A wonderful family day at
UNIVERSAL
My day at Universal Studios
with Candlelighters was really
fun and I was able to go on all
the rides I really wanted to. When
us kids or parents think about
going to Orlando it is usually for
treatment and we automatically
think about going to the hospital
or going to get a needle stuck in
us. So it was really nice to go to
Universal Studios in Orlando
for a good reason and to have
fun. It was nice seeing the entire
Candlelighters family, the staff
and how much they care about
you and your family, and want to
help you as much as possible. It
was so nice to have a fun normal
day out, and getting to go to a
theme park is pretty rare when
you’re in treatment so thank you
to everyone who helped my family
and all the other families just
enjoy a fun day away from hospital
stays and treatment days. It was so
much fun being on a fun roller
coaster, and drinking butter beer. I
hope we can all get together again
like this with our families, and
have fun. Thanks Candlelighters
for making sure we still get to
enjoy life outside of treatment.
Many Thanks,
Julie

Paige Hobbs
JULY, 16, 2000 – AUGUST 16, 2014
Paige the beloved child of Mark and Leslie
Hobbs. She charmed many with her fabulous
sense of humor and spirited attitude! Her
passion for riding horses and shopping kept
her busy with her mom, grandmother and
friends. Paige battled her cancer with grace
and courage never feeling sorry for herself.
She has inspired many and will be missed
terribly. Paige’s family is forever grateful for
the love and care of the Candlelighters family
as well as so many who have prayed for us. Sydney Brooke Ramirez
JANUARY 24, 1995 – SEPTEMBER 3, 2014
Sydney stepped into eternity on Wednesday, September 3,
2014. In her short 19 years with us, the love of God radiated
from her. You saw it in her big, bright smile, in the hope and
strong faith she carried in her heart, and in the deep love she
had for her precious daughter, Mia Grace, her parents (Randy
& Donna), her sister Kelsey & brother Corey.
She courageously battled cancer two long years, and her
testimony of faith, love and hope resonated in the hearts of
so many. When Sydney encountered the Love of God and the
forgiveness of a Savior, her life was forever changed. Her heart’s
desire was to see others have the same, life-changing encounter
she did. It is best described by her family....“We have been so
blessed that God allowed us to have Sydney for an amazing
and wonderful 19 years. Her life would not be what it is today
if she had not walked through this journey. We put our faith
and trust in God, knowing that His will for our lives is always
perfect. We do not always understand, but His ways are higher
than our ways. We are grieving and at the same time our hearts
are jumping for joy knowing that she is finally home and made
whole again.”

After three and a half long years, our
families’ journey through Leukemia is
finally done. Finnian was diagnosed with
leukemia-ALL on Halloween day 2010.
The day that started with a trip to urgent
care for what I thought was Mono ended
in a life flight to a children’s hospital. All
parents of kids fighting cancer know that
feeling. We all relate to each other because
we’ve had that moment that literally
takes our breath away, hearing our child’s
diagnosis for the first time. I doubt the
memory of that feeling will ever really
go away for anyone in our family. We’ve
learned as all families do, to use that
feeling. That feeling gave us the energy for
the journey ahead.
In these years of fighting for our son’s
life I’ve learned that there are no winners
with cancer. We all make it from point A
to point B in our own way. It’s not a race, if
NOV 2014
it was, everyone would get to
finish. I recently signed up for my
first marathon in years. I’m slow;
I know I’ll be near the back of the
pack. That’s ok, I’m just happy to
be able to participate these days.
In my marathon there’s a wonderful
guy that is the last runner. He
chooses to be the last every single
year. He wants to help make sure
every runner has the chance to
finish safely.
Candlelighters has been that to us,
just like that last runner. So many in
the Candlelighters family have made
this journey through cancer before.
They are wise enough to know
that we will all struggle. We will
all want to give up, but we can’t.
These are our children that have
cancer, we’d never quit on them. We
just need someone there cheering
us along, giving us help as we go. Some
of us will have children that can’t finish,
the Candlelighters family is still there, no
matter how impossible life seems. For those
of us that make it to the end of treatment,
with our hearts invariably broken from
all the pain we’ve seen our kids endure,
Candlelighters reminds us that we are
lifetime members of the childhood cancer
family. It’s up to us to us, as parents who
know that particular headache, to help as
many people finish this journey as we can.
More months than I care to remember,
I’ve needed that gas money, unexpected
car repair, utility assistance or prescription
assistance. I’m grateful for the unwavering
support of Candlelighters, always there
making sure we all have support we need to
get through this journey.
Forever grateful,
The Gerts family

This event always seems to bring such beautiful loving people together
and makes for a great family day. We all need to remember not what it
cost to participate, but the intent of our gifts and the blessings we share.
In a moment, we will be passing out butterflies. During the releasing of
the butterflies we are going to read the names of the Candlelighter Angels
that have passed on and we invite you to remember any family member
or friend that has faced these same challenges. The butterflies represent
the transition from one life into another.
All of you have helped to make the Candlelighters what they
are today. Thanks for helping to share the light.
Thank you all for helping us support the Candlelighters in their
mission to provide financial and emotional assistance to our Brevard
county families whose child has been diagnosed with cancer. When
we were told our daughter Crystal had cancer, we felt like our world
came crashing down. We were so thankful there was the Candlelighter
organization to help us during the 3 ½ years Crystal was in treatment.
Having them by our side the entire time was an unexpected blessing in
so many ways.
This is the 12th anniversary of this Candlelighter fundraiser that we
started to honor the memory of our daughter Crystal.
We want to honor every child & family that is forced to face cancer.
These families find tremendous strength and courage in their lives in
order to face this threat from within. The difficult choices, the pain of
loss, change their lives forever.

2014
My husband, Lillyana and I had a great time at the picnic. We were overjoyed with the
support and how much of a warm welcome we received from Candlelighters and all the
families! Our daughter Lillyana 20 months old was diagnosed Feb 25, 2014 with Acute
Lymphocytic Leukmia. With it being so new to us we were put at ease with the great
support from the other families we are meeting along this journey. And for the kids to be
able to be kids at this picnic put a smile on all of our faces!
Lilly had a great time at the picnic as well. It was her first real outing since her diagnoses.
She seemed to have had a ball with all the activities provided for all the children. My
husband Steve and I wanted to give a big thanks to this wonderful organization.
Sending our love,
Danielle

NOV 2014
IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Paul Phelps
Regretfully we announce the passing of our dear Paul
Phelps. For 20 years he served as President of the Board
of Directors for Candlelighters of Brevard. His dedication and commitment to the organization
went above and beyond what was ever expected of him.
He signed on with enthusiasm and passion– and never
once hesitated to do what needed to be done. No one is
more cherished in this world than someone who lightens
the burden of another by giving their time and love.
The love and compassion he had for our kids and their
family will remain in our hearts forever! He will forever will be missed!
CANDLELIGHTERS OF BREVARD
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Announces Retirement
Carrie Wam, Executive Director of
Candlelighters of Brevard, announced her
retirement after 23 years of service to the
organization. Since joining Candlelighters
in 1991, Carrie has been instrumental
to the growth of the organization. Her
passion for childhood cancer stemmed
when her daughter was diagnosed with
a Wilm’s Tumor. Through her daughter’s
own survivor story, Carrie has been an
instrument of hope to other families
facing the devastating diagnosis. “We
are extremely grateful for Carrie’s
leadership over the last 23 years. Her
passion for the children and dedication
to the Candlelighters’ mission has been
inspirational to us all,” states Candlelighters
of Brevard’s Board President, Brendan
McCarthy. Wam’s passion will be missed by
the organization but her years of dedicated
service are deeply appreciated.
Since Wam’s retirement announcement,
new organizational roles have been
developed and assigned. Candlelighters
of Brevard’s board is pleased to announce
the internal promotion of Natasha Duran
to serve as Executive Director. Duran has
served as Director of Development
for Candlelighters and has demonstrated
NOV 2014
exceptional leadership and provided
strong growth development strategies.
Prior to joining Candlelighters, Natasha
specialized in corporate strategy and
development for Harris Corporation
in the areas of University Relations,
Corporate Relations and the Harris
Foundation. Natasha has a passion for
community relations - and is deeply
inspired by the children and families
of Candlelighters of Brevard.
The new position of Office
Administrator was created to meet
the administrative demands of
the organization. The staff and
board welcomed Vanessa Steele to
Candlelighters. Vanessa’s strong skill
sets, along with commitment to service,
makes her a dynamic addition to the team.
The board is appreciative of the
continued leadership and support
provided by Adis Perez. Adis has been a
“Candlelighter mom” 22 years since her
son was diagnosed with Wilm’s Tumor
at the age of 2. In appreciation and
gratitude for all the support she received
from Candlelighters of Brevard, she
became Director of Family Services
in 2005. Using the positive outcome of
her son’s experience, she welcomes new
families with compassion, hope, and
understanding of their difficult situation.
Congratulations and best wishes are in
order for Carrie Wam on her retirement.
The organization remains focused on its
core mission of providing emotional support
and financial assistance to children diagnosed
with cancer and their families.
