Krol 2 A Message from the Chair Dear Friends, George Santayana, an American philosopher and poet, said, “We must welcome the future, remembering that soon it will be the past; and we must respect the past, remembering that it was once all that was humanly possible.” I think that beautifully sums up our purpose at Naper Settlement. Over the past few years, we have literally laid the foundation for a bright future for our museum. In 2011, we installed new environmentally sustainable roadways and landscaping. In 2012, we received reaccreditation from the American Alliance of Museums, an honor that only a small percentage of museums achieve nationally. In 2013, we have continued our forward momentum to create a gathering place for the community through our special events and programs. This annual report shares the highlights and accomplishments of the past year with you, our supporters of Naper Settlement and the Naperville Heritage Society. You’ll also see the report reflects our vision for a vibrant future — that of preserving, educating, engaging and connecting. Thank you to all who have embraced and supported that vision. Yours in preservation, Sally Pentecost, Chair Naperville Heritage Society Board of Directors The Mission of Naper Settlement 2013 Highlights Naper Settlement was named one of the Top 25 largest tourist attractions in the Chicago area by Crain’s Chicago Business. The museum achieved that distinction by attracting more than 118,000 visitors, representing a 12.44% increase over FY12. More Naperville residents experienced Naper Settlement, a 14.18% increase, than the previous year. Free general admission for Naperville residents is being extended until 2018. In conjunction with the City of Naperville, a 9½-foot-tall, 2,000-pound bronze statue of Naperville’s founder, Joseph Naper, was unveiled and dedicated in August 2013 at the Naper Homestead, located on the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Mill Street in Naperville, the place where the Napers first lived when they arrived in 1831. The project was supported by grants from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the City of Naperville’s Special Events and Cultural Amenities Fund. Naperville resident and nationally-acclaimed, Pulitzer Prize-winning artist Dick Locher created the image of a young Naper brought to life by sculptor Jeff Adams of inBronze Foundry. Michael S. Krol, who served as the chair of the Naperville Heritage Society board of directors, was appointed interim president and CEO, when Peggy Frank retired after a 33-year career at the museum. A nationwide search was underway to find the next president and CEO. Naper Settlement creates community by connecting visitors to Naperville’s history through engaging, unique experiences. The Mission of the Naperville Heritage Society With a commitment to the community and a focus on the future, the mission of the Naperville Heritage Society is to collect, document, preserve and support the history of Naperville, Illinois, past and present. The Naperville Heritage Society values stewardship, preservation, education, and community and public trust. 3 2013 Highlights In collaboration with Sikich Marketing, Naper Settlement rebranded with an updated, colorful logo and tagline, “Where history comes to play!” The rebranding is dedicated to refreshing the look and feel of Naper Settlement’s online and printed materials to better reflect the visitor experiences offered. The inaugural 2013 Summer Internship Program was a competitive, college-level program. The goal was to provide hands-on experiences to college students interested in museum work, in addition to providing much-needed support with museum projects, operations and events. Seven interns committed to working 20 hours per week for 10 weeks. y r o t s i H e r e h W 4 2013 Highlights Laura Russman, an undergraduate at Aurora University, was chosen as the first recipient of the endowed John K. and Judith H. Powell Museum Studies Internship. This annual, competitive internship offers a 16-week practical museum experience to college junior, seniors and recent graduates or master’s degree candidates interested in pursuing a career in the museum field. The internship provided an opportunity to gain general knowledge and a broad understanding of how the curatorial and education departments function within the context of a major museum. Emily Deahr, a teen volunteer at Naper Settlement, was the recipient of the 2013 Copenhagen Schoolhouse Scholarship, established by Naperville residents Eve and Tom Hushek. The annual $500 award is to be used for college expenses during the freshman year of college directly after graduating from high school. The scholarship is available to high school seniors who have volunteered at Naper Settlement for at least two years, during their sophomore and junior years, specifically as a volunteer costumed building interpreter. She also received the Naperville Youth Service Award from KidsMatter and the Naperville City Council for her volunteerism at Naper Settlement. “I have always loved visiting history museums. I loved the entire experience and I thought it would be a great opportunity to be part of the magic.” – Laura Russman “We must welcome the future, remembering that soon it will be the past; and we must respect the past, remembering that it was once all that was humanly possible.” – George Santayana 5 Your generosity makes a difference! The exhibits at Naper Settlement are the result of the community’s support through generous donations from individuals, businesses, corporations and foundations. We preserve the past for future generations thanks to the generosity of our donors. 6 Foundations and Grants The Rita (Fredenhagen) and John Harvard Early Learning Playscape. John and the late Rita Harvard, longtime supporters of the Naperville Heritage Society and Naper Settlement, gave a substantial lead gift that will be used to build a new early childhood education area, which will be named “The Rita (Fredenhagen) and John Harvard Early Learning Playscape.” The playscape is a 10,000-square-foot interactive area that is targeted to children ages 2 to 7 at Naper Settlement. It will feature a splash pad, the only one of its kind in Naperville, a trading post and many other hands-on activities. It will be available to children with a broad spectrum of capabilities and will be accessible to children with special needs. The Institute of Museum and Library Services Grant A Conservation Project Support Grant from the IMLS was awarded to hire an objects conservator and preservation architect to conduct a conservation reassessment of the museum’s collection and historic buildings. The resulting reports addressed at-risk environments, maintenance and restoration priorities, and recommendations for improving the long-term preservation of the museum’s collections and historic structures. In addition, the museum’s long-range preservation plan was updated. A halfday conservation education workshop also was held for area museums and graduate students. DuPage Community Foundation Naper Settlement received a $5,000 grant from the DuPage Community Foundation, which allowed students from three local elementary schools with a high percentage of families in need to attend the fourth-grade Living History program. Tellabs Foundation grant to support programs for middle school students Naper Settlement received a $15,000 grant from the Tellabs Foundation to support the “Voices of the Past: The Underground Railroad in Northern Illinois” program. The grant will fund 10 new junior high schools/middle schools with a high number of low-income students to participate in the program. Naper Settlement receives a grant from Ecolab Foundation The Ecolab Foundation’s Community Relations Council (Naperville) approved a grant of $5,000 to the Naperville Heritage Society to underwrite Naper Settlement’s education programs. To fulfill their principle to enhance the well-being of people and communities, Ecolab’s support will allow Naper Settlement to provide programs for students and schools in need. “Over the past thirty years, dedicated Naper Settlement staff improved the care for the collection and buildings by successfully receiving funding from local, state, and federal agencies, and the Naperville Heritage Society for ten separate assessments and conservationrelated projects. The largest project was the 2010 Fort Hill collection facility, a $2.65 million, 22,500-square-foot, purpose-built collection care facility.” – Shelley Paine Conservation, LLC 7 New Events and Programs Cell phone audio tour and scavenger hunts Giddy Up! Pullman Bus Tour and Lecture Two interactive scavenger hunts, a Family Adventure and a History Challenge, have been added to Naper Settlement’s free cell phone audio tour. The audio tour hosted by OnCell provides additional information on the museum’s buildings and nearby historic sites. During the 90-minute, interactive early childhood program, children ages 4-7 saddled up their hobby horses and galloped to five stops throughout the museum grounds, while guided by a museum educator. Along the way, they learned about the importance of horses to the pioneers who settled the prairie in the 1800s. The Giddy-Up! program was created to provide age-appropriate, hands-on activities for Naper Settlement’s youngest visitors. In honor of the Historic Pullman Annual House Tours’ 40th anniversary, Naper Settlement developed a Pullman series that included a bus tour to the Pullman neighborhood and a companion lecture given by Dr. Ann Durkin Keating, history professor at North Central College and noted author, speaker and historian. Dr. Keating talked about George Pullman’s life and the nation’s continued fascination with his legacy. Wednesday Walking Club The Walking Club is a free program in which participants walk the museum grounds or the nearby Riverwalk from 8 to 9 a.m. every Wednesday morning from April through October. Walkers logged their hours, received incentive prizes and enjoyed a light snack. In 2013, 62 individual walkers participated, logging a total of 16,823 minutes walking throughout the grounds and along the Riverwalk. Naper Settlement began participating as a result of a communitywide health initiative and it aligned with the museum’s efforts to have the community perceive Naper Settlement as a gathering place where they could enjoy the grounds and visit for numerous reasons throughout the year. The Columbian Exposition: Through the Eyes of a Visitor Three new programs about the Columbian Exposition were developed by retired Naper Settlement Museum Educator Barb Rimmer. The three-part series was paired with a bus tour to the Field Museum for the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 exhibit developed in honor of the 120th anniversary of the fair that was held in Chicago. The programs also can be offered off-site for groups such as service clubs and senior living communities. Tea & Talk Tuesdays Fans of the hit television drama Downton Abbey attended programs that explored the passion, nobility, treachery and looming change awaiting the cast of characters from the Edwardian era through the 1920s. “The Wednesday Walking Club was a wonderful opportunity for people who had never been to Naper Settlement to experience the museum during a free program that promoted a healthy lifestyle. During our first year in 2013, there were 62 individuals who participated, logging a total of 16,823 minutes while they walked throughout our grounds and the nearby Naperville Riverwalk.” – Cindy Lackore, Lead Museum Educator 8 Community Partnerships Downtown Naperville Alliance and Naperville North High School Naper Settlement sponsored one of 25 gingerbread men sculptures that were part of the Downtown Naperville Alliance’s holiday lights celebration. The sculpture was painted to look like a Cock Robin ice cream parlor employee. The concept for the sculpture was developed by Naperville North High School senior Ethan Cherry, who was president of the high school’s National Art Honor Society. The sculpture was completed by members of the Honor Society under his direction. Naperville Community Bank & Trust Naper Settlement has partnered with Naperville Community Bank & Trust to present exhibits in special cases at the bank, located on the corner of Washington Street and Benton Avenue. The Cup of Cheer exhibit, installed by Tiffany Tindell, a volunteer with the Curatorial Department and a student at North Central College, started off 2013 and was developed to complement the Naperville Garden Club’s annual Cup of Cheer housewalk fundraiser. Other exhibits at the bank during the year included food history with historic recipes and cooking implements and a display of artifacts found during the Naper Homestead archaeological digs in 2006 and 2007. Forest Preserve District of DuPage County Chris Gingrich, education outreach specialist for the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, gave a special presentation titled, “Rediscovering Camp McDowell,” about the secret life of the forest preserve that included being a training ground during World War II for top secret operations. 9 2013 Museum Collection Additions Alongside its educational goals, Naper Settlement maintains its ongoing commitment to the high-quality collection, preservation and display of historical objects and buildings.
