Moved by the persistent pursuit
of his ideal and consistent support
for filmmakers of director Chi, on
Oct. 23 during the Kaohsiung Film
Festival the magnificent scenery
and panoramic views of Beyond
Beauty–Taiwan from Above will be
shown for the first time in Taiwan
on an IMAX screen, using state of
the art digital screening equipment
to present the film perfectly,
letting viewers fully appreciate
the imposing majesty and power
of the film. Let us transform into
birds, and see Taiwan a new from
a different level!
Taiwan is like our mother, raising
e a ch g e n e r a t i o n , s o n s a n d
grandsons. But in our home,
our land, there is also much
development, and much natural
disaster. In “Beyond Beauty–

November
After the relocation of Hong Mao Gang village in 2007, Hongmaogang Cultural Park remained
behind. Kaohsiung City Government Bureau of Cultural Affairs allowed people to deeply
experience the historic and cultural background of Hongmaogang through images of the old
settlement and interactive exhibition techniques. Here, you can experience the shock of
coming close to freighters as they come into port- the only such experience in Taiwan. In the
evening, stroll over to the Revolving Restaurant built in Gaozi Tower and appreciate the
finest seafood. Appreciate the faith to seafood displayed by the people of Hongmaogang,
and the diligence with which they make every dish. We warmly invite you to take a walk
around Hongmaogang Harbor and experience a culinary and visual banquet!
Almost 100million New Taiwan
Dollars were spent in making
“Beyond Beauty–Taiwan from

expensive Taiwanese documentary
ever. The director, Chi Po-lin,
spent almost 3 years shooting it,
Nien-Jen Wu provided the voiceover, and Ricky Ho, winner of
the Golden horse Award for Best
Original Music for Seediq Bale,
composed the soundtrack.
The script of “Beyond Beauty
– Taiwan from Above” states:
“Some say Taiwan is very small,
but have you ever seen it?”
This sentence impresses us
deeply. “Beyond Beauty–Taiwan
from Above” contains much of
Taiwan’s scenery which we have
never seen: towering mountain
ranges, luxuriant oceans, winding
rivers, expansive emerald fields,
orderly fisheries – and there’s also
familiar, fascinating Kaohsiung.
This previously unseen bird’seye view is presented on a silver
screen, and is all the more moving
for it.

are shown in their entirety, and
this section is certainly worth
reflecting on and recognizing. I
hope that we who grew up in this
land will take good care of our
home, our mother – Taiwan, look
at her appearance, see both her
beauty and her sorrow.
We who were born in Taiwan can
only see far when we climb to a
height for the most part; it’s only
then that we can see more. Until
this year, when there was finally
someone who took a helicopter
high into the air, changing into a
flying bird, and used film to record
precious records of our homeland:
he was the director Chi Po-lin, and
his film is called “Beyond Beauty–
Taiwan from Above.”

Adept at storytelling through a forceful style of photography, and revealed the disorder
and ridiculous nature of interpersonal relationships. Sorrentino often reflected on civic
and social political events from the perspective of middle-aged men, and his beautiful
photography did not lose its humanity; on the contrary, it is filled with poetry and
imagery. From The Consequences of Love in 2004, his works became more and more
diverse. 5 of his films were selected for the Cannes Film Contest, winning awards twice
- he is the middle-aged director most favored by Cannes in recent years.

A singer at a low-end nightclub hides out at a convent after her lover dies of a drugs overdose, and she meets a group of offthe-wall nuns while in hiding. The nuns range from one who writes sensationalist pulp fiction under a pseudonym to another
who takes drugs, and another hooked on masochism. But their private lives and perverse foibles may be in jeopardy when a
new mother superior arrives to take charge of the convent.
The Godfather of American alternative film, he combined the roles of director,
writer and performer, and could also speak well and handle photography.
Pink Flamingos, shot on a shoestring budget in 1972, packed drive-in
cinemas that year. It was only in August of this year that it was screened at the
Lincoln Center. His work is teasing and humorous, covering mainstream
aesthetics and values; his rich, diverse artistic experiments have added much
wonder to the course of the development of international cinema.

A retrospective with four early films of noted Spanish director Almodóvar. An invitation to have a peek at Almodóvar’s
most Spanish and fantastic camera languages.
Beginning with Goodbye, South, Goodbye, Lim Giong's first film accompanied by music, he gathered many
independent musicians from Loh Tsui Kweh Commune and other communities. The film's theme, "Self-Extinction," won the Best Film Theme Award at the Golden Horse Awards. In 2001, the rhapsodic electronic
music composed for Millennium Mambo again won an award; this time for Best Original Film Song. He
subsequently worked with the famous Chinese director Jia Zhang-ke to produce The World and Still Life, the
two becoming an excellent combination. The music in their films was based on environmental sound, fused
with the new and traditional style of traditional theater music, which came to be Lim Giong's calling card.

In his early years, he made many documentaries, which defined his subsequent core
interest in “humanistic” drama, coming to be an internationally-recognized Japanese
director of his time. He explored vital questions of life using conscientious and
detailed techniques; everyday yet deep family stories, which revealed the essence of
existence, importance of the everyday and the domain of feelings.

Leonardo-Mona Lisa-The Myths
Leonardo da Vinci and the Mona Lisa consist of a genius unequaled in his own time or our own and
the world's most famous painting. The myths and mysteries surrounding the painter and his painting
are evergreen topics in art history and contemporary culture, and have launched numberless quests
and dreams. The Leonardo-Mona Lisa-The Myths , which is being held in collaboration with Italy's Museo
Ideale Leonardo da Vinci, presents some of the heavyweight oil paintings made by da Vinci and his
collaborators in the wake of the Renaissance, including the third Virgin of the Rocks works judged to
have been jointly created by da Vinci and his collaborators. This exhibition also includes a wide range of
classic adaptations of the Mona Lisa by such modern masters of art as Marcel Duchamp, Fernand Leger,
and Philippe Halsman. The exhibition is expected to include 125 sublime works, including paintings
and physical models. We will take you on a tour of the past 500 years and show you some of the most
classic artistic marvels from the Renaissance to the present.

The Development of Art Galleries in Kaohsiung
This exhibition displays related historical documents, interview records and other materials regarding the
exhibitions and activities held by the selected art galleries in Kaohsiung from the 1960s to the present.
These art galleries are selected for their unique characteristics, such as “continuity”, “interactivity with
local contexts”, “exhibition curation” and “special meanings”, as well as their significant influences on and
contributions to Kaohsiung’s art development. This exhibition provides an analytical review of the operation
histories and characteristics of these galleries, helping to fill the void about gallery development, particularly
the galleries in Kaohsiung area, in related research of Taiwan’s art history.

Oil Paintings by Sheng-yang Cheng
In the twenty-odd years of his artistic life, Sheng-yang Cheng has graced the canvas with
beautiful scenes of the fishing harbor and old houses from his hometown, or daily activities of
local people, all painted with the utmost compassion. Cheng's early works were much influenced
by Cubism; in recent years, the artist has taken a turn to a more simple style which reflects his
lyrical and liberated state of mind.

Joan Miró: Women, Birds, Stars
Celebrated as one of the greatest modern Spanish artists, Joan Miró (1893–1983) created more than
ten thousand artworks in a variety of styles across many media, including oils, prints, sculptures and
mixed media. In a career spanning almost a century, Miró's vision and energy were vividly reflected
in a very personal visual language inspired by the forms and colors he observed in nature. All of
his artworks present aspects of a cosmic panorama, synthesized into a personal system of codes
representing a microcosm of the artist's interior world.
Through some 86 artworks from Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona and the Miró family collection, the
exhibition reveals Miró's mature style of the 60s and 70s, when women, birds and stars became the
major motifs of his artistic expression.

Crossroads.Another Dimension A Cross-Strait
Four-Regions Artistic Exchange Project 2013
This year marks the fifth “Cross-Strait Four-Regions Artistic Exchange Project”. It is jointly organized this year by the He Xiangning
Art Museum from mainland China, Macao Museum of Art, APO, and Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts
from Kaohsiung (with the other three organizations invited by the He Xiangning Art Museum). The
exhibition of the Project this year takes on the theme of “Crossroads. Another Dimension” with the
intention of reflecting the artistic and cultural realities of four different regions across the Taiwan Straits
in the modern world of globalization and reflecting how artists move around among the four regions
in pursuit of survival and more creative space. This exhibition displays over 41 multimedia works by 16
artists recommended by the curators from the four regions (four artists recommended respectively by
each curator). Their works demonstrate a brand-new kind of diversity in artistic expressions and narrative
exchanges. The fact that the exhibition is held respectively in the four regions is also an extension of the
intended discussion of spatial mobility and displacement, showing the artists’ different interpretations
of and participation in different layers of “spaces”.This exhibition provides an unprecedented platform of
dialogues among the artists in four regions across the Taiwan Straits.

Traveling with the Artist
Since 2006, the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts (KMFA) has held several Austronesian artist-in-residence programs with the
participation of totally over 20 artists from Taiwan and other Austronesian countries. As part of the 2013 Multi-cultural Arts
Development Project, the Austronesian artist-in-residence program this year will start on September 12th. The program this year will
last for around six weeks and end on October 23rd. In this program, two indigenous artists from Taiwan: Labay Eyong and Pahaulan
Cilan, and two artists from New Caledonia: Nicolas Molé and Stéphanie Wamytan, are invited. The themes of their artistic creations
revolve around discussions about their indigenous cultures, using their unique images and symbols to express their concerns about
different social phenomenon and issues in lives. By holding the artist-in-residence program, KMFA aspires to provide a platform for
artists from home and abroad to have more interactions and exchanges of artistic creation.

In local legend, majestic performances, accompanied by the many variations of digital art, produce an unforgettable
cross-discipline performance. “Musigraphic images,” coming from symphonic poetry or developed from trembling
rhapsody, bring together the words of the gods and, human art, technology, media, music and dance. This gives rise
to a diverse civil climate, and uses it to explore the expansive potential of local culture.

at this exhibition will feature light and
shadow, hue, composition and charm,

still holds to the natural school of painting,
giving visual performances composed of diverse styles. Accordingly,
we can see something of the sensation of Rembrandt's Old Dutch

Clay is the most local element. It is molded to display different local characteristics, complementing hydrology, geography, and other
conditions, nurturing different industries and settlement cultures. In the agricultural era, people lived amid the water and grass, and
developed settlements following earth and water. The clay was trampled underfoot, after undergoing adjustment with water and
being quenched by fire, became solid brick, which was built into a house in which to take shelter from the elements. This exhibition
begins from the soil of Kaohsiung, discussing how people used the characteristics of soil to develop ceramics, and how ceramics
flourished, declined and changed. It recounts the development of the southern ceramic brick and tile industry from the Japanese
Colonial Period to the early period after the Retrocession of Taiwan, creating a chain of memories by linking stories of people and
settlements. We’re sure that the public will be introduced to the production and the local culture accumulated within traditional bricks
and tiles, and will reconsider the connection between modern people and earth.

Cieding and Hunei districts are stated in the north-west of Kaohsiung, where Erren River and Tainan City meet. In the past, they
were separated into the two sides of Jockan (The inner sea of Jockan), one of Taiwan's southwest seashore three Great Ancient
Lagoons: Cieding is a sandbank which borders the sea, while Hunei is a dune plain which borders on the land. The development
of the two areas can be traced back to the 17th century, when fishermen from Fuzhou Province gradually settled Cieding. The
Ming-era military garrison policy made many soldiers settle in and develop Hunei, a state of affairs which has continued to
the present day – many of the inhabitants of Cieding fish, while agriculture is prominent in Hunei, while the great fish-ponds
developed in Jockan Lagoon are a sight common to both Cieding and Hunei.

Who is the Monkey King? –Exhibition of South-East Asian Puppetry Displaying
This exhibition especially introduces two artists to local viewers: Mr. Su Hsin-yi, winner of the 2012
Kaohsiung Culture and Art Award and a senior local artist; and Ms. Cheng Yen-shu, wife of Mr. Su
and a noted female artist. Though different and independent in their artistic styles, they have become
the best partners of each other exchanging ideas of artistic creation throughout nearly 40 years of
marriage. Through this exhibition, viewers can have a clear picture of their respective development as
an artist through the display of over 100 representative works by this artist couple and also appreciate
the rich life wisdom hidden in their works.
