De Dutch Way..
Once in a
Lifetime
BY PHIL JOHNSON
T
he best ever! That is the opinion of
most Gay Games veterans. Furthermore, the athletes, artists and fans are
very upset because of the media's over
emphasis on the negative aspects of this
otherwise wondrous event. Sure there
were screw-ups, but there were screw-ups
at previous Gay Games, also. And screw ups even at the well financed Olympics.
For a change, lets examine the other side
of the coin. What made the 1998 Games
so much fun? Why (for eight days and
nights) was there a euphoria far surpassing that of previous Gay Games?
First, there was Amsterdam itself. In this
beautiful city, "gay" is simply not an issue.
Except for a few die-hard bigots, our people have achieved total acceptance.
Where else on Earth can that be said? And
what a liberating feeling it is to experience,
not special rights, but equal rights! Take it
from one whose hotel window overlooked
the noisy, unbounded celebration! Take it
from those who reverently lay flowers on
the world's only Homomonument everyday. Is it any wonder that Amsterdam is
considered 'The Gay Capital of Europe"?
Is it any wonder that the Amsterdam
Games had an exuberance greater than
any of the others?
Amsterdam is a small city with a population of less than one million. Tall, skinny
buildings and ancient cobblestone streets
are tightly contained within a series of
canals and dikes. Adding nearly a quarter
of a million gay men and women into such
a small area made closeness a necessity
and conversations with strangers easy.
The slogan "We are everywhere" certainly
rang true in Amsterdam.
"Since gays and lesbians are accepted,
why the need for a gay games," a Dutch
woman, in sincere innocence, asked. The
answer was simple ... "Because unlike the
Olympics, where most gays and lesbians
feel the need to hide their sexuality, Gay
Games athletes are free to be themselves.
More than that, they can celebrate who
they are, not what others want them to be."
Furthermore, the Gay Games, again
unlike the Olympics, are inclusive. Our
motto is "All who participate are winners."
Thus people of all abilities are encouraged
to participate and are given beautifully
frosted
silver
medals
for
doing
so. Interestingly, those who struggle and finish last often receive as much applause as
those who shattered world records. That
too, is liberating!
Texans, some of whom left 22 consecutive days of 100-plus temperatures behind,
were delighted with Amsterdam's springlike weather. Sleeping under a light blanket
with
the
windows
wide open
just
isn't
done during
August
in
the
Lone
Star State!
Although
we
were
warned
to
expect rain
two out of
every three
days
in
Holland,
there were
only a few
showers of
short duration. Obviously, "somebody" up
there likes us! Umbrellas and sweaters
proved to be a superfluous, pain-in-the-butt
burden.
And it wasn't that expensive either. With
TWT AUGUST 21 - AUGUST 27 1998
a bit of controlled spending, even those on
modest budgets could afford this once-ina-lifetime adventure.
While
in previous
Gay
Games,
Americans and Canadians dominated the
athletic events, in this - the first ever held
outside the continental limits of North
America - we made up less than 50%.
Nationalities from every continent were
well represented. How nice to talk to gays
and lesbians from all over the world.
If the guests were having fun, our hosts
were enjoying it too - and making money ...
lots of it! In an informal survey, I asked
policemen, shopkeepers and the Dutch
people strolling the canals if they would be
"glad" when the Games were over. They
responded with, "Happy? Why should we
be happy? We are having fun, too!"
Amsterdam's attitude toward nudity was
also liberating. Because of their handy
gadgets, European men pee in public.
Women do not. In Amsterdam, there are
open-for-everyone-to-see urinals for men
everywhere. (Unfortunately, women have
to suffer until they can make it to a facility
with doors.)
American swimmers, at the swim venue
in Amersfoot, were surprised to learn that
men and women share one big shower
room. Except for a few bashful types, it
was a liberating experience, a chance to
become intimate (but not all that intimate)
and make friends with those we don't often
see au natural.
And to add a little more to the nudity
experience of the Games, while "It's
Raining Men" was blasting out of the super
sound systems during the Gay Pride Canal
Parade, 150 good-looking (and mostly well
endowed) sailors pealed off all of their
. clothes on a float sponsored by the
Cockring Bar. They did it again with gusto
during the opening ceremonies celebration. The Dutch sure know how to
entertain!
As to the lesbian athletes, let's hand it to
the Dutch. They more than bent over backwards trying to achieve equal parity. While
only 43% were lesbian, it was a higher percentage than was achieved by any of the
Games so far.
Sadly, there will never be another Gay
Games in Amsterdam during our lifetimes.
Let us cherish our memories as we prepare for the future: Sydney in the year
2002. No doubt Gay Games VI will be
even bigger, but the Australians are going
to have a helluva hard time doing it better
than the Dutch way.

Joe Watts' The Group (Theatre Workshop)
and his merry band of players are finally
installed at the Paradox Theater in
Houston, where they plan to give Del
Shores' Sordid Lives a run for its money.
And that's no mean feat. For starters,
there's a cast of eleven. Most straight

of four or five. Seven is

here we have eleven count 'em - eleven

adds up to a potential

Watts is to be congratulated for bringing together such

As I said, the cast is quite capable, and
there's some good acting going on. Elva
Evans, as Latrelle, the only female character on stage who dresses as though she
had access to a Dillard's, plays her (relatively) sane character with a control and
sensibility that holds the piece together.
Ms. Jones plays her somewhat more
down-to-earth aunt with a matriarchal stoicism and manages to keep her wits about
her when everyone else is losing theirs.
Williams and Wiley go over the top as a
couple of trailer park jezabels with nothing
to lose but their Jenny Craig memberships,
and the boys - well, boys will be boys. "Ty"
is a more difficult role. Most of his stage
time is spent in monologues directed to his
unseen therapist, but delivered to the audience. His lack of interaction with the rest of
the cast until the play's final few minutes
weakens the audience's involvement with
him, but Dietrich carries it well.
The set piece is, of course, Brother
Boy's gay-curing session with Dr. Eve.
Kevin Reid as the cross-dressing Buddy
Boy is woman. Hear her roar. And Dr. Eve
is evil. Ignoring for the moment - if you can
- the sight-gag drag, Brother Boy's character alternates between victim and aggressor, comedy and pathos in a way that pulls
the audience in. But Dr. Eve's Gestapo tactics go too far, and for me the mood was
broken. That is the problem I had with this
play. I can't fault the acting, or particularly,
the direction, but the writing, yes I can. Too
many times the playwright goes for the
cheap laugh at the expense of his characters, until I couldn't decide whether I was
supposed to take them seriously at any
level or just go along with the caricature. I
was willing. It could have gone either way,
but not both. It might help you to know that
it played well in L.A., where the audience
will laugh at any line, no matter how lame,
so long as it's delivered in a Texas accent.
Still, it's a pleasant enough evening at
the theater, and one that merits your consideration.

Abusive
Relationships
an abusive relationship.
I encourage anyone that may think they
are in an abusive relationship to talk to
someone. You are not the bad person
because of what someone else chooses
to do to you. Stand tall. You have value
and a purpose to be here, and no one has
the right to make you feel otherwise. If a
person really loves you, they would not
control, degrade or talk ill of you to others.
Don't allow yourself to make their issues
your issues and keep you from being the
person you want and can be.
DearTWT,
Everyday, men and women who, for
whatever reason, continue to live in physically or mentally abusive relationships not
seeing the damage being caused to themselves. For fear of being alone, no place
to go, embarrassment, finances or whatever reason, gay men and women also
choose to stay with an abusive partner. I
know first hand because I was in a mentally abusive relationship for seven years.
When we moved to Dallas from Ohio, I
established a minor goal of my true freedom in being gay ... to be Mr. Prime
Choice Texas when I reached the age of
40. However, in what I know now as a
pattern of mental abuse, I was told I did
not have what was necessary to be any
type of titleholder. It was not until after the
countless lies, cheating and thefts that my
ex-"Iover" walked out on me during a
social gathering at our home. It was that
day, December 9, 1996, that I gained total
control and freedom from others' influence
in my life. Even now, he and his friends
(some who I thought were mine and others whom I have never met) try to remain
involved in my life by spreading rumors
about me as an individual. However, I am
a stronger individual committed to helping
men, women and children in our community and choose not to waste time on the
pettiness of an ex that cannot deal with or
let go of his control issues.
Thanks to the understanding, support
and belief of a wonderful man, JD
BUChert, I have realized the true value in
living life to its fullest and in support of

A Woman's
Perspective
Dear TWT,
I never really write to any publications,
but I wanted to commend you on the article printed in your July 17 issue. As a lesbian woman, I really didn't read your magazine until I recently read that issue at a
friend's house. The "Viewpoint: A
Woman's Perspective" touched on an
issue (breast cancer) that I feel is very
important, especially to the lesbian community. I have had many friends that have
dealt with breast cancer, and one that
unfortunately did not survive. I think
Jeannette Vaughn's words are very inspiring, and I wish we had more people in our
community that would speak out like her.
As I said, I didn't really read your magazine because I felt it was geared mainly
toward gay men. But you now have an
avid reader, and I hope to see more articles to which women can relate. Keep up
the good work with our community as a
whole.

The Sun enters prim Virgo this week causing us to take a stern look at our life's directions.
Life may still be a bowl of cherries, but for the next four weeks, we tend to count the pits.
Suggestion: Plant one and see what sprouts. Fuel that growth with strategic Mercury which
goes direct this week and active Mars which enters feisty Leo. Is it hot in here or what, kids?
LEO (July 24 - Aug. 23) You have a tiger in
your tank when direct Mercury and
extremely direct Mars are planted in your
own sign. Regal, proud Lions happily command attention so use the spotlight to your
advantage. You can play the temperamental diva or play it smart. Petty tantrums will
not achieve consensus. Let the fabulous
Sun in Virgo revitalize your Outlook as well
as your social life.
VIRGO (Aug. 24 - Sept. 23) The Sun in your
own sign signifies new beginnings and auspicious first meetings. Smart gay Virgos
overcome their innate shyness and ply their
trade in new terrain. Meet and greet,
cousin, while aggressive Mars and clever
Mercury blast your closet off its hinges. Step
Out, compadre! It's impossible to introduce
Yourself through a keyhole.
LIBRA (Sept. 24 - Oct. 23) Socially adept
qUeer Libras are in their element when flirtatious Mercury and irrepressible Mars
chug-a-Iug through Leo. Gather your compadres together for a gay old time and take
it to the limits. The Sun brightens any dark
corners in your life, so don't be afraid to
tackle what, at first glance, seems unattainable. Demons and gremlins shrink with
strong sunlight.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Much of what
You accomplish
now depends
upon
whether you can channel professional aims
into concrete action. Mercury and Mars
light a fire in your career and catapult you
into the starchamber. However, the Sun
(which impacts personal missions) is losing
its zest for corporate conquest as the week
progresses. Wouldn't you rather play with
friends than joust with enemies?
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 - Dec. 22) Proud
Archers are in their element when Mercury
and Mars light up Leo. Satisfy exotic cravings by either surrounding yourself with
spicy company or setting sail for foreign
venues. Keep a cold cold eye on career
when the Sun moves into serious Virgo.
Decide if you want to be leader of the pack
or one of the herd. Knowing Sags, you
won't blend in willingly ....
CAPRICORN (Dec. 23 - Jan. 20) Although
gay Goats are not known for their sexual
stamina, count your lucky stars this week,
when flirtatious Mercury sets your mind racing as zesty Mars revs up your engines and
increase your appetite. May hay while the
Sun shines. Too too soon, the bloom will
be off your rose, and you'll prefer to
expand your horizons, set on a course of
study or travel ... alone.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 - Feb. 19) Aqueerians
want to save the world, but take a step
back and concentrate
on saving one

New Board Brings Diversity of
Experience and Strong Non-Profit
and Business Backgrounds to
Dallas Organization
DALLAS - The Foundation for Human
Understanding recently elected six members to the Board of Directors and elected
Board officers to oversee the Dallas nonprofit organization. The new Board brings
a diverse wealth of knowledge in the areas
of business and non-profit experience.
New Board members include Linda Moore,
Jeff Adams, Oscar Monsibais Jr., Elaine
Vitt, Greg Davis and Joyce Gleason.
Linda Moore comes to the board as an
accomplished attorney with the firm of
Kuntz & Boensio, LLP. Linda was committee chairman of the American Cancer
Society's Survivors Day Fun Run/Walk,
and volunteers at the Lewisville Humane
Society.
Jeff Adams has been an associate at the
business and criminal defense law firm of
Meadows, Owens, Collier, Reed, Cousins
& Blau since 1992. Jeff volunteers with the
Dallas Bar Association's Legal Hospice
and American Cancer Society.
Oscar Monsibais, Jr. has a long history
of volunteering in Dallas, having served on
the boards of the Oak Lawn Community
Service,
the Shakespeare
Festival,
Pegasus Theater, the City of Dallas'
Zoning Board of Adjustment, City Plan
Commission, and was president of his Oak
Lawn Heights Neighborhood Association.
Elaine Vitt has 23 years experience in
newspaper and magazine publishing, promotions and marketing research. Her professional career includes working as a
writer and editor for American Way magazine, the Dallas Times Herald and the
Dallas Morning News. Elaine is married to
attorney Stephen Stapleton, and they have
two sons. The family has been closely
affected by AIDS as Steve's brother died of
the disease a few years ago, and the family has volunteered for the Gay and
Lesbian Community Center.
Greg Davis is the general manager of
WRR 101.1 FM where he is responsible for
PAGE 60
the management and operation of the
nation's only city-owned, commercial classical radio station. Greg has a great deal of
experience in the non-profit sector, having

the African
American community and he served on the
Black Tie Dinner Committee board of
directors in the 1980's.
Joyce Gleason is a mother of a gay,
HIV-positive son and is very active in the
gay and lesbian community. She is a
founder of Mother of Hope, a Plano-based

emphasis on youth. Mother's Hope is
working within the Plano Independent
School District to change attitudes about
gay and lesbian students. She and her
husband, Dave, are very active in PFLAG
[Parents, Family and Friends of Gays and
Lesbians] in which Dave is president of the
Dallas chapter.
Pam Clayton and Bill Brosius were reelected as president and vice president,
respectively. New officers to the Board of
Directors include Denny Maust as Vice
President, Christy Kinsler as secretary and
new member Jeff Adams as treasurer.
The
Foundation
for
Human
Understanding is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit
corporation that was established in 1983
by members of the board of the Dallas Gay
Alliance (now Dallas Gay and Lesbian
Alliance). Its original mission was to promote an understanding of sexual orientation and its implications in public policy,
and ultimately to end such discrimination.
As AIDS has become an increasingly
critical area of concern for the gay community, the Foundation's mission was expanded to encompass AIDS issues in order to
address the need for AIDS education, prevention, direct services and treatment.
The mission of the Foundation is to provide for the social, emotional and physical
well-being of people, primarily men and

women of the gay and lesbian community.
The Foundation together with the Dallas
Gay Alliance
established
the AIDS
Resource Center in 1985 as a program to
provide a wide range of programs to assist
the growing number of individuals and families impacted by AIDS.
The AIDS Resource Center has been
nationally recognized for the excellence of
its education programs and has made presentations at many major AIDS conferences. The Speakers Bureau provides
speakers on AIDS education to high
schools and COlleges, citizen and professional groups, churhces and businesses
throughout the North Texas area. Locally,
several large corporations have requested
teh Center's assitance in formulating policies addressing HIV infection among
employees. The education department
also operates the Phil Johnson Historic
Archives and Research Library (in connection with the Gay and Lesbian Community
Center).
The Food Pantry opened in 1985 to provide basic food and household items to
individuals with AIDS whose resources had
been exhausted on medication and such
basics as rent and medical care.
The Foundation established the NelsonTebedo Clinic for AIDS Research in 1989,
as an extension and part of the AIDS
Resource Center, to conduct clinical trials.
The clinic continues to conduct trials and
also utilizes a dental clinic which provides
full dental services. The clinic is now
known as the Nelson-Tebedo Community
Clinic.
In 1990, the Foundation opened the Gay
and Lesbian Community Center, to house
the administrative offices of the Foundation
and Education activities of the AIDS
Resource Center, and to serve as a meeting place for local organizations, for functions such as meetings, conferences and
even pot luck suppers.
Programs of the Community Center
include a Gay and Lesbian history and
information seminar series, a monthly
newsletter - Spectrum, the Phil Johnson
Gay and Lesbian Archives (which operates
with AIDS Research Library), a gay issues
hotline, monthly "movie night," as well as
periodic Community Group affairs.
Volunteers contribute over 50,000 hours
per year to the programs
of the
Foundation. For more information on the

HOUSTON TO HOST
MASS AFFIRMATION
CEREMONY
MCCR Assistant Pastor
Reverend Carolyn Mobley to
Conduct Commitment Ceremony
HOUSTON - As planners from around
the country organize the mass same-sex
marriage ceremony to be held during the
Millennium March on Washington in the
year 2000, two women in Houston have
been busy organizing their own version of
the mass wedding.
Jeannette Vaughn and Dot Thompson,
who have been in a committed relationship
for 28 years, have organized a "Mass
Affirmation Commitment Ceremony" to be
held tomorrow, August 22. The event is
being sponsored by the Imperial Court of
Houston with donations from various organizations around Houston. The evening's
event will benefit the Bering Community
Service Foundation Dental Clinic. Couples

from around the state are expected to
arrive and participate in a ceremony affirming their commitment to one another in
front of friends and families.
"Dot and I have been thinking of organizing something like this for quite a long
time. After seeing Rev. Troy Perry (founder
and moderator of the Universal Fellowship
of Metropolitan Community Churches) perform the ceremony at the March on
Washington in 1993, we decided that it
was something that we could here,"
explained Jeannette. "Since we're not performers, we need to come up with different
ideas to raise money for the community.
This will be a re-affirmation for us, as we
PAGE 61
made that commitment to each other when
we exchanged rings in 1970."
"I think it's a wonderful idea to do it
every six years or so," said Dot. "It's just a
wonderful thing."
The Assistant Pastor of the Metropolitan
Community Church of the Resurrection
[MCCR], Rev, Carolyn Mobley will conduct
the ceremony. "I think the our community
should do more of these ceremonies. It
blesses the union of two people and
thanks God. It also reinforces the commitment for a couple because they have performed this act and received the recognition and honor for their relationship,"
the fact that it demonstrates equality for
ourselves. It is a radical way of expressing
our equality."
The Mass Affirmation
Commitment
Ceremony will be held at the New Barn,
1100 Westheimer at 9 p.m. tomorrow,
saturday, August 22. The cost for the
event is $20 per couple and will benefit the
Bering Dental Clinic. Couples will receive a
certificate of commitment and a champagne toast. For more information, call
(713)747-5714.
Executive Board of Directors for PWACH.
"Strikes Against AIDS will be a celebration
of how far we've come in the past 12
years, but as care and treatment of those
with HIV changes, this is also a celebration
of where we're headed. we're gaining
momentum and looking forward to many
more successful years of providing for the
needs of those affected by HIV/AIDs."
With honorary chairpersons Reverend
George Foreman and Chelsi Smith-Blair,
Miss Universe 1995, at the helm, the
evening promises to be filled with the
sounds of strikes, spares and splits, as
guests enjoy live music and plenty of food.
In addition, guests can participate in a
silent auction featuring fabulous retailer gift
certificates, dining gift certificates and
pieces of art by local artists and more.
People with AIDS Coalition, Houston
was established
in 1986, initially to
address healing methods and alternative
therapies. The organization's focus has
since expanded to serve the needs and
concerns of the entire HIV/AIDS community. The Coalition is a non-profit 501 (c)(3)
organization that supports a wide range of
psychological programs for everyone in
the Houston EMS/HSDA affected by
HIV/AIDS.
Tickets for the event are $25 in advance
or $30 at the door. Tickets are available at
Palace Lanes or by calling the PWACH at
(713)522-5428.
Potential underwriters
interested in supporting the event can also
call the PWACH to participate as one of
four level sponsors.

My first foray into gay nightlife
could have easily discouraged me
from ever returning. The dilapidated, clapboard, two-story building at the corner of Main and
Cecil Streets had long been the
only gay bar in the small town of
70,000 where I grew up, and most
of the locals avoided it like the
plague. Except, of course, when a
gaggle of rednecks from the outlying farming community would
mix up a batch of hatred, using
equal parts of beer, testosterone
and pick-up truck, drive into the
city and spend the evening circling the block and terrorizing the
customers of the "Gaslight Inn."
I spent many evenings, sitting
nervously in my parked car, trying to muster the courage to
make the big walk up to the front
door. And on the evening that I
did, I was discouraged to find yet
another door (with no handle), a
two way mirror set into a framed
opening and an intercom.
"You DO know what kind of
establishment this is?" boomed
from the intercom.
Half-expecting the floor to
drop away and send me straight
to hell, I pressed the talk button
on the intercom and assured the
voice that I was at the right place.
Moments later, the door opened
and thirty-two heads turned in

unison to get a look at the newest
arrival. Clearly unimpressed,
everyone returned to their beers
and cocktails, and I slid into the
nearest stool at the bar and
ordered my first drink ever.
The third stool to my left was
occupied by an impossibly thin
and meticulously groomed Paul
Lynde type who immediately
struck up a conversation about
me with the bartender, both
behaving as if I simply weren't
there.
"Who's the new girl?"
"Never seen him before."
"What's he drinking?"
"Vodka-seven, twist of lime."
"Good. Send him a bourbon
and coke."
When the drink arrived, I began
to rethink everything. I couldn't
do this. I could not let my first
public gay encounter be played
out with Samantha Stevens'
screwy, warlock uncle.
"Thanks," I said to the bartender, "but I'm drinking vodka .."
"It's not for you," he said, "It's
for Gary."And with that, the
impossibly thin and meticulously
groomed Paul Lynde type finished
his cocktail, stumbled over to the
seat next to mine, sat and
resumed drinking without ever
having missed a beat.

On August 4, 1998, David Shell Martin peacefully passed away at the home of his caregiver
and friend, Gilbert Martinez. David was born July
24, 1962 in Dallas, Texas. He moved to
Galveston in 1986. He became involved with the
AIDS Coalition of Coastal Texas, Inc. and later
obtained a position on the Board of Directors.
He leaves behind his loving family who reside
in the Dallas area, many friends in Galveston and
throughout the state.
God bless you, sweet prince.
Richard B. Wilhite (B.J./Rick), age 40, of Dallas
passed away after a long and courageous battle
with AIDS. His fight was an inspiration to many.
B.J. led a long successful career with the Regis
Corp. until his retirement in 1994. Survived by his
loving companion of 13 years, Paul Gerard Kraft,
Jasmine and Sarah, mother Lena Mae Wilhite of
Lubbock and a loving family of friends. He was a
loving partner, devoted brother and compassionate friend who richly blessed the lives of those
around him. His family and friends are deeply
grateful to the staff of Times Square Jewelers,
and the countless health care providers who
helped for so long. A special thanks to his adopted family who were there until the end. In lieu of
flowers, B.J. requested that donations be made
to the Texas AIDS Ride, c/o Paul Kraft/Rider 354,

Billy Ray Green
August 23, 1994 - June 3, 1998
June 3, 1998, the world lost the most significant person that I have ever known. He was an
inspiration to all and a mentor to me. The last 17
years have been most incredible. I thanked God
everyday, when we were together, and now I
thank God for allowing me to have known this
person. He was my soul mate.
His love was unconditional. He was patient
and kind.... you were that special someone BRG.
Bill helped so many people of all communities.
He was always willing to go beyond for anyone
and everyone.
Billy leaves behind his mother and father,
cousins, a favorite niece, nephew, great-nephew
and a host of special friends. He also leaves
behind a great long time friend, Cathy, along with
her special pal, Scruffy.
He's up there, and I'm down here.
I will try to make the best of this.
Someday, I will come to join you,
to be a part of that special kiss.
Until then, you will always be in my heart.
Forever, all my love..
Ron
God bless you BRG
