Academics
• Elmont Memorial salutatorian was accepted into all 13 colleges
to which he applied, including all eight Ivy League schools.
• Elmont sophomore Maliya Rodriguez placed first in
microbiology at the New York State Science and Engineering
Fair. Rodriguez also placed second as an overall winner.
• Elmont’s Akanitoro Brown placed second in the environmental
category at the New York State Science and Engineering Fair.
Brown also received the RICOH Sustainable Development
Award.
• Elmont senior Harold Ekeh placed third in cellular and
molecular biology category at the New York State Science and
Engineering Fair.
• Floral Park senior Anna Christ has been appointed to the
United States Air Force Academy as a member of the Class of
2019.
• Floral Park freshman Kirra Clark was presented with
the Woman of Distinction Award by the Jamaica Square
Improvement League.
• Floral Park junior Semini Jayasinghe was invited to attend the
Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Boston, Massachusetts.
• 10 Floral Park students participated in the General Federation
of Women’s Clubs-Island-Metro District Cultural Arts Day,
sponsored by the Junior Women’s Club of Bellerose.
• Floral Park’s Olivia Lanning placed first in Business
Calculations and Business Law at the Future Business Leaders
of America spring district meeting at Molloy College.
• Floral Park’s Jennifer Seuling placed first in the job interview
category at the Future Business Leaders of America spring
district meeting at Molloy College.
• The Jamaica Square Civic Association honored Floral Park
Principal Dr. Kathleen Sottile as a Woman of Distinction in
recognition of Women’s History Month.
• Advanced Placement students from Floral Park attended the
Evaluation of Presidential Leadership Symposium for High
School Students at Hofstra University.
• Floral Park’s Thomas Kenna was invited to attend the AllAmerican Model United Nations Delegation in Beijing, China
and Hyderabad, India.
• 15 Floral Park students participated in the High School Heroes
Program sponsored by Junior Achievement.
• H. Frank Carey students Michael Kadnar and Nicholas
Zaromatidis were acknowledged with character awards in
February.
• H. Frank Carey students named Josephine Accetturi and Ryan
Hensley Seniors of the Month for February.
• H. Frank Carey’s Kacie Candela was named Outstanding
Delegate in the World Health Organization Committee at the
Hofstra University Model United Nations Conference.

• New Hyde Park’s Jaime DeVita won a silver medal at the Italian
Poetry Contest sponsored by the American Association of

• New Hyde Park’s Eshraq Islam, Gautam Nayyar and Carolyn
Wilson participated in Stony Brook University’s Annual Protein
Challenge.
• New Hyde Park senior Gautam Nayyar presented his research
on chronic lymphocytic leukemia at the Long Island Science
and Engineering Fair.
• New Hyde Park students Aisha Abdelhamin, Megha Gopal,
Nicole Joseph, Pranav Rengeri and Vishwajit Sharma placed
fourth at the Math Olympiads at Kellenberg Memorial High
School. Sharma also placed second out of 150 participants in
the individual round.
• Sewanhaka’s Robotics Club placed fifth in the FIRST Tech
Challenge Regional Championship Tournament. The team also
advanced to the World Championship competition.
• Students and chaperones from Shenzhen Experimental School
#2 in Shenzhen, China, and Quanzhou #7 High School in
Fujian, China, visited Sewanhaka High School.
• Members of Sewanhaka’s Family, Career and Community
Leaders of America attended the annual New York State
Leadership Conference in Syracuse.
• Sewanhaka’s Tri-M chapter inducted 68 members during a
ceremony on March 11.
• Three students from Sewanhaka competed at the Long Island
Science and Engineering Fair in February. Student Sidney St.
Hillaire also competed in round two of the competition on
March 12.
• More than 200 students participated in the 22nd annual Lee
Marcus Invitational Sewanhaka Intra-District Model United
Nations Conference.

Arts
• H. Frank Carey senior Ralph Sepe won the Emerging
Filmmaker Award at this year’s Queens World Film Festival.
• H. Frank Carey Clipper photographer Thomas Raggio won
second place for photography at Adelphi University’s Press
Day.
• New Hyde Park’s Ashley Thomas was the winner of the World
Languages Honor Society’s annual poster contest.
• New Hyde Park’s Nicole Campbell was the winner of the Town
of North Hempstead Earth Day Birthday T-Shirt contest.
• Sewanhaka freshman Ariana Yarna was accepted into the NYU
Young Playwright Program.
• Members of the district’s Marching Band performed at the St.
Patrick’s Day Parade in New York City.
• The district’s second annual Sewanha-Con event was well
attended by students across the district.
• The artwork of 22 district students was selected to be displayed
at the central administration building.
• District students participated in the NYSSMA Evaluation
Festival held at New Hyde Park High School. Congratulations
to Bryan Apaza, Ann Grimshaw, Fred Grimshaw, Luke
Lelay, Max Lou, Alicia Manjila, Jailene Ramsaroop, Prachi
Shah, Daniel Son and Christian Tse for receiving a rating of
Outstanding or Excellent; Frank Bachhuber, Victoria Bialczak,
Anthony DeCola, Nathan Edwards, Chris Fink, Rena Fukuda,
Sachin Jacob, Kristine Leung, Brianna Mastandrea, Sophie
Ouyang and Samantha Zebitsch for receiving a rating of “A” or
“A+.” Other recognitions were given to student Sara Salomon
for earning a 99 out of 100 on her Level VI solo; Sean Hong
for outstanding ratings on two different instruments; and
Daniel McGuigan, who earned a perfect score on his
Level V solo.
Community Service
• Elmont Memorial collected 109 pints of blood for Long Island
Blood Services during their March blood drive. The school
ranks within the top seven in donations in Long Island.
• Elmont Memorial’s Key Club and Key Builders collected
supplies for Hempstead residents displaced by a fire.
• Floral Park Memorial’s Heart for Fashion 2 raised more than
$12,000 for genetic research.
• Floral Park Memorial teachers raised money for the boys
lacrosse team and Ethan Demmers during a faculty basketball
game.

• H. Frank Carey seniors in Mike Cartolano’s Media Arts class
honored several Carey alumni and staff who served in the
armed forces.
• H. Frank Carey students raised money for Kids Need More to
benefit a 16-year-old girl with a brain tumor.
• New Hyde Park Memorial’s Builders Club raised $1,104 for
the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Shamrock Against
Dystrophy program.
• A playground in Alaminos City, located in Pangasinan,
Philippines, will bear the name of New Hyde Park Memorial
thanks to a fundraiser held by the school’s Key Club.
• Faculty and students from New Hyde Park Memorial raised
$2,000 for Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy during Faculty
Feud.
• Sewanhaka seventh-graders participated in a Math-A-Thon and
raised $1,097 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
• Sewanhaka’s Key Club collected toiletries for veterans
throughout March.
Athletics
• Elmont’s girls varsity basketball team defeated Oceanside in the
Nassau County quarterfinals.
• Elmont varsity basketball player Noelle Dixon was named an
All-Conference athlete.
• Elmont varsity basketball players Arielle Pierre and Zhaneia
Thybulle were named All-Class players.
• Elmont varsity basketball players Monique Joseph and Kem
Nwabudu were named All-County players. Joseph was also
named Conference Player of the Year.
• Floral Park’s boys varsity basketball team played in the Nassau
County Finals on March 7.
• Several Sewanhaka wrestlers qualified to participate in the
Nassau County Tournament. Daniel Gianotti placed fourth and
earned All-County honors. Jesse Lino and Kevin Ramirez were
named All-Conference players.
Elmont’s girls varsity basketball team defeated Oceanside in the quarterfinals.
