MESSAGE FROM GOVERNOR OF
SOUTH AUSTRALIA
MESSAGE FROM PREMIER OF
SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Over the past 25 years Festival
Hellenika has been dedicated to
the maintenance, development,
promotion and celebration of
Hellenic arts and culture.
The program for the 2016 Festival
Hellenika is exciting and a fitting
celebration of the event’s 25-year
positive contribution to the life of
our State.
Just as much as it captures the
diversity within the Hellenic
community, the festival also
succeeds in engaging the broader
South Australian community in this
celebration and has enriched our
state’s cultural diversity.
Few festivals have better opened
our hearts and minds to Greek
culture than Hellenika, and I am very
confident that this year’s version will
be an outstanding success.
I would like to congratulate Festival
Hellenika on its 25th Anniversary
and acknowledge the dedicated
board and hard-working volunteers
who have ensured the success of the
festival.
HIS EXCELLENCY THE
HON HIEU VAN LE AO
Governor of South Australia
Hellenism, which is both ancient and
modern, has enriched South Australia
since virtually the start of European
settlement, and it has helped make
ours a diverse, harmonious and
outward-looking society.
In advance, I commend the artists,
performers, organisers, volunteers
and sponsors for, together, making
this latest Festival Hellenika
uplifting and unforgettable.
HON JAY WEATHERILL
Premier of South Australia
MESSAGE FROM MINISTER FOR
MULTICULTURAL AFFAIRS
For the past 25 years, the South
Australian Council for the Greek
Cultural Month has organised
cultural events of the highest quality.
South Australians have come to
appreciate Festival Hellenika as an
annual highlight and an important
event in South Australia’s arts and
entertainment calendar.
Festival Hellenika invites all South
Australians to experience the
influence of Hellenic culture across
the arts. It provides opportunities for
local artists and builds links across
communities. It exemplifies our
Government’s vision for deepening
our understanding and appreciation
of the wealth of our South Australian
multicultural society.
As the Minister of both Multicultural
Affairs and Volunteers, I
acknowledge the immense
contribution of volunteers, sponsors,
performers and supporters who work
tirelessly to make Festival Hellenika
such a wonderful experience for the
thousands of guests each year.
I give my best wishes to the South
Australian Council for the Greek
Cultural Month for another
successful Festival, and I encourage
all South Australians to come and
enjoy the feast of Hellenic culture
and cuisine on offer.
HON ZOE BETTISON MP

MESSAGE FROM STATE LIBERAL LEADER
On behalf of the South Australian
Liberal Party, I’d like to congratulate
the South Australian Council for
the Greek Cultural Month on the
25th anniversary of Hellenic Arts in
South Australia. This is a fantastic
achievement and shows that the
Greek spirit is well and truly alive in
our state.
Festival Hellenika is an annual
gathering of artists whose creations
are shared with the broader
community. What I admire about
this festival is that everyone – from
any background – is welcome to
participate and express their passion
for Hellenic arts and culture. It’s
great to see such an eclectic mix of
live performances, screenings, artists
and events in this year’s program.
I encourage all South Australians
and visitors to experience what’s on
offer and celebrate cultural diversity
in this state. We are fortunate to live
in a country that embraces different
cultures and fosters cultural
expression. A big ‘thank-you’ must
go to the organising committee,
volunteers, performers and artists
who have worked hard to ensure
the 25th anniversary of Hellenic
Arts in South Australia is celebrated
accordingly!
I wish you a wonderful festival,

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
ΜΗΝΥΜΑ ΤΗΣ ΠΡΟΕΔΡΟΥ
Welcome to Festival Hellenika® 2016.
This promises to be our most exciting
year yet as we celebrate our 25th
anniversary.
Through our annual gathering of artists,
we will continue to offer a wide ranging
series of performances, screenings,
presentations, exhibitions, concerts
and events that reflect the talent and
passion that have engaged audiences
throughout South Australia. We aim
to reach people from all walks of life,
including a commitment to young people
from early childhood through to tertiary
level. Furthermore we are proud of our
creative achievements and our longstanding aim to encourage, stimulate and
promote all aspects of artistic creation
as we celebrate Hellenic culture.
Since its inception, Festival Hellenika
has showcased an extraordinary
range of events. As we look back over
our archives, a major highlight has
been our yearly ‘Musical Hellenika’
concert now presented at The Adelaide
Festival Centre. In addition to the
engagement of local performers, our
musical productions by international
artists have been highly acclaimed. Our
program has encompassed all styles of
Greek music ranging from traditional,
to the contemporary including
internationally renowned Mikis
Theodorakis and Manos Hajidakis, the
Rembetika of Markos Vamvakaris and
Vassilis Tsitsanis, to the popular music
of Yiannis Markopoulos and Stavros
Xarhakos with an estimated 20,000
patrons attending.
®
It would be remiss of me if I did not
mention two significant events in our
festival’s history that marked our
efforts to connect with main stream
artistic bodies, a concert on the music of
Greece in conjunction with the Adelaide
Symphony Orchestra in 2004 and in
2003 a major collaboration with Nexus
Multicultural Art Centre, where we
presented the inspirational ‘Oud Project’.
We have presented a rich array of
talks by scholars in their chosen
fields, including Dr Stahis Gaunlet on
Rembetika, Mr Peter Ewer on ‘Forgotten
ANZACS’, Prof. Alfred Vincent on Nikos
Kazantzakis, Mr Li Chenggui on ‘Zorba
in China’, Prof. Han Baltussen from the
Classics Department of The University
of Adelaide on numerous classical topics
and Prof. M. Tsianikas and students of
the Greek Dept of Flinders University on
Konstantinos Kavafis.
Festival Hellenika® is made possible
through the passion and commitment
of our committee members, who I thank
for their ongoing support. I would
like to thank our major partners - the
General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad,
the Adelaide Festival Centre, Adelaide
Pavilion, Argon Design, Multicultural
SA and all our generous sponsors for
encouraging, supporting and
believing in us.
It is my firm belief that art engages and
draws people together in a myriad of
ways. Over the next few months, I trust
we will succeed in immersing you in the
rich adrenaline rush of our Festival.

Yiannis Papaioannou was born in Kios of Asia Minor in 1914. At the age
of 8 and during the catastrophe of Asia Minor he resettled in Piraeus
with his mother and grandmother. As a refugee child he endured many
hardships and had to work from a young age to support his family.
He had a passion for music and learned to play the mouth organ,
the mandolin, the accordion and the guitar. He fell in love with the
bouzouki when he heard an instrumental recorded by Ioannis Halkias in
America. He bought a bouzouki, quickly became a virtuoso and started
composing his own songs.
His first hit in 1935, ”Faliriotissa”, broke all sale records of the time.
He composed many songs sung by the most popular singers of his
era. Whilst still actively performing with his longtime friend Vassilis
Tsitsanis he was killed tragically in a car accident in 1972.

Concert / Συναυλία

ΞEΝΙΤΙΑ - Journey Songs of the Greek Diaspora.
The phenomenon of emigration for centuries is associated with
Greek life.
The temptation to flee and the rampant desire to return to the
homeland is evident from Homeric times. In all its aspects Greek
music is inseparable from Greek daily life therefore it could not
remain disengaged when having to deal with the strong emotions of
separation, the anxiety about the unknown destination, the sorrow
of nostalgia and the longing for an eventual return.
Thousands of songs have been written expressing these feelings
in all historical phases of Greek migration and sung from generation
to generation. The two-hour programme of our concert including
Traditional, Popular and Contemporary songs is a tribute to the
generations of those who once tasted the sorrows and the joys
of emigration.

NEGOTIATING A
HYPHENATED IDENTITY
Post-Second World War
migration from Greece
to Australia was actively
encouraged between 1952
and 1970. By the early 1980s
there were over 250,000
Greeks living in Australia. First
generation Greek migrants
successfully sustain an identity
that promotes difference within
a host nation while maintaining
a connection to homeland.
