GET YOUR GLASS IN GEAR!
MAY 1 2, 2015
&
Dear Friends,
We welcome you to the 20th Anniversary of St. Louis Microfest! The event has
grown immeasurably since we started 20 years ago and we couldn’t do it without the
support from all of you. To celebrate this special occasion we have teamed up with
local breweries and homebrew clubs to bring you 20 Festival Beers. You will find the
listing included in this program book. I encourage you to seek out the Festival Beers,
raise your glass and cheers to 20 years!
Since 1988, Lift for Life Gym has worked with inner-city youth, ages 8 – 18, to lay
a strong foundation for success in school and in life. Located in North St. Louis, the
gym currently helps over 400 youth to strengthen their bodies, enrich their minds,
and learn to make positive life choices. The safe, enriching environment is made
possible through donations and fundraising events like Microfest.
I would like to acknowledge our staff, Board of Directors, committee members,
event sponsors, breweries, and event volunteers for their time, efforts, and continued
support. They have helped Microfest grow over the years which in turn has helped
shape the lives of our gym youth and provided a brighter future for them.
Be sure to explore every area of our festival as it offers more and more enjoyment for
our event attendees each year. Have a wonderful time and please remember to be
safe and drink responsibly.
Sincerely,
Joseph Miller

FRIDAY, MAY 1
Session I: 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Bill Forness and One More Round
- A Tribute to Johnny Cash
6:00 – 7:30 p.m.
Bill Forness & One More Round, a Tribute to Johnny Cash are sweeping
the country with the iconic sounds of legendary Johnny Cash. Celebrating
the life and music of one of the most influential musicians of our time, Bill
Forness has mastered the essence of a real Johnny Cash performance. With a
deep baritone voice and a theatrical stage presence, Bill Forness & One More
Round has become the most sought after Johnny Cash Tribute act anywhere!
Bill Forness & One More Round perform a theatrical tribute to the ‘Man
In Black’ with an authentic stage presence Johnny Cash fans deserve! The
show delivers hits from the 1950’s onward. Most notably “Ring of Fire”,
“Folsom Prison Blues”, “I Walk The Line”, “Boy Named Sue”, and the
Grammy winning “Jackson” which includes band member Brittney Sheffer
as June Carter. Keeping in the tradition of Johnny’s Sun Records releases and
America’s favorite duets, including the 1990’s music from Johnny’s American
Recordings, Bill Forness & One More Round deliver the Rock N Roll-BluesRockabilly-Folkin-Gospel iconic sounds of Johnny Cash!
Rachel Lipsky
7:45 p.m. – 9:45 p.m.
Rachel Lipsky has a sound that nestles in nicely somewhere between high
heeled country sass and southern rock based country, she is poised for
greatness. Not only can she share the fan bases of
artists ranging from Gretchen Wilson to Carrie
Underwood to Miranda Lambert, she has a style
that both fits what is happening and is markedly all
her own.
2014 has taken Rachel and her music out of
Nashville and on the road in and out of the country
to shows that include (but are not limited to) Taste of
Country festival in New York where she opened for
Thomas Rhett and Hank Williams Jr, Country Jam
Colorado where she opened for Lady Antebellum,
the Headwaters Country Jam in Montana where
she opened for The LoCash Cowboys and Dustin
Lynch, headlined the Lawler Irish Fest in Iowa, she was recently crowned
the new Pepsi Southern Original getting to open for Neal McCoy and Blake
Shelton at the Gulf Coast Jam in Florida and has been invited to go overseas
again at the end of this year by the Armed Forces Entertainment.
SATURDAY, MAY 2
One Take
Session II: 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm
12:00 – 1:40 p.m.
One Take is out of St. Louis, Missouri, but spends much of their time on
the road. Building on the traditions of reggae,
Americana, jazz and blues, they will surprise you
with their diversity. They were voted Best Folk
Artist in 2012 by the Riverfront Times, St. Louis’
primary entertainment publication, but their
broad repertoire blends everything from rock to
soul, with a heavy dose of island music.
North of the Quarter
2:30 – 4:00 p.m.
American music was born in the French
Quarter in New Orleans, coming up
the Mississippi to the rest of the country
and beyond. North of the Quarter
follows the same path up the river.
They start with some funky brass from
NOLA, add some blues from Memphis
and Chicago, throw in some Detroit
rhythm, and end up with a sound that
is uniquely St. Louis.
SATURDAY, MAY 2
Session III: 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Marquise Knox Band
6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
Born in 1991 in St. Louis, MO, Marquise
hails from a musical family deeply entrenched
in the Blues. He recently released his third
album, Here I Am. “When you listen to
Marquise- 19 years old when he recorded this
title- you get the sense that this is what those
masters must have sounded like as young
men. Marquise’s blues are so transparent and
bare. It’s so easy to feel his music as totally
legitimate. That’s, above all, what makes it so appealing. That’s what makes
Marquis Knox special. He’s the whole package. A throwback blues master on
the rise.
Flying House
8:00 – 10:00 p.m.
Flying House is a modern pop/rock
band with elements of of Brit-Pop,
Classic Rock ‘n roll, European and
American Folk. Formed by James Ibur,
Flying House is made up of members
from St. Louis-based bands who were
making waves in the 90’s including
Five of These, Bella Wolf, Giant Desert
Gerbils, Mary’s Dream and Cobalt
Blue. The Flying House sound is both
retro and modern borrowing flavors from late 60’s psychedelic rock/pop,
modern rock/pop and a dash of world beat influence.

changed to Duvel or Devil in Flemish due to its clean drinkability and deceiving

incredibly dry, delicate, and fragrant Doc’s Draft Hard Pear Cider, to the tremendous
Doc’s Framboise, which is a dessert beverage that is on par with any dessert wine out

EVIL TWIN BREWING
The brainchild of multi-talented beer aficionado Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø, this small
Danish gypsy brewing outfit commenced operations in the summer of 2010. In its
first three years on the scene, the Evil Twin has unleashed a mind-boggling 100+
new beers for commercial release, and they’ve
done so without they’re own brewery, using
space from their friends wherever and whenever
they can get. An imperial black & tan made
in Scotland, check. An imperial IPA aged in
Chardonnay barrels brewed in Holland, check. A
belgian-style strong blond ale brewed on a remote island of Denmark, and then aged
in 10 different high-end spirits barrels from around the world, check. Indeed, there
is virtually nothing Evil Twin hasn’t attempted. But more impressive still is that there
is exceedingly little that Evil Twin hasn’t perfected. The culmination of the accolades
no doubt reached its current pinnacle this year, when Evil Twin Brewing achieved
the rank of 10th best brewer in the world (and top non-U.S. brewer in the world)
according to Ratebeer’s annual list.

F IRESTONE WALKER
It began innocently enough: a couple of brothers-in-law sitting around debating the
subject of good and bad beer. Instead, their search for a decent ale led them to brew
their own. Given Mr. Firestone’s winemaking bias and Mr. Walker’s complete lack
of fermentation experience, they believed 60-gallon oak barrels were the appropriate
vehicle in which to create their perfect elixir.
OK, so initial attempts were forgettable. But like so many great ideas, out of that
disaster was born a handy invention – the Firestone Union. Based on classic brewing
traditions from Burton-Upon Trent, this bizarre and unlikely system of linked
barrels has the ability to produce rich and complex ales. In 1996 the accidental duo
shelved their endless discussion on better beers and settled for building a world-class
brewery that bore their names on California’s Central Coast……the debate was now
over.

NEW BELGIUM BREWING
1989. Belgium. Boy on bike. (OK, make that a young man of 32).
As our aspiring young homebrewer rides his mountain bike with “fat
tires” through European villages famous for beer, New Belgium Brewing
Company was but a glimmer in his eye. Or basement. For Jeff Lebesch
would return to Fort Collins, Colorado with a handful of ingredients and an
imagination full of recipes. And then there was beer. Jeff’s first two basement-brewed
creations? A brown dubbel with earthy undertones named Abbey and a remarkably
well-balanced amber he named Fat Tire. To say the rest was history would be to
overlook his wife’s involvement. Kim Jordan was New Belgium’s first bottler, sales
rep, distributor, marketer and financial planner. And now, she’s our CEO.

REDSTONE MEADERY

that he produce the highest quality honey wine on the market. Because of this
‘philosophy of mead’, Redstone does not cork (to avoid oxidation) but instead uses
swing top bottles. This ensures the mead will not breathe while cellaring plus offers a
much longer shelf life once the bottle has been opened. In keeping with the ‘natural’
approach, Redstone does not add any sulfites, a known allergen, as honey is it’s own
natural preservative. Redstone only pasteurizes the must (unfermented mead) and
never boils. The company strives to feature the flavors of the fermentable as much as
possible.

For the first 35 years of his life, Jim Koch’s family history and
his future career lay in the attic of his parent’s house. Jim’s
father Charles Koch, a fifth generation brewer, had left the
business but kept the old family beer archives upstairs in an
old trunk. The recipes hadn’t been used since the Louis Koch
brewery closed during Prohibition and when American tastes
went away from full flavored beers.

SKA BREWING
Somewhere out in Colorado, in the year nineteen hundred and
ninety-five, two guys named Dave and Bill learned that while they
loved gulping down good beer, they weren’t yet old enough to buy
it. They figured an answer to their quandary would appear if they
drank enough and listened to enough thinking music, also known as Ska. On the
second Skaturday of Skatember it hit them. If they brewed their own beer they’d
have all the beer they could ever want. And while they were at it, why not brew the
most magnificent suds ever quaffed in their neck of the woods…or any other neck

Summit Brewing Company is a regional craft brewery in St. Paul,
Minnesota, that brews a wide selection of popular beers. It is sometimes
mistakenly believed to be a microbrewery, even though Summit’s
output is in the top 50 of breweries in the United States, approximately
80,000 barrels of beer per year. The brewery was founded in 1986 by local brewer
Mark Stutrud and a group of his friends in an old auto parts warehouse on St. Paul’s
University Avenue. Their beers quickly became local favorites, and the company
began to grow rapidly. By 1998, the company’s beer production had exceeded the
capacity of the original University Avenue brewery, and a new brewery was built on
the west end of St. Paul, overlooking the Mississippi River. •Hopvale

TALLGRASS BREWING COMPANY
Four years and several months ago Jeff & Tricia Gill brought forth a

dedicated to the proposition that NO beers are created equal and all
people deserve great-tasting craft beers. Jeff, a recovering geologist and
an avid homebrewer realized he liked brewing beer more than he dug rocks, so with
the help of his wife, friends and family, Tallgrass was born. In 2010 Tallgrass threw
off the heavy burden of bottles and embraced the enlightened attitude of craft beer
in cans.

TWO BROTHERS BREWING COMPANY
Two Brothers Brewing Company was founded by Jim and Jason Ebel in late
1996. The business was envisioned by the brothers based on their entry into
entrepreneurship with The Brewer’s Coop, a retail store catering to home beer
and wine making. In 1992 The Brewer’s Coop opened its doors in Naperville, IL
selling retail ingredients and equipment for the homebrewing community. The
more they were surrounded by brewing, the more passionate they became about
opening their own microbrewery. In early 1996 they decided to take the plunge and
started writing a business plan. Several months later their dream became reality. Two
Brothers Brewing Company is still 100% family owned.

WILD ONION BREWING COMPANY
Lake Barrington, Illinois - Founded in 1995
“Wild Onion” is a tribute to the original name for Chicago, so named
for the wildly aromatic onions that grew along the local rivers and
streams of the area hundreds of years ago. Brothers Mike and John Kainz
opened the Wild Onion Brewery in 1995 with the “wild” ambition to produce
the finest beers in the Chicagoland area. And that they have done. The beers are
immaculate in structure and have turned into the shining stars of the Chicagoland
beer scene.

WILLIAM K BUSCH BREWING COMPANY
Kräftig and Kräftig Light are classic, lager-style beers. They’re made
using an all-natural, all-malt brewing process, and only the four basic
ingredients preferred in the making of fine German beer: water, malted
barley, yeast and hops. In Kräftig’s case, those ingredients are simply the
best available to any brewer. The result of this commitment to quality and respect
for classic brewing are two beers worthy of the heritage of the William K. Busch
Brewing Company - Kräftig and Kräftig Light.
