Forty Years and
Counting
When it comes to foundations, it’s easy to count the
money. But it’s really the number of people who have
been positively affected that is the preeminent issue in any
humanitarian quest.
So it is with the utmost pleasure that we report the
National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation has
witnessed 40 years of phenomenal achievements.
Robert P. Mallon
Chairman of the
Board of Trustees
More than 2.5 million people have received
cardiopulmonary resuscitation training as a result of CPR
manikins presented to organizations in all 50 states over these past 40 years.
Children with disabilities and wounded veterans have been the recipients of highly
trained assistance dogs. Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) has been a
superb organization to be associated with in this grand effort.
More than 8,700 new-car and -truck dealership employees have received financial
support from the Emergency Relief Fund after such devastating natural disasters
as hurricanes Andrew, Katrina and Sandy.
More than 120 spouses and children of victims of the terrorist attacks of
September 11, 2001, have received scholarship grants as a result of the
Foundation’s participation with Scholarship America.
So whom do we thank? The bulk of our gratitude goes to the new-car and -truck
dealer members of NADA, their state and metro associations, and the National
Automobile Dealers Association itself! And how are we looking to help in
the next 40 years?
The Ambassadors program alone will one day generate more than $500,000 of gifts
to worthy organizations in all 50 states and the District of Columbia—annually! We’re
on our way to achieving that!
The next 40 years are sure to be greater because of the past 40.
To so many of you, thank you for your support and “Godspeed!”

Each year, more than $250,000 in

McCARTHY MEMORIAL FUND
Canine Companions
I
n 2014, Joe Verde, president of
the Joe Verde Group in San Juan
Capistrano, Calif., was the top
bidder on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle
auctioned at the NADA convention
in New Orleans.
Verde’s winning bid of $27,000, which
was donated by ADESA, went to benefit
the Wounded Veterans Initiative of
Canine Companions for Independence
(CCI). CCI trains companion dogs
for wounded veterans, a cause long
supported by the nation’s new-car
and -truck dealers.
“These wounded veterans give so
much. We really appreciate the NADA
Foundation for making us aware of
10

Canine Companions and for giving us
the opportunity to contribute to such
a worthy cause,” said Verde, an Army
veteran who served in Vietnam.
This is the third year ADESA has held a
live auction at the NADA convention.
Proceeds from the auction and the
grant go to the NADA Foundation’s
Frank E. McCarthy Memorial Fund, in
whose name the CCI donation is made.
McCarthy was chief executive of NADA
from 1968 to 2001.
Since 2002, the NADA Foundation’s
Frank E. Memorial Fund has contributed
$250,000 to Canine Companions for
Independence. McCarthy served as
NADA president for more than 30 years.

T
he Joseph J. Sanchez Memorial
Fund was established in 1985
to honor the memory of the
former vice president and general
manager of Oldsmobile Division of
General Motors and first president of the
Saturn Corporation. Sanchez overcame
many hardships, including childhood
polio, to achieve great success in the
auto industry.
Students traditionally have received
$7,000 for emergency needs at four
accredited private, independent colleges
or universities in each of the NADA’s
four regions, for an annual grant total of
$28,000. Each school selects the student
recipients based on their own criteria.
To date, a total of $550,000 has been
donated in Sanchez’s memory.
J
ohn P. Winston, Sr., the late
corporate secretary of NADA,
was an accomplished attorney
dedicated to ethical practices and a
man of deep religious conviction and
devotion to his family. In his memory,
the John P. Winston, Sr., Memorial Fund
was established in 1990 for the study of
ethics discipline.
Like the Sanchez fund, $7,000 grants are
presented to four private independent
colleges or universities in the four NADA
regions each year. To date, the Winston
Fund has donated $518,000.
