CHRIST THE KING MINI-FARMERS MARKET
At the recent St. Vincent DePaul meeting, we decided to
offer again like last summer a Mini-Farmers’ Market in
the parish, after Masses in the vestibule. The way it will
work is, parishioners are asked to bring their excess garden produce to place on a common table. Parishioners at
large will then make a free will offering for the fresh produce to take home. SVdP will coordinate this, and all
proceeds will go the Holy Family Food Pantry. This is a
win-win-win exchange. Your excess produce is not
wasted. Our senior members and others, who cannot get
to the farmers market in town and may not be able to afford retail prices, get fresh garden produce. Holy Family
Food Pantry can feed the poor through our efforts. So as
you are planning your garden, plant a row for the hungry,
and praise the Lord for his blessings!

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
CHRIST THE KING PARISH—Rev. Joseph Ring, Pastor
1930 Barberry Dr. - Springfield, IL

As I write this the workers have begun the work to install the new
80 ton chiller (air conditioner) for the church. Recall the old one
died last October. It was original equipment; not bad giving us 41
years of service. I will write a check for $70,000 to keep me and all
of us cool at Mass, hopefully for another 4 decades. Our new
boiler, installed last fall, served us well this long, cold winter; recall
that was $75,000. These big expenses are unavoidable, yet a good
investment in that they are much more energy efficient. Realizing
how our economy works, our dollars pay for the work of human
hands, locally for our contractor, the factory workers who made the
units, the drivers who deliver, steel makers, etc. Are we an economic engine? Not exactly, but we are contributing to jobs, food
on the table for families, benefits for others, all for good. From our
blessings, being able to afford a new air conditioner and boiler,
blessings abound for others. We can feel good, not just cool and
warm, about this expenditure. Thanks to all who have contributed
to the boiler/AC fund.
Since the first Sunday and Monday of March, two groups of parishioners have been meeting to read and pray over the book, Forming
Intentional Disciples: The Path to Knowing and Following Jesus,
by Sherry Weddell. I have co-lead the group with a small team of
parishioners, and it has been an amazing process, filled with the
Holy Spirit. The silence has been broken and our comfort level
increased to speak about our individual relationship with Jesus.
The groups have been very affirming to me. One of the fruits of
this is the new beginning of Mass when we turn and greet our
neighbor. We desire to be a warm, friendly and welcoming parish.
There is much energy from the groups to engage the parish to be
intentional disciples, and we are meeting all together in June to consider our next steps. One for sure is to have another group of parishioners read and pray over Sherry’s book later this summer.
What from I read on forums and hear otherwise, this book, this
movement to discipleship in our church is sweeping the country. I
know we have some work to do.
I will be away this week (please note the Mass schedule) to be with
a group of priests of the Archdiocese of Seattle, presenting Good
Leaders, Good Shepherds. This particular module is on leadership
in the one to one context. What I have learned and continue to
learn from GLGS helps my priesthood and the life of the parish.
I hope you are using your Little White Book for your daily prayer.
On Friday read about cartoonist Bill Keane and “The Family Circus.” This week’s scriptural reflections are based on the gospel
reading for the feast of SS. Peter and Paul. Please keep sending in
the new census forms. It’s on our website if you lost yours. On the
back cover, I am asking for the names of all our graduating seniors
because our current census does not give me names and dates of
births for most of the children in the parish. Thanks!

FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
Because of all of the snow days we used this year, we will be in school
for quite a few days after graduation. It will continue to be school as
usual as there is still material that teachers need to cover. I believe
that the best way to begin the next school year, 2014-2015, is to end
this school year on a positive note. A report card that reflects a child’s
hard work is that positive note. We all know that as it gets closer to
the end of a school year, it is hard to keep students motivated. We will
do all we can here to help them and we know that you will do what you
always do, remind your children that school is important. We will keep
teaching through Friday, May 30. June 2 will be the clean-up day and
June 3 is Fun Day. On June 3, we will plan to meet in church for a
short prayer service. After that, children will receive report cards from
their teachers and be dismissed with our blessings for a safe summer.
God’s Blessings, Jeanine Kolb

MAY 18TH, 2014
PRO-LIFE CORNER:
"Human life must be respected and protected absolutely
from the moment of conception. From the first moment of
his existence, a human being must be recognized as
having the rights of a person -- among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life. "Before I formed
you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I
consecrated you” (Jer 1:5; cf Job 10:8-12; Ps 22:10-11).
“My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being
made in secret, intricately wrought in the depths of the
earth” (Ps. 139:15). Since the first century the Church
has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion.
This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable."
-- Catechism of the Catholic Church, n. 2270-2271
Jesus said “I am the Way and
the Truth and the Life.” Learn

FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
MAY 18TH, 2014
MASS AND RECEPTION
IN HONOR OF
MRS. KOLB’S RETIREMENT
In recognition of Mrs. Kolb and her service to Christ the King School, a mass will be held on Sunday,
June 1, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in her honor. Following mass an open house reception will be held in the
Parish Center from approximately 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Plans are
underway to make this a special day for Mrs. Kolb.
We hope you will join us in thanking Mrs. Kolb for her years of service and blessing her as she starts a
new chapter in her life. If wanting to assist on the day of the event, please e-mail Katherine Franklin at
[email protected].
Additionally, in recognition of Mrs. Kolb’s retirement the CTK School Library will be dedicated in her
honor, recognizing her devotion to learning. In conjunction with the dedication, a collection is being
taken to establish a fund to support the CTK School Library. This fund will be used in the future to provide any needed resources for the CTK School Library. Anyone wanting to donate to this fund can put it
in an envelope marked “Library Fund” and place it in the collection basket. Checks should be made payable to CTK School. All money raised will go for use by the Library. We thank you in advance for your
support.
