BACK TO SCHOOL INFORMATION
A Message from the Superintendent
I would like to extend a warm welcome to all students, parents, staff and community members of our school district.
I hope that our students and families enjoyed their summer
and are ready for another great school year.
Each school year brings us new names and faces, which
become part of our existing school community. Each new
person adds to an already rich variety of people that work
together with the goal of learning and increasing achievement
for all our students. Each year also brings new opportunities
and challenges that continuously help us refine and improve
our services and programs.
This year’s school calendar highlights an outstanding group
of men and women who have been honored as Fridley High School Distinguished Alumni
and Circle of Excellence. The Distinguished Alumni program, now in its sixth year, honors
Fridley graduates who have exemplified themselves in their careers and service to their
communities. These men and women, whose careers and service have taken them through
out the world, credit the education they received at Fridley High School as the foundation
that helped them begin their journey to successful careers. For more than 50 years, as is
evidence by the alumni featured on this calendar, Fridley Public Schools has worked hard to
create that foundation and gateway to greater opportunities for its students, and is committed
to supporting all its students achieve at their highest levels for many more years to come.
Raising academic achievement for all our students continues to be our first priority. We are
always committed to using instructional and institutional best practices that will enable us
to prepare our students for the future.
Working with students, families and our community, we continue to improve strategies,
programs and techniques in our district that are supportive of greater academic achievement
in a safe, welcoming and supportive learning environment. We look forward to working
with our entire learning community during the 2016-2017 school year as we welcome back
all our students and families and look forward to another successful school year.

At Fridley Public Schools, community service and volunteering are an integral
part of our students’ learning experiences. Community service and volunteering help raise awareness about social issues and our students take action to
help support those in need in their local communities and in other countries.
Our alumni have traveled through out the world, volunteering their time and
services to support those in need, and helping provide communities with
much needed self-supporting services.

Student Data Privacy Policy
It is the policy of the Fridley Public School Board that the District comply with
the Federal Family Rights and Privacy Act and the Minnesota Government
Data Practices Act. A complete copy of the Student Data Privacy Policy is on
file in each school and the District Office.
Educational records are data recorded in written and electronic form on individual students including personal data, health data, educational progress and
performance data, attendance data, district testing program data, and special
education records. Most data included in educational records are considered
private and available only to the student’s parents or guardian if the student is
under 18 years old, and to school staff who need the data to provide services
to the student, unless permission is granted by the student or parent/guardian.
Directory information may be released to the public without permission of the
student, parent, or guardian. Directory information in District 14 includes the
following:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Student’s name, date and place of birth
Class designation (grade level)
Participation in officially recognized activities and sports
Weight and height of members of athletic teams
Dates of attendance
Degrees and awards received
Photograph
The most recent previous educational agency or institution attended
It is the practice of the district to release educational records to educational institutions to which a student intends to enroll or has enrolled without notifying
the student or parents/guardians prior to the transfer. Upon request, the district will provide the student or parents/guardians with a copy of the education
records which have been transferred and provide an opportunity for a hearing
to challenge the content of those records.
If a student or parent/guardian does not want some or all of this data to be
made public, they must notify their school principal within 30 days. If they
choose to deny release of all directory information, the student will be excluded
from such published lists as honor rolls, press releases regarding sports achievements, honors received, athletic contest programs, theater and music programs.
A request to deny release of information is maintained until requested in writing to be changed.
Medication at School
The school district acknowledges that some students may require prescription or non-prescription medication during the school day. We encourage all
medication to be given at home if possible, but if brought to school, medication will be kept in the Health Office in accordance with the school district
procedures, except as noted in a written agreement between the school district and the parent/guardian. The Health Office must receive a completed
and signed ‘Request to Administer Medication at School’ form from the
student’s parent/guardian for administration of all medications or a signed
clinic form completed by the doctor. In addition, all long-term prescriptions
(2 weeks or more) or a controlled prescribed medication requires a written
order from a licensed prescriber.
All medications must be sent to school in the original labeled container. You
may request your pharmacy to provide two separately labeled containers, one
for home and one for school. Written instructions must be provided for specific administration of the medication: including name of student, name of
medication, dosage, frequency, route, and duration of administration.
Administration of non-prescription medication must not exceed labeled directions. ‘Request To Administer Medication at School’ permission forms are
available in the school health office or on the District web site under Health
Services. These forms must be completed each school year prior to the administration of the medication.
New to the Fridley School District?
If you have recently moved into the Fridley School District, or if your
family has a new baby, please let us know. There are a variety of activities
and classes available for all residents of our District - from newborns to
senior citizens. To enable us to inform you of the opportunities available
to you and/or your children, and to provide you with other important
information about the district, we need to include each new resident on
our district census. Please call Lori O’Dowd at 763-502-5081 to make additions to our district census.
Early Childhood Screening
Will your child be attending preschool this year? Will your child be entering
kindergarten in the fall 2016. If you answer yes to these questions Early Childhood screening is for your child.
What is Early Childhood screening?
Screening is an early look at how your child is growing and developing. Between the ages of 3½ and 4, screening can detect possible health or learning
concerns, so that children can get help before they start school. Minnesota
requires every child to participate in an Early Childhood Screening prior to
entry into kindergarten in a public school.
Screening dates:
August 24-25
October 14
December 2
March 29-31
May 31
To schedule a screening appointment for your child, please call 763-502-5111
or email [email protected]. If you email, please use “Screening” as
the subject. We will call or email you with an appointment time. Then you will
receive an appointment time reminder by mail along with forms to complete
and bring to your appointment.
Inclement Weather Policy
In cases of extreme weather, the Superintendent is authorized by the Fridley School
Board to close schools or to delay the starting time. When such conditions exist,
the school system notifies local news channels which in turn announces the closings.
The decision to close or delay schools’ starting time is made by 6:00 AM. Unless you hear on television news channels, or receive a direct message from the
district that schools are closed, they will be open. Information about school
closings or delayed starting time will also be posted on our district website at:
www.fridley.k12.mn.us.
In case of inclement weather, parents may decide not to let their children come to
school. They may also decide to pick them up from school any time during the day.
Special Services Supports Students with Special Needs
Fridley Public Schools provides special education and support services for
students with disabilities from preschool to high school. Students with special
needs may be provided services in area preschools, in the regular classroom,
through individualized instruction in a resource room, in special classes, in
special day schools, or in residential schools, homes or hospitals. General
information may be obtained by calling the Special Services office at 763-5025025.
A team of special and regular education personnel works with parents to determine the type of education which best meets the learner’s individual needs.
An Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is developed cooperatively between
parents and school staff.
Special services provided by the school district include:
• Early Childhood Special Education programs
• Adapted Physical Education
• Occupational Therapy
• Psychological Services
• School Health Services
• Speech/Language Therapy
• Title I Services
• Work Experience Programs
• Transition Program for young adults with special needs.
Services are also provided for students with:
• Autism
• Emotional/behavioral disorders
• Intellectual impairments
• Orthopedic impairments
• Vision or hearing impairments
• Learning disabilities
• Limited English proficiency
State of Minnesota and Federal funds are used to help support special education programs. Parents and community members may review applications,
reports and evaluations of District activities supported by these funds. If you
suspect that your child (age birth through twenty one) may be in need of special services, please contact the Special Services office at 763-502-5025.
Nutritional Services Program
Fridley school cafeterias continue to meet federal nutrition standards for
school meals, ensuring that meals are healthy and well-balanced and provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school. Now is a
great time to encourage your kids to choose school breakfast and lunch!
School meals offer students fruits and vegetables; proteins and grains,
low fat milk and they must meet guidelines on saturated fat, trans fat and
portion size.
ALL students are eligible to participate in the National School Breakfast
Program at no charge again this school year. Our no fee for breakfast
can only survive if lots of students participate. Please encourage your
students to eat breakfast at school every day so we can continue providing
breakfast at no charge to ALL students.
Our schools also participate in the National School Lunch Program.

Department of Agriculture. If a child has been determined by a physician to have a disability which prevents the child from eating the regular
meal, call us to find out if we can make modifications or substitutions
prescribed by the physician at no additional charge.
Annual Notification
2016-2017 Annual Report on Curriculum and
Instruction and Student Achievement
Each district in Minnesota is required to report to its community on a yearly
basis regarding curriculum development and improvement plans and progress.
The report contents are specified by the Minnesota Department of Education.
This report will be available in October 2016 on our website (www.fridley.k12.
mn.us). We encourage you to review this information. If you would prefer to
have a copy of this report mailed to you, please contact the office of the Director of Educational Services at 763-502-5005. Also, if you have any comments or
questions about the report, please contact the Department of Educational Services at 763-502-5005.
Retention and Destruction of Records of Students
with Special Needs
Fridley Public Schools Special Education Department retains educational
records for students with disabilities for seven years after the students' graduation date. Parents and eligible students will be notified about this practice at
the time the student:
1. Is dismissed from special education service,
2. Graduates from school, or
3. Ages out of school.
The District will post on its website the school year records that are to be destroyed. If a student wants their last special education evaluation and IEP, they
can contact the Special Education Department at 763-502-5025 for pickup.
Student must show proper identification. If someone else will be picking up
their special education record a Release of Information must be signed by the
student and received by the District. Proper identification must be provided.
For more information please contact the Special Education Department
at 763-502-5025.
