Grading Paper Money
Grading currency is an art and not a science. There is no one industry standard that is universally accepted by all
dealers, collectors or grading services. At Executive Currency we make every attempt to grade accurately and
conservatively. We have adopted the following descriptions for each grade that we feel parallels that used by the majority
of professional currency dealers and some of the well established grading services:
Superb Gem CU or Superb Gem Crisp Uncirculated - A virtually perfect specimen. Near perfect margins, bright
paper, vibrant inks, and fully embossed surfaces. May have one or two very minor handling marks and/or a tiny corner
crinkle. One might expect this note to be graded 67 or above by PCGS and PMG.
Gem CU or Gem Crisp Uncirculated - An almost but not quite perfect note. Above average but not perfect margins, with
no aging or fading of papers, bright inks. Same flaws acceptable as Superb Gem CU. May or may not have fully
embossed surfaces. One might expect a Grade of 65 or 66 by PCGS and PMG.
Choice CU or Choice Crisp Uncirculated - A very nice new note, but margins may be uneven or a bit skewed. Paper
may show light aging, with some handling marks evident. Might be graded 63 or 64.
CU, Unc. or Crisp Uncirculated - A new note with some minor flaws. The note may have some aging, pinholes, margins
may be shifted, handling marks will be evident, with one or two corner tip folds. 60 to 62.
AU or Almost Uncirculated - A note similar to a “CU” or “Unc.” note above, but will have a centerfold and/or another light
fold, corner fold, or bend in another area. May be graded 50 to 58.
XF or Extra Fine - A lightly circulated note that may have three folds, and may have handling marks and other minor
distractions. Still relatively crisp and clean. Reasonable to expect a possible grade of 40 - 45.
VF or Very Fine - A well circulated note with multiple folds, duller paper and coloration, with little crispness. 20 – 35.
F or Fine - A note lacking in crispness and coloration. Fairly heavy circulation with edge problems extant. 12 - 15.
VG or Very Good – Heavily circulated note with multiple problems. One could expect a graded of 8 – 10.
Good – Very heavily circulated with pieces missing, heavy paper splits, poor coloration. Grade may be 4 – 6.
Fair – Pieces missing, holes, stains, tears and splits evident. A reasonable grade would be 2.

MEET THE EXECUTIVE CURRENCY TEAM
Frederick J. Bart is the author of United States Paper Money Errors, currently in its 3rd edition. He has
appeared on CNN, NBC and been quoted in USA Today. His personal paper money collections include:
serial number one national banknotes by State, large and small size serial number one by type, and $100
large size type notes.
Fred and Doris can be reached at 1-586-979-3400 or at
[email protected]. Frederick J. Bart joined the American Numismatic Association in 1973,
foreshadowing a lifelong involvement in coins and currency. By the late-1970s he was advertising
sporadically in Coin World and, in 1981, issued his first price list featuring paper money. Despite early
numismatic entrepreneurship, Bart pursued a traditional career route as a trauma surgeon and performed
reconstructive surgery for more than a decade before returning to his first love. BART, Inc (the parent
corporation of Executive Currency) was founded in 1997. During the past 16 years, Frederick J. Bart has
handled nearly every major US paper money rarity, including the $1000 1890 Treasury Note or "Grand Watermelon", the first piece to sell
for more than one million dollars at public auction. Bart was selected for membership in the prestigious Professional Numismatist Guild,
an honor bestowed upon very few currency dealers since the PNG's inception sixty years ago.
Doris A. Bart experienced a random encounter with an error note in the mid-1980s. This exposure served as the
catalyst to alter her life course from surgical "scrub" nurse to numismatist. She is the co-author of chapters on
paper money errors which appear in major guidebooks such as Paper Money of the United States (Friedberg),
Standard Catalog of United States Paper Money (Cuhaj), and others. Doris A. Bart is president of BART, Inc
overseeing the daily operations of the firm and its small staff, including its online auctions and website sales. She
attends every major paper money convention, where she regularly provides auction representation for her clients.
Her ability to guide clients to a fair market value, establish a sensible bidding cap, and seamlessly execute bids for
several clients in the same sale is respected industry-wide. Her personal paper money collections include:
arguably the finest assemblage of error notes on the $2 denomination and recent increasing attention on large size
type notes of the same denomination. Email Doris at [email protected] or call 1-586-979-3400.
Over the past two decades Mike Abramson has had articles published in Coin World and Paper Money
magazine, and is widely considered the nation's largest currency dealer concentrating on special serial
numbered banknotes. He considers it a real honor to have been the primary dealer for constructing all four of
the largest collections of these notes since the A. A. Grinnell sales of the 1940s: The massive VA radar/repeater
collection, the landmark John Whitney Walter Collection, the James W. "Billy" Key Collection and the Mel
Wilmore collection. Mike sold the VA radar /repeater collection in 1999 in his 168 page fixed price catalog and
wrote the auction catalogs for the Key and Wilmore sales through Lyn Knight Currency Auctions in 2012 and
2014. Fred, Doris and Mike are all members of the Professional Curency Dealers Association and a large
number of other numismatic organizations. Mike can be reached by calling 1-218-310-0090 or e-mailing
[email protected].
Bianca B. Bart was born into a home where numismatics often provided a topic for dinner-table discussions; as
such, her interest in the industry was nearly predictable. In addition to seeking mentors within the field, she
enjoyed an internship opportunity at a top tier third-party grading firm, training under experts in the field.
Immediately after obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree from Michigan State University, she began full time employment
at Executive Currency. During her time at MSU, Bianca played on the women’s ice hockey team, and continues to
play competitive ice hockey on a nationally-ranked women’s team. She enjoys spending time outdoors with her
two adopted Pit Bull Terriers—Skylar and Deke. Bianca aims to share her passion with other collectors by
tailoring selections to enhance their holdings. Contact her at [email protected].
Stephanie Graydon joined Executive Currency, as Manager of the Detroit office, more than three years ago. A 2002
graduate of Grand Valley State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Stephanie is also a Certified
Medical Technician. She is an avid softball player, competing throughout the Midwest.
Together our employees have more than 130 years of experience in the currency industry. We are looking forward
to serving all of your paper money needs.

ULTRA RARE NINE DIGIT SERIAL NUMBER LARGE SIZE NOTE
We have studied the subject of 9-digit serial #100,000,000 notes for many years. Collectors and Dealers view Martin Gengerke's work
in recording serial numbers for large size type notes as the gold standard. My latest research relying on auction records and Martin's
work tells me that only 22 notes with serial number 100,000,000 have publically surfaced over since 1946. Nine of these notes have sold
for between $22,000 and $35,000 from 2004 - 2014. Almost 10 years ago, In June 2005 Stack's auctioned off six of these rarities, some
uncirculated and some not, with four of them bringing over $23,000 per note. Our price, almost a decade later of $30,000 seems to be
quite reasonable considering the incredible state of preservation. The front is centered like a 66PPQ with the back having slightly low
centering. The note is fully original with wonderful embossing and remarkably fresh ink. This piece is destined to be the cenerpiece of
the most sophisticated collection. Just how scarce are serial #100,000,000 notes? Of the billions of large size notes printed by the
Bureau of Engraving & Printing, via Martin’s work, we know of 143,070 notes that have survived, of those, this is the s/n 100,000,000 list:

Page 18
EDUCATIONAL SET: $1, $2, and $5
76. Fr. 224, Fr. 248, and Fr. 269 $1, $2, and $5 1896 This set reposed with successive generations of a Colorado family for more
than a century. The three notes were displayed in double-sided glass, affixed by a short strip of tape at the right and left ends. The
family members peeled the tape and submitted the notes for grading. Absolutely no “work” has been done and it seems extremely
probable that the trace of residue could be removed effortlessly and the notes resubmitted. The net statement reflects perceived
value. With minimal investment this set could be improved and resubmitted—or enjoyed entirely in their present state.
All three specimens exhibit exceptional colors, deep embossing, razor sharp corners, and above average centering—combining for a
“fresh from the press” appearance. PMG comments “thinned, repaired” on the $1 and $2 and “thinning” on the $5. The “thinning” appears
to be very short strips of residue from the previous tape. There is neither history nor suggestion of repair. Reflecting the quality of the
trio, PMG has placed the $5 at Choice Unc 64 and this D position note could just have easily graded full Gem Uncirculated; the $1, which
carries boardwalk margins, and the $2 garnered grades of Choice About Unc 58, although nary a whisper of handling is visible through
the holders. Acquire this most famous set in one fell swoop at a price nearly as attractive as the notes themselves. $17,950

FEDERAL RESERVE BANK NOTES -- LARGE SIZE
The Greatest Cut Sheet in American Numismatics
99. SERIAL NUMBERS 1-2-3-4...$5 1918 Federal Reserve Bank Notes...further identified as Fr. 782...an item of epic proportions,
missing from even the greatest collections, including both public and private museums...the likes of which have never graced the halls of
the Smithsonian Institution or the American Numismatic Association, either on temporary loan nor permanent display.
There are three serial number one $5 Federal Reserve Bank Notes (FRBN) recorded. The D1A, from Cleveland, is no longer
accompanied by it's sheet-mates. The F1A, from Atlanta, remains part of an uncut sheet. The F1A uncut sheet is presently for sale at
$450,000. (It would be our pleasure to broker the sale of this item.) We believe that the uncut sheet of $5 F1A, F2A, F3A, and F4A uncut
sheet is fairly priced; only a tremendous purchase on the B1A, B2A, B3A, and B4A cut sheet, offered herein, allows us to present it at
such a favorable price.
During their two prior auction appearances, dating back decades, each of these four notes was graded Gem CU. PCGS took a very
conservative approach in assigning:
B1A--the first and most important note printed-- Choice About New 55 PPQ
B2A--serial number matches district number--Choice About New 58 PPQ
B3A--every bit the equal of the Gem New--Choice New 63 PPQ
B4A--few certified gems exist--Gem New 65 PPQ
Each received the coveted PPQ (Premium Paper Quality) accolade attesting to complete paper originality with deep embossing.
Our firm sells collectibles, without the mention of 'investment'--which, as advertisements remind "past performance is not a predictor of
future growth". Yet, perhaps once a decade, an item comes along whose future appears so stellar that contemplating long term potential
seems reasonable. This is one such item.

NATIONAL BANK NOTES – LARGE SIZE
119. $5 1902-ND, FNB FAIRBANKS, Ch-7718, Alaska National Banknote, as a District. A rarity of the utmost caliber only the first Blue
Seal to grace our offerings since 1981, in contrast to several Red Seals. Bold pen signatures of Geo Hutchinson and E. Stroeker.
In 1867, William Seward, Secretary of State, argued vigorously for the purchase of Alaska, from Russia, at the perceived
exorbitant price of two cents per acre or $7.2 Million. Americans quickly nicknamed the barren acquisition “Seward’s Folly”. Thirty years
later, Seward was forgiven with the discovery of gold leading to the Klondike Gold Rush. As the importance and value of the land
increased, so did tensions with neighboring Canada as pre-existing borders between Russia and Canada were unclear in several large
sections. Rather than risk war, Charles Fairbanks, a Senator from Indiana, was appointed to resolve the border dispute in an amicable
fashion—a feat he accomplished in 1898 with the majority of the disputed land becoming property of the United States.
Between 1890 and 1900 the population of Alaska doubled to 64,000 because of the gold rush. The second largest city was
settled in 1901 and named Fairbanks to honor the Senator’s contribution to the District of Alaska. Four years later the First National Bank
of Fairbanks was organized.
Aside from great numismatic importance, this fiscal relic has direct ties
Klondike Gold Rush, the unique status of Alaska as a District and as a Territory, William Seward, and Charles Fairbanks. Only fourteen
examples available to collectors and many tightly held. PMG Fine 12. $27,450

own Friedberg number. I have drooled over this note since the early-1980s when I saw it in Tom Denly’s case at a Memphis show.
Although rumors of three exist, there is no documentation to support that claim. This is UNIQUE. It is ex-Harry Bass collection. Although
it appears in the census as AU, I believe that PCGS is spot on with the comment “small rust stain at top left of center” and grade. If you
are waiting for another to appear you might wait 30 years before you see this one again, as I did. He who hesitates is lost. Irreplaceable,

1968 DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION TICKETS
The 1968 Democratic National Convention
occurred in a year marred with unrelenting violence
that carried over to the event. Civil unrest and riots,
exploded in 100 cities after the assassination of Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. on April 4th. Likewise, the
convention followed the assassination of Robert F.
Kennedy on June 5th. The Senator from New York
and brother of slain president John F Kennedy, was
the likely for nomination by the Democrats, as
Lyndon B. Johnson declined seeking reelection.
The convention became infamous because of
force used by Chicago Police, not only amid
skirmishes with Yippie activists and protestors
but against journalists including Mike Wallace and
Dan Rather. Quite a conversation piece!
Here is an opportunity to acquire a complete set of authentic Honored Guest passes (with the stub still attached) from this tumultuous
event. Each set includes a color-coded admission ticket for each of the four days. Only nine sets of these historic relics available.

“PATTERN” for U.S. PAPER MONEY
The U.S. switched from large to small currency in 1928 as a cost-saving measure. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing instructed the
ABNCo to create a pattern for the redesign with the front in black and the back in green ink—like the adopted color scheme. These
SPEIMENS were printed on intaglio presses. Of especial importance is the watermark as an anti-counterfeiting measure…a device the
BEP would finally adopt seven decades later. These SPECIMEN notes are simply denominated “10” and bear the series of 1929, with
central image of Columbia. Currency patterns—like those for coinage—rank among the rarest, most elusive, and historically important
fiscal relics within numismatics. Typically, such pieces command thousands of dollars. We recently acquired a handful and take pride
offering them to the collecting community. Each is authenticated, certified, and graded by PCGS.

INTAGLIO IMPRESSIONS of ADOPTED or PROPOSED DESIGNS
PROOFS and INTAGLIO IMPRESSIONS are among the most highly coveted items in paper money—unlike in United States coinage,
where proof strikings have been available annually, to the public, for nearly 150 years, paper money collectors have never enjoyed the
same opportunity; even the most common, the most basic of proofs command prices beginning at $5,000, with several approaching
$100,000 at public auction. As a general point of distinction: proofs are produced on an intaglio press before a design is released, without
restriction on the quantity; while intaglio impressions are produced from the same plates and inks on the same presses after release in a
limited number. Both are official products of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing; neither is negotiable. Many proofs are imprinted on
thin paper affixed to cardstock, while intaglio impressions are imprinted directly into cardstock. Both offer a wonderful execution of the
engraver’s design with each artistic detail flawlessly rendered and crisply impressed. Both proofs and intaglio impressions are printed
on one side only (uniface) without identifying serial numbers. Intaglio impressions offer a valuable addition to any collection or a worthy
(and affordable) gift to a collector at any level. Never before, in the 33 year history of our firm, have we hand the privilege of bringing
such important pieces to market. The INTAGLIO IMPRESSIONS offered here have been independently authenticated and graded by
PCGS Currency as Superb Gem New 67PPQ. Please see next page for pricing.

ANDREA DORIA—Authentic Salvaged Banknotes
Page 54
Page 54
The S. S. Andrea Doria was as much a floating art gallery as a luxury cruise vessel. Between her maiden voyage in 1953 and the
maritime disaster ending her service along with the lives of more than fifty on board, she ferried thousands of people between Europe
and New York. Due to her enormous size and the warm south Atlantic course she took, there were three swimming pools on the upper
deck; an engineering marvel not previously accomplished. On July 26, 1956 the Andrea Doria and the Stockholm (a Swedish ocean liner)
collided amid dense fog off the coast of Nantucket. On August 27, 1981, a team lead by marine explorer and department store heir,
Peter Gimble, recovered the Banco di Roma safe which had been submerged more than 250 feet underwater for more than one-quarter
century. Three years later, the safe was opened during a live television broadcast revealing stacks of U.S. $1 silver certificates and
Italian banknotes in 50, 100, and 1,000 Lire denominations.
After a meticulous inventory to document the origin of each piece, some of the notes were preserved and protected in specially-made
Lucite holders. These holders were sealed by PCGS along with a certificate of authenticity. It is a thrill to offer such historically important
relics from this famous maritime disaster to our clients. Each pair includes a $1 silver certificate and an Italian 1,000 Lire salvaged from
the Andrea Doria mounted in custom acrylic ready to display. An irreplaceable opportunity for the connoisseur.
349. One pair: $1 Silver Certificate and 1,000 Lire, each PCGS certified……………………$1,495
350. Two pairs, as above, four banknotes include two $1 silvers and two 1,000 Lire………$2,795

UNIQUE LARGE SIZE ERROR
373. $10 1862 USN, Fr. 94, Missing Face Printing. This may be the earliest mistake produced by the US government. Striking misprint;
despite a fully executed back and green underprint and geometric lathe counter “10” on front, the rest of the design is absent—a faux
pas visible across the room. This quickened the pulse of the entire bourse floor when first discovered by Dennis Forgue at a Chicago
show many years ago. Comments “edge damage” from being shown around because of it’s confusing nature in a climate unaware of
printing errors. In a market where the most routine of double denominations realize $30k, this utterly unique specimen seems value
priced, PCGS Fine 15. $19,950
DEFECTIVE PAPER STOCK

What's rarer than serial #99999999? Nine digit serial number 100,000,000
We have studied the subject of 9-digit serial #100,000,000 notes for many years. Collectors and Dealers view Martin Gengerke's
work in recording serial numbers for large size type notes is known as the gold standard. My latest research relying on auction records and Martin's
work tells me that only 22 notes with serial number 100,000,000 have publically surfaced over since 1946. Nine of these notes have sold for between
$22,000 and $35,000 from 2004 - 2014. Almost 10 years ago, In June 2005 Stack's auctioned off six of these rarities, some uncirculated and some not,
with four of them bringing over $23,000 per note. Our price, almost a decade later of $30,000 seems to be quite reasonable considering the incredible
state of preservation. The front is centered like a 66PPQ with the back having slightly low centering. The note is fully original with wonderful
embossing and remarkably fresh ink. This piece is destined to be the cenerpiece of the most sophisticated collection.

This complete 90 note set of $1 Federal Reserve Notes is exceptionally difficult to
complete for two reasons: 1) Since the end of the 1977 series, The Bureau of
Engraving and Printing has been removing $1 FRNs with serial #20000002 each
time it is printed for quality control checks, and replacing it with a random serial
number star note and 2) The BEP stopped printing $1 FRNs above serial #96000000
with the 1977 series. We know of only five complete $1 FRN 01111110 – 98888889
in private hands. This fantastic set is enhanced by the fact that all ninety notes are
Choice to Gem Uncirculated. With individual super radars selling for $100 to $1000
(for the 20000002), we feel this set is attractively priced at $11,000.

This wonderful set is complete except for the 96969696 which should eventually
show up with one of the dealer specialists in this area. We would be pleased to
help the new owner find this missing serial number over time. Three serial numbers
in this set are quite rare: The 96969696. 97979797 and 98989898 as the BEP stopped
printing $1 FRNs with serial numbers above 96000000 with the 1981 series. We
have highlighted some nuances of this set in red, where the serial numbers match
the district letter, where you have matched block letters or where the serial number
matches the series date. All notes are Choice to Gem Uncirculated. With individual

Unless agreed to by Executive Currency, payment is due within 10 days of receipt of your order. A finance charge
of 1% per month on all unpaid balances will apply, unless special terms listed below have been extended.
SPECIAL TERMS: For larger orders requiring a bit more time to pay, we will try to extend terms to fit both
your budget and the time frame you desire. For example we recently sold a set of banknotes costing $10,000 to a
client with twelve monthly payments of $833/month, with no finance charges. Not everyone will qualify, but please
do contact us for details at [email protected] or 1-218-310-0090.

with the return policy of all major currency auction houses. If you have a concern about a particular note, please

Dear Collector, Heir, or Executor:
If paper money no longer holds the fascination that it once did and you are considering selling—or if you are charged with
selling a collection on behalf of someone else—permit us to place your material into the hands of a new generation of
enthusiastic collectors. We understand that decisions are not made lightly. Hence we will discuss the route that best suits
your circumstances and maximizes your financial return.
Please realize that in addition to United States paper money, our firm also handles all United States coinage form 1794present. Outside consultants are utilized for areas such as historical autographs, fine art, stamps, and numismatics from other
countries allowing us to handle nearly every estate.
Some of the venues that we offer:
Outright purchase: our firms has spent $1,000,000s on individual collections. Immediate funds are available. Many poorly
capitalized dealers for clients to wait for payment until after they’ve sold an item. Our firm pays promptly via bank wire or
certified funds—whichever you prefer.
Private treaty: our firm has brokered single collections up to $3,000,000 at one time.
Arrange auction consignment: our firm has handled more than $40,000,000 in auction consignments on behalf of our
clients. This includes single sales between $3,650,000 and $9,200,000—plus countless collections in the $100,000 to
$1,000,000 range. There are more factors to consider when negotiating auction terms than most people can imagine. To the
inexperienced, the process can be extremely intimidating and less rewarding than when negotiated by experts. In fact, if we
can’t deliver a better overall package than the auction company offers, our services are free.
When the time comes to discuss distributing your holdings, we welcome the privilege of assisting you. Please contact
Frederick Bart at 586.979.3400 or [email protected] for a confidential analysis.
