The 2015-2016 academic year was filled with many accomplishments for our students. We have to say goodbye to another graduating class of talented and intelligent young men. These young men have been accepted into prestigious universities such as Toronto, York, Ryerson, Waterloo, Ottawa and McGill. While wishing them the best for their future endeavors, we also want to look back on a successful year. This year was especially rewarding for our wrestling team. Our wrestling team under the auspices of their coaches Mr. Yasin Kaya and Mr. Brock Curtis, won 15 gold medals, 21 silver medals and 20 bronze medals. We are proud to announce our 2015/2016 Math team’s success at the Caribou Math Contest! Grade 9 student Mustafa Mesrefoglu placed 2nd in Ontario, 5th in Canada, and 6th in the world! The rest of the Math team was also successful placing in the province’s first 100. This year the Nile Relief Club traveled to Haiti for some philanthropy. They visited 3 orphanages in total. To their surprise, they discovered that it didn’t take much to make them happy. Just a small piece of candy put the biggest smile on each youngster’s face. It was a meaningful trip and Nile plans to make it a regular visit. All in all it was a successful and memorable year. We hope that next year will bring more adventure and success. They put in countless hours of dedicated after-school studying 3 times a week with the guidance of their teacher Mr. Seyfullah. They participated in many competitions throughout the school year including: Caribou, Pascal, Kangaroo, Euclid, Fryer, Galois, Hypatia and Gauss. All the hard work and studying paid off with their success in the Caribou and Pascal Math Contests. In the Pascal Math Contest, the team placed 6th on the Toronto Team Honour Roll. Nureddin Burak Atalan, Ismet Taspinar, and Mustafa Yeniceri made it on to the Toronto Student Honour Roll. Mustafa Mesreofglu placed on the Ontario Students Honour Roll. In the November Caribou Contest Mustafa Mesrefoglu placed 2nd in Ontario, 5th in Canada, and 6th in the world. In the April contest, Mustafa placed 3rd in Ontario, 8th in Canada, and 9th in the world. The Math Team was also successful placing in Canada’s first 100 in both contests. ANNUAL SPELLING BEE CHAMPION! In April, the grade 7 and 8 classes participated in our Annual Spelling Bee. Each student had the opportunity to take the stand and prove they deserved to become Nile’s Spelling Bee Champion. The competition was fierce as both classes performed exceptionally well. Our third place prize went to Mohamed Dirie in grade 8, our second place prize went to Dhaha Ahmed also in grade 8, and finally our first place prize went to Ali Yildiz in grade 7. SUCCESS IN ROBOTICS Nile Academy is proud to announce that it’s 20152016 Robotics Team won the Semi-Final Cup at the UOIT Engineering Robotics Competition! Their dedication to their music was indisputable, as they got together every Tuesday to work on their music. By the end of the school year they learned Surfin’ Safari and House of the Rising Sun. AMAZING ADVENTURES: NILE FIELD TRIPS BLAST OFF! TRIP TO THE ONTARIO SCIENCE CENTRE On May 11th, Mr. Cure and Mr. Howard took our grade 9 students to the Ontario Science Centre. They explored the planetarium and all its interesting contraptions. In the IMAX Theater Dome they watched “A Beautiful Planet” where they blasted off into space to get a view of our world from afar. The IMAX Dome provided a view of the galaxy as if they were aboard the NASA space station. Our students and teachers had the opportunity to learn about the severe impact we as humans have on planet earth. By the end of the trip everyone felt increasingly mindful of their ecological footprint and further motivated to care for our planet. GEOCACHING WITH MR. BOWRING ESL classes made their way into Rowntree Mills Park to hunt for Geocaches while enjoying nature and the sunshine. Geocaching is a sport that is part treasure hunt, part technology, and part hiking. Students used cellphones with the Geocaching App to locate hidden ‘caches’. Hiking through the park, often through the forest, students arrived at the GPS coordinates and hunted around for small, concealed jars. Inside each cache is a logbook the students signed. They also updated the App, marking the cache found and even including a photo. It was nice way to enjoy the change in weather and experience an activity the students had just read about in their school work. NILE Voice 2016 NILEInformer2016-A4.indd 4 3 6/15/2016 11:49:00 PM THE WRESTLING TEAM’S TRIP TO CALGARY The Nile Leopards travelled west to Calgary Alberta to participate in the 2016 Cadet & Juvenile Canadian Championships. CHANGE YOUR WORLD 2016 Another conference has come and gone and it was great to see so many young people who are interested and engaged in making their world a better place. This was our second year at the conference, and our first year attending it at York University. For some of the students it was their first look at a university and it was cool to have them get a first-hand look at a possible post-secondary destination. Some of the more impactful student workshops revolved around human rights, the concept of consent, or taking an active role in making a difference in environmental protection. Teachers had their own schedule of workshops, which included discussions about creating videos, creating partnerships with students in solving issues, and tools and strategies that can be used in the classroom to help teachers and students talk about important global issues. NILE Voice 2016 NILEInformer2016-A4.indd 14 13 6/15/2016 11:49:33 PM NILE RELIEF CLUB TRIP TO HAITI & MIAMI In April 2016, the Nile Relief Club traveled to Haiti and Miami for some philanthropy and fun. They began their trip in Haiti where they visited 3 different orphanages. They learned that after the devastating hurricane in 2010, many children were left without family. As a result, there are as many as 100 orphanages in Haiti. The country is overpopulated, reaching up to 4 million people in the capitol city alone. The roads make it very difficult to travel, since they have been reduced to rubble. In short, the country is in dire need of support and the Nile Relief Club traveled there provide as much assistance as they could. Mr. Mustafa Cure, Hasan Ercan, Utku Pekova, and Huseyin Celtikoglu were there to help. They visited 3 orphanages in total; one for girls, and two for both boys and girls. They quickly learned that it didn’t take much to make a child happy. Just a small piece of candy put the biggest smile on each youngster’s face. They gave them clothing, and financial aid raised from fundraisers held by their school. Overall, the trip was an enlightening one, and Nile plans to make it a regular visit. After their time spent in Haiti, the Relief Club stopped in Miami for a day of fun. They spent time soaking up the sun on the beach, and catching waves in the ocean. 14 NILE Voice 2016 NILEInformer2016-A4.indd 15 6/15/2016 11:49:41 PM GREAT FOOD AND GREAT COMPANY! Every week, local members of our community have been generously hosting Nile students for breakfast. Students have had the opportunity to strengthen their bond with local families through healthy food and quality time. Many thanks to the generous families who welcome us into their homes! SPIRIT WEEK 2015 We had so much excitement about Spirit Week this year, we decided to extend it to three weeks! When we initially began, our goal was to raise $500 for the SickKids Foundation. Thanks to our passionate and dedicated students, we were not only able to beat our original goal, but we more than doubled it! We raised a whopping total of $1272.22 in donations–10 times the amount of funds we raised last year! The source of the funds raised have been a result of some exciting events happening around the school. We have had some very successful buy out periods which included movie screenings, soccer and basketball tournaments, and video arcades. The event that generated the most revenue was the Besiktas vs Galatasaray game where students paid $5 to watch the soccer match. In that one event, we were able to raise over $450! Other events that have also been successful include the lunchtime DJ, and the snack trolley. Spirit Week wouldn’t have been a success without all the time and effort Mr. Barter put into planning and organizing. Thanks Mr. Barter! NILE Voice 2016 NILEInformer2016-A4.indd 16 15 6/15/2016 11:49:45 PM GUEST SPEAKER TORONTO POLICE PRESENTATION Officer Habibullah from the Toronto Police visited our students to discuss important matters surrounding drugs as well as other issues in our community. Our students were able to ask questions and discuss aspects of the law surrounding drug legislation. They also learned about safety and the many ways the police department protects and aids the community. Students had the opportunity to learn about the career path of a local law enforcement officer, and thus develop a healthy perspective of the job. They fought to prove their athletic dominance here at Nile Academy. In American Gladiator Jousting, students had to simultaneously master balance and strength, or otherwise be knocked off the pedestal by their opponent. In the boxing ring, students had to learn to take a hit from massive inflatable boxing gloves, or be boinked out of the ring. Bubble soccer was a true testament to ones control of their center of gravity. If it was lacking, they may have found themselves upside down! The Carnival was a test to each person’s speed, agility, and strength, and only the most dexterous were successful! 18 NILE Voice 2016 NILEInformer2016-A4.indd 19 6/15/2016 11:49:49 PM MEET THE NILE LEOPARDS 2015-2016 Nile Academy Wrestling Team 1) Hasan Dogan (Team Captain) 2) Talha Saruhan (Team Captain) 3) Bora Kansiray 4) Berkay Oral 5) Atalay Alpersoy 6) Berfend Kaya 7) Berkay Sahin 8) Egehan Usluer 9) Bahadir Celik 10) Mehmet Erkan 11) Egemen Isik 12) Akif Ocak 13) Omer Kartal 14) Cebrail Durna 15) Halil Caliskan Freestyle Wrestling Coach: MR.
