Blitzstart der Schweizer
gegen Deutschland
Das Schweizer Team mit Simon Gempeler, Enrico und
Marc Pfister sowie Skip Sven Michel gab sich gegen
Deutschland mit Skip Alexander Baumann keine Blösse
Team Profile: Finland
Finland's Skip Aku Kauste, together with teammates
Kasper Hakunti, Pauli Jäämies, Janne Pitko and
Alternate Kalle Kiiskinen from the Kisakallio CC have
become a threat to the worlds best teams in 2015 with
consecutive playoff spots at the WMCC 20015 in Halifax
and the ECC 2015 in Esbjerg. They hope to get another
chance to fight for a medal at the WMCC 2016 in Basel.
At the WMCC 2015 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the Finnish
team produced a big suprise by achieving a 7:4 record
in the Round Robin and qualifying for the playoffs. There
they lost the 3/4 playoff game to Sweden's Niklas Edin
and the Bronze medal game to Team Canada (Pat
Simmons).
und erledigte seine Startaufgabe souverän. Nach zwei
Steals im 1. und 2. End und einem Dreier im 4. End lagen
die Adelbodner bereits mit 5:1 im Vorsprung. Danach
Niklas Edin.
In December 2015, at the European Championships in
Esbjerg, Denmark they managed to repeat their
excellent performance and to capture another playoff
spot. But again, they came short of a medal by losing
the semifinal game against Switzerland and the Bronze
medal game against Norway.
The WMCC 2016 is Aku's fifth appearance at the world
championship. In 2002, he was the alternate for Markku
Uusipaavalniemi, moving up to second the next year
when the team lost the bronze-medal game to Norway’s
Pål Trulsen. His first experience as skip for Team Finland
in world competition came in 2013 in Victoria, Canada.

At the St. Jakobshalle we met:
Pål Trulsen, and he remembers well...
... when he and his Norwegian teammates Lars Vågberg, Flemming Davanger, Bent Ånund Ramsfjell and Torger
Nergård from the Stabekk Curling Club won the Olympic tournament 2002 in Salt Lake City - Ogden to be precise.
The score was 5:5 after nine ends and the opponents from Canada
skipped by Kevin Martin had the hammer in the last end. But somehow
the Norwegians managed to steal a point and win the Olympic gold
medal. "I don't exactly recall my last shot," says Pål, "but what I certainly
remember, is the party afterwards." His Curling career on international
level lasted precisely 25 years and 190 games, from his first Junior World
Championship in Kitchener, Ontario, in 1980 to his last appearance at the
Europeans in Garmisch 2005, when his team beat Peter Lindholm's
Swedish squad 9:4 in the final to win another gold medal. At the WMCC
2016 in Basel, Pål Trulsen is coaching the Norwegian team of Thomas
Ulsrud, but the father of two also enjoys "doing other things in life than
curling - enjoying my family for instance". But as you may guess, "family"
also means "curling". "My daughter Pia has won the first World Mixed
Curling Championship last year, " says Pål smilingly.

Team Profile: Canada
Kevin Koe is back in Canadian colours at the Men's Worlds for
the third time after 2010 and 2014. He is joined by his
Calgary-based Brier championship team of third Marc
Kennedy, second Brent Laing, lead Ben Hebert, alternate Scott
Pfeifer, team coach John Dunn and national coach Rick Lang.
All five Canadian players have world titles on their resume, but
with different teams.
Koe skipped Team Canada to gold in 2010 at Cortina
d’Ampezzo, Italy; Kennedy and Hebert won gold as the front
end for Kevin Martin in 2008 at Grand Forks, USA; Laing was a
member of Howard’s 2012 winning team in Basel, and also
won gold in 2007 at Edmonton with Howard; and Pfeifer won
three world titles throwing second rocks with Randy Ferbey.
So,naturally, the Canadian side is among the highest-rated
teams at the WMCC 2016. But will they be able to pass by
other curling greats such as reigning world champion Sweden
or the former world champions from Norway? Canada will be
looking to win gold for the 35th time in the 57-year history of
the World Men’s Championship. In addition, Canadian teams
have reached the podium 50 times in those 57 previous world
championships, collecting nine silver and seven bronze to go
along with the gold medals.

A golden dragon and
a magic bell
At the 50th anniversary celebration banquet Friday evening in
Basel, the World Curling Federation was presented with
distinguished and
most useful
presents. Among
others, a huge
golden dragon was
handed over to

traditionally
symbolize potent
and auspicious
powers, particularly control over water, rainfall, typhoons, and
floods. The dragon is also a symbol of power, strength, and good
luck for people who are worthy of it - no doubt a very suitable gift to
the leaders of world curling.
Patrik Loertscher, Vice-President of SwissCurling and Olympic
champion in Nagano1998 as well as World champion 1981 in
London, Ontario, had
!
brought along a huge
Swiss cowbell. He said
Say hello to Rocky!
that this bell might serve
the WCF to not only
expand its curling
activities but also its
acoustic presence all over
the world. Patrik promised
the WCF President that,
whenever she would ring
the bell, the President of
SwissCurling would
immediately listen to
her....
