Hovering 20 metres above the rocky shore of Lake Ontario, Lion’s Point

The point was originally named after the Sparks family, who purchased
the land in 1818. The family used to hang a lantern atop the point to warn
passing ships. The point is a popular viewing area, offering glimpses of
Toronto’s distant shore, famous for its fantastic skyline.

75th
anniversary
Women make history
Just imagine. The year is 1941 and the world is at
war. If you’re a young woman leaving your home
and loved ones to work at Defence Industries Limited
(DIL), the largest munitions factory in the British
Commonwealth, your life is about to change. While
you will miss your friends and family at home, you also
know that you, along with thousands of other women,
will be making an impact, helping the men on the front
lines in their battle for victory.
2016 marks the 75th Anniversary of Defense
Industries Limited (DIL) and the Town of Ajax is
celebrating the contribution the Bomb Girls have made
to the war effort and the establishment of the Town
of Ajax. DIL was an institution that helped change the
perceptions of women in society and forever shaped
the lives of the individuals that worked there.

Ajax's Town Hall building interior features
many similarities to the inside of a ship.
There is a variety of memorabilia from the
HMS Ajax, including pieces of the enemy
ship, Admiral Graf Spee on display as well
as wartime posters and historical photos. The
HMS Ajax anchor is located outside the Legion
on Hunt Street. The bell from the 8th HMS
Ajax hangs in the Council Chambers at Town
Hall and is rung by the Clerk to signal the
start of each Council Meeting. Take a look!
More than 700 of the 800 streets in the Town
of Ajax are named in honour of Veterans.
Want to find out if your street was named for
a Veteran? Call the Mayor’s office at

For the women who worked at DIL, war meant more
than uncertainty for the future. These women worked
with dangerous explosives, filling shells eight hours
a day, six days a week for 50 cents per hour. While
they earned significantly more than standard Canadian
wages of the time for their hazardous labour, it was
30 cents per hour less than their male coworkers, who
were hired from nearby General Motors in Oshawa.
It wasn’t all work for the Bomb Girls. There were
fun-filled activities such as public dances and bowling
events. “There was a great sense of community at
DIL because we only had each other to rely on. We
played ball, went bowling and danced. There were
always many activities for us to do. We were all in
it together,” explains Louise Johnson, a native of
Saskatchewan who made the trip to DIL at the age of
18.
The women of DIL were part of the inspiration for
the hit series Bomb Girls, which ran on the Global
Television Network in 2012 and 2013. After two
seasons on the air, the show was cancelled and fans of
the show launched a campaign to reinstate the series.

A made-for-TV movie called Bomb Girls: Facing the
Enemy aired in 2014.
It is because of these women that allied forces fighting
overseas were kept supplied with ammunition and
were able to win the war in 1945. To read about the
personal experiences of some of the original Bomb
Girls, visit ajax.ca/DIL.

munitions plant
Prior to WWII, the Town of Ajax didn’t exist. Far
enough away from the nearest city, and battlefields
to ensure safety and security, the farm fields east of
Toronto seemed ideal for a major munitions plant. The
Canadian Federal Government expropriated 2800 acres
that ranged from Duffins Creek to Pickering Beach
Road and from the lake to just north of the 401.
With the location for its major munitions plant
established, the government promptly dispatched
army surveyors. By 1941, this farmland had become
the tightly secured, highly secretive site of Defence
Industries Limited, Pickering Works.
Before the end of the war DIL would employ more
than 9,000 people at peak production and have its
own water and sewage treatment plants, a school
population of over 600, 30 miles of railroad and 30
miles of roads. By the end of the war in 1945, DIL
workers had filled an estimated 40 million shells.
With the new workers settling in, it wasn’t long before
the tiny post office in Pickering Village which had
served the plant, was overwhelmed. Only one thing
stood in the way of the DIL having its own post office
– the place needed a name.
T h e T o w n o f Aj a x w a s
named
DIL workers had settled in the newly built houses and
formed a community. In order to have a Post Office,
the community needed a name. To determine a name,
management at DIL held a contest for employees
during the summer of 1941. "Ajax" was the winner.
After the war, houses in the community were no longer
needed and were scheduled to be demolished, but a
DEFENCE INDUSTRIES LIMITED
petition was circulated to save the community. One
of the petitioners was Bill Parish, the second Mayor
of Ajax and current Mayor Steve Parish’s father.

Date: December 13 - 17, 1939,
World War II
Location: near the coast of Argentina and
Uruguay in South America, off the estuary of
the River Plate.
Event: A hunting group of 3 Royal Navy
cruisers (Britain’s HMS Exeter and HMS Ajax
and New Zealand’s HMS Achilles) tracked
down a German heavy cruiser (Admiral Graf
Spee) that had been commerce raiding since
the start of the war in September. During the
battle, the Exeter sustained heavy damage
and had to retreat from battle. The Graf
Spee went to port in Montevideo for repairs
while the Ajax and Achilles waited to pounce.
Rather than face the overwhelmingly superior
force that the British led him to believe
had been assembled, Hans Langsdorff,
captain of the Graf Spee, scuttled his ship.
Summary: It was the first major naval success
of the British Allied forces during WWII
and the battle was heavily celebrated.

One of Ajax’s most famous cycling routes is its
7km section of the Great Lakes Waterfront trail,
which hugs the Lake Ontario shoreline from
border to border. When it was first established
in 1995, the Great Lakes Waterfront trail was
a 270km multi-use route that extended from
Hamilton to Trenton. Thanks to the efforts of the
Waterfront Regeneration Trust and its partners,
today, the Trail is more than 1,600 kilometres
long and connects three Great Lakes (Huron,
Erie and Ontario), four bi-national rivers (St
Clair, Detroit, Niagara and St. Lawrence), three
UNESCO Biospheres, two National Parks, twenty
Provincial Parks, 500+ parks, beaches, conservation areas and heritage attractions. The annual
Great Waterfront Trail Adventure is an annual

PUBLIC ART TOUR
Public art, monuments and memorials enhance the
community and transform landscapes, open spaces, and
neighbourhoods. These artistic pieces make our community
an attractive and memorable place where people want to
visit, live, work and play. They build a sense of art, culture
and historical reflection within the Town, ensuring a creative
legacy is left for generations to come. There are a number
of public art pieces, monuments and memorials located
throughout Ajax…here’s just a highlight. To see what other
pieces are located in town, visit www.ajax.ca/onthemap
1. The Storm
This interactive sculpture captures one of the most dynamic, powerful and
energetic moments in the seasonal cycle of Lake Ontario. The Storm is a collage
of materials including a spiral of flowing native grass, waves of concrete, and
a mounded landform spiraling up to the impressive galvanized steel lightning
strike which symbolizes lightning stretching over the lake and the sails of the
boats that move across the water.
2 . Aj a x L e g a c y O b e li s k
Unveiled and dedicated on October 4, 2009, during the “Tribute to all
Veterans” event as part of the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of the River Plate,
the Ajax Legacy Obelisk is a poignant monument honouring those who have
served in past, present and future conflicts. Located at the entry to Veterans’
Point, the monument makes a strong statement on the Town’s naval heritage
and appreciation of the peace keeping measures undertaken presently and in
the future.
3. Veterans’ Point
Through a community-based waterfront master plan completed in 1995,
it was felt that the property at the foot of Harwood Avenue, the Town’s
ceremonial main street, ought to make a statement, and create a distinctive
cultural landmark to celebrate the past and present spirit of Ajax. This unique
landscape has been formed in the shape of a ship’s prow, representing the
H.M.S. Ajax. The four paths and sculptures represent the manufacturing lines of
Defence Industries Limited (DIL), the wartime munitions plant which began the
community that has become Ajax.
4 . W o o d H av e n
These four forged metal panels use whimsical stick figures to depict themes
of adult & youth interaction, community and family, compassion and caring,
and playfulness in the outdoors. The panels are configured to mirror each other
with the negative space in the centre depicting a tree. Mild steel bars and plate
have had every inch heated and hammered repeatedly, completely changing
the starting material’s shape. By doing so, the metal is drawn out, textured and
formed from singular blocks to create the sculpture’s individual components.
chaos. Straight linear tubes stretch towards the sky while water flows over
their tops, decorating the forms, making them shimmer.
6 . H M S Aj a x A n c h o r
On November 8, 1987, a memorial cairn with the port anchor of the HMS Ajax
as its centre piece was unveiled at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 322. This
memorial is dedicated to Canadians who died while serving with the Canadian
Armed Forces in overseas wars in this century, and of those who served on
ships named HMS Ajax.
7 . S o l a r S a il
A fantastic example of solar creativity, the giant “Solar Sail” is a unique,
one-of-a-kind solar structure that combines outstanding engineering and design
with Ajax’s nautical heritage. The photovoltaic sail is a major focal point for the
Town of Ajax Operations & Environmental Services Centre, generating .8 kW of
energy, and draws people’s vision to the 100 kW solar installation project on
the facility’s roof.
8 . C o mm u n i t r e e
Commissioned as part of the Shell Station site plan in 2012, this metal
sculpture represents the progression of Ajax from its industrial roots and rich
natural heritage, to a culturally diverse and healthy community. The tree
represents growth. Faces of various cultural backgrounds and ethnicities grow
from the trunk reflecting our diverse community, while youthful faces predict
a promising future. The windswept limbs symbolize our resilience while the
blossoms signify the prosperity and beauty of our community.
9 . G r o u n d e d C o mm u n i t y
These gentle but solid figures, representing members of the community enjoying
the recreation centre and adjoining park, are made of stainless steel rod mesh.
Their basket-like bodies are filled with a mixture of local field and river stones,
which represent the foundation of our community and remind us that we are
part of the land. On closer examination, there are 42 stones which have words
sandblasted into them, representing emotions, community context, inspirational
words and words of welcome.
10. Boundless Potential
The creativity, ingenuity and spirit of children and youth provide the inspiration
for this impressive glass art piece, representing the boundless potential of
their ideas, energy and aspirations. One side of the image contains cold,
uniform shapes while the other presents a sense of creative excitement. This
movement and flow represents the spirit of youth becoming inspired and freeing
themselves from the limitations of conformity. Boundless Potential is actually a
macro photograph of the artist’s expert manipulation of coloured glass, which is
then pressed between two 8’ panels of glass. This process allows the viewer to
see details in the glass that are not fully visible when seen with the naked eye.

feature was designed to describe Ajax as it exploded into existence out of
