Zidane were double clear and blazing
fast for the win in Saturday night’s
$50,000 Wellington Equestrian Realty
Grand Prix CSI 2*, the highlight event
of week two at the 2014 FTI Consulting
Winter Equestrian Festival (FTI WEF).
Riders representing nine different
countries showed under the lights in the
International Arena at the Palm Beach
International Equestrian Center (PBIEC)
with top finishes for McGuigan, along
with Todd Minikus (USA) and Quality
Girl and Nicholas Dello Joio (USA)
aboard Carlos V.H.P. Z.
Luc Musette of Belgium set the
course for Saturday night’s competition
with 44 entries, nine clear rounds to
advance to the jump-off, and seven
clear rounds over the short course.
The fantastic crowd that braved the
unusually cold Florida weather was
treated to a thrilling show in the jumpoff as the horses and riders raced
against the clock. Fifth to go in the second round,
Ronan McGuigan and Capall Zidane
completed the fastest track in 39.92
seconds, edging out Todd Minikus and
Quality Girl’s time of 40.15 seconds. A
few rounds later, Nicholas Dello Joio
and Carlos V.H.P. Z completed the third
fastest time in 40.33 seconds. It was a
very close race, as Sweden’s Alexander
Zetterman and Cafino finished fourth in
40.50 seconds, and Kaitlin Campbell
(USA) and Rocky W stopped the clock
in 40.52 seconds to place fifth.
Ronan McGuigan already has
an early lead in the $100,000 FTI
Consulting Rider Challenge standings
after a very successful start to the
circuit, and he added a few more points
to that lead with Saturday night’s win.
Capall Zidane, a 10-year-old Dutch
Warmblood gelding by Concorde x
Baloubet du Rouet, has been incredibly
consistent for the rider and continues
to prove himself. Commenting on his jump-off round,
McGuigan noted, “I was usually fighting
most of the year here with Todd, so I
knew I had to try and beat him. The turn
back to the third jump I had to give him
a little bit of time, it was tricky, but after
that everything else you could gallop
up to the jumps. He’s very careful, so
the jump-off course kind of suited me.” McGuigan, originally from Ireland,
came to America 12 years ago and
now has a farm in New Jersey. He is
enjoying the opportunity to jump at a
higher level and acknowledged that
Saturday’s win was the biggest of his
career. “This is the first time I’ve really had a
chance to jump at this level,” McGuigan
detailed. “Mostly I have been training
clients, so I’m just having fun with
him. I’ve got a few new, young horses

Hunter Competition in Full
Swing During FTI WEF 2
The second week of hunter
competition at the FTI WEF saw
unseasonably cold Florida weather, but
exhibitors were happy to brave the cold
to step into the show ring. Riders and
horses alike bundled up ringside before
shedding their layers at the in-gate on
their way to division champion titles.
Professionals kicked off competition
for the week on Wednesday, with the
first division championships being
awarded Thursday afternoon. Sandy
Ferrell and Stephanie Bulger’s Mariano
were one of the first week two division
champions, picking up tri-color honors
in the Shapley’s Grooming Products
Regular Conformation Hunters.
Mariano, a nine-year-old Holsteiner
gelding, won three over fences classes
and the model in addition to placing
second under saddle with Ferrell.
Reserve champions Back Story and
Kelley Farmer were hot on their heels,
finishing second to Mariano and Ferrell
in every class except the under saddle,
which Farmer and Back Story won.
Back Story is owned by Tia Schurect.
The WEF Open Hunter 3’3” division
was the next to hand out division
awards, crowning Cornetto Royal and
Heather Caristo Williams champions
on Thursday morning. Caristo Williams
and the eight-year-old Westphalian
gelding, owned by Mr. & Mrs. Ralph
Sandy Ferrell and Mariano were
the Regular Conformation Hunter
champions, sponsored by Shapley’s

Caristo, were second, third, first, and
third over fences and second in the
under saddle. The reserve champion
for the division was Sugar Ray, owned
by Brigitte Leroux and ridden by
Melissandre Lincourt. Lincourt piloted
Sugar Ray to first, fourth, second, and
third over fences after finishing third
in the under saddle.
Adult amateur competitors went
head to head in the Ariat Low Adult
Hunter Section A, which concluded on
Friday afternoon. Special K and Mary
Katherine Shaughnessy emerged
victorious after finishing second in the
under saddle and first and second
over fences. Special K, a 12-yearold Hanoverian gelding, is owned by
Shaughnessy’s Shamrock Ventures,
LLC. Pearl Street collected the reserve
champion title for the division after
placing third and first over fences
and third under saddle with rider and
owner Jamie Jarvis.
The Ariat Low Adult Hunter Section
B had to be split into two sections.
One champion, Magic Hour, won all
four over fences classes in the division
for the championship with Jennifer
Speisman. They were also second
in the under saddle. Hazelton and
Nadine Greenberg were the other
champions after they were first, third,
and fifth in the over fences and won
the under saddle. Reserve champions
were Jefferson and Michele Jacob and
Cadbury and Ingrid Avera.
The top junior competitors came out
in force for the Platinum Performance
USEF Show Jumping Talent Search on
Friday morning. The blue ribbon went
to Victoria Colvin and Stallone VDL, a
14-year-old Royal Dutch Warmblood
gelding owned by North Star and Dr.
Betsee Parker. The top three were
rounded out by second place finisher
Meredith Darst aboard Sorensen
Stables’ Ceylon and Ali Tristchler with
Helio Rouge, owned by Heather Flynn.
The Coldwell Banker’s Children
Hunter 15-17 division awarded Classic
Row and Amanda Geary with the
division champion prize on Sunday.

US P.R.E. Party at the Adequan
Global Dressage Festival – The
US P.R.E. will host a special evening at
the AGDF on Wednesday, January 22,
featuring a Spanish dinner prepared
by Chef Frederic Boyer, including

Dr. Beverly Gordon in addition to new
product Marvelous Mud Poultice. All
are welcome to learn more about the
variety of therapies available for equine

Rusty McCray, better known as Rusty
the Clown, was a huge hit among the
children in the crowd. He performed trick
riding, roman riding, and fancy shooting,
all with a comedic twist. He was able to
hang completely upside down on the
side of his horse while it galloped around
the ring.
Loop Rawlins turned up the heat with
his lasso and Wild West gun slinging.
He was jumping in and out of his lasso
while continuing to make it smaller. He
proceeded to up the ante by lighting his
lasso on fire and continuing the tricks.
The crowd went wild for the noises that
Loop Rawlins made with his gun slinging
toward the end of the show.
The successful Wild West Show was a
big hit and brought in many local spectators
to experience PBIEC. With such a fantastic
show, many new fans are sure to return to
experience equestrian sport. n

Last Friday night, The Stadium was
packed full of spectators for the Wild West
Show, which was packed with diverse
events to excite and encourage some
family fun.
Being the first complete Wild West
show, it was a huge success. Some of
the performers, such as Guy McLean,
have been to the PBIEC before, but
never had the acts come together in a
presentation like this.
Guy McLean came in with his team
of Australian horses, and his excellent
horsemanship wowed the crowd. His
final trick with his team was to have
three horses standing over one horse
lying down. He furthered the excitement
by standing on the backs of the horses
and cracking his whips in the air. A crowd
favorite, Guy employed his special brand
of humor and equine knowledge to the
delight of the spectators.
Gena Cox and Brandon Perdue
brought some real thrills to the show with
extreme trick riding. Both of them were
able to hang completely horizontal off the
side of the horse and Brandon Perdue
was able to touch the ground and jump
back on the horse all while galloping. It
was later discovered that Gena had done
all of her tricks despite having broken her
leg earlier that month.

The morning’s class saw 49 entries with
11 clear rounds. Wilton Porter and Sleepy
P Ranch LLC’s Radio City completed
the first clear round of the day in 76.25
seconds, sixth in the order of go, and held
onto the lead through most of the class
until Colvin and Don Juan surpassed their
time 40 rounds later. Colvin’s winning time
was well ahead in 71.12 seconds. Kalvin
Dobbs and Treesdale Farms’ Winde, who
won this class last year, placed third in
77.23 seconds.
The series gives young riders under
the age of 25 a valuable stepping stone
from the junior and amateur ranks to the
grand prix level. Colvin only jumped in one
class in the series last year, but started
off strong for this year’s circuit.
“I think it is wonderful,” Colvin said
of the series. “It is great to have all of
the young riders put together in a mini
grand prix and it is sort of a big deal
instead of just having the High Juniors
and Amateurs. It is a bigger grand prix,
but for all of the young riders.”
Porter (19) and Dobbs (18) have each
shown in the series for the last three years
and value the experience that they have
gained.
“I think it pushes consistency because
it is a cumulative score at the end of the
series,” Porter pointed out. “It makes you
want to have a solid round each time
rather than going crazy the first time
and then maybe burning out by the end
of it. I think that is really important for
championships and stuff in the future.”
“It is something nice to work towards,”
Dobbs added. “You have bigger courses;
longer, harder courses than the normal
High Juniors or High Amateurs. It is
nice to have a goal set in mind because
sometimes you are just going. It is nice to
know what you have each week so that
you can learn how to prepare your horse
correctly and be consistent throughout
the circuit.”
Following Sunday’s start to the Artisan
Farms Young Rider Series, the FTI WEF
circuit will host a $10,000 Team Event on
Friday, January 31 at The Stadium during
week 4, a $25,000 Semi-Final on Friday,
March 7, during week 9, and a $50,000
FEI Final on Sunday, March 23, on the
derby field at the Stadium during week
11. Along with competition, there is a
“Bridging the Gap” learning series for
the competitors.

the pressure off him.”
“I’ve had him since he was a fiveyear-old,” he added. “I bought him at
the Hendrix auction, and I actually never
went to try him. I just bought him off a
DVD. When I bought him, all of my Irish
pals called him the ‘internet horse,’ but I
had the last laugh tonight. He has been
very consistent since I’ve had him.” Of course Todd Minikus would have
liked to win on Saturday night, but he was
very happy with his rounds on Quality
Girl and also celebrated McGuigan’s top
finish.
“I’d like to congratulate Ronan; he has
really done a great job with that horse,”
Minikus stated. “I have watched that
horse, his career since Ronan started
with him, and Ronan has done a hell of
a job with him.”
“Going early in the jump-off, I was
mostly worried about Ronan because
last year, during the summer, Ronan really
started clicking with that horse and it is
lightning fast,” Minikus acknowledged.
“Going in early you gotta be a little
conservative and I kind of got stuck in the
corner rolling back to the black vertical.
I did one or two extra strides there that I
didn’t need to, but going early, that’s what
you have to do sometimes. Luck of the
Irish was clearly there tonight.”
Minikus explained that this was Quality
Girl’s first week back to showing after a
well deserved two months off. The mare
won nine grand prix classes in the 2013
season and is back for more.

“She’s right back on track where she
left off,” he affirmed. “I was a little bit
concerned about how she would come
back after that long break because she
has proven that she does well when she’s
in a continuation of showing, but it was
all good. I’m pretty excited for the circuit.”
Nicholas Dello Joio was showing
Carlos V.H.P. Z for his previous owner,
Emilie Martinsen, during last year’s FTI
WEF circuit and is excited to now have
control of the talented gelding’s career
through his new Carlos Group ownership. “We’re really excited to do what we
want with the horse, pick and choose
what’s best for our schedule and what
we want to aim at,” Dello Joio stated.
“We know the kind of quality he has. He
has already previously won a 5* grand
prix back in Europe, so he has quite a
record. He’s an unbelievably careful horse
and when he’s confident, I think there’s
nothing he won’t jump. Tonight he was
super, so I’m really excited.”

watching Saturdaynight’s class and
congratulated the top competitors. “It’s
a great class,” Varney stated. “This is
the third time we’ve done this class and
the third year it hasn’t felt like Florida, so
I’m just happy it turned out and we still
had a great crowd out there and a full
international tent. I really enjoy that. I am
happy with the turnout every year at this
time of year, and we are looking forward to
our other class in a number of weeks.” n

Getting to Know Gustavo Murcia: Official Ringmaster
of the 2014 FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival
You’ve seen him around the show
grounds in the eye-catching red coat, white
breeches, shiny tall boots and gray top hat
that are the staple of the FTI WEF ringmaster,
but have you gotten to know Gustavo
Murcia? With the loss of former ringmaster
Clifford Haines this fall, Murcia had some
big boots to fill, and he has stepped in with
a smile. Murcia, 30, is originally from Bogotá,
Colombia. He lives in Boynton Beach, FL,
with his wife of two-and-a-half years, Tiffany.
The pair just had a baby girl, Gabriella, on
January 1. Murcia is an equestrian, retired
Lieutenant in the Colombian Army, as well
as a practicing equine dentist. Read on to
find out more about the new face in this
year’s FTI WEF winner’s circle.
How did you end up becoming
ringmaster at WEF?
I am a horse dentist, and one day I went
to Pablo Gamboa’s barn because he is my
friend and he is one of my clients. I was
showing his wife, Leanne, some dental
charts and she asked if I was available in
the winter to do the ringmaster job. She
asked if I remembered Cliff, who used to
be the ringmaster. I did not have any idea
what a ringmaster was or what he did,
but she explained it to me. I said, ‘Let me
talk to my boss (that’s my wife), and we’ll

see.’ I thought it was a really good idea. I
did some research and I asked different
people and looked on the internet. I read
about Cliff, and I knew that you needed
somebody with special skills for this
job. You need somebody who is a nice
person, charming, happy all of the time. I
said I would try it and see what happens!
When did you become a dentist?
In Colombia I went to the Army for six
and a half years. I am a retired Lieutenant.
I spent the last two years at the military
equestrian school. That is the reason I
got involved again with horses. I came to
America and started a new life here, but I
have always wanted to work with horses.
I had other notions to work at different
things, but no. I went to the American
School of Equine Dentistry in Colorado.
The main school is in Virginia, and they
run the courses in different places.
What did you do at the military
school in Colombia?
Showing. We had competitions.
Dressage, jumpers and eventing. I
did all of them. They have different
levels for each discipline, and before
you go to the school, you have to
take a course and get a certificate as

an instructor so that you can teach.
Working as ringmaster, are you
still doing dental work throughout
the winter as well?
I work seven days a week. I do this
Wednesday through Sunday, but I have
horses to do on Monday and Tuesday.
That is the only way that I can keep my
business going. That is my main business,
but at the same time I really like doing
this. They are two different things, but
with horses I don’t care. The horses
are the main thing. The people around
here are nice and and the crew are very
helpful, so I enjoy it.
What do you do when you have
free time?
I used to practice MMA (mixed martial
arts), but the truth is, I don’t have time
now. I like to watch UFC or boxing. Now I
just spend time with my baby and my wife,
and my mom is here. The few moments
that I have without doing anything I just
spend time with them.
What’s your favorite food?
I really like fish. I don’t eat red meat
or pork. Anything with vegetables. I try
to cook, but its not my best thing to do.

Do you have any pets?
We have four dogs, one cat and one
horse. One Pomeranian, Ginger. Two
Yorkies, Mocha and Bella, and a Great
Dane mix. She’s a rescue, Luna. That’s
my favorite; that’s my girl. Then we have
Kingston, the king of the house, the cat.
We also have (our horse) Kickboxer.
He’s a Kung Fu son, by Pablo Gamboa’s
stallion. He lives in Loxahatchee. That is
the other thing that I used to do for work.
I used to ride horses for people, horses
with problems or green horses. Now, if I
have time to do something, I just ride my
horse. I really like it. n
