
encourages business owners and employees to empower themselves
by being ready, both at home and at work.
“Know what your key operations are. Do you need a loading
dock, a kitchen or access to the Internet?” says Hanson. “If one
or more of these are knocked out for a day, a week or longer, do
you have an idea of how you might get the job done?” She says
knowing other businesses you might collaborate with will give you
options in an unexpected situation.
In the Coulee Region, for example, a huge snow or ice storm
has the ability to change our daily operations with minimal
warning. Would you know how to contact all your employees to
tell them to stay home one day? If some or all of your employees
had to stay overnight, would you have blankets, water or food for
them? What if someone is stranded in a company vehicle—is there
an emergency kit in the vehicle that can keep them alive until help
arrives? Even if you’re at home and the power goes out, can you
find a flashlight with batteries? Do you have any nutritious food
that doesn’t have to be heated?
business to recover. The Bluffside, for example, buys pizzas from a
small, local vendor. The sooner the Bluffside is selling pizzas again, the
sooner that pizza business will recoup its lost sales.
Gazeley says being a part of the Coulee Region community is a
benefit in itself. “I’ve had so many offers of help,” he says. “It makes
me very proud to live in La Crosse.” crw
As an employee of The Salvation Army, Julie Nelson has been
part of developing an emergency plan to provide services in case of
disaster. She’s also gotten really good at fire drills.

Where to begin
Emergencies can be small, such as a temporary power outage,
or they can be devastating, like the tornado that wiped out Joplin,
Missouri. Hanson says trying to make a plan for every contingency is
overwhelming. But she says you need to start somewhere. She suggests
downloading one of the lists published by emergency management
agencies and picking some “low-hanging fruit.” She advises, “Find an
easy task on the list that you can do or delegate, and do it. Set a goal
to get it done in a month. Then next month, pick another item from
the list.”
Hanson adds that the best plan in the world is of no value if
no one knows about it. Having an employee lunch where you all
brainstorm ideas or talk about the plans can be an effective tool to
keep everyone in the loop. Good old-fashioned fire drills and tornado
drills can someday save a life.
Hanson says planning for emergencies empowers you as a business
owner or employee, and it also helps build community resilience.
The sooner one business can bounce back, the easier it is for another

FINE JEWELRY
Since the age of 15, Heidi Rose-Alberts wanted
a career in the jewelry industry. She loved the
products, but mostly she loved the people. “It’s
fun to work with individuals who are in love and
celebrating,” she says.
Throughout high school, she worked for her
family business, Rose Jewelers in downtown La
Crosse, started by her great-great-grandfather in
1856. She worked there while she earned a degree
in marketing from the University of WisconsinLa Crosse.
Upon graduation in 2001, Heidi and her
brother, Jon, left for Carlsbad, California, and the
Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Upon
completing that program in 2002, she became a
Graduate Gemologist and a Certified Insurance
Appraiser. With her training complete, she
returned home to the business and the people she
loved.
Because Rose Jewelers has been a part of this
community for so long, Heidi admits that the
Rose family celebrates right along with customers,
many of whom they have known for generations.

Angela Bartow is the owner of
two upscale resale home goods and
furniture boutiques in Onalaska: Savvy
Home Consignments and the recently
opened Savvy 2. After relocating back
to the La Crosse area, Angela found
the opportunity to retire her real estate
career and utilize her schooling in
interior design to fill a niche market.
Founded in 2012, the two Savvy
boutiques offer 8,000 sq. ft. of upscale
resale home décor, furniture and local
art, on one destination street. Customers
and consignors love the affordable
prices, the vast selection of quality
décor, the ease of consignment and
their quickly accumulating proceeds. By
shopping Savvy, you’re supporting 3,000
local consignors, reducing your carbon
footprint and getting an exceptional
deal on home décor. Angela attributes
the success of the boutiques to her
mission of excellent customer service,
a supportive community and husband,
her outstanding staff and her faith. You
can shop Savvy on Facebook and find

LET’S WORK TOGETHER
Lifelong learning takes many
forms—acquiring valued skills,
completing a degree, pursuing
an advanced degree, gaining
a certification, and more. The
benefits, however, go beyond
tangible career advancement.
Lifelong learning is an enriching
activity which can lead to
personal fulfillment, new and
stronger relationships, increased
ability to adapt to change, and
the discovery and cultivation of
your natural strengths.
Is now the right time for you?
Call or visit us on the web today.
Let’s work together to find out.

Keeping ahead of the closely scrutinized and changing laws is something Dawn and Tina take to heart in helping their customers get the
