ENCOUNTERING A NEW CREATURE
The oceans are a fascinating realm. Although
we know a great deal about them, every

them a desirable subject. The problem is that they swim, they
never sit still, and this makes them a challenge. The key is to pick
the right ones. In every school, there will be an individual that
is a little more curious. Every now and then, you’ll encounter a

are the ones I photograph, these are the ones that make for the
best images.
DANGEROUS SITUATIONS
I have been underwater in an earthquake (it was very noisy)
and swum in the bubbles of an active volcano (very beautiful),
but both sound much worse than they were. There are plenty
of creatures underwater that have good defenses — spikes,
spines, stings and poisons. But very, very few who are openly
aggressive. I don’t have any friends who have ever been
seriously hurt by marine life. Accidents around boats are much
more common.
One of the most dangerous underwater encounters I had
was with a male dolphin who was just too friendly. From time
to time young male dolphins get excluded from their pods,
and this can lead to strange behavior. This male was trying to
mate with me, which was funny — but also scary because he
was so powerful he was pushing me through the water, and I
could have easily ended up too deep, or had my facemask or air
supply dislodged. Luckily, it all ended well.
FAVOURITE SHOTS FROM THE BOOK
One is a pair of stingrays that is on the cover and also opens
chapter three. They are photographed with the camera half in
and half out of the water, creating a split level image. It is not an
easy picture to take and then even more challenging to get the
marine life to line up. I also had to get up pretty early to be out
in the middle of the sea in time for sunrise. But the rewards were
VNQSGHS(G@CSNONRHSHNMLXƦ@RGDRCNVMADMD@SGSGDRTQE@BD
to illuminate this pair of stingrays against the coming dawn.
Another is the portrait of a manatee in a shallow spring.
Manatees are also called seacows; they are slow moving marine
mammals who feed entirely on vegetation. In winter, manatees
swim in from the sea to stay warm in freshwater springs in
Florida. I chose this low viewpoint, framing the manatee
vertically to include the trees in my composition, to show
the marine mammal in a thoroughly terrestrial environment. I
carefully controlled the quantity and quality of light from my

Yet another favourite is a photo from

Eurasian tectonic plate in Iceland. The crack is

freezing but crystal clear and pure enough to
drink. It is very dark in the Silfra canyon, so I
waited until the middle of the day to take this
shot, when the low sun is perfectly aligned to
illuminate both sides of the canyon. This photo
opens chapter six.

in Konkani, these plays known as Tiatr are a quite popular mode of
entertainment on the weekends with the locals, apart from travellers from
the Middle East and the Portuguese who return from London on their
annual vacations. Like most musicals, these plays are staged in a series of
acts called pordhe and involve live choirs singing songs with lots of dance
interspersing the drama. The themes are usually contemporary, with the
scripts depicting social and political themes dripping with satire.

T
he talk of the town in London is 8 Mount Street, an elegantly
designed bar and brassiere serving modern European cuisine.
Housed in a beautiful period building on one of Mayfair’s
most exclusive shopping streets, the restaurant’s ambience
bespeaks tasteful luxury, with brass-panelled walls, leather banquettes,
and carved wooden chairs.
The interiors also feature a long Italian marble bar dining counter
that runs the length of the room. This serves as an alternative to the more
formal table arrangements in the main restaurant. The eight-cover tiled
