Certainly The Pasadena Playhouse is a
theatre that celebrates great artists. Over
the years we have honored playwrights,
directors, actors, and even great painters in
our work. On frequent occasions, we have
also paid homage to those who have lifted
our spirits with their musical gifts. We have
done that with a full range of work that
celebrated such gifted musical artists as
Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Scott Joplin,
Chopin, Duke Ellington, and Stephen
Sondheim among others. We happily and
excitedly expand that impressive canon of
creations for the theatre that bring great
music to our stage with this production, as we honor the legendary rock icon
Janis Joplin.
As many of you know, when we announce each new season here at The
Playhouse, I always hold out a slot in the calendar for what we sometimes
describe as “A Theatrical Surprise.” Because a number of factors necessitate
our announcing the titles in the season long in advance of the actual production
dates, this allows me to keep my radar alive for something new and exciting that
may emerge over the many months between the announcement of the season
and the end of our theatrical year. That is exactly the case with this late
addition to our season.
Many months ago, I began to hear about the excitement that was being created
at some of our colleague theatres where Janis was rockin’ and filling the houses
with a special kind of energy and theatrical verve. Research quickly led me to
discover that Randy Johnson had created an homage called One Night With
Janis Joplin, which was being greeted with tremendous enthusiasm by
theatres in Portland, Cleveland, and Washington, D.C. Conversations with
fellow artistic directors at some of those theatres were overwhelmingly
encouraging about the concept of bringing this show to Pasadena. We were
fortunate that all things allowed this to happen and that both our producing
partners and Randy, the creator/director/writer of the show, felt that Miss
Joplin would be very much at home on the stage of our theatre. I am grateful
to all of them, and to the artists that you will see on stage at this performance
for bringing Janis’ incredible energy, musicality, verve, and hard rock energy to
our stage. And by the way, I should tell you that for this particular production,
dancing in the aisles is not just permitted, it is encouraged!
By the time you read this, we will be on the verge of announcing yet another
new season for our 2013-14 theatrical year. In addition to yet another exciting
“theatrical surprise,” next season will include plays and musicals both new and
old that hold the possibility of bringing to The Playhouse the theatrical diversity,
eclectic energy, and magical journeys that we hope to achieve year after year in
our theatre. I hope that those of you who are already subscribers will quickly
renew, and I invite those of you who are not to consider jumping on board the
train for each of those journeys by supporting us with your new subscription.
We greatly appreciate all of you who connect with The Playhouse in this way.

I
n these days where fame is instant and true
musicianship rare, the word "artist" is an oftenmisused statement. As we are held hostage to a
manufactured pop culture on a daily basis, I feel
we must constantly revisit our history and explore the
authentic forces that have shaped the landscape of
our lives. One of those authentic forces is Janis
Joplin. There never has been and never will be
another Janis Joplin. Her fame was earned - her
following grew as she grew - people were drawn to
her and she was drawn to them. Janis Joplin was a
true artist without contrivance or artifice. She was
an extraordinary woman. People like to say "ahead of
her time." I happen to believe she was right on time. After immersing myself in the culture of Janis
Joplin with Michael Joplin, Laura Joplin and Janis herself, the one prevailing message that kept
coming back to me was the commonality of the paths and influences that guide and shape all of us
and our spirit every day.
I am constantly astonished and inspired by the depth of the wisdom she imparted in her
music, her interviews, her writings, and her art. All of us are influenced and shaped by artists,
poets, musicians, thinkers and ordinary people. That's what creates new thought every day. Janis
provoked a lot of thought by simply being herself. At 3a.m., one week after I had spent time with
the Joplin family, I knew that this play would simply be One Night With Janis Joplin. It's a night
where Janis (one more time) could share her music, truths, influences, art, philosophy and spirit.
Janis lives on as most great artists eventually do, forever in the conscious collective. This isn't just
Janis' story: it's all of our stories in one way or another. We all touch and inform each other as we
travel this life. I trust that you, the audience, will take away with you a piece of Janis' heart.
The world is a better place because she was here for a moment.

JANIS JOPLIN
“I think I sound like a white chick singing the “blues.”…There was just something about
that ache I heard that got me bad. After all, the blues is just a bad women feeling good.”
T
hat voice – high, husky, earthy, explosive – remains
among the most distinctive and galvanizing in pop
history. But Janis Joplin didn’t merely possess a
great instrument; she threw herself into every syllable, testifying from the very core of her being. She claimed
the blues, soul, gospel, country and rock with unquestionable
authority and verve, fearlessly inhabiting psychedelic guitar
jams, back-porch roots and everything in between. Her volcanic
performances left audiences stunned and speechless, while
her sexual magnetism, world-wise demeanor and flamboyant
style shattered every stereotype about female artists – and essentially invented the “rock mama” paradigm.
Born in Port Arthur, Texas, in 1943, Joplin fell under the sway of
Leadbelly, Bessie Smith and Big Mama Thornton in her teens,
and the authenticity of these voices strongly influenced her
decision to become a singer. A self-described “misfit” in high
school, she suffered virtual ostracism, but dabbled in folk music
with her friends and painted. She briefly attended college in
Beaumont and Austin but was more drawn to blues legends
and beat poetry than her studies; soon she dropped out and,
in 1963, headed for San Francisco, eventually finding herself in
the notoriously drug-fueled Haight Ashbury neighborhood. She met up with guitarist Jorma Kaukonen (later
of the legendary San Francisco rock outfit Jefferson Airplane) and the pair recorded a suite of songs with his
wife, Margareta, providing the beat on her typewriter. These tracks – including blues standards like “Trouble
in Mind” and “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out” – would later surface as the infamous “Typewriter Tapes” bootleg.
She returned to Texas to escape the excesses of the Haight, enrolling as a sociology student at Lamar University, adopting a beehive hairdo and living a generally “straight” life despite occasional forays to perform
in Austin. But California drew her back into its glittering embrace in 1966, when she joined the Haight-based
psychedelic-rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company. Her adoption of a wild sartorial style – with
granny glasses, frizzed-out hair and extravagant attire that winked, hippie-style, at the burlesque era – further
spiked her burgeoning reputation.
The band’s increasingly high-profile shows earned them a devoted fan base and serious industry attention;
they signed with Columbia Records and released their major-label debut in 1967. Of course, it was Joplin’s
seismic presence that caused all the commotion, as evidenced by her shattering
performance at the Monterey Pop Festival,
which was captured for posterity by filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker; in the film, fellow
pop star Mama Cass can be seen mouthing
the word “Wow” as Joplin tears her way
through “Ball And Chain.”
Big Brother’s “Piece of My Heart,” on 1968’s
Cheap Thrills LP, shot to the #1 spot, the
album sold a million copies in a month, and
Joplin became a sensation – earning rapturous praise from Time and Vogue, appearing
on The Dick Cavett Show and capturing
the imagination of audiences that had
never experienced such fiery intensity in a
female rock singer. Her departure from Big
Brother and emergence as a solo star were
inevitable; she put together her own outfit,
the Kozmic Blues Band, and in 1969
released I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic
Blues Again Mama!, which went gold.
That year also saw her perform at
the Woodstock festival.
Joplin assembled a new backup
group, the Full Tilt Boogie Band, in
1970; she also joined the Grateful
Dead, the Band and other artists for
the “Festival Express” railroad tour
through Canada. Her musical evolution followed the earthier, rootsier
direction of the new decade, as reflected in her final studio album, the
landmark Pearl. Embracing material
such as Kris Kristofferson’s gorgeous
country ballad “Me and Bobby
McGee” and her own a cappella
plaint, “Mercedes Benz,” the disc
showcased Joplin’s mastery of virtually all pop genres. The latter song
was, along with a phone-message
birthday greeting for John Lennon,
the last thing she recorded; she died
in October of 1970, and Pearl was
released posthumously the following year. The quadruple-platinum
set became the top-selling release
of Joplin’s career and, in 2003, was
ranked #122 on Rolling Stone’s “500
Greatest Albums of All Time.”
In the years since, Janis Joplin’s
recordings and filmed performances
have cemented her status as an icon, inspiring countless imitators and musical devotees. Myriad hit collections,
live anthologies and other repackaged releases have kept her legend alive, as have one-woman shows such as
the hit Love, Janis (which Joplin’s sister, Laura, helped create) and 2009’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe “Best Solo
Performance” nominee Janis. A documentary film, produced by Jeff Jampol in tandem with Spitfire Films, is currently in development. In 1988, the Janis Joplin Memorial, featuring a bronze sculpture by artist Douglas Clark,
was unveiled in Port Arthur.
Joplin was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and posthumously given a Grammy Lifetime
Achievement Award in 2005. But such honors only made official what rock fans already knew: that she was
among the greatest, most powerful singers the form had ever known – and that she’d opened the door for countless artists across the musical spectrum.

Ladies sing the blues
Janis Joplin shares the stage with the Blues Singer, who represents the artists that
influenced her. The blues evolved out of African-American work songs and is the basis of jazz,
rock, R&B and hip-hop.
BESSIE SMITH (1894 –1937) earned the title of “Empress of the Blues”
by virtue of her forceful vocal delivery and command of the genre.
Her singing displayed a soulfully phrased, boldly delivered and nearly
definitive grasp of the blues. In addition, she was an all-around entertainer who danced, acted and performed comedy routines with her
touring company. She was the highest-paid black performer of her
day and arguably reached a level of success greater than that of any
African-American entertainer before her.
ETTA JAMES (1938 – 2012)
Blues, soul, jazz, R&B, and rock vocalist Etta James
forged a five-decade career with an alternately powerful
and poignant voice gracing over a dozen hit singles and
earning her four Grammys and a prominent place in the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
NINA SIMONE (1933 - 2003) was one of the most gifted vocalists of her
generation, and also one of the most eclectic. An American songwriter, pianist and arranger, Simone sang a mix of jazz, blues and folk
music in the 1950s and ‘60s. A civil rights activist, she wrote songs
promoting the movement.

She is a member of The American Spiritual
Ensemble. Having performed in the Portland
Center Stage (world premiere) and Cleveland
Play House productions, she is excited to reprise
the Blues Singer in One Night With Janis Joplin.

Joplin in 3 different productions of Beehive and
was nominated for both the LADCC and The
Ovation Awards. She is thrilled to be part of this

Perry, Della Reese and Stevie Wonder. TV
credits: "Southland," "2 Broke Girls," "Vegas,"
"Bones" and recurring appearances on "Dexter"
and "Conan." Kim's vocals are regularly featured
on the hit TV show "Sons of Anarchy." Major
stage credits: Aint' Misbehavin', Once on This
Island, the original cast of Nuncrackers and The
Women of Brewster Place, for which she won
an Ovation Award, and NAACP Nomination for
Best Lead Actress.
ROSS SELIGMAN (Music Supervisor, Bandleader,
Guitar) returns to One Night with Janis
Joplin after performing in the show at Portland
Center Stage (world premiere), Cleveland
Play House and Arena Stage in Washington,
D.C. Oregon regional theater credits include:

Seligman appears regularly on the Portland
jazz scene with his group, Echo Jazz Trio, and
he just released his new record, Run with Me,

Portland, Oregon.
STEPHEN FLAKUS (Guitar) Is just jazzed to
return to the theater with One Night with Janis
Joplin. A native of Oregon, Stephen grew up
in Jacksonville, Florida, where he attended the
University of North Florida, earning a bachelor’s
in classical guitar. Recent work includes One
Night with Janis Joplin at the Cleveland Play
House and at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C.

PATRICK HARRY (Bass) was the bassist for One
Night with Janis Joplin at Portland Center
Stage (world premiere), Cleveland Play House
and Arena Stage. Most of Patrick’s work is
as a freelance bassist in Portland, Oregon.

TYLER EVANS (Keyboard) returns to One
Night with Janis Joplin after its debut at
Portland Center Stage and subsequent run
at Cleveland Play House, and Arena Stage in
Washington, D.C. He has music-directed and
performed in various other Portland productions
including Spring Awakening, Live On Stage; West
Side Story - piano, Cabaret - keyboard and
accordion, Sunset Boulevard - keyboard,
and Oklahoma! - piano, Portland Center Stage;
and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor
Dreamcoat, Broadway Rose. He is a Washington
State University Master's alum.
MITCH WILSON (Drums) After completing his
degree in music performance from The New
School in New York, Mitch has been performing
up and down the West Coast, including his
hometown of Portland, Oregon. Working
alongside A&R directors from EMI and Capitol
Records, Mitch has acted as Band Leader for
various pop singers including European import
Ruth-Anne Cunningham. In early 2012, he
helped jump-start the Mike Tyson: Undisputed
Truth production at the MGM Grand in Las
Vegas, which then moved to Broadway under the
direction of Spike Lee. Mitch has worked with a
wide range of industry heavyweights, including
Branford Marsalis and Wynton Marsalis, Jerry
Naylor, Bernard Purdie, Mick Gillette, Terell
Stafford, Benny Golson, David Sonnenberg, Rob
Stevenson and The Pretty Reckless featuring
Taylor Momsen, among others. Mitch has
recently relocated to New York City and is
currently playing with the group Kid Confidence.
He is so excited to be back with the Janis
Joplin cast. He would like to thank The Pasadena
Playhouse and Randy Johnson for this wonderful
opportunity.
DAVID MILNE (Saxophone) had the honor of
playing saxophone in One Night with Janis
Joplin at Portland Center Stage (world premiere)
and Cleveland Play House. He recently appeared
in Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth, directed by
Randy Johnson, at the MGM Grand in Las
Vegas. He has performed in the following shows
at Portland Center Stage: It Ain’t Nothin’ But
the Blues and the all African-American cast
production of Oklahoma!. A product of DePaul
University’s renowned music program in Chicago,
David has been active in Portland, Oregon for
over a decade as an educator, teaching privately
and working within the local school system.
When not onstage running his own band or
performing as a sideman, he can be found in the
studio producing, arranging, engineering and
mixing with the creative team Board & Batten.
LEE THORNBURG (Trumpet, Flugelhorn,
Trombone) Trumpeter Lee Thornburg has been
playing with the best of the best throughout
his career. He toured with legendary Wayne
Cochran and the C.C. Riders and Supertramp,
then found himself on the road with Nicolette
Larson’s band, and with Lowell George of Little
Feat. He was also a member of the group Tower
of Power for almost a decade in the 80's and
90's. His list of recording credits spanning 4
decades reads like a who's who from the ranks
of soul, R&B and pop. He has performed on
hundreds of recordings; with a diverse group
of artist including that it Engelbert
Humperdinck, Ledisi, John Mayall, Art
Garfunkel, Toto, Josh Groban, Carly
Simon, Edgar Winter, Lalah Hathaway, Pink, Etta
James, Glenn Frey, Heart, Michael McDonald
and Ray Charles naming just a few. Thornburg
has toured and performed with numerous music
legends including Rod Stewart, Tom Petty, Aaron
Neville, Ray Charles, Bonnie Raitt, Huey Lewis,
Dwight Yoakam and Clint Black. Lee was an
original and founding member of the blue-eyed
soul band Jack Mack and the Heart Attack and
a member of the famed Tonight Show band from
2001 to 2006.
PETE DISIENA (Trumpet) Pete is an active
musician in the Los Angeles area. He has
played the lead trumpet chair for some of Los
Angeles, best big bands such as the Bill Holman
Orchestra, Johnny Mandel Big Band and Bill
Watrous’ Refugee West. He has worked and
recorded with artists such as Michael Buble,
Natalie Cole, Michael Bolton, Muse and others.
Pete has worked on the musical reality T.V shows
of “The Voice” and “American Idol.” He has also
recorded on various motion picture soundtracks,
most recently being Ice Age 4 and Parental
Guidance. Past shows that Pete has been in the
pit for here at The Pasadena Playhouse include
South Street, Twist, and Stormy Weather.
Janis Joplin Janis' brother and sister, Laura
and Michael Joplin, took over the Janis Joplin
Estate in 1975. "Neither my brother nor I were
involved in the entertainment industry. We were
isolated from connections,' says Laura. Handling
the licensing and other assets of their late
sister's work and career, however, it's been a very
productive partnership. Teaming up with JAM,
Inc. in 2007 to carry their sister's legacy forward,
the Estate has a theatrical documentary now
in production, a Star on the Hollywood Walk of
Fame, a full retail apparel line, new releases, two
books on the way, and much more coming.
ONE NIGHT PRODUCTIONS, LLC/ DANIEL
CHILEWICH / TODD GERSHWIN (Producer) is a
New York-based entertainment production
company that produces the national tour of One
Night With Janis Joplin. Additional properties
produced by Gershwin and Chilewich include a
number of unique musical productions revolving
around the iconic music and legacies of George
and Ira Gershwin, including Here to Stay – The
Gershwin Experience, and the successful
musical, ‘S Wonderful. Other recent productions
include the national tour of the Tony Awardwinning show Blast, the Broadway production
of Godspell, the Harold Arlen celebration Over
the Rainbow, and the new gospel musical being
developed with multiple Grammy award winning
recording artist BeBe Winans. In addition to
his theater producing work, Todd Gershwin also
has a diverse background in managing sports
events, public relations, and marketing. Todd has
helped to manage numerous opportunities for
the George Gershwin music business, spanning
musical theater, symphonic, motion picture,
and television projects. Todd has also worked
with a diverse group of corporate clients such
as Reebok, Pepsi, Geico, TIAA-CREF, Allstate
Insurance and Nike. Todd’s event background
includes managing numerous events at venues
such as Madison Square Garden, Nassau
Coliseum, and the Waldorf Astoria. Previously,
Todd was a founding partner at Clutch
Media and Marketing as well as Worldwide
Marketing & Media Group, two leading New
York marketing agencies. Todd holds a B.A.
in Management & Communications from the
University of Michigan, where he was recently
awarded an alumni career achievement award.
Daniel Chilewich has extensive experience
in international trade, business, law and
entertainment development. Having spent
years developing complex joint venture projects
with partners in China, Russia and Europe,
he has most recently been concentrating on
development, production and marketing of live
events, theatrical performances and recorded
media projects with various artists and music
catalogs. Dan is a founding partner of Premiere
Media, LLC, an events marketing and production
company located in New York. Formerly, Dan
was a partner at Clutch Media and Marketing, a
leading New York media and marketing agency. Dan holds a B.S. in Economics from the Boston
University School of Management and a J.D.
from the American University Washington
College of Law. He continues to practice in the
entertainment and intellectual property fields.
RANDY JOHNSON (Creator/Writer/Director) is
a graduate of the USC School of Theatre in
Los Angeles. For over three decades, he has
produced, directed, or written some of the most
groundbreaking and landmark theatre, events,
and concerts on the world stage. Randy's work
and direction has been seen in such diverse
venues as regional theaters across the US and
Canada, Off Broadway, the West End in London,
Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, Wembley
Arena, the Gibson Amphitheatre, Madison
Square Garden, the Grand Ole Opry, L'Olympia
in Paris, and Le Sporting Club in Monte Carlo,
Monaco. Randy began his career as co-producer
of Larry Kramer's The Normal Heart starring
Kathy Bates and Richard Dreyfus at the Las
Palmas Theatre in Hollywood. He is the force
behind theatrical stage portraits of such musical
icons as Janis Joplin, Elvis Presley, Conway
Twitty, Louis Prima and Keely Smith. Randy is
the original producer of Always...Patsy Cline,
which under his aegis became one of the most
produced musicals in the United States - he
produced over 500 productions, six national
tours and the record-breaking run at the Ryman
Auditorium in Nashville and the off-broadway
production featuring Margo Marindale. He also
executive produced the MCA cast album. Samuel French, Inc. has published Randy's playwright
work. He directed such diverse artists as Audrey
Hepburn, Katharine Hepburn, Carly Simon, Mike
Tyson, Liza Minnelli, Tammy Wynette, Melissa
Manchester, Barbra Streisand, Elton John, Little
Richard, Sandra Bernhard, Marianne Faithful,
Michael Bolton, Garth Brooks, Shania Twain,
and John Mitchell. He directed Pope Benedict's
recent New York appearance featuring a special
performance by Kelly Clarkson. He is the director of the historic Elvis in Concert, which has
toured the world for almost 15 years and is in
the Guinness Book of World Records. Elvis the
Concert and Carly Simon's Moonlight Serenade
aboard the Queen Mary 2 are available on DVD
and are seen on PBS, BBC and ITV annually. For
Steven Spielberg, he directed the Olympic scale
Grand Opening of Universal Studios Islands of
Adventure. He also directed Bernie Taupin's
Commitments to Life at the Universal Amphitheatre, raising over 7 million dollars for AIDS
Project Los Angeles. Recipient of the Crystal
Apple Award for his work with AIDS Project Los
Angeles, Volunteer of the Year for LA Shanti and
two ISES Awards as Best Director for his aerial
ballets/events with Cirque du Soleil's choregrapher Debra Brown. For One Night with Janis
Joplin, he has been nominated as Best Director
for two Broadway World Awards in Cleveland
and Washington, D.C. Randy is a member of the
Dramatists Guild, the Society of Stage Directors
and Choreograhers and Canadian Actors' Equity

Adventures in Hotel Crazy will be published in

JEFF CONE (Costume Designer) has been designing costumes for over 30 years. He worked at
Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre for 12 seasons followed
by a five-year stint at Seattle Opera. For the
last 15 years, he has been in Portland, Oregon
at Portland Center Stage. In that time he has
designed costumes for 60 productions. Of those
shows, 38 have been in the last five seasons at
the Gerding Theater at the Armory. Favorite
productions include West Side Story, Cabaret,
Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps, One Flew Over
the Cuckoo’s Nest, Sometimes a Great Notion, Snow Falling on Cedars and, of course, One
Night with Janis Joplin. Jeff has received
Portland Theater Community and Critics Award
for Outstanding Achievement in Costume Design

JOE WITT (Production Manager) is entering his
second season as Production Manager of The
Pasadena Playhouse. Other Production Manager

It’s You! (before transferring to The Pasadena
Playhouse, then Broadway). He managed the

Brad Enlow (Technical Director) hails from
Cleveland, Ohio where he began his career in
technical theater. His experience has taken him
across the country working in theaters throughout. He worked as the TD for University of the
Pacific for six years as well as several other
theater and opera companies before moving to
LA three years ago. In LA, he became the TD for
several small companies including Reprise Theatre
Company, Broadway's best. He has been here at
the historic Pasadena Playhouse since January 2012 and is excited to return for his first full
season. He wishes his family well and hopes you
enjoy the show.
ELIZABETH DORAN (Executive Director) hails
from Patchogue, New York, where she began
her career in theatre as a writer and performer.
After earning her B.A in theatre arts at SUNY
Fredonia, she became interested in building and
sustaining great theatre companies. She earned
her MBA in Entrepreneurship and Strategy
at Rensselaer in Troy, NY. She has served as
Director of Finance and Planning for the La Jolla
Playhouse, was Managing Director for Capital
Repertory Theatre (a LORT regional theatre
in Albany, NY) and most recently as Managing
Director of Los Angeles' own The Actors' Gang
since October 2008, where in partnership
with Oscar winner Tim Robbins, she expanded
international touring, outreach programming
and raised major gifts in support of artistic
development. She and her husband, Kwinn
Doran, a college professor and historian, have
made themselves at home in South Pasadena
with their two young sons, Giacomo and Ely and
welcomed a third child, Calypso.
SHELDON EPPS (Artistic Director) has been Artistic
Director of the renowned Pasadena Playhouse
since 1997. Before beginning his tenure at The
Playhouse, he served as Associate Artistic Director
of the Old Globe Theatre for four years. He was
also a co-founder of the Off-Broadway theatre,
The Production Company. Mr. Epps has directed
both plays and musicals at many of the country’s
major theatres including the Roundabout Theatre
Company, Manhattan Theatre Club, the Guthrie
Theatre, Playwrights Horizons, Seattle Repertory
Theatre, Arena Stage, and the Goodman Theatre.
He conceived the highly acclaimed musicals
Play On! and Blues In the Night, which both
received Tony Award nominations. He directed
productions of both of those shows on Broadway,
in London, and at theatres throughout the world.
Mr. Epps also has had a busy career as a television
director, helming episodes of shows such as
"Frasier," "Friends," "Everybody Loves Raymond,"
"Girlfriends" and many others. For more than a
decade, he served as a member of the Executive
Board of the Society of Stage Directors and
Choreographers. Mr. Epps received the James
Irvine Foundation Leadership Award for his efforts
and accomplishments at The Pasadena Playhouse.
Under his leadership, The Playhouse has earned
distinction for productions of artistic excellence,
critical and box office success and highly praised
theatrical diversity. Recently he Co-Directed
the Broadway production of Baby It’s You!, which
premiered at The Pasadena Playhouse.

Director’s Circle – $10,000-$24,999
There is a new girl in Pasadena – and her name
is Janis! I can remember her presence vividly in
the 60’s, and while I never had the opportunity
to watch her perform live, I was definitely a fan
(as so many of us were), and very appreciative
of her extraordinary talents, electric following,
and soulful presence. Having a legend like Janis
Joplin at the legendary Playhouse is a perfect
fit in a fabulously outfitted setting for a concert
– get ready for some joyful noise. Actually
“noises” since Janis’ powerful presence will be
accompanied by a character representing the
muse and inspiration of Janis, an infamous yet
anonymously named Blues Singer wrapping up
the inspiration of the likes of Etta James and
Aretha Franklin all in one package. This show guarantees a memorable life experience
of an “out-of-the-park” rock concert for the young, the old, the young at heart – and all
those in-between.

With One Night With Janis Joplin, I am reminded of the mission and breadth of The
Playhouse and what we do best. Whether our stage is welcoming a Noël Coward play
or a regional premier of one of America’s greatest rock 'n roll icons, all feel like home
here. We pride ourselves in bringing in and believing in all kinds of eclectic and powerful
works of the theatre, and with that mission, the power to further, preserve and amplify
all voices to assure its vitality for generations to come.

Janis Joplin will not be the only young performer on the stage with us this spring. On
her heels, we will welcome the 3rd Annual High School Theatre Festival on April 27th,
which has exponentially expanded since its inception thanks to the passion of Founder
Mary Lea Carroll and dedicated community support. This year, participating students
will take the stage to belt out their songs and share their acting talents among fellow
students and appreciative audience members in a non-competitive environment to
celebrate the magic of the theatre, and for us, to embrace our mission of nurturing the
talent of future generations. We hope you will all join us for this special event! (Please

It is your tremendous commitment and support that allows The Playhouse to develop
extraordinary plays and musicals, provide Outreach & Education, and foster new minds
and artists. It is hard to believe that Janis Joplin would have been 70 years old this
year. And it is tremendous how significant her influence still impacts us to this day. The
Playhouse shares the mantle of significant influence, and has for almost the past 100
years, and will continue to do so for many generations to come, thanks to all of you and
your generosity, and assurance of continued generosity.
We all look forward to your enjoyment of this very special show - and like The Playhouse,
it is quite a ride. Let’s hold on to every moment of it.

ll roads lead to real estate” is a Piken motto. Herbert and Marilyn know a good investment when they see one and this is why
they have been long time subscribers and supporters of their beloved Pasadena Playhouse. Based in Studio City, the Pikens
have enjoyed attending performances Downtown, on the Westside, in Hollywood and in Orange County...but they adore
their Row D seats here in Pasadena… “truly the best real estate in town!”.
For nearly fifty-four years, Herbert and Marilyn Piken have shared a deep love for each other, for their sons, for traveling, for
tennis, for dogs, for horses, for real-estate and of course, the theatre!
This young man from New Jersey met his
Brooklyn bride-to-be while vacationing in
Florida. Herbert was a quietly assertive
salesman, selling vacuum cleaners to people
who didn’t even have carpet! He later followed
in his father’s footsteps in the commercial real
estate business. Marilyn was known for her
great sense of humor and her serious
appreciation for the theatre which began at an
early age. They were meant for each other… “She
is the olive in my martini”.
While working for a Manhattan investor, Herbert
built relationships with many chain stores. It is
these contacts that would be the roots of his
success on the West Coast. Herbert decided he
needed to be where “the action was”…he didn’t
want to just broker deals, he wanted to buy the
land, build the buildings and lease the space.
The couple headed for California in the early
1960’s. The Piken Company took on the charge
of opening a total of 34 shopping centers,
beginning in 1965. He is credited with
bringing Albertsons to Southern California
and for creating deals with companies such as
GEMCO, Thrifty Mart, and Vons. He used his
negotiating and problem solving skills to build
responsibly and develop stores in controversial
areas. Herbert’s charm, honest eyes and
integrity won him the reputation of being a
“Developer with a Conscience”.
The real estate ‘road’ to California certainly did
pay off. The Piken Company is in good hands.
As President, son Robert is maintaining the Piken reputation and the company continues to be a leader in the commercial real estate
business. You don’t have to drive far to spot a PIKEN sign…a reminder of the entrepreneurial spirit that drove the family west.
Their son, Harry, manages a different type of real estate…Aquariums! His company, Coral Kingdom, provides aquarium set-up and
services for both freshwater and saltwater wildlife. His specialty is African and South American Cichlids, he breeds and raises these rare
tropical fish. As a fish enthusiast, he writes articles and provides photos for magazines such as, Tropical Fish Hobbyist.
Now retired, their oldest son Richard, did not stray far from the real estate industry. He found himself on the construction side of the
business. As a contractor, he focused his energy on building homes. Without a doubt, the Pikens have land and sea investments covered.
Herbert and Marilyn are a joyful couple who have always balanced business and home. They are still very active, although backgammon
has replaced their competitive tennis matches. Their dogs, Muffin and Lacey, keep them entertained. However, when it’s ‘show time’, the
couple will be found at The Pasadena Playhouse, enjoying a performance. We applaud their generosity…supporters like the Pikens help
keep the magic alive for audiences of all ages.

New Generations is an educational program that provides a
theatrical experience to groups that include many members
of our community who have never been to the theatre
before in their life. These groups have included It’s Time
for Kids, the Boys and Girls Club, Pasadena Unified School
District, and others. Every New Generations group is paired
with The Pasadena Playhouse Teaching Artists who guide
the group through an evening that includes a concessions
voucher for each participant and enriching discussions
prior to and following the performance. These unique and
key components of the program actively engage these
participants in their night out, get them thinking about what
they are seeing, processing the experience as a whole, and
opening a door that hopefully leads to life in which the arts are appreciated and important.

Pasadena Playhouse Alumni & Associates
Some people may be surprised to discover there once had been an accredited college associated
with The Pasadena Playhouse. Many more might be amazed to know that even though the school
closed in 1969, The Pasadena Playhouse Alumni & Associates is still a vital organization with
nearly 350 members around the world. The PPA&A publishes a quarterly newsletter to help our
members stay in touch with their classmates and keep up to date with the events at The Playhouse.
Our yearly Brunch meeting - the 60th annual Diamond Jubilee gathering to take place June 9,
2013 – provides another opportunity to keep the bonds strong. Over all, the Alumni Association is
most proud of our scholarship program for needy students of the theatre. Thanks to a generous endowment from
alumnus Henry Sumid (‘40), the PPA&A has bestowed college scholarships over the last six years with an aggregate

THE AMBASSADORS OF The Pasadena Playhouse
The Ambassador of the Month is Colin Barnes. He and his family are the
founders of Presidio, a company which finds the right caregivers for elderly
people in need. His enthusiasm for the Ambassador program is infectious and
he is alive with ideas about how to make the Ambassadors even more effective
and widespread. He especially loves sharing the stories of the rich history of The
Playhouse with his guests.
The Ambassadors are happily greeting new friends attracted by the amazing One
Night with Janis Joplin and hope they join the rest of our loyal subscribers and
supporters who enjoy the work at The Pasadena Playhouse.
The Friends of The Pasadena Playhouse
The Friends of The Pasadena Playhouse, The Playhouse’s volunteer corps, currently have a membership of over
400. Whether serving as ushers, cooks, archivists, tour guides, merchandise sellers, gardeners, or
envelope stuffers, the group is known for its commitment to helping The Playhouse in any way it can. As the
support group of The Playhouse, they are extremely active in the day-to-day operations of the theatre. Although
mainly a service organization they also have several fund raising efforts. The money earned from these events
is used to purchase items needed by the staff to help with the daily operations at the theatre. Since they were
founded in 1979, the Friends have continued to be an effective and valuable asset to The Pasadena Playhouse.

This year's event will be held at a private club in Pasadena on Saturday, June 1st, 2013. This
fundraising event will include dinner, dancing and cocktails. We will be honoring Kathleen K.
Johnson, Tony award-winning Broadway producer (Hair, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Glengarry
Glen Ross, The Lyons) who has had a love affair with The Pasadena Playhouse since she attended
