A Message from the President
The financial year ended 31st March 2009 was a very
challenging year having to cope with falling donations,

the implementation of cost control measures were not
introduced across the board at the start of the year, operating
costs and expenses would have ballooned significantly. Cost
management and measures will be introduced from time to time and become a regular
and permanent feature to reduce wastage and indiscriminate usage of its resources.
In the coming year, Swami Home will be introducing the in-house ITE Training
Programme to train the trainer for nurses, nursing aides and nursing assistants. Under
this programme, the Home will conduct its own assessments and tests and issued
successful applicants certificates.
This is to establish the commitment of the
Management towards continuously looking for progress and development of skill and
knowledge to improve the quality of care services for the elderly clients.
For personal and spiritual development of
members, volunteers and even staff engaging in
the service activity, attitude plays a very
important part. It is not enough to simply do
good works but of equal importance is our
attitude during service activity. We have to
change our attitude. We must have an attitude of
humility and appreciation for the opportunity to
do any service activity. The opportunity itself is
a gift given to us. The service activity which we
undertake should not strengthen our ego but to
reduce it. We should not dwell on the good we are doing. Whatever the work we do, we
should do it as an offering.
To quote, “when you offer a meal to a hungry child or a blanket to a shivering brother
on the pavement, you are placing a gift of God into the hand of another gift of God.”
“God serves. He allows you to claim that you have served”.

OPERATIONS REVIEW
SWAMI Home provides 7 integrated services catering to more than 600 elderly in a
month. The next few pages will take you on the accomplishments of our departments in
aiming to achieve our mission of providing holistic care to the sick and needy elderly.
Residential Care
SWAMI Home’s Residential Care Services
comprise of 190-bedded Geriatric and 50-bedded
Dementia Ward. Our residents consist of mainly
the elderly requiring long term nursing care as
well as people with physical and mental
disabilities. Our team includes a pool of dedicated
nursing staff as well as a social worker whereby
both the nursing and medical needs, as well as
psychosocial needs of the residents are looked
into. It is our priority to ensure that all our residents’ needs are adequately met and that
they are comfortable during their stay in SWAMI. The team works hand in hand to
provide comprehensive and holistic care for our residents.
To further augment the level of care for our
residents, we have adopted an integrated
framework approach which is supported by a
team of resident medical officer, geriatrician,
psycho-geriatrician, rehab physician, pharmacist,
podiatrist, speech therapist, and dietician. The
residents benefit substantially from these
additional professional cares without having to
pay an extra fee.
In addition to nursing and medical care, we also place emphasis on the psychosocial
needs of the residents whereby we involve them in a variety of activities. We aim to
create a socio-friendly living environment for the residents; this is made possible with
the joint efforts from our team of occupational therapists, together with the support of
nursing staff as well as our social worker.

On a monthly basis, birthday celebrations for
residents and staff are organized. It is a fun-filled
session where there are competitive games with
attractive prizes to be won. On some occasions, there
will also be some performances put up by our
volunteers.
Since the opening of SWAMI Mama Store – “Sunshine
Shop” in 2007, it has been very well received by the
residents as they get a chance to make purchases of small items like tidbits, cakes etc. It
has now become part of their routine where they look forward to its opening every
fortnight eagerly.
Cooking therapy, assisted by a volunteer, is one of the
activities the residents enjoy also once a week. They
helped to get the ingredients ready and then get to eat
the food after cooking.
Social outings coordinated by the physiotherapists and
the nursing staff, about three times a month; help
connect the residents with the ‘outside world’.
Reminiscence therapy is another useful intervention with residents living with
dementia. There is a room specially decorated with items and pictures of the olden
days, which aim to create a nostalgic environment for
the residents. Every week the residents gather in this
room to share their past experiences with the nursing
staff.
In addition, we adopt a different outlook with sofa
sets, sewing machine and personal cupboards for the
residents in our Dementia Ward. These aim to create a
cozy, home-like living environment for the residents.
Continued training and upgrading of our staff is an area that we focus on. Clinical
learning sessions are conducted monthly by our visiting geriatrician for staff to acquire
new knowledge and to develop their nursing skills. In order to improve communication
skills for our foreign staff, weekly Hokkien and English lessons are being conducted
internally by our local staff.

In addition, SWAMI has been taking in nursing students for clinical attachments from
Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Tsao Foundation This has offered our senior nurses the
opportunities to educate and share experiences with the students on geriatric and
dementia care. This in turn will benefit and enhance the students’ understanding in the
area of healthcare.
In our continuing bid in establishing SWAMI Home as a conducive and interactive
living environment for the residents as well as our staff, the Residential Care
Department is on a mission to create more social activities, continued effort to motivate
our staff and to come up with new care management directives for our residents and
staff.
Dementia Residences
The Dementia Ward started operation in April 2006
with a capacity for 50 bedded. With the increasing
demand for dementia care on the rise since
inception, the ward has always been running at full
capacity.
Specialised medical services are provided to the
dementia residents. They are:1. The in-house medical doctor provides medical services 3 times a week, (Monday,
Wednesday and Friday).
2. The visiting geriatrician comes on every
Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
3. The senior psycho-geriatrician from Tan
Tock Seng Hospital visits the residents
twice a month (on Wednesday).
4. In addition to the above medical
professional services, the Home also
engaged the services of rehabilitation
doctor, a dietician, pharmacist, podiatrist
and speech therapist on a regular basis.

The following schedules have been incorporated in the daily activities of the dementia
residents to serve their needs:
1. Mondays to Saturdays: - Morning physio activities for respective residents are
being carried out by the PT/OT Department.
2. Tuesdays and Thursdays: - Calisthenic exercises are initiated by OT staff, and are
followed later by cooking therapy and retraining for activities for daily living.
3. Friday mornings:- some residents assist in the sale of cookies and delicacies
which are prepared by residents assisted by staff .
4. Friday afternoons: - other activities
are gardening, film showings and
reminiscing therapy.
5. Tit bits from our “Mama” store are
offer for sale twice a month on
Friday afternoon.
6. There is monthly outing of
residents with staff to various
places of interest like food centre,
beach located in the vicinity of
Sembawang. The outing is put on hold due to the influenza H1N1 outbreak.
7. There is dog therapy every 3rd Friday of the month.
8. Other activities include outing with volunteers, interacting with volunteers and
karaoke sessions every Saturdays and Sundays.
9. There are activities like “beautifying” female residents with colourful dresses,
cosmetics, nail polishing and hairdo in lighting up the ward with cheerfulness,
and joy.
As caring for the dementia required highly specialized skill and knowledge, the Home
sends and upgrades the staff for continuous training and to attend courses, seminars
and workshop both locally and overseas in order to provide the best possible care
because no two residents are alike. Group sharing session amongst our staff on health
care topics is held twice a month. During such session the staff share their views and
experiences to learn from one another so as to give better care and attention to the
residents.
Finally, we hope in time to come the Home we can provide the best possible care and
quality services for all our dementia residents.

Dementia Day Care
The main aim of our Dementia Daycare Centre
(DDC) is to provide appropriate care to the
people with dementia. DDC provides social
and therapeutic activities to enhance its clients’
quality of life. It also provides respite to family
members and caregivers.
Clients who joined DDC are being assessed
and then put on a programme of activities
according to their mental and physical abilities.
Activities
include
reality
orientation,
reminiscence therapy, games, art & craft and karaoke. Daily exercises such as chair yoga
and step exercise are conducted to maintain and improve functional mobility. Besides
indoor activities, there are outdoor facilities like the koi pond, herbs & spices garden
and also the vegetables & fruit gardens for them to explore.
The number of referral had increased by 7 to 52 as compared to the last financial year
(FY) which was 45. However, only 26 of the 52 (50%) accepted the programme. Of the
remaining 50% who did not join the programme, were due to various reasons such as
applicants refusal or family members were undecisive.
This FY saw a high increase in the number of closed cases, 5 deaths and 29 discharges.
The discharges were due to admission to nursing homes, home-care by maids/family
members, relocation and clients' refusal to attend.
Our target for the client outcome management is out of 20 new clients admitted to the
DDC programme, 10 (50%) will achieve at least two goals set up in their Individual
Care Plan (ICP) within 4 months. The goals set up in ICP are clients improve in memory
recall, perform better functionally in ADL, become physically stronger, interacts better
and have better self-control in their behaviour. Of the 26 clients accepted to the
programme, 11 (42.3%) achieved 2 goals in 4 months. We were not able to achieve the
target for the client outcome due to the condition of the new cases where they were
discharged within 3 months of admission. These clients either admitted to hospital for
unmanageable behaviour or to nursing home for higher level of care.
Customer Satisfaction Questionnaires on information and support in care giving were
given to 15 caregivers/family members. 94.5% indicated satisfaction with the service
received with regards to information and support.

The Day Rehabilitation Centre aims to provide
quality rehabilitative therapy for clients suffering
from stroke, Parkinson’s disease and those who
require rehabilitation for regaining their functional
ability.
The centre also incorporates social and
recreational activities such as outings, karaoke
sessions and art therapy for clients to enhance
their social well being and also to encourage them
to interact with one another in the centre.
For this financial year, the number of referrals has increased slightly as compared to last
financial year. The main source of referrals comes from Agency of Integrated Care
(AIC) which is currently the mandatory route
of referral from hospitals.
The centre sees more younger stroke clients
now as compared to last financial year and
with this trend, we also have more
discharges as most of these younger clients
take shorter time to regain their functional
ability and is able to function in the
community.

Home Medical Services
In FY 2008/2009 SWAMI Home Medical
continues to provide our services to those
clients who are homebound.
As at 31st March 2009 we have 46 home
medical clients as compared to year
ended 31st March 2008 which we served
only 40 clients. In FY 2008/2009 we have
30 new admissions and 15 deceased and
13 discharged. Most of the discharged
clients are being admitted to nursing
home as their medical conditions worsen
and required close monitoring.
During the Home Medical visits by our doctor he had reviewed clients’ general
conditions and their medications and prescribed the medications that the client needs.
In total the Home Medical team had
made 319 visits to all our clients
during the year.
SWAMI Home Medical & Home
Nursing team will continue to provide
total quality care with sincere tender
love and dedication.
On behalf of Home Nursing and
Home Medical clients we would like
to express our gratitude to SWAMI
organization and donor for the their
generosity, as some of our clients without SWAMI assistance will not be able to afford
the service even though after mean testing they come under 75% subsides.

Home Nursing Services
For the financial year ended 31st March
2009 we had served more than 50 Home
Nursing clients.
During the FY 2008/2009 we had 46 new
admissions, 23 clients passed away and 18
were discharged.
Majority of the
discharged clients was admitted to
nursing home as their conditions worsen
and required continued nursing care. In
total our teams had made 2,625 visits to
our clients
The team continues to provide services to the frail, semi and non-ambulant clients so as
to enable than to live within their home and with their love ones as long as possible.
The Home’s services comprise of:
1) Wound Management
2) Change of nasogastric tube &
Urine catheter
3) Blood pressure and glucose
monitoring
4) Care giver teaching
5) Injection
6) Supervision of medication

Home Help Services
To age successfully, it is vital that the older person is able to access and utilise formal
and informal support. For the past few years, Swami Home’s Home Help Service has
been providing domestic assistance, medical escort and personal grooming to
homebound needy elderly individuals, SWAMI Home

of high standard. Moreover, the Ministry of House Keeping

Community Development, Youths, and Sports Personal Grooming 7
(MCYS) and the National Council of Social Services
(NCSS) went further to enhance the services we provide by ensuring that home help
assistance is also handed out to those who do not meet the current admission criteria.
At present, the SWAMI Home Help Services Department has ten home-helpers, who
provide services to patients on a daily basis, including Sundays and public holidays. As
of 31st March 2009, the Home has served 170 needy homebound patients, which has
provided great respite to more than 80% caregivers, who are mainly in the low-income
earning category and thus, are unable to employ domestic helpers to attend to the needs
of the patient.
Furthermore, majority of our home help users are elderly persons; more than 85%, most
of whom are multiple service users. Also, most home-help users receive meals-onwheels and medical escort assistance; whereas only 4% receive personal grooming
assistance and 16% obtain housekeeping assistance. In most cases, these services are
provided at a minimum charge; however, we do have some users who get services at no
charge at all. With this assistance, homebound patients’ basic needs of daily living are
met, enabling them to continue living in the community without having to resort to
institutional care.
Service utilisation statistics over the years has shown that there has been a consistent
need for meals-on-wheels and medical escort assistance. With increasing community
outreach efforts instilling service awareness together with a growing need for these
services, it is anticipated that user numbers will increase significantly, which will put a
strain on the current available resources. Hence, it is becoming increasingly important
to look further into this matter and develop possible solutions so as to better cater to the
needs of the increasing number of users.

Meals-On-Wheels Assistance
Meals-On-Wheels assistance is
provided
to
homebound
patients who do not have the
ability to cook for themselves.
As of 31st March 2009, 117
clients received this service,
with most of them mentioning
that they were satisfied with
the meals and that it had
helped them greatly mainly
because they are unable to cook
for themselves.
“Mr Abdul Wahid bin Adon lives in the Yishun . Mr Adon is
63 years old and has spinal cord disease. He is unfit to
work and has difficulty to walk. He has a 12-year old
daughter with Down Syndrome. His wife is serving jail
term and he was referred to Swami Home Help Service
for Meals On Wheels. He had to depend on his friends to
either buy him food or cook for him and his daughter. He
was facing financial strain buying food from the hawkers
centre. Swami Home Help Services provide him with two
hot meals everyday from Monday to Sunday. He has
utilised our service for the past two months and has
commended to the social worker in the prison that:
“By availing the meals service provided by Swami Home in
recent months, I do not have to worry about my meals
everyday. I receive two hot nutritious meals delivered to
my house. It is affordable and hygienic. I am very happy
with Swami Home Help Services and also happy to know
they provide escort service as well”.
The menu is prepared by our
cook and approved by the
dietician. A high quality is
maintained for all meals in
order to provide patients with nutritious food. Also, the food is packed hygienically
using disposable plastic containers and is kept warm in airtight insulators before being
delivered to the patients. At present, we deliver meals to the patients twice a day, as it is
our utmost concern to provide hot meals to our service users.
Medical Escort Assistance
Most of our service users are referred by the
hospitals during discharge planning; hence,
they are required to attend regular medical
follow-ups
to
ensure
the
effective
maintenance of their health.
As at 31st March 2009, 116 patients received
medical escort assistance. Despite our best
efforts to cater to every patient’s needs, there
have been times, mainly due to a very busy
escort schedule, where the department has
been unable to provide the service to all users using our own vehicle. In such scenarios,
we have outsourced transportation and gotten private ambulances and at times, taxis to
help escort our users to the hospitals or polyclinics for their medical appointments.

Currently we also liaise with hospitals to change appointment dates during peak
period, keeping in mind the client medical condition.
House Keeping Assistance
Housekeeping assistance is usually
rendered to homebound elderly
persons who are staying alone and are
unable
to
carry
out
daily
housekeeping tasks. Currently, 23
users require this assistance and we
are looking to reach out to more
homebound
or
semi-homebound
elderly persons staying alone; usually
in a one or two room flat, so that their
home conditions can be further
improved.
Mr Palaniappa, a 70- year old man lives alone in his flat in the Ang Mo Kio. He is
unable to carry out the daily household chores and ensure the overall maintenance of
his home. Tan Tock Seng Hospital referred him to Swami Home so that he could gain
from the Home’s home maintenance services. Swami Home has greatly helped him by
getting in people to clean his house once a week, which has enable him to return to a
clean and spruced flat.
According to Mr Palaniappa,“I am very happy with Swami Home’s Home Services, my
house is much cleaner and better maintained and I have Swami Home’s staff, who do a
wonderful job to thank for it. Thank you Swami Home”.
Personal Grooming Assistance
This service is mostly provided to wheelchair-bound or bed-bound patients. As at the
end of the FY 07/08, we have 7 patients requiring this assistance.
Trained home-helpers are deployed to carry out the personal grooming so that careful
handling of the patients can be achieved without causing them any harm. Moreover,
privacy of the patients is strictly observed to ensure their dignity is maintained at all
times.

Future Goals
We hope to reach out to more needy elderly persons who are suffering in the
community but are unable get any help. Also, outreach activities will encompass a
major portion of our work for the next financial year, so as to increase community
awareness of the Home Help Services and its use, which is on top of our continuous
effort in improving our administrative work processes.
We hope our continuous process of intervention for frail elders with multiple service
needs has enabled them to remain autonomous in the community for a long time as
possible.
Rehabilitative Therapy
Physiotherapy Department and Occupational Therapy Department are the two arms of
rehabilitative services that are available at Swami Home. The physiotherapy aims to
administer services to accelerate and optimize client’s physical, emotional, intellectual,
sensory, and psychological functions using different therapeutic programs.
PHYSIOTHERAPY DEPARTMENT
In FY 2008-2009, the physiotherapy team has implemented highly effective exercise
programs for 252 residents and 183 day care clients representing a 35.93% increase of
clients served compared to that of FY 2007-2008. In addition to the significant increase
in the number of clients served, we have also achieved the following goals:
- Decrease in the number of refuse
cases by 20% thus increasing the
number of client’s motivated to
do exercise by 20%.
- Increase in the number of client’s
who can propel wheelchair by
25%
- Due to the increase in staff
strength, we are able to attend to
more passive clients
With concerted effort to better focus on our clients exercise regime and their consistent
attendance we found out that:

- Out of the 252 residents served in
our daily exercise programs 67.8% of
the clients maintained their current
function, 11.9% showed improvement
as to general mobilization and
ambulation, and 20% has functional
decline secondary to associated illness
and old age.
- Out of the 106 Day Rehabilitation
Centre clients, 49% has significantly
improved in their muscle strength,
joint range of motion, balance and
walking, 46% of them maintained their
current function regardless of how
long they are in the wheelchair and 5%
of them decrease functional status
which is usually caused by another
stroke or falls at home.
- Out of the 77 Dementia Day Care
clients who joined the exercise
program, 1.29% has totally improved
in their functional abilities and get
back to their workplace. 75% has benefited from the exercises and maintained their
current function thus delaying the progression of dementia, and 23% declined in
their function which is caused by the disease progression.
By focusing into a more interactive training approach we are able to encourage closer
rapport with our patients. They feel at home in Swami Home making a point that
exercise is part of their daily routines.
In our commitment to meet our client’s needs, our physiotherapy center is open for 6
days a week to both the residential and day care clients. During weekdays, daily
physiotherapy treatment sessions are given to 176 residents, 30 Say rehab clients and 25
dementia day care clients. On Saturdays, we serve 40 residents and 13 day cares.
Currently, our team comprises of 1 physiotherapist who evaluates and plans the
treatments, 3 physiotherapy assistants to help implement the treatment and 2 health
care assistants to support the team. To ensure that our clients sustain our programs, we

verify results by evaluating their progress every 3 months and reassess their cases every
6 months.
In addition, our Home Physiotherapy program is still ongoing and has helped
improved the lives of 15 clients from Sembawang, Yishun, Marsiling, and Ang Mo Kio
communities. Our therapist continues to be faithful in going to our client’s respective
homes to treat, exercise and educate caregivers in proper handling of the patients,
correct transfer techniques, proper bed positioning, 2 hourly turning and encourage the
patient to do exercise at home.
Conversely, if not for the physiotherapy intervention we provide for our clients there
will be an:
1. Increase in the level of dependency of our clients secondary to immobilization.
2. Increase in the number of falls cause by muscle weakness, poor balance and poor
trunk control.
3. Increase in the number of care which would lead to increase in the number of
staff needed.
4. Client’s depression due to hopelessness.
5. Increase in the occurrence of cardiopulmonary problems.
6. Increase in the number of discharge due to death.
These are the physiotherapy training programs we provide:
1. Upper limb strengthening and endurance exercises- mainly to improve muscle
strengths of the arms and hands. We use shoulder pulleys, pulley with weights,
spring exercise and dumb bells.
2. Lower limb endurance and strengthening exercises- facilitated by doing cycling,
NK table, gait training in the parallel bars, ramp, or staircase and walking with
frames and quadcanes depending on the client’s ability.
3. Pain management- use of ultrasonic therapy, paraffin wax, electrotherapy,
massage, hot and colds packs to relieve or alleviate pain.
4. Manual therapy- passive range of motion and stretching exercises done
manually by the therapist.
As we continue in providing higher level of care to an increasing number of clients, we
upgrade our skill and knowledge by attending courses and seminars. The
physiotherapy team is also strengthened by additional workforce to improve our
services. To sustain our efforts, we continued with our firm partnership with Tan Tock
Seng Hospital.

Their rehabilitation consultants came to integrate intensive rehab for 5 residents with
potential for full recovery. Our team and clients have benefited from this program.
To face new challenges ahead, our physiotherapy team is dedicated all the way to
provide the best quality care for our residents and clients with sincere, tender love and
dedication.
OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY DEPARTMENT
The Occupational Therapy team works hand in hand with the Physiotherapy
Department in providing direct rehabilitative services to the residents in the
Nursing and Dementia Home Care, Dementia Day Care and Day Rehabilitation
Center. Our main objective is to continue in providing therapeutic and
purposeful activities to achieve functional outcome that will prevent further
disability and enhance individuals well being and their quality of life.
The Occupational Therapy team also works together with other staff, family and
volunteers in carrying out the following OT programs, which are specifically
drawn up:
1. Individual and Group Exercises –
Active clients participate in activities
such as stick exercise, step-in exercise,
chair yoga, calisthenics and ball games
for better coordination and physical
fitness. Passive exercises are given
mainly to those residents who are bedridden and have to be assisted by the
OT staff during the passive range
motion.
Rehabilitation program are
provided also to orthopedic and musculoskeletal group of clients in Day
Rehabilitation Unit.
2. Sensory-Cognitive
Stimulation
Activity – Musical therapy is being
given for 30 minutes to the residents for
sensory stimulation; Reality Orientation
and Reminiscence Therapy are given to
rehabilitate residents who suffer from

disorientation. These therapies are being carried out individually or through
short group sessions. Fruit Tasting Program is another stimulating activity to tap
the clients decreasing sensory awareness.
3. Leisure and Diversional Program – is enhanced with the following activity:

Monthly Birthday Celebration is filled with mini-olympics games suited
for both ambulant and wheelchair bound clients. Everyone is invited to
participate and joined
the
celebration
including
family
members. For FY08-09,
there is an increase
budget of more than
100% to be utilized in
buying gifts and game
prizes. Thanks to a
special donor who
sponsored some of the
costs. The residents
really enjoyed and frequently participated more often and always look
forward to the mini-olympic game.
Karaoke Session is very popular and enjoyed by our day care clients.
Every weekend, volunteer groups would help to organize the singing
sessions.
Bingo game is a favourite activity and very well received by the residents
and invariably they look forward to the prizes. Volunteers also organize
and contribute prizes.
Mahjong session is good reminiscence therapy for patients in Dementia
Day Care. It stimulates and assists their mind to recall some of their good
old days and gaming skills. Donation of any mahjong set is most welcome
so that more demented residents can benefit.
Gardening – is being re-initiated by OT team in the 3rd quarter of 2008, a
group of Day Care clients has started to made the small plot at the back of
the home ready for planting seeds. Our team has managed to find donors
for some flowers to put on a pending project, the Butterfly Garden.
Outing Trips – trips are arranged to take the residents for community
events or watching cultural shows. The residents have the opportunities
to interact with the community.

Arts and Crafts Activity – Participation in arts and crafts, gives our clients
a sense of accomplishments despite their physical limitations.
Pet Assisted Therapy – This therapy is being done by a group of
volunteers coming
in
once
every
month with their
dogs.
Residents
welcomed
and
enjoyed every dog
walking exercises.
With the help of the
dogs
and
its
handlers, residents
become
more
stimulating and responsive when engaging in such activity.
Life Skills Program – This program is supported with Meal Preparation
Activity. Clients engage in peeling vegetables and cooking activity.
Clothing Care Activity is a meaningful exercise and keeps the residents
from physically wandering about aimlessly. Helping in folding clothes
makes them feel useful and productive. “Money Management” program
allows the residents to manage the money and the sales of tit bits in the
stall they are manning. All are enthusiastic in finding what they can
purchase in the stall with their money.
With a wide range of OT activities available to engage the clients there is never a dull
moment. It is encouraging to see clients involving themselves in more and multiple
activities. These activities have definitely helped in promoting their overall well being
and self esteem. Their lives in the Home have become more meaningful after engaging
and receiving direct OT care and services.
Staff Training and Development - External
The HR Department plays a key role in helping to drive effective performance and
higher productivity. The HR policies formulated and processes need to go beyond
sustaining operations, to realizing values at every level of staff deployment.
In line with our mission to provide holistic quality care with love and dedication for the
elderly and the needy driven by teamwork and professional, we have been

continuously improving our quality, teamwork and professionalism by sending our
staff for trainings and seminars on personal and professional developments. Upgrading
of skills and knowledge through training and development to meet our service need

Community and Volunteers
For financial year March 2008-April 2009,
SWAMI Home accommodated more than
3,000 visitors ranging from primary
students, young professionals, religious
groups, international visitors and even
tourists.
Our
volunteers, mostly
university
students and primary schools who come
in big groups spent more than 500 hours
to befriend and entertain our residents as
well as to assist our physiotherapists and occupational therapists in facilitating
exercises. While most of the students were interested in these types of activities, others
preferred to help in handicraft sessions, arts and crafts or provide grooming services

and some groups came up with outstanding activities where our residents truly
enjoyed.
Apart from engaging our residents to participate in their therapeutic exercises, regular
visits of religious and ethnic groups play an important role in reminding our residents
on cultural and religious festivities such as Hari Raya Puasa, Christmas, Moon Cake
celebration, and etc.
SWAMI Home is thankful to companies and grassroots organizations, which
regularly sent invitations to SWAMI Home residents for an excursion. Grand opera
shows, lunch or dinner gatherings, and visits to parks, markets,
and shopping centers ---all of these had contributed bringing joy and appreciation to
our residents.
SWAMI Home encourages more volunteers and organizations to visit our residents and
do their part in serving these needy elderly. We are thankful to the following

CALENDAR OF ACTIVITIES
The 2008-2009 Financial Year was marked as a busy year for SWAMI Home as it
welcomed several groups of students mostly to spend their Community Involvement
Program (CIP) at the Home, volunteer groups befriending our elderly, visits from
religious groups, other organizations and government agencies.
For the year ended 31st March 2009, on the average SWAMI Home would receive about
295 visitors in a month, mostly composed of students. These students mingled with our
elderly residents and eventually learned and experienced how we run the Home in
serving these needy elderly.

Figure 1 showed that SWAMI Home received the most number of visitors at 538 during
the month of February when

SWAMI Home not only provides eldercare services but also played an active role in
further nurturing and inculcating to younger generations the values of respect and care
to elderly. As what the student from the Ahmad Ibrahim Secondary School said “
Befriending the elderly residents at SWAMI Home taught me to be patient and made me realize
not to abandon my parents”.
Similarly, welfare centers and school from abroad visited SWAMI Home to learn and
share on the diverse operations and social services we provide to Singaporean elderly.
SWAMI Home would continuously host groups – either local or foreign in order to
create a loving and caring to our dear residents.

OUR HOLISTIC APPROACH
SWAMI Home advocates a holistic approach to maintain the health of all aspects of the
self—physical, mental, emotional, spiritual well being of its staff and clientele.
The library is open everyday to all
staff. Here, staff has access to
various books ranging from
medical to self-help books donated
mostly by the National Library
Board.
Computers and Internet access
were provided too for the staff to
communicate with their families
abroad.
A library to nurture the intellect…

Our multi-religious prayer room holds
various deities to accommodate all
religious backgrounds.
A prayer room for spiritual growth…
Staff would gather at the pavilion
for chitchat or just to have a feel of
the cool breeze.

satisfy the staff’s most favorite
past time – singing. Singing
enlivens the staff after a hard day’s
work.
For two years now, karaoke
competitions were held with
attractive prizes to be won by our
