BENEFACTOR NEWS
HELLO & WELCOME ...
To the new look of Bravo – Benefactor News. We’re thrilled to
present a different feel to this newsletter, in line with a new
Development team and a revitalized approach to fundraising at
The Arts Centre. Jaqi and I are keeping very busy with a range
of exciting new initiatives, all focused on building awareness
of the Benefactor Program and other forms of giving at the
Centre. Highlights include updates to the Centre website,
new on-line donation capabilities, our Jesus Christ Superstar
donation campaign and much, much more.
We hope you enjoy this newsletter, designed to give you news
on recent events, a preview of things to come, social photos
and other helpful hints – we’ve even added the café menu for
your convenience. So, make yourself a cuppa, sit back and
enjoy the read. Please, at any time, feel free to contact myself
or Jaqi directly. We look forward to catching up with you soon.

INTRODUCING
MARK & ELIZABETH NIALL
BARRY & KAREN PLANT
WELCOME
The start to 2014 began in a similar
fashion to how we ended the previous
year, with a hive of activity. January saw
the introduction of the Arts Theatre being
used as a new digital cinema space and
the result was record attendances and
our busiest January on record.
We also welcomed our newest member
to the team Megan Connors in the
role of Development Manager. Megan
has hit the ground running by hosting
numerous events and catching up with
many Benefactors so be sure to keep an
eye out for her.
The Cultural Precinct exhibition left
the gallery in December and began
a road trip around the city’s libraries
while the architects turned their focus
to completing the detailed designs
for stage one of the project which
will see the development of the new
outdoor amphitheatre space and a new
transitional gallery to temporarily house
the city’s growing art collection while we
await further progress on the Art Tower.
The gallery team have been kept busy
with the Josephine Ulrick and Win
Schubert Photography Award while
the Performing Arts team are madly
rehearsing the cast of Jesus Christ
Super Star set to hit the stage in
June. Over the coming 6 months our
attention will turn to realising the first
stage of the Cultural Precinct and I
look forward to keeping you updated.

CONTACT US
Long-term patrons of The Arts
Centre, Mark and Elizabeth rejoined
our family in February as Bronze
Benefactors.
Barry & Karen Plant, of the
Barry Plant Real Estate Group in
Melbourne, joined us in March as
Gold Benefactors.
Mark says: “when we moved to the
Coast fifteen years ago, the view of
capital city people was that there was
no artistic merit or interests on the
Coast. To that end we got a wonderful
surprise to find The Arts Centre and
adopted it. We joined the Friends and
a lot of our life is now centred around
the Centre and the friends we have
made through it”.
“Karen and I chose to become
involved in supporting the Arts Centre
to help enrich the quality of shows
and performances that the Art Centre
pride themselves in bringing to the
local community. Without community
support and interest, these wonderful
occasions would fail to materialise”.
PARTNERS & DONORS WALL
IS GETTING A REFRESH
Looking
after
high
net-worth
individuals, NAB Private Wealth
has a very strong connection with
philanthropy and the arts. We were
thrilled to have them come on board
in March as Gold Benefactors.
Keep an eye on the Partners & Donors
wall in the Gallery Foyer, which will
soon be refreshed to acknowledge all
current supporters of the Centre. We
will be doing this on a regular basis, as
an important donor recognition tool.
DONATIONS
One of the most exciting fundraising initiatives we have recently unveiled
is the ability for the Centre to take donations during ticket purchasing
transactions. Now, during the booking of a ticket, patrons will be encouraged
to make a donation towards the Centre. There has been much work behind
the scenes in order to make this possible so we are simply thrilled with the
results. Please, show your continued support for us and next time you are
purchasing tickets, consider adding a couple of extra dollars if you have
them spare!

MCILWAINS ARTS BUS FUND
You may recall that Diamond Benefactors, Jock and Beverly
McIlwain recently donated $10,000 towards a bus fund to
assist schools in visiting the Centre for performances. This
fund has been an enormous support to twelve schools so far.
Pictured below are photographs of a beautiful handmade
card from Silkwood School, in thanks for the McIlwain’s
support of their travel to Tashi.
We are incredibly proud to announce that Jock and Beverly
have just pledged their support for a further 12 months.
This includes both their Diamond Benefactor donation, plus
a further $10,000 towards the Bus Fund. We say a very big
thank you once again for the McIlwain’s generous support of
our youth and education activities.
PRECINCT DESIGN GOES ‘ON THE ROAD’
The Cultural Precinct Touring Exhibition 2014 continues its
journey to city venues, providing residents across the city
with the opportunity to see the concept for a new heart for
art and culture at Evandale.
Hosted at Nerang Branch Library until 31 May, with a
condensed display at Coolangatta Branch Library until
9 June, the exhibition features the international design
competition winning design by ARM Architecture + Topotek1.
The full exhibition will move to Council’s Upper Coomera
Centre between 2 and 29 June.
Meanwhile, Council continues to work with ARM to fine tune
the site master plan and determine staging. In addition,
Council is investigating a range of funding options to
support a potential first stage of the precinct’s development
and a decision is expected during Council’s current budget
deliberations. The Council budget will be handed down on
20 June.

IT’S HAPPENING! Our brand new version of the classic rock opera is in production. With a hugely talented cast
and industry heavyweights at the helm, Performing Arts Manager Brad Rush says ‘This production is inspired by
a modern LA obsession with celebrity, so it’s very relevant for today’s audience. It’s a provoking interpretation by
Supervising Director Kris Stewart, and this cast will really bring his vision to life.’
THE CAST INCLUDES –
JESUS – Stevie Mac
Stevie Mac has most recently been performing solo cabaret in Melbourne, working with his
brother on pop band project Parislane and also drumming in the band, the thrill. He has
recorded his own CDs and was recently a featured artist in The Greenroom Project. Stevie
played Jesus in an amateur production of Jesus Christ Superstar in 2000 when he was just 17.
I joined the cast as I’m passionate about the musical ever since falling in love with it in 2000.
I have dreamed of performing the musical again since then, and I’m looking forward to work
with true professionals such as Kris Stewart.’
JUDAS – Dash Kruck
Dash Kruck is a familiar face in the theatre scene and has worked for most of the major
companies in Queensland including QTC, LaBoite, Harvest Rain, QPAC and Oscar, among
others. He will go straight into this production of Jesus Christ Superstar after completing a
season of A Tribute of Sorts at QTC, a show that he also co-created. Says Dash ‘This creative
team is pretty much the best in the biz. Chances to work with this calibre of people don’t come
along every day, so when they do, you jump on them! I’m so excited to get a chance to tackle
this intense role. I’ve always wanted to play Judas. It is a major vocal workout each night but
I’m so thrilled to have the challenge of bringing this character to life.’
MARY – Lizzie Moore
Most recently, Lizzie’s solo cabaret On a Night Like This was seen in London at BL-NK, and will
be featured in the 2014 Adelaide Cabaret Festival and Queensland Cabaret Festival. Lizzie says
‘I’ve joined JCS to have the opportunity to appear on stage with such an amazingly talented
cast, and work with the fantastic creative team and the team at The Arts Centre Gold Coast
(as I’ve heard such great things from friends and colleagues who have worked there before).’
The lead roles will be supported by a highly-talented dance ensemble and chorus.
Underpinning this production is the classic rock score which will be magnificently directed by David Piper, one of the very
best musical directors in the country. A superb local band of some of the best musicians on the Coast will provide the perfect
complement to one of the most popular musicals of all time.
IF YOU HAVEN’T BOOKED YOUR TICKETS ALREADY, GET IN NOW!
DONATIONS FOR JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR
Did you know, we are gratefully receiving donations toward our production of Jesus Christ Superstar? All support received not
only contributes to the delivery of this exciting in-house production, but is also tax deductible.
Supporters to date include: Mr & Mrs Barry & Maureen Stevenson, Mr Don Robertson, the McLaren Family, Mr & Mrs Tony &
Muriel Hancock, Mr & Mrs Grahame and Helen Orchard, Gold Coast Eisteddfod and The Australian Decorative and Fine Arts

SPECIAL EVENTS
Exclusive Film Screening:
12 Years A Slave
Friday 7 February 2014
We enjoyed a record attendance at
our private screening of 12 Years a
Slave in February. This event was
especially for the Benefactor family
and guests enjoyed refreshments in
the Panorama Suite before heading
into the film. Although the movie
was extremely hard-hitting, it was
an enjoyable night and a great way
to start the year. Megan particularly
embraced the opportunity to meet so
many of the Benefactor family and
share a little about herself. For those
who missed out, don’t worry, we have
another event coming up very soon!
Josephine Ulrick & Win Schubert Photography Award
Saturday 29 March 2014
Our Gold Coast City Gallery put on a beautiful event for the Josephine Ulrick
and Win Schubert Photography Award. The winning entry of this prestigious
contemporary photography art prize is pictured above: SHAUN GLADWELL’S
The Flying Dutchman in Blue (Coogee 2) is a photograph exploring his interest
in the romantic tradition and notions of the sublime.
“The power of the Australian surf is the stage for this figure that strikes a
balanced and level pose seconds before being engulfed by the overpowering
force of the wave. The Vitruvian symmetry and order of the body is to be
challenged by the erratic forces of the Tasman Sea”. JUDGE: Natasha Bullock

fear, Ruby Moon explores

SALTWATER COUNTRY
Sat 19 Jul – Sun 31 Aug, Gallery 1
Saltwater Country is a major exhibition project that presents
new work by 16 contemporary Queensland Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander artists, firstly on the Gold Coast and then
touring internationally and nationally. This exhibition seeks
to capture their strong cultural connectedness to the sea and
water’s edge. This exhibition also includes a range of public
programs and a special foyer display of images from an artist
camp on South Stradbroke Island.

Saltwater Country was developed in partnership between Museum & Gallery Services Queensland and Gold Coast City Gallery, curated by Michael Aird and Virginia Rigney, supported by the
Visual Arts and Craft Strategy, an initiative of the Australian, State and Territory governments and has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts,
its arts funding and advisory body. This project has received financial assistance from the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland’s Backing Indigenous Arts program. Gold Coast

CHRIS LANGLOIS: POINTS IN TIME
Sat 2 Aug – Sun 14 Sep, Gallery 2
Chris Langlois has attained the reputation as one of Australia’s
leading contemporary landscape artists. Characterised by subtle
shifts of light and space, the paintings explore the land and sea,
and often envelop the viewer with their large scale and surface
quality. While his paintings are often inspired by places, they
transcend time and space to become much more about personal
experience. Chris Langlois won the Stan and Maureen Duke Gold
Coast Art Prize in 2011 with his work Darkwood no.19.

YOUTH ARTS AND EDUCATION
ADFAS SUPPORT OF YOUTH THEATRE PROJECT
We were very fortunate in March to have the news that the
Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society, Gold Coast
Inc. decided to renew their support of the Centre with a
$2,000 contribution toward our Youth Theatre Project. Held
annually, this project provides an extraordinary opportunity
for young pre professional actors to extend themselves
under the professional direction of a Queensland Theatre
Company Director. It involves an intensive rehearsal period,
followed by a performance in The Arts Centre’s venue,
The Space. ADFAS’ support of this project has a direct impact on the
young people in our community in developing their skills and
talents in the arts and for that reason we are truly thankful.
Catarina Hebbard has been confirmed as the Director for
2014 and the team is currently in the process of deciding
BENEFACTOR NEWS
which play to produce. Auditions for the cast will take
place in August, followed by the performance season in
September/October.
To give an example of how powerful this project and support
for it can be; the first Youth Theatre Project was Oh The
Humanity. This production was directed by Jason Klarwein
who went on to star in Glass Menagerie for La Boite and
earlier this year held the lead role in Queensland Theatre
Company’s MacBeth.
Ben Warren was also one of the lead roles in the first Youth
Theatre Project, later joining the ensemble of Grin and
Tonic and starring in our Independent production of The
Pillowman in June. Other participants in the program have
gone on to study at The Conservatory of Music, VCA and
even NIDA.
