SPOTLIGHT #1
During the fall of 2012, CSSA sent a delegation of student
leaders to the nation’s capitol to advocate on behalf of CSU
students on higher education policy matters and legislation.
Arne Duncan @arneduncan23: Today’s cost of college is a huge worry. It’s a shared responsibility, we’ll invest, states need to invest & colleges must contain costs.

The California Higher Education Student Summit
(CHESS) is a three-day conference seeking to train and
empower students to advocate for greater access to an
affordable, quality education in California.
Derek Aitken @derekjaitken: Wow! Over 280 students at #CHESSXVIII today! Thanks for having me today @csustudents - Do us proud tomorrow!

CHESS XVIII
The conference included educational sessions on higher
education policy issues and interactive trainings on how
to lobby members of the state legislature. The summit
culminated with an advocacy day at the state capitol,
where student delegations met with legislators and
staff to discuss higher education legislation and issues
including the CSU budget and online education. Students
advocated for the passage of CSSA’s two sponsored bills:
AB 447 and SB 325.

SPOTLIGHT #3
In July 2012, the CSSA Board of Directors
unanimously approved a resolution in favor of
Proposition 30, an initiative to temporarily raise
income and sales taxes in order to balance the
state budget and reinvest in public education.
CSSA @csustudents: Student turnout in CA is looking good! it could be a deciding factor for Prop. 30. Keep pushing your campuses to go vote!!

PROP. 30
As a result of the passage of Proposition 30, the CSU system
avoided a $250 million ‘trigger cut’ which subsequently
would have caused an increase in tution and a decrease
in enrollment.
In November 2012, CSU students celebrated the passage
of Proposition 30. CSU students received a tuition refund
of $249, which rolled tuition levels back to $5,472 per
year for full-time students.

SPOTLIGHT #4
CSSA coordinated a statewide voter registration campaign for the November
2012 national election. The association and its 23 member campuses
registered 31,372 student voters.
Community Engagment @CSU_CCE25: With 30,000 new registrants so far, @csustudents is breaking records in an effort to register 10% of CSU students to vote #savehighered

VOTER REGISTRATION
The association implemented voter mobilization efforts
that culminated on Election Day. Campus student
associations planned candidate debates, held rallies,
spoke to student groups and even contracted shuttles
to transport students to the polls.
CSSA participated in a panel discussion at
Sacramento State University on the impact of
Proposition 30 on California public higher education
in conjunction with CSU Sacramento President,
Alexander Gonzalez, and UC Davis Chancellor, Linda
Katehi.
CSSA Vice President for Legislative Affairs, Pedro
Ramirez noted, “The dramatic increase in registered
voters in California and the subsequent election
outcomes shows us two things: that Californians
value public education and that young people truly
can make a difference in an election.” >>
SPOTLIGHT #5

established as a resource to fund student-led
sustainability projects at CSU campuses.
