A Message from the President
Dear friends,
O
ne hundred years ago next year, Adah Bertha
Coover donated the land where Madison County
Hospital now sits. It’s humbling to think that the
generations before us had the vision to build a foundation of
personal patient care close to home. This community has
been committed to maintaining long and healthy lives, and we
plan to keep that commitment by enhancing the way we
provide your care.

For the past year, our doctors, nurses, staff, volunteers and

Over the next few months, you will begin to see more of these changes - inside and
out. Things may look different, but you can rest assured that your hospital and its
caregivers remain committed to serving you and your family into the future.

“It’s extremely important for patients to
establish a relationship with a primary
care physician if they expect to be
seen quickly when they’re sick,” said
Dr. Khoury. “In order to establish that
relationship we like to see them when
they’re well, too.”
Dr. Khoury recommends adults come in
either annually or biannually depending
on the age and health of the patient.
“The majority of my day is spent talking
to patients about how to stay healthy
and prevent disease,” she said. “Simple
things like checking height, weight,
blood pressure and cholesterol can tell
me quite a bit about a person’s general
well-being.”
Dr. Al-Obosi adds, “I’m looking forward
to treating patients and preventing
diseases. Helping my patients to avoid
getting sick is rewarding.”
Dr. Khoury points out that family
practitioners and pediatricians enjoy
caring for healthy children, and that
children with special needs, chronic
illnesses, prematurity or ADHD are
best cared for by a pediatrician. This
includes someone like Dr. Martha Geib,
a local pediatrician who has been
practicing for more than 15 years in
the London community.

In addition to being a family physician,
Dr. Williams is also a board-certified
geriatrician, which means she spent an
additional year after her family medicine
residency dedicated to geriatrics.
“My love for geriatrics started in my
childhood, as my grandparents have
always been a huge influence on my life,”
she said. “Beyond that, I just really enjoy
my geriatric patients. They always have
great stories to tell. I feel like they teach

“The benefit of family practice is caring
for multiple generations of the same

Campaign offers hope and inspiration to women diagnosed with breast cancer
T
he fight to cure cancer rages on and Madison County
Hospital is working to do our part through the “Cure
Your Fears” campaign.
Eight years ago, after
learning that Madison
County experienced some
of the highest occurrences
of breast cancer cases
and mortality rates in the
state of Ohio, the MCH
Foundation launched a
$2 million breast cancer
initiative. The initiative
was aimed at increasing
education and awareness,
expanding screening, diagnostic and treatment options
and establishing a Breast Cancer Endowment Fund to
provide healthcare services to local uninsured and
underinsured women.
In 2010, a grant from the Columbus Affiliate of Susan G.
Komen for the Cure allowed MCH to begin offering free
Breast Care Clinics and a “Cure Your Fears” awareness
campaign. MCH provides mammograms and clinical
breast exams at no out-of-pocket cost to patients.
The original “Cure Your Fears” campaign, which launched in
May 2010, featured 11 breast cancer survivors from Madison
County. Their faces, stories and encouragement helped deliver
the message of the
importance of early
detection in surviving
breast cancer.
According to the
American Cancer
Society 1 in 8 women
will develop breast
cancer sometime
in their life and
approximately
232,670
women will be newly diagnosed with breast
cancer in 2014 alone. This past spring, MCH
was awarded more than $62,000 from Komen
Columbus to continue the campaign and
spread the word about the importance of
early detection and screening.
One of the women helping to
do just that is Sue McClelland.

was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2012 and
had a mastectomy and reconstruction of her left breast.
After a year of chemotherapy and six months of a
Herceptin regimen, McClelland has been cancer-free
for about one year.
“Get mammograms. Know your body
and be aware of changes,” she said.
“Don’t be afraid. Fear stops us from
doing the things we know we should.
Women take care of everyone else,
but don’t take good enough care of
themselves. Love yourself enough to
take care of yourself.”
Madison County Hospital has teamed up with
one of the nation’s leading cancer care providers,
The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer
Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and
Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC
– James), to provide medical oncology services.
Because of this relationship, patients at MCH will
have access to the latest in medical oncology care,
delivered by a cancer expert from The James, right
here in our community.
Two-time breast cancer survivor Roberta
Byerly knows all too well about the importance
of good medical care. Her first incidence with
breast cancer in 1983 took part of her breast and
20 lymph nodes. A recurrence in 2006 required
more surgeries and eight weeks
of radiation.
“We are so pleased to have the medical oncology
expertise of The James right in our own backyard,”
said Dana Engle, CEO at MCH. “The need for cancer
care services within our community will continue to
grow, and our partnership with The James provides
quality care for our patients.”
“People need to believe in their treatment
protocols and realize that attitude can affect
outcomes,” she said. “When I got cancer for
the second time I knew it wasn’t the end. I
believed that I could survive it again and I did.”
London resident Eileen West attributes her
survival to an annual mammogram. “I never
felt a thing,” said West. “My doctor never felt
a thing. I almost postponed and nearly canceled
my routine mammogram. Things were busy and
life was chaotic. After all, I didn’t have a family
history. Call and make your appointment today.
You can’t be a no-show and win this fight!”
Eileen West
In addition to spreading the word about the importance of screening
and early detection, the Komen Columbus grant money will
allow MCH to continue to combat breast cancer incidence
and mortality rates. Komen Columbus is the only breast
cancer organization in Central and Southeastern
Ohio committed to providing free services for every
step of the breast cancer journey.
Watch for more of the “Cure Your Fears” survivors
this year as our new Komen grant
supports our continuation of this
awareness campaign. To learn more
about breast cancer services at
MCH, please call the Battelle Breast
Care Center at 740-845-7222.
Dr. Shabana Dewani, a board-certified medical
oncologist from The James, is currently caring for
patients at MCH. Dr. Dewani is an expert in the
diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of cancers and
has been with The James since 2013. She is a caring
and compassionate physician dedicated to serving
her patients and helping create a cancer-free world.
Dr. Dewani received her medical degree
from Padmashree Dr. D.Y. Patil Medical
College and completed an internship at
the YMCA Municipal Hospital in Pune,
India. After graduation, she attended
Wright State University and participated
in the Internal Medicine Residency
Programs. In 2010, Dr. Dewani
was one of two candidates
selected to train in Wright State
University’s fully accredited
Hematology/Oncology
Fellowship Program.
