WOODWORKER’S
DIRECTORY
W
ell, here you are in
the best place in the
world, your warm, cosy
workshop with the doors open to
let in the spring sunshine. With a
copy of your favourite woodworking
magazine laid out on the workshop
bench, you are assembling what
you need to make a project that has
taken your eye.
Hmm... the timber you picked
up last year won’t quite do because
the boards aren’t long enough... you
can’t remember when you last had
the glue open... your chisels should
have been replaced years ago... oh,
Derek Jones, Furniture &
Cabinetmaking
and you really must invest in a fullface shield because there’s a lot of
routing involved, speaking of which,
have you got the necessary cutters?
That’s a lot of stuff to acquire
when all you want to do is get on
with the job, and an awful lot of
sourcing for suppliers, prices,
delivery times etc, but hang on a
minute... that’s what Woodworker’s
Directory is all about. What we
hope to have produced for you
here is a sort of Yellow Pages
for woodworkers. We invited
manufacturers, suppliers and
service providers to list their
Mark Baker, Woodturning
products in an easy-to-fi nd format
and the result is an encyclopedia
of top names and brands listed
where you would expect to fi nd
them, giving you the best chance
of securing exactly what you need
when you need it.
We hope that you will fi nd
Woodworker’s Directory useful and
that you will want to keep it by the
phone or by your bench, to provide
a readily accessible resource of
contact details that will enable you
to get on with the job in hand.

Abrasives
S
TOP TIPS:
anding is the fi rst and most
critical step in the fi nishing
process, and a beautifully executed
piece of work can be damaged by
incorrect sanding.
Abrasives can be simply defi ned
as materials that are used to shape,
smooth, sculpt, or fi nish an object
by rubbing, resulting in wear to
the surface.
They come in a variety of forms,
so choose a product that is suited
to the project you are working on.
There is also a wide range of grits
available, from coarse to very fi ne.
1. Choose abrasives with flexible
backing material for accessibility
around small design elements
2. Stearate coatings significantly
reduce loading, but do not
eliminate it. If you’re working
with oily exotics, you will
appreciate using stereate-coated
abrasives
3. When you stop to change grits,
residual dust and abrasive is left
on the surface. By removing this
residue, you reduce heat loading
and can cut more efficiently

One of the latest innovations
from Klingspor Abrasives is the
introduction of ACT (Advanced
Coating Technology) for
woodworking. Through the new
ACT technology, the clogging of
the abrasive during processing is
noticeably reduced. The core problem
in woodworking is not the wear of the
abrasive grain but the fact that wood
shavings ‘clog’ the abrasive, reduce
the aggressiveness and finally, render
the abrasive useless

dhesives form a fundamental
part of modern woodworking.
They not only form chemical
bonds with the material it is
applied to – some can gap fi ll,
foam, be waterproof and much
more – but are far cries from the
products of yesteryear.
All these allow us to do things
quicker, more efficiently, and
with more consistent results than
previously possible.
Not any old adhesive will do
all jobs; pick the right adhesive
for the job at hand by following

Adhesives
Carving
TOP TIPS:
1. Make sure the mating surfaces
are clean and debris free
before applying adhesive
2. Dry fit all joints prior to the
application of adhesive and
final assembly
3. Follow the manufacturers’
instructions for clamping/
drying times and do not
rush it
4. Clean off excess adhesive as
soon as possible. Failure to
do so may make it tricky later
on, may stain the timber,
or mar the application of a
final finish
W
oodcarving is an enjoyable
way of creating something
by hand, which is visually
pleasing and very personal. It
does not require big, expensive
tools like some crafts demand
– all that is needed are a good
selection of gouges, a couple of
knives, suitable timber, and an
enthusiastic nature.

8 WOODWORKER’S DIRECTORY
1. Keep your tools sharp. A blunt
tool will not cut as keenly and
will take more effort to use
2. Always gather as much
reference material as you can on
your chosen subject before you
start carving, e.g. studying
photographs and anatomy
books of a barn owl from many
angles will help you gain a
greater understanding of how
your carving should look. Don’t
rely on guess work as you are
more likely to end up with
something that is anatomically
impossible and just doesn’t look
right. Remember, you are
putting many hours of work
into your carving so you owe it
to yourself to get it right
3. Make a maquette (clay model)
of your chosen subject. You can
make your mistakes here and
put them right before you
commit yourself to the wood,
where errors are trickier to
correct
4. Join a club or a course. This will
improve your skills and will
allow you to gain confidence

Clamping
M
any things have changed in
the world of woodworking
down the centuries but the need to
clamp, cramp and apply pressure
remains constant. The apparatus
has evolved but the principle is
the same, however you do it. One
thing we can all agree on though
is that you can never have enough
clamps in the workshop.
Where there are clamps there
is glue and the two combined can
often result in panic. Therefore
your choice of clamps must be a
wise one and you should have a
range that will make gluing-up a
pleasure and not a chore.

TOP TIPS:
1. Quick-release clamps are particularly useful for securing items while
they’re being worked
2. Clamps with built-in soft jaws facilitate gluing up
3. Clamps that pull together as well as push apart give greater flexibility
4. Consider your options for clamping at the planning stage of your project

Finishes
TOP TIPS:
1. Make sure the surface is
properly sanded and prepared
2. Follow the manufacturers’
instructions when applying the

o matter how long we spend making something,
and, of course, preparing the surface ready to
accept a fi nal fi nish, the fi nish applied will either
make the piece look wonderful or awful.
Sadly, there is no fi nish that is suitable for every
situation and effect required, so a bit of time needs to
be spent at the planning stage to work out where the
piece is going to go and what type of fi nish is suitable.

Fixtures & fittings
TOP TIPS:
G
etting the right fi xtures
and fittings for any job
you tackle is crucial. It is very
hard to give specific advice as
the breadth of stuff available
is staggering, but following
a few basic principles when
buying will help you make
the right choices.
1. Pick your suppliers’ brains.
Whatever you are making, if you
develop a good relationship with
a supplier it will pay dividends,
as chances are they will be up on
the latest developments
2. Research. Whether it is buying
handles for kitchen cabinets,
coach bolts or screws, it is
essential you know the
manufacturers’ offerings and that
you investigate exactly what is
out there
3. Plan ahead. Know what you need
before you start a job, and buy it
all in advance. And when
it comes to screws, bolts and nails,
always buy more than you think
you will need. It is a nightmare to
be in the middle of gluing and
screwing a pocket screw joint,
only then to run out of screws
half-way through the project

machinery constitutes
a sizeable investment at any
level whether it be high-end
professional or occasional
amateur. Only rarely do machines
come to the market that cannot
fi nd a place in somebody’s
workshop based on budget or size
restriction.
The choice is vast and should
ultimately take into consideration
your future needs and aspirations
as well as your immediate
requirements. Combination
machines are designed to
integrate two or more processes
in one unit running off the same
motor, the compromise being that
only a single operation can be
performed at any one time before
making the necessary adjustments
to swap to the next function.

Power carving
TOP TIPS:
P
ower carving is not for everyone, but it is a fast and efficient way of
shaping, sanding and removing timber. Ranging from rotary power
units aimed at carvers of netsuke and fine detail, to heavy-duty units for a
variety of disciplines, there is a power-carving device to suit most needs.
But deciding on a unit isn’t the only consideration to make when going
up the power path; you should also bear in mind the type of hand piece
available with the unit and whether it has a flexible drive should it be
required for added versatility.
There is also a vast range of accessories available designed for a
multitude of jobs. Many of the accessories also have a universal fitting,
which enables them to be used across many makes of power carvers.

“In recent years there
has been a massive increase
in power tooling available
for woodcarvers”
– Woodcarving
1. Choose a unit that’s right for
you. The hand pieces will feel
different from one another in
the hand, so it is important to
opt for a design that is
comfortable for you to grip
2. Look closely at the accessories
on offer and make sure they do
what you want them to do. Some
units have a reciprocating
carving head, which will take
specially designed chisels
3. Look to see how the unit is
operated. Some are controllable
via a foot switch, and others by a
twist dial. Do your homework!
3. Don’t rely on doing everything
with power alone – there will be
times when you have to use
hand tools, so make sure your
skills are up to scratch to be able
to get to the parts not suitable
for a power carver

Power tools
B
uying power tools can be a bit of a minefield. It’s very easy to have
a rough idea of what you want, only to be seduced when you go to
the hardware store – or browse the Internet – by the bright colours and
information on power output, battery life, recharge time, air-cooled cells etc.
TOP TIPS:
1. Know the market. This may
seem a bit tedious to some of
you out there, but get hold of as
many catalogues and/or web
addresses as possible to find out
which tools are right for your
purchase
2. Know your budget. Work out
how much you can spend and
stick to it. Remember, to a
degree, you get what you pay
for. But buying older, and
therefore cheaper, technology in
a tried-and-tested format is
worth considering
3. Know what you want the tool
for. If you need a cordless drill/
driver, but won’t ever use a
hammer action for masonry,
why buy the more expensive
option? But…
4. … Know what you will need the
tool for in the future. If there is a
danger you may need a
hammer-action drill, then buy it
now, rather than fork out more
at a later date
5. Know what other woodworkers
think. On our website forums at
www.woodworkersinstitute.
com, many of our members post
about tool purchases and give
each other advice
6. Know your manufacturers.
Certain brands are trusted by
pros and good amateurs alike,

Routing
P
rogress in power tool
development has continued
apace over the years, but the most
versatile machine in the workshop
by far has to be the router. There
are plenty of models to choose
from and motor powers have
steadily increased to match the
more exotic cutters or demanding
operations. The most important
thing you can do, apart from basic
machining and machine handling,
is to bring these powerful
machines under control for the
best and most reliable results.
The use of guidebushes and jigs
is perhaps the key example. Most
jigs can simply be homemade from
ply or MDF, but in combination
with the correct size cutter and
guidebush they will allow all sorts
of operations from box making to
staircase stringing, or even antique
furniture restoration. All of this
would not be possible without
cutters, of which there are many
different types, for just about every
task you can think of.
TOP TIPS:
1. If you do a lot of routing consider
buying a second router, say one
large and one small for different-
sized operations, or two the same
to reduce cutter changes for speed
2. Check the collets regularly for wear;
if they look worn they should be
replaced. A ‘rising cutter,’ one that
slides out of the collet in use,
indicates a worn collet
3. Lubricate the plunge columns with
dry, water-free wax rather than wet
sticky oil or WD40
4. When using the straight fence pull
the router towards you; if you push
it the router will ‘wander’
5. On end-grain the wood can burn
easily when moulding the edge; you
can reduce or remove it by doing a
final pass at a slightly lower plunge
depth setting
6. As with all machining operations it
is sensible to do operations in
batches but make sure that you
carefully pencil mark the edge and
surface you wish to machine on all
components first

uying timber can be fraught with anxiety. For novices it can
be difficult just getting the jargon right so you don’t feel a
nitwit at the counter, but proof of a good supplier is a willingness
to interpret what you mean into the right sizes and cuts of boards.
A good supplier will be able to tell you where the timber is sourced
and will be honest about the usability of particular boards.
Remember that the supplier who stocks native timbers probably
won’t have much in the way of exotics, and vice versa.

TOP TIPS:
W
hatever power tool or machine you use it’s the business end or sharp
end that matters most. Good quality cutters or tooling are essential
if you are to obtain reliable, consistent results. Don’t simply opt for the
cheapest – buy the best you can afford.
Most machine cutting edges are now TCT (tungsten carbide) but it needs
to be of decent thickness and properly brazed in place so they cannot
break off. Micrograin TCT is normally used, which is denser and fi ner,
giving keener edges for clean cutting.
With saw blades there are design details to improve performance, often
having laser-cut noise reduction and expansion slots with anti-kickback
profi les behind the teeth.
1. Keep tooling clean for efficient
burn-free cutting
2. Store tooling separately to avoid
damage
3. Only buy what you are likely to
need more than once unless a
single job can justify an expensive
outlay
4. Avoid economy-grade cutters or
tooling; they will have a short
working life and can be dangerous
5. When cutting edges become dull
don’t keep on using them but take
them to a saw doctor to get them
re-sharpened

Turning
TOP TIPS:
W
oodturning is a fascinating
woodworking discipline.
As with all crafts, it does require
some equipment to get started and
here are some pointers on what
to look for when buying turning
items.
1. Lathes come in all shapes and
sizes and to suit all budgets.
When buying a lathe, consider
what you want to make and buy
a lathe that is solidly built, from
a reputable brand. You need the
lathe to be stable and sturdy, it
should ideally have a Morse
taper-fitting facility in the
headstock and tailstock – drive
and centre accessories use a
Morse taper as the primary
fitting option. The spindle should
be threaded to accommodate the
fitting of a chuck. There should
also either be a manual belt
change or manual/electronic
variable-speed with a wide range
of speed options to allow a
variety of work to be undertaken
2. When buying a chuck, choose
one that has the facility to take
out the old threaded insert or
backplate for the current lathe
and accept a new size if required
– a new lathe may have a
different-size spindle thread.
Check that the chuck has the
variety of different jaws as
options for potential future use
3. When choosing turning tools
there are five or six tools that will
get you going and enable you to
do the majority of work:
20mm (3⁄4in) spindle roughing
gouge; 6mm (1⁄4in) parting tool;
10mm (3⁄8in) spindle gouge;
25mm (1in) flat skew chisel;
10mm (3⁄8in) bowl gouge and a
heavy-duty French curve bowl
scraper (which is an optional
extra)
4. Lastly, before buying, check
websites, books, magazines and
local clubs for options and
opinions, and if at all possible,
try a product before you buy it

Wholesalers
W
holesalers are unfairly
dubbed the men in the
middle who take a cut of the
profits for the privilege of sitting
between manufacturer/supplier
and retailer, thus making the
end product even dearer for the
woodworker. That, however, is
grossly unfair, and below we are
happy to have this opportunity
to explain the benefits that this
misunderstood breed brings to
the market.
TOP TIPS:
1. Much cheaper prices because
of the ability to buy in bulk, thus
ensuring more reliable supply and
demand between manufacturer/
supplier and wholesaler
2. Detailed knowledge of regions
where particular products are
needed, thus facilitating healthy
stock turn for retailers
3. The clout of buying power gives
wholesalers the ear of
manufacturers/suppliers
4.Wholesalers are a one-stop shop
offering a comprehensive range of
products from various makers to
retailers, which can be delivered
quickly and efficiently
5. Wholesalers will tell retailers
how to ensure woodworkers get the
best out of their kit, and keep
retailers up to date with product
launches

years of turning experience. Only

Work lights & Workshop storage
are not appropriate for some
environments. They run at
extremely high temperatures
and as a consequence use a
disproportionate amount of energy
to create the heat necessary for
them to glow. A far more efficient
light source is available in the form
of LEDs (light emitting diodes).
These operate at much lower
temperatures and are available as
daylight corrected as well as bright
white. Buy quality LEDs and you
will never have to change the bulb.
TOP TIPS:
Work lights
T
he right choice of work light
can make even the most
demanding of tasks a pleasure. For
a general working environment
nothing beats natural daylight
but as this can be either too bright
and from the wrong direction or
not bright enough, some form of
alternative is required.
Halogen lights are widely
perceived as the brightest but

Workshop storage
H
owever big your workshop,
storage will always pose
a problem and it is worth
spending time when planning
the layout thinking about
how to maximise space by, for
example, making use of areas
beneath fi xed workbenches
for drawers – so long as these
don’t impede your ability to use

for hanging storage cabinets
and shelving. It’s true: a tidy
workshop is an efficient one.
