proudly serving double bassists on the web since 1997
F
or over 15 years, we've proudly offered a varied
line of Pickups and Microphones, Preamps, and
Amplifiers for Double Bass at very good prices.
Over the years, we've added Upright and Electric
Upright Basses, Parts, Strings, Cases and Stands,
Bows, and many other useful, quality products for bass players.
You benefit from shopping with us because our experience and
focus means that you get real answers to your questions, from
bassists! You can see that our product descriptions are in-depth
and detailed, because they are most often based on our own
use of the gear, rather than the generic "manufacturer blurbs"
you'll find on most other websites. We only carry gear that we
would (and often DO) confidently use ourselves: anything we
consider selling has to pass the "Bob & Mark Test" -- or you
won't see it here.
Our secure website is available 24 hours a day for your ordering
ease. And we're committed to keeping products in stock; we
ship most orders within 24 hours of being placed (excepting
weekends and holidays, of course), and provide you with
tracking and post-purchase support. And our many "extras" like installation guides, product-specific tips, and even cool
BASS stickers for your car - are included at no charge!
AND WE’RE MORE THAN JUST A STORE.
The Gollihur Music crew is happy to offer lots of useful, free
resources on our website at help.gollihurmusic.com!

PICKUPS FOR UPRIGHT BASS
Pickups and amplification could be considered the "heart" of
our business... it's how we got our start over 15 years ago!
While most pickups are designed with the intent of sounding
like "your bass, only louder," we all know that their success can
be hit or miss. And "where it is" on the bass is every bit as
important as "who made it." We've used most every pickup we
sell, usually on a selection of basses. We describe each pickup in
real words, and invite you to email or call us with specific
questions... we can answer them. We even include our own
helpful hints and installation tips with every pickup we sell -from getting the best sound, to avoiding feedback, and more.

Bass Max - $101.50
Double Big Twin - $107.80
Bass Master Pro - $292.60
The Bass Max is a compact unit designed to be wedged into the
wing in the side of your bridge. It has two
piezo elements in this single rubber jacket,
sandwiched top and bottom, with material in
between, so it senses the activity from both
the top and bottom of the bridge. It is our
most popular pickup, and rightfully so. It sounds great, with a
full-range response and is especially good for situations where
you'd need to easily remove the pickup (a 15 second job). For
the many different styles I play, I have come to enjoy the Bass
Max's versatile character and ease of getting a good sound that
“cuts through” a dense band mix.
The Double Big Twin can be a great choice for
string detail oriented pizz play. There is an
individual transducer for each string, and their
close location to the string/bridge contact point
means a heavy string emphasis (with less "wood") in the sound.
Installation is easy using a thin adhesive film, and a buffering
preamp is strongly recommended with this
pickup. I particularly like combining the
different flavors of the Double Big Twin and
Bass Max, as part of the K&K Bass Master Pro
System, since blending the two pickups allows
you to increase or decrease string emphasis and “punch.”
Realist “Copperhead” or “Woodtone” - $219.99
LifeLine - $229.99 • SoundClip - $399.99
The David Gage Realist Pickup has long been a popular choice
among bassists looking for a natural sound.
Available in two versions – one with the
pickup encased in copper foil, one in a thin
wooden veneer – its character is very natural
and woody, with less focus and more body,
due to its location against the body of the
instrument. The Realist is an excellent choice for bowed
response - as well as for the classic pizzicato sound.
The newer LifeLine Pickup builds upon the original’s success. It
uses a simple, but clever design; the element of the pickup
wedges between the adjuster and wood of your adjustable bass
bridge. So, it does NOT require you to swap
those bridge adjusters out for a
replacement set. It has some similarities in
tone to the Full Circle from Fishman, with a
fuller bottom end; it has nice definition and
not a lot of top-end clack. Arco is full and
well-balanced, with really nice warmth on
all strings. And digging in, the more aggressive bow tones came
through the amp well.
For the ultimate easy-on, easy-off pickup
solution, there is the SoundClip Pickup. It’s
an extremely well-engineered, self-contained transducer unit
that offers a great deal of flexibility. We feel that its tone is
quite different from the original Realist. On
our basses, we find the pickup to have a
more detailed tone, which can sometimes
provide more "cut" (without necessarily
needing more volume) in an ensemble
situation. Yet the SoundClip has a more
linear response, you can hear more frequencies and much more
string detail. It’s not as warm as the other Realist models,
though – at least not in our experience. But that’s not
necessarily a bad thing!
David Gage Docking Station – 89.99
This is a tailpiece mounted universal volume
control, which allows you to have passive
control – or bypass the volume control
altogether. Convenient tailpiece mounting.
FREE US shipping!
Full Circle - $219.95
BP-100 - $159.95
The Full Circle pickup includes two adjusters to
replace the adjusters in your adjustable bridge;
one contains the transducers, the second is a
matching, regular adjuster. The Full Circle is
available in three sizes to ensure that it is
installable in most bridges. Its sound is natural with a nice mix
of body and string. Has a nice “cut” for use in a band with lots
of players, too!
The BP-100, meanwhile, has a sound that is
focused on the string, not the body. There's little
wood in the equation. If that's the sound you're
going for, you may be quite pleased with its easy installation
and sound.
Many of the pickups on this page are available in special
“Package Deals” which include preamps, mounting kits,
volume knobs that mount on your tailpiece, and other special
offers. Check out the website for details!

Ehrlund EAP w/Preamp - $599
KRIVO Humbucking Magnetic Pickup - $189
The Ehrlund Acoustic Pickup (EAP) is a
“linear
microphone”
for
acoustic
instruments. The looks of this triangle might
say “this is just another piezo element” — but in our tests on
Bob's carved Juzek and several other basses in the shop, we
found this pickup has a very open, quite "mic-like" sound realistic, and not so "direct"
sounding (as pickups can often
be.) And it’s less prone to
feedback, and picking up other
closely positioned instruments
onstage, as a mic. So the initial impression is that you get the
realism of a mic with the convenience of a pickup. It's almost
too good to be true. Listed pricing INCLUDES preamp! FREE US
shipping!
The humbucking design of the Krivo eliminates
most extraneous noise as well as giving it a
“thick” character with reduced highs,
compared to the Schaller. It also features
“Optimized Microphonics” for more
dimensional character and improved ability
to pick up fingerboard sounds. Strings with
steel/ferrous cores is a must! It terminates in
a ¼” jack. FREE US shipping!
RB-1 and RB-1A Player - $89.95, 159.95
The RB series of pickups from Schatten Design
are simple, affordable, good-sounding pickups.
It is similar in design to the Bass Max, but our
"A/B" tests have shown the tone from the RB-1
seems to have more of a midrange emphasis to
the sound, providing a little more grit than the
Bass Max (on the same bass), where the Bass
Max seems to have a more prominent lowend response and warmer, more natural
sound. Which is "better" depends entirely
on your needs. Two models of the "Player"
model are available, the RB-1 passive (no preamp) and RB-1A
active (preamp included) version, which adds a Velcro-mounted
combination preamp and jack assembly that attaches to the
back side of the tailpiece. FREE US shipping!
MAGNETIC PICKUPS
A magnetic pickup is often the only way to go in very high
volume situations - you sacrifice tone for volume. It can also be
cool to mix a magnetic pickup with your piezo-based transducer,
to “firm up” the sound and help you cut through a dense mix.
SCHALLER Magnetic Pickup - $139
If this isn't the classic magnetic upright bass
pickup I don't know what is! This single coil
chrome plated upright bass magnetic pickup
is designed to screw to the end of your
fingerboard. Match this and your
current pickup up with one of our K&K
SOUND Two Channel Preamps and you
may be able to defeat the feedback
monster when necessary. Volume
control & ¼” jack. FREE US shipping!
ROCKABILLY PICKUPS
Rockabilly pickups are very specially designed to bring out the
percussive “click” that is so characteristic of Rockabilly Bass.
Bob developed the concept for the original K&K Rockabilly Setup
based on some “homemade” setups he saw in the field; now
ready-made “clicky” pickups and dual element sets are more
common (and very popular!)
Bass Master Rockabilly PLUS - 253.40
This pickup system starts with the Bass
Max, perfect for delivering a strong signal
to cut through the mix, and added a specially-designed
fingerboard transducer to deliver the detail you need for the
slap, mixed using a tiny preamp. You can use the separate
external volume controls to balance the main bass signal and
fingerboard sounds for just the right
mix, and you can fine tune the tonal
responses of each pickup by using the
separate internal trimmers with active
controls for treble, midrange, and bass.
Rockabilly, bluegrass, and other slap
style players, rejoice! FREE US shipping!
We offer the separate components as well, so you can
assemble your own system using a pickup you already own; see
our web site for details.
RB-2, RB-2A Rockabilly - $159.95, $219.95
The Schatten RB setups are similar in concept to the K&K
system, with a lower price tag (and fewer features). Simple and
affordable, this unit does not offer separate tone controls for
each pickup, as K&K’s larger preamp does.
The RB-2 (passive) provides the RB bass
bridge sensor, plus the slap sensor, wired to a
small black jack assembly that clips between
the strings just above the tailpiece. It includes
a convenient dual volume control that mounts to the underside
of the fingerboard. The RB-2A (active) wires the same pickups
to a Velcro-mounted combination preamp/jack assembly that
attaches to the back side of the tailpiece. It also includes a dual
volume control which mounts to the underside of the
fingerboard. - FREE US shipping!

MICROPHONES
Golden Mic Package Systems:
Nothing sounds more natural, when amplifying or recording
your bass, than a microphone. Only a microphone "hears" what
your ears hear -- the actual acoustic sound waves that your
instrument produces. But they can be more difficult to work
with – feedback, and picking up other instruments on stage,
come with the territory. But the “true voice” comes through…
Golden Trinity MIC UPGRADE system is
designed to integrate with your current pickup. It includes the
Golden Microphone and cable to be plugged into your other
pickup, and the Golden Trinity Two channel Preamp for each
channel), all for $227.50, free US shipping.
AMT Professional Condenser Mics - $499 - $689
AMT has earned a lot of respect in the
audio and music industries with their
excellent instrument microphones — we’ve
actually shipped some to Carnegie Hall! Their clever mounting
systems gently and quickly clamp on the bout or tailpiece of
your instrument without tools or damage.
The
pro-grade
electret
condenser
microphone is suspended in a 4-point
isolation ring eliminating vibrations and
handling noise. See more details on our
site! FREE US shipping!
DPA 4099B Upright Bass Microphone - $599.95
The 4099B is a pro level bass microphone from Danish company
DPA; with super-lightweight construction, an integrated
mounting clip system, and top-notch sound, could it be the
perfect microphone for live upright bass? The mic itself has a
frequency range all the way down to 20
Hz, well below the fundamental pitch of
your low E string. Its focused pattern is
designed to provide the most gain before
feedback, and it uses a clever lightweight
rubber string clip to place the gooseneckmounted mic capsule in-between the
bridge and fingerboard, a popular spot for
open, realistic mic'ing. FREE US Shipping!
Golden Bullet Microphone for Bass - $139.30
K&K’s affordable mic is a mini condenser,
chosen specifically for its characteristics and
performance with the Double Bass. It was designed and custom
built by K&K in their shop in Oregon. Bob
worked extensively with K&K to finalize
the selection of this mic. The Mic is
available as a stand-alone, but it can also
be had in several configurations with
other preamps and blendable with
pickups for the ultimate in sonic flexibility.
The Golden Trinity Two Channel Preamp, included with some of
the Trinity Microphone systems, has Bass/Midrange/Treble for
each channel, with separate internal gain controls to balance
the mic & pickup perfectly!
Golden Trinity MIC / BASS MAX system includes the Golden
Microphone, a Bass Max wing-mounted pickup, and the Golden
Trinity Two channel Preamp. $312.20, free US shipping.
Golden Trinity MIC / DOUBLE BIG TWIN system includes the
Golden Mic w/Double Big Twin pickup, and the Golden Trinity
Two channel Preamp. $320.60, free US shipping.
H-Clamp Bass Microphone Mount - $105-152
The H-Clamp is a precision,
sophisticated
microphone
mounting device. This clever,
well-made unit uses a clamp
that echoes the design of the
traditional luthier's edge
clamp (cramp), using the
edge of the instrument, to avoid damping the instrument's
natural vibrations. The H-Clamp is compatible with any standard
mic clip or suspension mount. It uses "space age" construction
materials, extremely light yet secure. Silicone and other
material inserts and sleeves are used for all the contact points
to avoid damage and minimize vibration. We also stock models
for other instruments, like Cello, Mandolin, and Acoustic Guitar.

PREAMPLIFIERS
Adding a preamplifier might provide an improvement to your
setup – here are some common reasons you might want one:
• you need to buffer the signal from your pickup to your amp
• useful features on the preamp that are not on your amp
• a volume control convenient to the instrument
• you need to boost a low-gain pickup
• you want to blend multiple pickups, or a pickup and mic, etc.
• you need a good DI interface to send a feed to the soundman
Schatten Design Mini Pre – $59.95, Two Channel $99.95
Want just a low-priced,
basic, no muss/no fuss
preamp with a volume
knob and nothing more, to
buffer the impedance of
your piezo pickup? This one’s inexpensive, tiny
(1x2.25x4.25in.), lightweight & easy to use -- and there’s a twochannel model as well! FREE US shipping!

Corus Combo Amplifier - $1419
Ten2 2x10” Combo Amplifier - $1649
FREE SHIPPING to “lower 48”; small charge to AK & HI.
If you haven't yet
experienced
the
ACOUSTIC
IMAGE
Contra Coda, Corus,
and Ten2 Combo Amps, you are in for a delightful surprise — If
you have, you already know that you want
one! The original combo was designed by
bassist/engineer Dr. Rick Jones to
accurately reproduce the sound of upright
(and electric) bass, guitar, and other
instruments with one small, light, easy-tocarry enclosure. He’s continued to make
improvements over the years, and the current models are the
apex of that development.
Coda EX Extension Speaker - $529
Corus EX Extension Speaker - $569
Ten2 EX Extension Speaker - $709
The cabinet is available by itself, for larger
venues, as the Coda EX or Corus EX; adding it to a combo
increases the power output! (You can also use it with a different
head if you choose.)
Clarus Series 4PLUS Two-Channel Amp Head - $949
The ACOUSTIC IMAGE Amplifier used in the Ten2, Coda and
Corus combos is also available separately. The two channel
Clarus Amps weigh a mere 5 lbs., yet deliver 350w@8ohms and
650w@4ohms and have the same onboard effects A padded gig
bag and Speakon to 1/4” speaker adaptor
are included.
The preamp/power section of the
ACOUSTIC IMAGE combos are as unique as
the cabinet, with a distinct and warm
sound unlike most solid state amps. A
parallel effects loop allows the addition of external effects, and
a switchable notch/high pass filter helps tame boomy rooms or
eliminate an annoying resonant frequency. Dual-use input jacks
allow the use of 1/4” or XLR inputs. A built-in DI balanced XLR
output allows connection to a mixing board for PA or recording.
FREE SHIPPING to “lower 48”; small charge to AK & HI.
FLEX Preamp - $599
FLEX Powered Speaker Module - $1399
The unique design of the combos is a cylindrical cabinet shape
with one flat side to accommodate a downward firing 10”
woofer, and forward firing 5” mid/high
driver; The Ten2 adds a second 10”
woofer facing forward, for a slightly
more direct sound (and substitutes a
small dome tweeter for the 5” driver).
The icing on the cake is the clean,
powerful 600 watt removable head
featured in the “Premier” combos (the
entry-level Contra is 300w, non-removable). This design yields
flat frequency response, extended, tight, well-controlled natural
bass sound, and omnidirectional output below 800 Hz — the
Contra, Coda and Corus are not much more than a foot tall,
11.5”H x 16”D, and weigh less than 21 lbs, while the Ten2 is
17"H x 15"D and 29lb.
The current Series 4PLUS models of the Premier combos have a
removable head and a digital effects section, and all feature
two completely independent input channels with their own
controls. The Corus uses a different woofer, matched for guitarrange instruments, but is otherwise identical to the Coda.
Combos include a lightweight cover and carrying strap, with a
padded soft cases available. Many more details on-line!
With two convenient components - a 2channel preamp and a compact, 2x10 triamped powered speaker - you have a
powerful modular SYSTEM that can
handle most any professional situation.
The time-tested preamp connects directly
to the FLEX Powered Speaker, using a
single CAT5 network cable for simple, flexible connectivity,
including the power for the preamp.
When it's time to get loud, the FLEX powered speaker module
has the goods. Based on the popular Ten2 speaker array, it
features the most compact 2x10 (plus tweeter) available - and
now adds a tri-amped power amp for best possible sound
quality. The design of the cabinet features a traditional front
facing 10" woofer to present a traditional amped sound, but
couples it with a second, downward-facing 10" woofer, which
radiates sound outward, enveloping the listener in a wide
sound field. This open, room-filling sound is the trademark
sound that Acoustic Image down-firing cabinets have become
well-known for. It is superb for acoustic instruments, from
upright bass all the way up to violins and mandolins.
FREE SHIPPING to “lower 48”; small charge to AK & HI.
FOURTEEN DAY TRIAL PERIOD ON ACOUSTIC GEAR -- during
which you may return the amp in like new condition, for a
refund less our shipping cost and a small deduction for credit
card processing (if applicable).

EUPHONIC AUDIO Amplification
NL-210 2x10” with Tweeter - $1250
EA Micro 2-channel Amplifier - $725
EA Doubler 2-channel Amplifier - $725
With new EA-designed 10” drivers and a
super smooooth tweeter. Bob ordered
two for himself the moment he heard
the original prototype! Rated at 500
watts, only 34 lbs., very clean,
transparent sound, with a deep and
honest low B.
These tiny amps (Micro: 2.1"H x 8.5"W x 5.4"D, 3 lbs -- Doubler:
2.1"H x 10.5"W x 5.4"D, 3.5 lbs.) will knock
your socks off, leaving your shoes firmly tied.
Both of these little monsters feature 550 watts
into 4 ohms, or 310w/8 ohms! The EA amps,
while designed with electric bass in mind, have
extremely uncolored, “transparent” sound, so they work
exceptionally well with upright as well. And since they also can
really dial in a great electric bass tone, they are a perfect amp
for “doubling” players, who need one amp for both upright and
acoustic basses.
Both amps have two switchable channels,
three band EQ for each channel, effects loop
with blend, DI output, mute, tuner send, 1
megohm input impedance, 120/240v, internal
jumper options; the Doubler adds XLR input
w/phantom power, Phase knob, notch filter.
I have always loved the EA heads and cabinets I’ve owned and
gigged for many years. No humps, bumps, or artificial
sweeteners. Just the honest full-range, studio-like sound that
double bass and electric bass deserve!
EA Wizzy 10 Speaker Cabinet - $525
EA Wizzy 12 Speaker Cabinet - $599
EA Wizzy 12 MLINE Speaker Cabinet - $699
Using very efficient drivers and special
“Wizzer” cones, the Wizzy speaker line offers a
very full-sounding, compact speaker that very
musically “rounds off” the top end (you don’t
have that ultra-accurate, but harsh-sounding,
tweeter to turn off). The ultra-compact
15x12x11 inch, 18lb Wizzy 10 is amazing! The compact cab with
a ten inch driver makes an ideal companion to the 2.5 lb. Micro
or Doubler amplifier. This little speaker sounds MUCH BIGGER
than it has any right to.
When you need a little more “real” bass,
the Wizzy 12 brings it, without a lot of extra
bloat. It has a 12 inch 4 ohm speaker
w/integrated whizzer cone for smooth
highs. The Wizzy M-Line
was once a Limited Edition, but proved so
popular that it became a mainstay in the
Wizzy lineup. It has an expanded M cabinet
with side vents, extending the lower
frequency response, with slightly reduced
mids and a good bit more bottom, thanks to its revolutionary
“transmission line” design – internal baffling that makes the
cabinet “virtually” larger than it physically is. Cool!
SB110 SoundBlock Combo Amp - $399
SB200H SoundBlock Head - $299
We know not everyone wants to
(or can) spend the bucks to get a
boutique amp for their upright bass. We proudly offer and
recommend (and use) amps in the Acoustic Image and Euphonic
Audio lines, both of which are highly
respected, top-quality brands. But, let's
face it - they don't come cheap. We’ve
been looking for a lower priced amp for
Upright Bass that doesn’t sound “electric”,
and we’ve found one! It’s
relatively light and compact at 23 lbs. and
14x14x14 inches. Conservatively rated at 100
watts, the single channel amp has a 1 megohm
input impedance, ideal for piezo transducers.
The 10” speaker delivers surprising lows but is surprisingly quick
and bright for a full-range response. New SB200H Head is ready
to plug into your existing speaker, packing 200w and a few extra
features (like headphone amp, tuner output) into its tiny,
lightweight chassis.
INSTRUMENT AND SPEAKER CABLES
We manage a small, hand-picked selection of useful cables,
made by quality manufacturers, for your upright-specific needs.
Mini Preamp Mounting Kits include 1 foot cable(s), a foam
isolation square, Velcro strapping, and instructions. For OneChannel Preamps ($6), Two-Channel Preamps ($11), and TwoChannel TRS Preamps ($24). Make your own? The one foot
cables are available for $5 (mono) and $23 (TRS). See site for
details.
Need longer length ¼” cables? Ours have a right-angle jack on
the instrument side, and come in multiple lengths. Get a mono
cable in 10 foot ($15) or 18 foot ($17), or a TRS/Stereo cable in
8 foot ($22) or 15 foot ($25). We also have a 20 foot XLR
Microphone Cable for $16.50.
Specialty cables? We’ve got them too. A 1 foot “Y” Cable (1 TRS
to Dual Mono, aka Insert Cable) is $14. Our nifty “breakout
cable” for the DI on EA mini amps is $13.50. And our slick dual
cable for one Mic and one Pickup is $41.50.
We have speaker cables, too – a 3 foot Speakon cable is $18.50,
and a Speakon to ¼” cable (6 feet) is only $18.

STRINGS FOR UPRIGHT BASS
We carry an extensive selection of strings for upright basses.
While it's great that we have so many to choose from, which
ones will be best for you? There is so much to know about the
character, tone, playability, construction, tension... strings for
double basses can vary quite widely.
Don't know where to start? We've put together several string
guides (on our website) for various music types; we’re also
happy to help on the phone or by email.
You can also order individual strings from almost every set we
sell; on the main string page for the strings you want, click the
yellow box (like the one to the right) for a list of single strings
you can add to your cart!
ALL STRINGS (Sets AND Singles) SHIP FREE IN THE USA!
Corelli 370 Series Strings - $106
Corelli's versatile and articulate strings are
easy on the hands (it's a reason why they're
one of my favorites!) and bow very well.
Medium, Forte, and Extra Forte Gauges
Available, as well as Low B, Extended E, and High C. Also
available in ½ size (350A) and ¼ size (350B). The 380 Series
Strings are similar, but made without the Tungsten that makes
the 370’s so interesting; they start at $83.
D’Addario Helicore Strings - $119
The Helicore Strings from D’Addario come in
three variants; the Orchestral string is
specifically for arco (bowed) playing, with a
darker response and more bow-friendly
attack. The Pizzicato set is a brighter, articulate tone, with
longer sustain and extended decay. The Hybrid is a purposeful
compromise, for the many players who need a string that can
do both pizz and arco reasonably well.
These strings don't exhibit the "roll" when
plucked that other synthetic strings sometimes
do. They also have a nice darkness, with a bit
more "growl," at least to my ears. Under the
bow, they speak very quickly, and the pizz sustain rings clearly
without overstaying its welcome. Good volume, nice fullness especially the higher strings. Overall, they are a lower-tension,
hybrid string that works well for lots of varied situations.
Medium and Light Gauges available.
Eurosonic Bass Strings - $140
These fat strings are an alternative to more
costly and problematic gut strings, and they
are developing a cult-like following with many
jazz, rockabilly and bluegrass musicians. They
are a nice alternative to gut, and have a thick attack and less
pronounced sustain than some other strings. Their Polyamide
(what?!?) wrap, whatever that is, makes for a gentle experience
for both hands, and though bowing isn't great, it can be done.
Available in Medium, Light, and Ultra-Light (great for slappers!)
weights. Steel core works with magnetic pickups.
Innovation Ultra Black Strings - $169
Innovation Rockabilly Strings - $169
These are constructed using a flexible braided
core with a black tape winding. UltraBlack
strings have a darker tone, like most gut
strings, but have the advantage of being a bit more distinct than
gut. They offer a less "twangy" alternative to other popular jazz
strings. High-ish tension. The Rockabilly Strings are essentially a
“light” version of the Ultra Blacks – they’re more flexible and
lighter in tension though, which makes them an ideal slapping
string. Nice stability, good pitch definition, more bounce.
Innovation Super Silver Strings - $169
Innovation Silver Slaps Strings - $169
Innovation Golden Slaps Strings - $169
D’Addario Kaplan Strings - $187
Kaplan strings are D'Addario's entry into the
premium orchestral strings market. They are
designed primarily for bowed string players.
They were created to provide a rich tone,
variable dynamics, and excellent bowing response. They are
clear, yet warm in their tonal color - regardless of what register
you're playing in. Med/Light/Heavy sets, extended strings.
D’Addario Prelude Strings - $75
Prelude bass strings are multi-stranded steel
core strings that are affordable and flexible,
making them ideal for students and young
players. The strings are designed to produce a
warm tone quality with good bow response. The core design is
more flexible than a solid core, and the reduced tension and
better flexibility makes for strings that are very easy to play,
especially for younger, developing players.
Innovation Super Silver Strings are often used
for Rockabilly and Bluegrass. According to players who favor
them, they lean towards a more organic, gut-like vibe, with a
round tone with a blunter attack and quick decay, giving a
closer approximation of the gut tone - providing that 'oldschool' flavor. Nylon “wire” (not tape) gives them a subtle
“round-wound” kind of feel. The Silver Slaps are the same
string, only lighter, which is more slap friendly. And the Golden
Slaps are the same as the Silver Slaps, except that the windings
of thread under the clear wrap is gold, not silver.
Gollihur Music Catalog – This Copy Printed 10/30/14 • All information ©copyright 1997-current
Innovation Psycho Slap Strings - $179
Think of these strings, essentially, as Silver
Slaps with a much thicker diameter – a beefier
(but still light) string for faster slap styles,
including Psychobilly.
Page 9
Innovation Rockabilly Reds - $169
These new strings have a brash RED outer
winding - and their tension and tone is
designed specifically for the needs of rockabilly
bassists. They provide warm, dark-ish tone
with decent volume, making them a great string for players who
play predominantly slap-style. They're similar, but slightly
different from the black rockabilly set.
Innovation Honey Strings - $169
Innovation Honey is a Solid Core string, unlike
the braided core of the other Innovation sets,
with a Chrome Tape winding. This maintains
the Gut-like vibe with a slightly stiffer feel
under the plucking hand. The Metal wrap makes this string
much more responsive under the bow than other Innovation
strings, and thus makes a good hybrid string, similar to the Evah
Pirazzi's or Obligatos, although a bit darker sounding.
Innovation Braided “Orchestral” - $179
Particularly well suited for bowing, they have a
smooth chrome steel tape winding. But the
core is braided nylon, which creates a more
"old-timey" flavor to their pizz tone. So they
would also work well for someone looking for a good bluegrass
string. They have a deep, dark tone, which takes a lot of the
brashness out of bowing.
Jargar Bass String Sets - $131
Jargar bass strings are handmade in Denmark;
they are a steel string with a decidedly nonmetallic tone - darker, almost gut-like, with an
"easy-on-the-hands" feel. Available in Medium,
Forte (Heavy) and Dolce (Light), with extended-range strings
available.
LaBella 7710N Black Tape - $148
LaBella 7710T White Tape - $148
The longtime favorite 7710N Black Tape
Wound were developed with the assistance of
Ron Carter and Attila Zoller. Designed to be a
“jazz player’s gut alternative,” they’ve been popular for many
years. For the new White tape 7710T, LaBella worked with Ron
Carter and a number of other members of their "Inner Circle of
Artists" to come up with the newly developed strings, which
are, like the original version, metal rope core strings,
surrounded by a proprietary nylon wrap. The new strings are
wound with a clear proprietary nylon, which makes for an an
even smoother-to-the-touch string with brighter tone and
clarity than the original black-tape strings. Take your pick!
Lenzner Gut Strings – Starting at $244
If you want the sound of vintage, all-natural
bass, or are a rockabilly player wanting the
most authentic sound, you'll want to consider
real gut. And these German-made strings are
great, especially for the price! I prefer the wound A/E set which
has metal windings to achieve the mass necessary for the lower
notes without the larger diameter- they have been made this
way for centuries. Rockabilly players may appreciate that the A
and E are also available in plain, unwound gut as well.
Pirastro Eudoxa Gut Strings - $685.12
These are popular among jazz players who
want a little more brightness and a smoother
bowing surface out of their gut strings. A more
"traditional" wound gut string would be the
Olivs, also from Pirastro. All four strings are gut which is
wrapped in a flat sterling silver coating for more sustain and
smoothness.
Pirastro Oliv Gut Strings - $607.01
Kolstein Heritage String Set - $135
The Kolstein Heritage strings were designed by
Kolstein Music, Inc. They are a synthetic string
designed to offer the feel and tension of gut
strings but deliver the sound of orchestral or
jazz strings. Warm, gut-like, and bow friendly. A nice combo!
The Oliv is a natural gut string wound in
chrome steel (as opposed to the Eudoxa,
which are wound in sterling silver). They have
a strong, thick pizzicato tone with a quick
decay and short sustain. The Olivs are certainly bowable, but
require a bit more bow pressure than other strings. They
produce a dark, warm sound under the bow.
LaBella Supernil String Set - $85
They have a big and fat, boomy sound, which
can be a bluegrasser's delight! But there are
downsides. Their odd and rough "round
wound" sort of finish bugs me and it pretty
much precludes bowing. And it isn't nice and smooth to fingers,
either. I personally find that the lower strings deliver more
“boom” than precise definition. However, many folks like them
for their less than definite pitch as well as their low price!
Pirastro Jazzer Strings - $235.75
The Jazzer rope core steel strings are
recommended by Pirastro for pizzicato players,
though they can also be a good hybrid string
for players who gig many styles. They have a
long-ish sustain, clear tone, and a pretty big sound.

Page 10
Pirastro Obligato Strings - $220.52
Pirastro's popular Obligato strings have a solid
synthetic core with a very thin metal wrap.
They were designed to emulate gut strings, and
the attack is "old school" with that more blunt
and thicker, warmer hit, with a little less sustain than more
modern jazz strings. Their very smooth surface is kind to the
fingers and they are a dream to bow. Available in many
variants, including ½ and ¼ size, High C, Low B, Long E, and even
Solo and Fifths Tuning Sets.
Pirastro Evah Pirazzi Strings - $237.37
Sort of a modern update on the Obligatos; they
are similar but have marked differences. They
have less sustain than most metal-core strings;
their damping is such, that their sustain is nice,
but isn't overdone or "electric-bassy" sounding. Plucked, they
sound full and fat, with a subtle percussive "ping" to the very
front attack of the note. This unique and interesting
characteristic sets the Evahs apart as an all-around good choice
for a variety of styles, particularly if you like the "old school"
sound -- yet with something "new" thrown in.
Pirastro Passione Strings - $248.23
These are steel rope-core strings, which are
tailor-made for orchestral bow style (arco)
players. They are not "metallic" sounding at all,
and have pretty "average" tension and feel.
They're intentionally a little "dark" and don't have a lot of
definition when plucked, especially the E and A strings. But they
have big, projecting sound under the bow. Nice clarity, with a
full, rich tone, and they're quite easy to bow (naturally!)
Rotosound RS4000 Strings - $129
Made for decades, they have a nylon core,
which is flatwound with nylon on the G and D
strings, and with monel (a nickel alloy) on the A
and E strings. They have a comfortable soft
feel, with a lighter tension than most steel strings, and good
tone and volume. Good for many styles of music, including jazz,
rockabilly, bluegrass, and contemporary styles. You might
consider this set to be a alternative to gut strings if you want
some of that flavor -- but with more definition and longer
sustain than real gut.
Thomastik Belcanto Strings - $289.99
Thomastik has been making these "rope core"
(a style of winding, not what they're made of!)
strings for a couple of years, and we really love
them for both pizz and arco. They’ve been
designed for bowed work, but they have a very musical, warm
pizz sound with a very sweet sustain. Their bowed feel and
quick response is wonderful. Also available in a Solo Gauge!
Thomastik Dominant Strings - $281.99
Dominants are a long-time favorite of a lot of
players due to their gut string-like character.
They are pretty responsive for a stranded
perlon core, with the a lower level of sustain,
desirable for bowing, and again, for emulating gut's traditionally
shorter sustain characteristic.
Thomastik Spirocore Strings - $237.99
Spiros are an old favorite for jazz and other
genres and it has been a popular string for
many years. They have great sustain and a big
sound good for many styles, but remain a jazz
favorite. You'll also find them on lots of general use basses, for
bluegrass, blues, and other styles where that big sound and
sustain are prized. Lots of variants – ½ and ¼ size, weich (light),
solo, 5ths tuning, High C, Low B, Extended E – the list goes on.
Thomastik Superflexible - $183.99
Thomastik Superflexible Strings have a braided
steel thread core. For most players, the
Superflexible are a "smoother" sounding steel,
rope core string than the very popular
Spirocores. Recently, some rockabilly-slap styled players have
found that they like the solo gauge Superflexibles. Decent under
the bow, too!
Velvet Garbo Strings - $281
The Garbos have a thick diameter and a big,
dark sound. Great for jazz pizz players, they
have a punchy tone that can often "hold its
own" with a drum set. They have a solid core,
which provides a solid and distinctive power in the lower mid
frequency range, and they are clear and assertive with the
familiar "kick" as the note begins.
Velvet Anima Strings - $281
The Anima strings are thinner than Garbos,
with more articulation and sustain; they also
bow well. Great for jazz bassists who also do
arco work! They have big volume with a warm
sound, though they're not as dark as the Garbos due to their
thinner diameter. Great definition, rich bass and good balance.
Velvet Blue Strings - $165
Velvet's Blue string is their first which doesn't
feature a silk core - it's a synthetic, which
lowers cost while retaining the Velvet sound
and feel. It has great articulation, big volume,
great sustain and equal tension on all four strings (approx. 25g
per string.) Fast response and nice volume, with clear
articulation. They tend to sound a bit brighter than the silkbased Velvet strings.

BASS CASES (GIG BAGS)
BASS STANDS
Gollihur Gig Bag - $149 w/ FREE US SHIPPING
INGLES Bass Stand - $49.98
(to the US lower 48; small surcharge to AK & HI).
This is our most popular bass
stand. With its adjustable cradle
and padded neck clip, it’s simple
to use and secure; all contact
surfaces are covered with a
protective foam. As solid as it is,
the stand still folds pretty flat.
Metal construction, weighs 8.2
pounds. The INGLES' flexibility can
also enable it to accommodate a
Baby Bass, as it is designed to handle a bass, cello, or other
instruments that can be “cradled.”
Our custom-made “house” bag
incorporates features from cases that
I've used over the years, and adds a few
nice touches. A major important
feature for a bass bag, aside from the
obvious protection and price, is how
easy it is to get on and off. I don't want
a wrestling match with a bag! These
bags have zippers on both sides of the
bag -- one that goes from the endpin to
within a few inches of the top, and the
other that just about opens to the top
of the lower bout of the bass. This bag
opens w-i-d-e, ready to swallow your
bass without the aggravation of other
cases I have had. This distinctive bag is available in a really
attractive Hunter Green or Black, along with our embroidered
BASS logo. Also features: • Lots of Double stitched handles •
Monster sized zippers on both sides and all pockets • Large
padded bridge protector • Our International BASS logo
embroidered in white • One bow pocket, three accessory
pockets • A pair of D-rings on the shoulders • Rich soft lining,
finished seams • 20mm (over 3/4 inch!) of two stage foam •
Durable Cordura style, heavy duty water resistant material
outer shell. It fits ¾ size Kays and Engelhardts perfectly. See our
web site for more photos and specific measurements.
PROFESSIONAL Bass Bag - $269
This seriously heavy-duty case
features thick padding, shoulder
straps & wheels. While the Gollihur
Bag is a great case, more frequent
giggers will want a bag with heavier
duty padding and straps, including
heavy duty backpack straps. This is it,
and at a great price. This bag has
dense, lined padding that is
approximately 1¼" thick. See the array
of photos on-line to truly appreciate
this bag and list of features, like:
• Seven heavily stitched, reinforced
handles • monster sized zippers on
both sides, the main zipper goes
completely around the scroll • heavy
duty bridge protector • Padded, adjustable backpack straps
• Two luggage-style 1.5” wheels at the base of the back • Large
pleated bow pocket • Expandable accessory pocket • Two
zippered compartments on the back • Lots of rubber
bumpers/skid patches • Rich lining with finished seams
• Durable heavy duty Cordura-type outer shell
This is a bag that can run with the big dogs, and at a price that
will surprise you -- in grey/maroon trim, or black/gray.
KÖNIG AND MEYER 141 Bass Stand - $119
Electric Upright Bass Stand - $139.99
I once used one of the light weight Hamilton bass stands that is
similar in design to this stand, but its
questionable stability bugged me.
K&M is a well-known and respected
musical stand manufacturer based in
Germany, and their design and
execution of a similar, portable stand
is far more confidence inspiring than
the Hamilton. It surrounds the C bout,
and the very solid frame has springlock arms. This newly updated black version has a deeper,
triangular “cup”, and is of a slightly more robust construction
than the original chrome model. Special alternate version for
EUB eliminates the cradles and uses an adjustable neck-holding
bracket.
HERCULES Bass Stand - $62.95
This stand's design allows for easy placement of the bass;
simply lift the bass onto
the padded bottom cradle,
and lean it back onto the
padded backrest. No neck
cradle means you have
easy access to the
instrument, even offering
the potential to play it
while it's on the stand if
that is something that
might interest you (see web site for important details).
Two locking pins prevent the stand from "folding" on you
unexpectedly. The stand is solid and strong, with a capacity
over 100 pounds - far more than your bass weighs. It includes
an integrated hook for hanging your bow. The stand folds quite
flat and to a reasonably compact size, and this is no wimpy
plastic stand -- it is of all metal construction, except for padding
and feet, yet still weighs only 7.5 pounds.

ACCESSORIES
Solid Rubber Endpin Wheel - $42
GAINES Deluxe Bass Wheel - $136
Bass Buggie Transporter - $120 (Free US Shipping!)
Moving a bass over long distances can be stressful – on your
shoulders, and on your bass. Smooth the ride with a classic
endpin wheel! Just pull the end pin rod out and slip in a post
with a smooth-rolling, large-diameter tire.
Our Solid Rubber Endpin Wheel rolls on ball
bearings. It has a ½ inch shaft designed to fit the
standard Kay and Engelhardt end pin, or alternately
a 8mm or 10mm size shaft. The 5.75 solid rubber
wheel has some give, enough for a laminated bass.
But a carved (or more fragile) bass deserves the
Gaines Heavy Duty Bass Wheel; a fully pneumatic eight inch
tire with an inner tube, which is the best way
to absorb the shock of the road rather than
transmit it to your valuable instrument.
Removable shafts in many sizes make it
possible to economically own one wheel for
use with multiple instruments, obtaining a
new pin to fit another bass. The wheel itself uses heavy duty
ball bearings, and the whole assembly is made of top quality
hardware, with a lifetime warranty on all the metal parts.
If you don’t want to deal with the “ins and outs” of an endpin
wheel, check out the fabulous Bass Buggie Transporter. An
alternative to a wheel, it allows you
to roll your bass around like a hand
truck. With large (6") diameter
"rollerblade" style wheels, the Bass
Buggie rolls very smoothly and is
easy to control. You can even use
the Bass Buggie with or without your bass bag on your bass.
KOLSTEIN'S Cleaning and Polishing Kit - $22.50
Top shelf care. Includes cleaner, which removes stubborn dirt
and rosin build up, and polish, to restore the full natural luster
of the finest finishes. Two polishing cloths are included.
KOLSTEIN Bass Bib - $27.50
Protect your bass' finish! Strap loops around the neck to hold
the bib securely in place. Features a luxurious covering with
satin backing, includes accessory pocket and pencil holder. Dark
brown velvet or black with satin backing.
Meisel Metro Tuner - $25
This compact device offers lots of
goodies, including a chromatic tuner
with both a built-in microphone and
1/4” input; a visual metronome needle,
flashing multi-color LEDs, pulsing beat; and a 3 octave Tone
Generator for tuning by ear. Includes onboard speaker,
headphone jack, and more.
Meisel COM-90 Clip On Tuner - $25
This cool MEISEL tuner has a small transducer
built into the clamp to sense your bass’
vibration, great for tuning in noisy rooms (but it
also has a mic). I’ve tried several clip on tuners,
but the COM-90 kicks butt. It is small, at 2.25" x
1.5" x .45" (without gooseneck, clip) and the
display is a very visible bright blue that changes
to green when you are in tune!

ELECTRIC BASS INSTRUMENTS
Eminence Portable 4-String Upright Bass - $2840
Five String $3231 • Removable Neck 4 $3118 • R/N-5 $3509
I first fell in love with the EMINENCE electric upright bass (EUB)
at the January 1999 NAMM show. After I
started to play it, I didn't want to stop. As
someone who started on double bass, I still
gravitate to an instrument that feels familiar to
my hands and ears, and the EMINENCE EUB
really fit the bill. It’s a gorgeous instrument with
a vibe that connects it to its larger brethren.
What's the difference between it and other
EUBs? This is an actual hollow-bodied acoustic
instrument, with a sound post and bass bar. It
SOUNDS real because it IS real.
The EMINENCE is available in two forms, the
standard fixed-neck instrument, and the one
with a removable neck that allows you to
transport the bass in a shorter, travel case.
Here are some details that apply to both:
• Fully acoustic body delivers real acoustic sound • Small body
size allows the Eminence bass to fit into any conventional car
• Standard-size neck and scale length for familiar feel and
playing ease • Fully adjustable bridge height allows
personalized action adjustments • Removable Waist Extension
simulates typical double bass contact

Padded soft case, waist extension, Realist pickup, and Steadyfoot™ Anti-rotational End Pin Foot are included.
We stock replacement Eminence adjustable bridges, cases,
machines, and bout extensions.
NS Design CR4M/CR5M EUBs – $Call for Price!
While I feel that the Eminence is the closest thing to "the real
thing" in a more portable format, I'm quite conscious
of the needs for an instrument that can be played at
much higher volumes. Our favorite solid body bass
from NS Design is the CR-M (4 or 5 string) which
features both magnetic and piezo pickup elements, an
active preamp, and lots of gig-worthy features.
Traditional two-band (bass and treble) EQ and the
balance control to blend the magnetic and the piezo
pickups, and "Polar™" control to change the piezo
pickup's response to either vertical or lateral vibration
(for the best bowed and plucked sounds. Top shelf! Call us for
unbeatable pricing.
Omni Bass 34” Electric Upright Bass – $Call for Price!
This smaller take on the CR-M bass is uniquely
attractive to certain players - particularly those
who want a "crossover" instrument to bridge
the gap between electric and upright bass. It
has the common 34” bass guitar scale, but with
an arched fingerboard for bowing. The very
cool Boomerang™ Strap System lets you wear
the instrument just like a regular electric bass.
It is available as both four and five string models. The Omni Bass
is also available in fretted form; prices are slightly higher.

We carry and stock NS DESIGN accessories -- Flight Cases,
Stands, Strap Systems, Neck Heel, strings; we even have a
special plastic Hard Case we found. Check the site for details!
Gold Tone Micro Bass/Short Scale EBG: $393.50
NS Design NXT Electric Upright Bass $1499-1599
NS Design NXT OmniBass Short Scale $1599-1699
NS Design’s NXT Bass has really turned
the EUB market on its head. It offers the
fit and finish from the meticulous Czech
shop, as well as a maple body, ebony fingerboard, at a new
price point. These basses are similar in design to the four and
five string CR series instruments, just without the
preamp and mag pickup —available in Amberburst
and in a very classy looking Black Satin. The NXT
Bass is a full-scale instrument with the appropriate
string spacing and arched fingerboard – yes, it can
be bowed. Newer to the NXT line is the NXT
OmniBass, the shorter scale (34”) model with the
same features; and it’s wearable (It comes with
their “Boomerang Strap” (the bass comes with a
tripod stand.) It is also available with 4 or 5 strings.
All NXT models come with a nice padded gig bag,
and are fully set up and ready to play right out of the box,
thanks to the wizards at NS Design’s shop in Maine.

NEW UPRIGHT BASSES
Gollihur Music Estle Louis Basses
Laminated Basses in ¾, ½, and ¼ sizes - $1349
Fully Carved Basses in ¾ & ½ sizes - $2749
I spent quite a bit of time over the past
several years searching for a well-made
and great-sounding bass that could be
completely set up before shipping. We
have at last found a reputable builder and
a detail-oriented shop with whom we
could make these arrangements. Having
sold these basses now for several years,
you can find many positive reviews on the
internet from very satisfied customers!
The laminated Gollihur Music Estle Louis
basses are available with Gamba style
corners (inward curves as in photo) in ¾, ½
and ¼ size, and Violin style corners in ¾ size. The fully carved
Gollihur Music Estle Louis basses are available with Gamba
style corners in ¾ and ½ size. The price includes the
professional set-up and adjustable bridge. Your brand-new
bass is strung up and READY TO PLAY right out of the box... no
luthier trip or extra costs needed! This setup service includes:
• Planing the fingerboard (carving the appropriate "relief" into
the board) for low action • Fitting a quality maple adjustable
bridge • Shaping the nut for left-hand ease of play • Ensuring
optimum soundpost placement • Playing each instrument to
ensure maximum playability and sound.
These basses can be used for any style of music. We can also
have any string we carry installed on your bass if you like (at
additional cost), or you may wish to start with the stock string
and replace them later.
What makes these basses such an amazing value?
• Your bass arrives FULLY SET UP by a luthier - no additional
costs are required to optimize the playability or tone. Your new
bass can essentially be played right out of the box!
• Your bass includes a quality maple adjustable bridge (an
expensive upgrade at bass shops) already installed and properly
fitted.
• Your bass contains quality components (tuning machines,
endpin) so there are no parts you'll need to upgrade.
• Real Ebony fingerboard and tailpiece - not "ebonized"
(painted or stained) hardwoods.
• 10-Day evaluation period – you won’t get stuck with an
instrument you don’t love!
Fully Carved Bulgarian Bass – starting at $3199
A chance encounter at the 2000 NAMM show started my
relationship with this nearly 100 year old Bulgarian stringed
instrument manufacturer. The full story is on the web site, but I
have offered these European made fully carved basses at very
low prices for over ten years now! This instrument has the
traditional solid spruce top and solid maple sides and back; the
fingerboard is ebony, the tailpiece hardwood. Yes, it’s pretty,
but the answer to a more important question: it sounds great,
with all the resonance and life that you would
expect from a fully carved bass. I take $200
good faith deposits to reserve a future
instrument, and offer a seven day trial period.
Yes, they will make 5 STRING BASSES, as well as
4/4 size basses and Left-Handed ones, too!
They can be special ordered. All basses have
hefty European style necks. These basses have
a long and established history with Gollihur
Music, and you can definitely ask around and
find out what a great bargain they are – a true
European bass in the low $3k range!
Have you heard of ENGELHARDT?? How about Kay!?!?
Engelhardt bought Kay's double bass and cello
production facilities in the late 60's when Kay
closed up, and has continued manufacturing

ENGELHARDTS follow the Kay line closely and
have the following bass models available at
unexpectedly low prices.
Check out our exclusive Gollihur Music

with Engelhardt to make two
exclusive models that pay tribute
to the 1941 Kay Bob has had since
1966. The body is finished in a rich medium dark
satin color, and it includes an upgraded
conventional endpin, scalloped fingerboard end,
and adjustable bridge. Classic (Jatoba trim) $1219,
