Volterra-Detroit Foundation Raises Funds for Building Renovation
Nearly a year and a half ago, Anthony Rugiero
introduced the Detroit Italian American community to a
great new undertaking launched by University of Detroit
Mercy School of Architecture through its educational
partner, the Volterra-Detroit Foundation.
The goal of the Volterra-Detroit Foundation is to raise
funds for the renovation of a historic building gifted for
the UDM SOA International Study Program by the
community of Volterra, Italy. The purpose of this building
is to provide students the opportunity to study abroad and
learn the language, culture, art and architecture of Italy.
Anthony Rugiero is President of Antonio’s Cucina
Italiana in Dearborn Hts., Farmington Hills and Canton
and Roman Village in Dearborn. On Oct. 16, 2011, Rugiero
brought Il Volo to the Fox Theater in Detroit followed by
the Encore Benefit Dinner held at The Detroit Opera House
to support the Volterra-Detroit Foundation.
Volterra-Detroit Foundation supports The University
of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture along with the
Comune di Volterra. The two have formed a unique
partnership to provide a new educational opportunity in
the City of Volterra, Italy for students in metro-Detroit.
It’s a wonderful opportunity for Detroit and Italy to build
a connection that will benefit students and enhance their
educational opportunities. Unique to this project, U.S.
students will be able to study in Italy for no additional
fee, after paying their regular college tuition.
On Sept. 24, 2012, the contractors in Volterra began
renovations on the building. The commitment of the UDM
School of Architecture Italian study abroad program, its
dedicated professors and many donors who came forward
with individual donations for this project brought over 50%
of all funds needed for the project and were essential in
establishing the Foundation for a bank loan securing the
remaining funds needed to start construction now. Students
will arrive for their first semester of study in May.
On May 15, 2013, a dedication ceremony will take
place for the new Volterra International Residential College
and Rugiero plans to be there to commemorate the
historical event.
Help is still needed for facilitating programs and
paying down the loan on this very worthy project. For

Rugiero says, “I am very proud to participate in
accomplishing the first mission of supporting UDM
School of Architecture in raising funds for this project
and fulfilling the dreams of many students who will now
have the opportunity to study in Italy and receive a global
education. There are big plans for the future of Volterra;
including funding scholarships, building programs for high
school students and inviting donors.”
