MISSION Statement
Rye Country Day School is a coeducational, college
preparatory school dedicated to providing students
from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade Twelve with
an excellent education using both traditional and
innovative approaches. In a nurturing and supportive
environment, we offer a challenging program that
stimulates individuals to achieve their maximum
potential through academic, athletic, creative, and
social endeavors. We are actively committed to
diversity. We expect and promote moral responsibility,
and strive to develop strength of character within a

It was a banner year for Rye Country Day School. It is with great pleasure that we thank our community for its extraordinary
generosity. Once again we exceeded our goal with a total of $3,980,688. This total reflects paid contributions during the fiscal
year July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014. It is with great pride and sincere gratitude that we present this report that reflects the strong
support and commitment of the Rye Country Day community.

LETTER From The HEADMASTER
Dear RCDS Community:
I am pleased to report that the 2013-14 school year was outstanding in so many respects. Individual
academic and extracurricular achievement was at an all-time high as RCDS students excelled in the
classroom, on the stage, in the athletic arena, and through service-learning opportunities. The members
of the Class of 2014 certainly set the bar high in the Upper School through their achievement and
leadership, earning places at the nation’s top colleges and universities.

During 2013-14, significant progress continued on various school-wide initiatives, including diversity,
sustainability, and public purpose. The RCDS Auxiliary celebrated the School’s 2013 Green Ribbon Award
in a creative Green Carpet event that raised funds specifically for additional sustainability projects
at school. The annual Arts Festival and International Fair reached record participation by bringing
together school families from all three divisions. Service-learning projects were developed in classrooms
throughout the School, while the Saturday morning SET and after-school SCOPE literacy programs
expanded in support of elementary students and families from the Port Chester public schools. The
evening Celebration of Pubic Purpose was a fitting tribute to a comprehensive effort put forth in support
of this initiative. Finally, the Wildcat World blog was launched as a way to share exciting developments
with the broader community.
At the same time, plans were finalized on the School’s new strategic plan, Bold Vision 2020, which
identifies the goals and priorities for the next five to seven years, which will include Rye Country Day
School’s 150th anniversary in the 2018-19 academic year!
The 2013-14 year was a record-setting one with respect to fund-raising at RCDS. As many of you
know, this was Ginny Rowen’s final year as Director of Development and Alumni Affairs at RCDS, and she
concluded her twenty-five year tenure with stellar results for the annual giving campaign. Here are some of
the highlights:
ÝÛÛI][gj\Û8ffmYdÛ=mf\ÛKglYd – The 2013-14 Annual Fund raised $3,980,688, which was a
21 percent increase in the total funds raised compared to the previous year and was the ninth
consecutive year over $3 million.
ÝÛÛI][gj\ÛJ]fagjÛGYj]flÛ>a^l – With ~Ûh]j[]fl participation, the parents of the Class of 2014
contributed $1,136,178 to the Senior Gift with $1,037,048 designated for the Class of 2014
Endowment Fund – an incredibly generous investment in the School’s future!
ÝÛÛ:mjj]flÛGYj]flÛGYjla[ahYlagf – At Ûh]j[]fl , current parent participation continued
at unparalleled levels, reaching 95 percent or better for the fourteenth consecutive year, while
nationally, current parent participation averages just 63 percent.

ÝÛÛI:;JÛ8dmefaÛ– The Alumni continued their generous support with Ûh]j[]fl participation in the RCDS Alumni Fund,
which exceeds the 16 percent national average participation rate for alumni of independent day schools.
ÝÛÛK `]ÛI:;JÛ8mpadaYjq – The Auxiliary raised $147,300 through two Book Fairs, a Green Carpet celebration, a virtual
auction, and Spirit Wear sales.
ÝÛÛC]Y\]jk`ahÛ>anaf_ - 620 members of the RCDS community made leadership-level donations in support of annual giving, thus
creating a strong foundation for the record-breaking year.
ÝÛÛJmhhgjlÛ^gjÛ8[Y\]ea[Û8:K@FE – This summer's enrichment program for middle school students from local, under-resourced
public schools also set a record by raising a total of $126,285.
There are many people to thank for this amazing year of fund-raising at Rye Country Day School. Of course, the core foundation
of this continuing success is the continuing support of the School’s various constituents – trustees, current and former parents, alumni,
grandparents, current and former faculty and staff, and friends. Heartfelt thanks to everyone who made Rye Country Day a priority in
their charitable giving during the 2013-14 academic year.
I would like to thank the following individuals who provided the enthusiastic leadership for various components of the 2013-14
annual giving campaign: Trustees 8f\j]YÛJmddanYf and CYmjYÛDYllkgf contributed energy and determination, while directing
the overall 2013-14 Annual Fund effort. Board President C]]Û=dYfY_Yf, together with fellow senior parents and former trustees
=Yjj]dÛJlYjc]j and BaeÛNY[`]f`]aeÛNY_eYfÛ¿, co-chaired the record-breaking Class of 2014 Senior Parent Gift that
also achieved 100 percent senior parent participation.
GYlja[aYÛYf\ÛKgeÛCgn]bgq once again co-chaired the Past Parent Scholarship Fund drive; former Board President and
past parent K]\Û;mff extended his ongoing commitment to the School for another year as the chair of the Grandparent
Campaign; Alumni I]Z][[YÛ:YdeYfÛ¿ and NÛ;q]jÛ?Ydh]jfÛ¿ spearheaded the 2013-14 Alumni Fund; Faculty
members ;gfYd\ÛBqd]ÛAjÛ¿~ and >affqÛ9dY[c rallied support from faculty, staff, and administrators for annual giving;
and Auxiliary President Cqff]ÛNgdalr]j along with her committed volunteers, helped to build a stronger sense of community
while raising funds to support various Auxiliary-sponsored initiatives.
Finally, I want to acknowledge and thank the Alumni and Development Office staff members for their tireless efforts,
dedication, and attention to detail, all of which contribute to the ongoing success of fund-raising at Rye Country Day. Leading the
way to another record-breaking year was Director of Development and Alumni Affairs >affqÛIgo]f, who concluded her twentyfive year tenure with a capstone year of fund-raising. Supporting Ginny along the way were Assistant Director of Development for
Alumni Affairs CakYÛPgmf_, who constantly reached out to and connected with our growing alumni body; Development Associate
B]ddqÛD]dYf\jg, who managed all aspects of the database; and Development Support Staff :gfkm]dgÛ?Y_]j, who helped to
keep the office records in order.

Annual Giving, a yearly fundraising effort, helps the School bridge that gap. The funds raised by Annual Giving support the School’s
outstanding programs, enabling access to the best available resources for students. It also contributes to teachers’ salaries and

WHY DOES PARTICIPATION MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

The participation of Rye Country Day parents in Annual Giving is of inestimable importance. First,
it is a visible expression of our community’s support of and confidence in the ongoing quality of
a Rye Country Day education. Last year, 96% of current parents participated in Annual Giving,
which is well beyond the 63% average participation at comparable independent day schools across
the country. In addition, such extensive current parent participation encourages the broader
philanthropic community’s support of the School and its mission. RCDS aims for 100% current
parent participation in the Annual Fund.

The Annual Fund is the
cornerstone of all fundraising
at Rye Country Day.
Unrestricted gifts to the Annual Fund are crucial in
supporting the academic programs of the School,
including financial aid, faculty salaries, academic
programs, athletics, the arts, technology, and the
extracurricular life of the School. The Fund contributed
7% to the School’s budget this year. The outstanding
success of the 2013-2014 Annual Fund would not
have been possible without the leadership and
dedication of our parent and alumni volunteers.

ACADEMIC ACTION
A special thank you to the many
parents, alumni, and friends who
contributed $126,285 to ACTION.
ACTION is a four-week academic enrichment program
at Rye Country Day for highly motivated public school
students entering Grades Seven, Eight, and Nine. This
summer’s four-week program, which is funded entirely
by the RCDS community, served 70 students from
traditionally under resourced public school districts. The
program promotes confidence and strength of character
while helping students to grow academically and develop
as leaders.
These contributions ensure annual support for
the Academic ACTION summer program and
RCDS scholarship aid for very deserving and
talented students.

Remembering RCDS through your will is an easy way to leave a lasting legacy.
Founded in 1997 to honor the memory of Rye Country Day School’s first
headmistress, the Susan J. Life Society recognizes and honors the generosity of
those who have made provisions for the School in their wills or estate plans.
Membership in the Susan J. Life Society confers special recognition on
benefactors who have determined to reach beyond their own lives to enhance
and secure opportunities for future generations of Rye Country Day students.

Securities
You may find that you can give more to RCDS at less cost to you by contributing securities that are worth more now than when you
bought them.
Matching Gifts
Many companies will match contributions made by an employee (including the spouse). Ask your employer if your company has such a
program and, if so, obtain the proper form to forward to RCDS. The donor receives credit for both the original gift and the amount of
the match.
Real Estate
In many instances, capital gains tax can be avoided by donating land to the School. You will receive a tax deduction based on the fair
market value at the time of the transfer.
Bequests
Gifts made through wills have been a major source of support that has helped ensure the future of RCDS. If you include a bequest to RCDS
in your will, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you are helping provide a Rye Country Day education to generations of students in
the future. You may also reduce or eliminate federal estate taxes, and state inheritance or estate taxes may also be reduced.
Insurance
If you have had a life insurance policy for many years, the protection the insurance policy offered earlier may no longer be needed. If you
donate the policy to RCDS, you can take a tax deduction for the present value of the policy this year, and RCDS will eventually receive
the proceeds. In this way you will be able to make a surprisingly large contribution to the endowment fund, and your premium payments
qualify as charitable contributions.

If you are living comfortably but can't give away capital because you need all your income for current expenses, you may create a charitable
remainder trust under which you will receive a fixed dollar amount or a fixed percentage of the trust assets each year for the rest of your life,
with the remaining assets held in the trust passing to RCDS as the time of your death.

If you are not pressed for current income and would like to reduce the "bite" that estate taxes will take from your estate, a charitable
lead trust will pay a fixed dollar amount or a fixed percentage of the trust assets to RCDS each year for the remainder of your life or for a
predetermined number of years, with the principal of the trust passing to your heirs after the School's interest in the trust has terminated.
