For more than two decades, this team worked
together to build the valley’s most successful
luxury real estate firm. Now they’re doing it for
themselves, with a new name but the same can-do
attitude: No egos. No massive corporations. No
reason to meet some arbitrary benchmark. Just
people with a passion for making your next search,
sale, rental, or vacation perfect in every way.

ASPEN SANTA FE BALLET
FROM THE
DIRECTORS
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the theater as we mark Aspen Santa Fe Ballet’s 20th Anniversary
season—a milestone worthy of serious celebration!
We’ve refreshed our artistic palate this year with new dancers, new
choreographers, and an unprecedented number of new ballets joining
our repertoire. Commissioned works by the dynamic Cayetano Soto and
newcomer Fernando Melo of Brazil, as well as acquisitions from dance
legend Jiří Kylián and Alejandro Cerrudo of Spain, will invigorate your senses
and ignite your imagination. Our team of devoted dance artists—on whom
these choreographers will realize their nuanced visions—includes several
new faces to augment the core group of veterans.
The good energy of this anniversary season will propel us on the
road for a rich lineup of stellar engagements across the globe. ASFB is
honored to launch a multi-year partnership as Artist-in-Residence at the
beautiful Valley Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles, as well as make our
seventh appearance at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival where we now have
deep artistic roots.
Juan Siddi Flamenco Santa Fe, under ASFB’s management, is increasingly
gaining national recognition as evidenced by upcoming tour performances
this season in California and Hawaii. Prestigious debuts also await JSFSF at
both the Joyce Theater in New York City and at Jacob’s Pillow, revered stages
that are a dance company’s dream.
By professional necessity our focus seems perpetually fixed on the future.
However, it seems a fitting moment to reflect upon ASFB Founder Bebe
Schweppe’s early commitment to dance education, a value that sits at the
heart of our organization. The School of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet has blossomed
from a small one-room studio into a comprehensive dance training and
outreach curriculum that reaches hundreds of children across two states.
The School is our anchor; it gives us permanence and it represents our art
form’s best hope for cultural continuance.
We are most grateful to the individuals, corporate and media sponsors,
foundations, and government agencies listed in this book who have
graciously supported ASFB year after year. In particular, Alpine Bank,
Hotel Jerome, and Aspen Club and Spa’s support dates back almost to the
beginning of the organization. While our donors do not appear on stage,
our curtain would not rise without their generosity.
PHOTO: ROSALIE O’CONNOR
Most importantly, we could not have reached this milestone without you,
our audience! Your applause, passion, and support fuels our organization as
we nurture choreographers, inspire dancers, educate children, and enrich
our communities through Aspen Santa Fe Ballet’s uniquely diversified menu
of contemporary classical ballet, flamenco, education, dance presentation,
community outreach, and Folkloric dance.
Please join us in celebration!

Twenty years ago, Bebe Schweppe, former dancer and founder of the Aspen Ballet
School, posed a simple, yet visionary question to two young dancers, Jean-Philippe
Malaty and Tom Mossbrucker: Could Aspen ever become a significant player on the
national dance scene? Then, in a daring move, she invited the two men to join her and
develop a dance company in Aspen.
The impetus for this new partnership sprang from a serendipitous meeting at a
conference. “I met Jean-Philippe first,” remembers Schweppe. “Both he and Tom were
there dancing with the Joffrey Ballet and we just had a blast. The relationship was born
out of that kind of fun.” The new team was venturing into uncharted territory. There

Forming identity
A choreographic incubator
“One thing we remember is that we didn’t feel pressure,” said
Mossbrucker. “We feel much more pressure now than when we
started! We were so isolated and no one was paying attention to
us. We didn’t take ourselves too seriously either; we were just doing
work that interested us, staging works we ourselves wanted to see.”
Fundamental to Aspen Santa Fe Ballet’s distinctiveness is the fertile
creative environment it provides for choreographers; some call it
a dance incubator. Dance makers, eager to renew themselves in
Aspen’s natural green setting, enjoy creative freedom and unrushed
studio hours with top-notch, wholesome, collaborative dancers.
The company’s name was unknown, its talent untested. But youthful
vigor propelled its progress. In little time, a distinct aesthetic
emerged—a blend of European sophistication with the daring spirit
of the American West. Its vivid personality, athletic dancers, and
innovative repertoire are Aspen Santa Fe Ballet hallmarks, visible
both at home and on tour.
Mossbrucker remembers an early influence in Dwight Rhoden, the
company’s first commissioned choreographer: “The dancers were
dramatically different after working for six weeks with Dwight. We
knew at that point that creating challenging new work was going
to be important.”
Dancers come first
From the beginning, ASFB held a strong core commitment to its
dancers, a modest troupe numbering only seven. Small-city life,
albeit in two arts-rich cities, required a collaborative team spirit.
“The early years were an exciting time of building with a group
of very motivated dancers. We fed off each other’s energy,” said
Mossbrucker.
The company’s unprecedented employment packages—52-week
contracts, health benefits, and matching retirement—remain a
rarity in the dance field. Attracted by the opportunity to perform
in rigorous, exploratory new ballets, dancers remained loyal for
multiple seasons with several careers exceeding 15 years. The
absence of frequent dancer turnover contributed to ASFB’s stable
growth. To this day, company alumni may be found instructing in
the school, coaching repertoire, and on the management team.
20 | www.aspensantafeballet.com
The company soon developed a pipeline for cutting-edge European
choreography, although this aesthetic actually had American roots.
“The company aesthetic began to evolve with Nicolo [Fonte],”
explains Mossbrucker. “He played a key role. He is Brooklyn-born,
but brought a distinct European sensibility from his years dancing
abroad—we didn’t have it before he choreographed for us. Working
with Nicolo whetted our appetites for more of a certain kind of work.”
Choreographers, just like dancers, bonded with Aspen Santa Fe
Ballet. Commissions functioned as a springboard for significant
careers, as several choreographers, including Fonte, transitioned to
artistic positions with renowned dance companies. Many maintain
fruitful ties to Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, where long-lasting relationships
with choreographers is a company hallmark.

ASPEN SANTA FE BALLET
ALLET
HISTORY
Ballet’s dynamic story in the American West
In 1996 Aspen Santa Fe Ballet Founder Bebe Schweppe invited Tom
Mossbrucker and Jean-Philippe Malaty to create a ballet company
in Aspen. A unique multidimensional arts organization developed
rapidly from the ballet school Schweppe had established in the
Rocky Mountains.
“Bebe’s vision for Aspen to have its own ballet company was the
project of a lifetime,” says Malaty, ASFB’s Executive Director. “We
embarked together on a serendipitous adventure. Twenty years
later, the connection between the dancers and our two communities
is deep and inextricable.”
Forging a new frontier
The company began modestly with seven dancers. Growth was
organic. Friends in the field – Gerald Arpino, Trey McIntyre, Septime
Webre, Dwight Rhoden – offered start-up repertoire. Moses
Pendleton’s highly popular Noir Blanc was a seminal event for the
young ASFB. It launched a tradition of commissioning new works.
An open, exploratory style emerged as Mossbrucker and
Malaty tapped the creative scene in Europe
where classical ballet was breaking
from
its
boundaries.
The
athletic
and adventurous
American dancers
found themselves
at a crossroads of
dance history. The divide between ballet and modern dance was
dissolving.
Innovative business model
In 2000 the Aspen, Colorado-based ballet company forged a dualcity relationship with Santa Fe, New Mexico, broadening its scope
and lending crucial revenue diversification. Under this hybrid
business model, a roster of arts activities takes wing, year-round, in
both cities. Performance, education, presentation and community
outreach all join in the mix. Within this innovative structure, ASFB
approaches its 20th anniversary season in 2015-16.
New commissions
ASFB’s mission places highest priority on developing new
choreography and nurturing relationships with emerging
choreographers. The company fostered the early careers of now indemand global dance makers like Nicolo Fonte (nine commissioned
Fonte works in the ASFB repertoire), Jorma Elo (three commissioned
Elo works), Edwaard Liang, Jacopo Godani, Helen Pickett, Cayetano
Soto, Alejandro Cerrudo and others. Works by late 20th century
masters – William Forsythe, Jiří Kylián, Twyla Tharp – round out the
repertoire.
“We value building relationships with choreographers who become
integral to the company. The natural beauty of our surroundings
has a profound impact on creativity and our choreographers find
it inspiring to create here,” says Mossbrucker, ASFB’s artistic director.
National reputation
Based for twenty years in the American West, ASFB now sits at the
vanguard of its field, brandishing a strong national reputation.
Repeat engagements at the American Dance Festival, Harris Theater
for Music and Dance, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Joyce Theater,
The Kennedy Center, Saratoga Performing Arts Center, and Wolf Trap
testify to the company’s popularity and ability to please audiences.
Overseas invitations arrived and ASFB embarked on international
tours to Brazil, Canada, France, Greece, Guatemala, Israel, Italy
and Russia. Premier funders – National Endowment for the Arts,
New England Foundation for the Arts / National Dance Project,
Joyce Foundation, Shubert Foundation, Wolf Trap Foundation,
Jerome Robbins Foundation and Princess Grace Foundation – have
supported ASFB’s growth.
Flamenco joins the fold
In January 2014, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet announced with pride
the addition of Juan Siddi Flamenco Santa Fe under its arts
management umbrella. The collaboration with the seven-year old
flamenco company provides the benefits of economies of scale and
other business synergies, as well as a simpatico artistic alliance. The
addition of Juan Siddi Flamenco Santa Fe is a further expression
of ASFB’s core mission. It represents an opportunity to celebrate
cultural heritage, expand diversity, serve as a catalyst for new
ventures, and play a role in fortifying a heritage art form.
Accolades into the future
Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet enters a third
decade with an undiminished creative drive. New dancers, new
dance voices, and a solid infrastructure characterize the company.
The ever-evolving Aspen Santa Fe Ballet looks to a bright future with
energy and optimism.

DIRECTOR
BIOGRAPHIES
JEAN-PHILIPPE MALATY, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
was born in the Basque region of France. After receiving his baccalaureate in dance, he accepted
scholarships to study at Mudra, Maurice Béjart’s school in Brussels, and at John Cranko’s ballet
academy in Stuttgart. Invited by acclaimed instructor David Howard to study in New York,
Jean-Philippe traveled to America under Howard’s tutelage. Jean-Philippe’s performance
career began with Joffrey II. He also danced as a guest artist with Los Angeles Classical Ballet,
Ballet Hispanico, and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Jean-Philippe segued from the stage to an
administrative role while still in his twenties. A key member of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet’s startup team, Jean-Philippe has been central to developing the company’s unique dual-citybased hybrid business model. He directs operations in two locations, overseeing a $4 million
budget that he allocates to the company, two schools, an esteemed presenting series, and
an award-winning folkloric outreach program. Jean-Philippe’s first love is teaching and, when
his schedule permits, he conducts master classes at schools and universities. He has served
on panels for the Colorado Council for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. In
2013, Jean-Philippe shared an honor with Artistic Director Tom Mossbrucker when the Santa
Fe Community Foundation bestowed its Piñon Award on the company. In 2012, the Denver
Bonfils-Stanton Foundation granted Jean-Philippe a Livingston Fellowship in recognition of
his significant leadership role in Colorado’s non-profit sector. In 2010, in recognition of ASFB’s
contribution to the field of dance, Jean-Philippe and Tom were honored with the Joyce Theater
Foundation Award. A naturalized U.S. citizen, Jean-Philippe is proud to have forged a company
alive with American energy, invention, and eclecticism.
“Dance is a celebration of the human spirit, and not a celebration of
steps. Here at Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, we foster the spirit and the love
of dance.”
– Jean-Philippe Malaty
TOM MOSSBRUCKER, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
has been artistic director of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet since 1996. For the past twenty years Tom
has built a prestigious arts organization sharing two homes in Aspen and Santa Fe. In his role
as artistic director, Tom cultivates highly sophisticated and challenging works of contemporary
ballet. His shining achievement is ASFB’s roster of 31 ballets created on commission by leading
global choreographers. Tom began to dance at age four, studying tap in his hometown of
Tacoma, Washington. He pursued classical ballet training at the School of American Ballet and
Joffrey Ballet School. His twenty years as a principal dancer with the Joffrey Ballet, performing
in over 70 ballets under the direct coaching of founders Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino,
coincided with a period of high artistic achievement for the company. Tom danced in ballets
by great twentieth century choreographers: Fredrick Ashton, George Balanchine, Laura Dean,
William Forsythe, Jiří Kylián, Mark Morris, Paul Taylor, and Twyla Tharp. Signature roles included
Iago in Jose Limon’s The Moor’s Pavane; Champion Roper in Agnes DeMille’s Rodeo; Billy in
Eugene Loring’s Billy the Kid; and Romeo in John Cranko’s Romeo and Juliet. It is this rich dance
background that Tom brings to coaching dancers today. In 2013, Tom shared an honor with
Executive Director Jean-Philippe Malaty when the Santa Fe Community Foundation bestowed
its Piñon Award on the company. In 2010, in recognition of ASFB’s contribution to the field
of dance, Tom and Jean-Philippe were honored with the Joyce Theater Foundation Award. A
former board member of Dance USA, Tom currently serves on the board of The Gerald Arpino
and Robert Joffrey Foundation.
“We strive for continuity and enjoy bringing choreographers back to
create second and third works...to us that is success.”

Schweppe taught ballet in a small Aspen studio, the school has expanded to
year-round classes in Aspen, Basalt, Carbondale, Glenwood Springs, Santa Fe, and
Eldorado, teaching more than 485 students of all ages.
Offering a curriculum of ballet, jazz, and modern dance, The School of Aspen
Santa Fe Ballet provides quality training for the pre-professional student as well
as the recreational dancer, and has guided many young dancers into professional
careers. The school fosters a supportive environment that enhances confidence
and accomplishment as well as technique and artistry. Students perform in an
annual spring recital and alongside ASFB’s professional dancers in The Nutcracker.
To ensure that every child who wishes to dance can do so, ASFB awards over
$30,000 in financial need-based scholarships every year.

ASFB’s pioneering spirit arises from a dual set of home cities:
Aspen, nestled in the Rocky Mountains, and Santa Fe, gracing the
Southwestern plateau.
Shaping the cultural landscape of these communities for two
decades, our hybrid arts business model – encompassing dance
performance, presentation, education, and outreach – serves as
our foundation. We believe it is a strong underpinning for our
future, providing revenue diversity and creative synergies. But
ASFB’s continued success depends upon ongoing support from our
generous and loyal donors.
ASFB operates with a dancer’s discipline. Our financial goals are

Hybrid business model
Linking home cities and beyond
Everyone on the team loved dance, but questions remained as
to how the organization would run as a business. “One of our
attributes was that we had no preconceived notion of how to run
a company. We had no experience in fundraising, choreographic
contracts, or anything,” says Mossbrucker. “We were doing things as
we went along.” Gradually, a set of values—integrity, perseverance,
excellence, and passion—solidified into a cornerstone of the
business.
First Aspen and then later Santa Fe, both well-established arts
meccas, responded enthusiastically to the permanent presence of
ballet in their midst. But the pivotal juncture that launched ASFB
onto the national scene came in 2003 when the company debuted
at both the Joyce Theater in New York and Jacob’s Pillow Dance
Festival in the Berkshires. “That is when we started getting national
attention and coming out of our isolated place in the mountains,”
says Mossbrucker. “It was a joyous time. We had a big party when
we signed the contract for the Joyce. I remember telling the dancers
they were going to dance at Jacob’s Pillow as well. All those moments
were so exciting.”
Steeped in collaboration, sharing, mentorship, generosity, curiosity,
and risk-taking, ASFB’s distinctive hybrid model relies upon the
diversification of activity and revenue by serving two geographical
markets across four operational areas: performance, presentation,
outreach, and education. It was this diversification that cushioned
the company through the recession. While the economy contracted,
ASFB stood by its mission of commissioning, creating, and
performing new works. It toured relentlessly. It also continued to
employ dancers and its staff—a group of capable arts administrators.
This fleet, boutique-scaled troupe is anchored by considerable
institutional strength. As executive director, Jean-Philippe Malaty
oversaw this structure’s evolution. “As the driver for the organization,
I always question how we can move forward: What would next year
be? Would we be in business? Will we have new dancers? Can we
raise the money? We always had that mentality,” Malaty explained.

Now, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet’s deep national footprint is represented
in engagements at prestigious performing arts venues across the
country. Striking a clear cultural chord, the company serves as an arts
ambassador not just for its home cities, but for the nation, touring
frequently overseas. “The company is taking a leadership role in the
field,” said Martin Wechsler, director of programming for the Joyce.
“The creation of new works, and supporting young choreographers
to create those works is essential and vital to the form. I think that’s
really admirable, and they do it well.”
Prominent foundations and corporations soon recognized Aspen
Santa Fe Ballet’s innovation and fueled its growth with grants. This
philanthropy lent important credibility to the company, motivating

further bountiful giving by generous arts donors. Malaty glances
through the list of funders and theaters presenting the company.
“There were no expectations before. It was vibrant and fun and
energetic; it was a first gig everywhere we went. Now we are the
seventh time at The Joyce, the fifth time in Denver, the third time in
Houston, so there are expectations. We have to deliver something
that is substantial and not just new. In a way, that is the milestone I
was waiting for. I feel a major turning point in the organization.”
Community commitment
Notwithstanding the company’s global performance reach, Aspen
Santa Fe Ballet’s commitment to its home communities is paramount
and evident in the company’s extensive network of schools, which
serve countless children and adults in both the Roaring Fork Valley
and Santa Fe. Taking a cue from the distinct cultural make-up of its
two communities, ASFB developed the award-winning Folklórico,
a groundbreaking after-school program for children that teaches
Mexican folk dance.
This embrace of dance of all varieties—going beyond one narrow
segment—facilitated an interest in presenting world-leading
dance companies in both Aspen and Santa Fe. The more dance an
audience experiences, the more the art form flourishes. To that end,
Aspen Santa Fe Ballet invited Juan Siddi Flamenco Santa Fe under
its arts management umbrella in 2014 in a unique collaboration.
The resulting cross fertilization of cultures, nationalities, genres,
musicians, and dancers has fostered a rich partnership between
flamenco troupe and ballet company.
Dance, a living art form
“Twenty years old! I didn’t think we would make it to one!” said
Schweppe with a chuckle. “If I had known what I was doing … again,
let’s say it had a life of its own.” Where a three-person creative team
heading up an eager but unknown troupe of seven once faced a
blank slate, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet now attracts top-tier artists and
collaborators as a nexus for dance innovation in the American West
and beyond.
In marking its 20th anniversary, the company enters a third
decade with undiminished creative drive. “We are still morphing
and changing,” says Malaty. “Reaching twenty took us by surprise.
It certainly went by fast—that is for sure.” New dancers, new
choreographic voices, and proven institutional strength all give
reason to celebrate and face the future with energy and optimism.

Craig Black is in his fifth season
with Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. The
California native was captain of his
San Jose high school’s nationally
ranked dance team. Craig received
his BFA from The Juilliard School,
where he was awarded the 2010
Princess Grace Award in Dance. He
won the 2011 Lorna Strassler Award
for Student Excellence at Jacob’s
Pillow Dance Festival. Craig’s summer
programs were at Springboard Danse
Montreal, Nederlands Dans Theater,
and the Pillow. “We are all super
involved. We all love what we do. At
first, a new piece is overwhelming. I
love the challenge in that. It gives me
the push I need to step it up to the
next level.”

Katherine Bolaños, a native of
Oklahoma City, is in her twelfth
season with ASFB. Katherine began
her professional career with Ballet
Oklahoma where she remained for
seven years performing mostly
classical roles. As a guest artist with
the Los Angeles Ballet Ensemble,
she toured extensively in Taiwan and
China. “I love the partnering in
contemporary work and moving in a
way that’s very slow, expressive, and
creature-like. I enjoy rehearsing in
the studio as much as performing
on stage. The studio gives the
freedom to grow artistically. On
stage I feel like I’m in a different
world.”
Sadie Brown, now in her third
season with Aspen Santa Fe Ballet,
began to dance in her hometown of
Evansville, Indiana. She also studied
at the Boston Ballet School, The Harid
Conservatory, and the Walton School
for Girls in Grantham, England. Sadie
performed for three seasons with the
Grand Rapids Ballet and as a guest
artist with Evansville Dance Theater,
Evansville Ballet, and Michigan
Classic Ballet. Her guesting with
Ballet Bratislava took her to Slovakia
and Austria. “The dancers have been
extremely welcoming and it’s a
wonderful work environment. Some
days it feels like you aren’t even
coming to work; you’re just showing
up with a group of people who love
to dance.”
Samantha Klanac Campanile
enjoys the honor of being the
company’s most longstanding
member, now in her fifteenth
season with Aspen Santa Fe Ballet.
Samantha has orignated roles in
creations by Jorma Elo, Nicolo Fonte,
and Cayetano Soto. Growing up in
Buffalo, she trained at the American
Academy of Ballet, The Chautauqua
Institute, NYSSA, and the School
of American Ballet. She began her
college education at SUNY Purchase,
but earned her BA in the arts from
SUNY Empire State College. “The
beauty of dance is that the challenge
is always there. We’re always learning,
and no two performances are alike.
The company has evolved in many
wonderful ways while I’ve been here.
I feel lucky to be a part of it.”

began training at the historic JonesHaywood School of Ballet and Duke
Ellington School of the Arts. She
then won a full scholarship to Dance
Theatre of Harlem’s Kennedy Center
residency. After earning a B.F.A.
with honors from SUNY Purchase,
she attended Springboard Danse
Montreal. Jenelle is a 2014 recipient
of the Princess Grace Award. “I want
to continue to learn by pairing
movement with aspects of humanity.
There is so much self-discovery in
collaboration – and being part of a
creation process makes me happy.”
Emily Proctor, a graduate of The
Juilliard School, is marking her ninth
season with Aspen Santa Fe Ballet.
A native of Raleigh, Emily trained
at the North Carolina School of the
Arts. Prior to joining ASFB, she had
the opportunity to tour with Hell’s
Kitchen Dance in Aszure Barton’s
Come In, which starred Mikhail
Baryshnikov. Emily was selected
as one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to
Watch” in 2010. “I had career-saving
foot surgery that went well. I’m so
grateful to be back doing what I
love, which gives my life a wonderful
sense of purpose.”
Seia
Rassenti danced with
Flamenco Y Mas as a youngster in
Arizona, then trained in classical
ballet with Linda Walker at the Tucson
Regional Ballet. After graduating
from the Kirov Academy of Ballet in
Washington, DC, she danced with
North Carolina Dance Theater where
she worked with Dwight Rhoden.
Seia is in her seventh season with
ASFB. “I feel most comfortable in
the contemporary mode. I trained
classically because I knew it would
help me become a better dancer.
But I really love the freedom and
personal expression of the work we
do here. I found my niche.”
Anthony
Tiedeman, newly
graduated from The Juilliard School,
brings to Aspen Santa Fe Ballet
his exposure to works by master
choreographers Merce Cunningham,
Paul Taylor, and José Limón. Training
in Lar Lubovitch’s choreography led
Anthony to join Lar Lubovitch Dance
Company for its Fall 2014 Joyce
Theater season. A New Jersey native,
Anthony has traveled abroad for
summer intensives at Springboard
Danse Montreal and Nederlands
Dans Theater. “When I first saw
Aspen Santa Fe Ballet at the Joyce,
I was blown away by the intense
physicality and strong, yet beautiful,
technique. It’s a balance I try to bring
to my own dancing.”

HISTORY
Indelible evenings. Authentic tradition. Unflinching drama. Juan
Siddi Flamenco Santa Fe’s immersive experience in the passionate
and disciplined world of flamenco is reaching loyal, and growing,
audiences in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and beyond.
Infusing old-world tradition with new attitude, Juan Siddi Flamenco
Santa Fe perpetuates the rich heritage of a centuries-old art form.
The remarkable ensemble of fourteen flamenco dancers, musicians,
and singers is hand selected with careful curation guided by the
distinct aesthetic of artistic director/choreographer, Juan Siddi.
The internationally renowned Siddi, an award-winning dancer,
instructor, choreographer and performer, trained in Germany with
strong artistic roots in Barcelona and Granada. His ensemble blends
top-notch dance artists and musicians from the U.S. or, steeped
in authenticity, from Spain, as JSFSF is a key member of a vibrant
global flamenco network.
The troupe dates to 2008 when Santa Fe legend Maria Benitez
passed the artistic torch to Siddi. Subsequently the company’s
furious footwork has drilled through annual summer seasons at
Santa Fe’s Maria Benitez Theatre. The company recently received
strong community recognition when Juan Siddi was granted the
City of Santa Fe’s Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts in 2011.
From its base in the American Southwest, the company has spread its
wings, touring nationwide from Atlanta, Wisconsin, Ft. Lauderdale,
and Brooklyn, and overseas, to Germany and Qatar. JSFSF has been
featured in television broadcasts of NBC, Telemundo, and Al Jazeera.
Over the years some of flamenco’s biggest names made guest
appearances with JSFSF: singers Jose Cortes from France, and Silverio
Heredia and Coral de Los Reyes from Spain; pianist Alex Conde from
Valencia; as well as dancer Carola Zertuche have performed with the
company.
JSFSF musical director Jose “Chuscales” Valle Fajardo, a native of
Antequera, Spain, grew up in the tradition of the Gypsies as a
protégé of Joaquin Fajardo and ardent admirer of Paco de Lucia.
A trained dancer as well as a guitarist, Chuscales collaborated with
some of Spain’s most outstanding flamenco artists before joining
JSFSF, now, for eight seasons.
It is with great pride that Juan Siddi Flamenco Santa Fe announced, in
January 2014, its joining the management structure of the esteemed
Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. By operating under ASFB’s established arts
umbrella, JSFSF stands to benefit from economies of scale and other
business synergies, as well as a simpatico artistic alliance.

JSFSF DIRECTOR
BIOGRAPHY
JUAN SIDDI, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Flamenco master Juan Siddi, solo artist and artistic director of Juan Siddi Flamenco Santa Fe,
has been described in the Santa Fe New Mexican as “a bundle of beautiful energy tempered
by technique and taste.” His high-profile presence in Santa Fe, where he teaches, choreographs
and performs, garnered him the Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts in 2011. Born and
raised in Frankfurt of mixed heritage (Italian father, Spanish mother), Juan was early immersed
in the culture of flamenco whose sonorous music he heard at home. Influential teachers were
Rebeca Carmona (Darmstadt) and la Tani (Barcelona). Debuting at the age of nine, six years
later Juan was a soloist in tablaos, memorably at Al Andalus, Frankfurt’s important flamenco
center. By 18, Juan was dancing and choreographing for Compañia Flamenca Alhama and
Noches de Amor, performing in Vienna, Berlin, and Zurich; at the prestigious Bienal de
Flamenco in Sevilla; and in a command performance attended by His Majesty Juan Carlos
King of Spain. He then became principal male dancer with Rafael Cortés, for five years giving
concerts throughout Europe. At the invitation of Maria Benitez, Juan took first steps in the U.S.,
joining her Santa Fe Teatro Flamenco troupe in 2002. Extensive U.S. touring was capped by
performances at New York City’s Joyce Theater. Juan was principal dancer/choreographer for
a farewell production, Maria Benitez: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow. He regularly appears as a
guest artist with Theatre Flamenco San Francisco, with whom he toured California and Mexico,
and with American Bolero Dance Company in New York City where he is a frequent guest
performer/choreographer. In 2007 Juan launched his own company, performing in summer
seasons in Santa Fe and touring both nationally and internationally. Broadcast performances
include NBC, Telemundo, and Al Jazeera. In 2014, Juan Siddi accepted the warm invitation to
join the management team of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, and through this partnership perpetuates
his authentic version of a centuries-old art form.

GRACIELA
GARCIA
Graciela Garcia was born and
raised in northern New Mexico.
She began flamenco training with
Benigna Sanchez Duty. Graciela
has studied at Seville’s Bienale
de Flamenco with the legendary
baillora Matilda Corral. She also
had the privilege of studying
with Eva Yerbabuena and others.
As a member of Alma Flamenca,
Graciela performed at the Festival
Flamenco Internacional under the
mentorship of Eva Encinias Sandoval,
Joaquin Encinias and Omayra
Amaya. Graciela earned a master’s
degree in education from New
Mexico Highlands University and a
bachelor’s degree in anthropology
and Latin American studies from
the University of Rochester. “I’ve
reached an age where some of my
former students are professionals
themselves. Since flamenco is my
passion, I feel blown away by the
magnitude of the passion for the art
form in recent years.”

RADHA
GARCIA
Radha Garcia was born in Calcutta,
India, but spent most of her life in
Santa Fe. She was drawn to flamenco
at age five and started taking classes
with Gioia Tama. Over the years she
studied with Inmaculada Ortega,
Jose Maya, and Farruquito among
others. Juan Siddi was Garcia’s first
mentor and, with him, she toured the
United States, traveled to the Middle
East, and performed at the Maria
Benitez Cabaret in Santa Fe. She is
now entering her fifth season with
JSFSF. She was honored this year to
be on stage with Carmen Ledesma
and recently returned from studying
in Sevilla and Madrid. She lives in San
Francisco where she dances with
Carola Zertuche’s Theatre Flamenco.
“The Lensic in Santa Fe is gorgeous.
Receiving a standing ovation from a
packed theater is incredible. Dancing
there is an amazing experience;
you feel the pressure more on
that big stage versus dancing in a
smaller tablao setting. I love every
minute and can’t wait until our next
performance.”
ILLEANA
GOMEZ
Illeana Gomez first encountered
Spanish classical dance in her
hometown of Laredo, TX. She
made her professional debut
with Flamenco Fuego de San
Antonio and Tierra Adentro Cuadro
Flamenco. She continued her
flamenco training with Amor de
Dios in Madrid and New York. After
relocating to Albuquerque to study
at the Conservatory of Flamenco
Arts, Illeana joined Alma Flamenca
and the Yjastros, the American
Flamenco Repertory Company. After
earning her MFA in dance with a
concentration in flamenco from the
University of New Mexico, Illeana
joined Juan Siddi Flamenco Santa
Fe. She returned to Spain to study
with world-leading flamenco artists,
touring with Flamenco Vivo Carlota
Santana. This is Illeana’s seventh
season with Juan Siddi Flamenco
Santa Fe. “Although I was born in
Texas, so far from flamenco’s place
of origin, it has always been a part
of my life. I respect the tradition of
flamenco, but I want to voice my
own narrative, and tell my story as an
American dancing Spanish dance.”
STEPHANIE
NARVAEZ
Boston-born Stephanie Narvaez
lives in Seville where she frequently
performs at the tablao El Auditorio
de Alvarez Quintero. She has
danced with Juan Siddi since 2009.
Stephanie also teaches and performs
in her home town of Boston and in
San Francisco. Stephanie debuted
at age eight under the tutelage of
Clara Ramona y Ramon de Los Reyes.
Continuing her studies with Omayra
Amaya, she followed her teacher to
New York where she graduated from
New York University. El Torombo,
Farruquito, Carmen Ledesma and
Manuela Rios were other significant
teachers. Stephanie is entering her
seventh season with Juan Siddi

my life and gives me the opportunity
to surprise myself and work to my

Mexico, started her career in Mexico
City’s Tablao Meson de Triana,
studying with Manolo Vargas and

to train with flamenco masters
and dance with Los Tarantos. In
1998, Carola established herself

the Middle East, showcasing
her work in flamenco festivals in
Monterrey, Mazatlán, and Mexico
City. In 2004, Carola became artistic
director of Theatre Flamenco of San

Her numerous accolades include
two nominations for the Isadora
Duncan Award for Outstanding
Achievement in Performance. This
is Carola’s seventh season as a guest
dancer with Juan Siddi Flamenco
Santa Fe. “I need to dance, to move,
to perform, to be on stage. Even as a
child, I used to prefer to be in dance
class than with my friends or with
parties. I always thought, oh no, I’m

The following individuals and organizations have earmarked their annual giving to a specific area of interest. Their
continued extraordinary commitment provides the foundation for Aspen Santa Fe Ballet’s vision, growth, and

CIRCLE
Innovation and creativity
are the hallmarks of Aspen
Santa Fe Ballet. Producers’
Circle donors underwrite the
creation of new works by some
of the world’s top choreographers, ASFB performances,
and presentations of visiting
dance companies. Their contributions are crucial to Aspen
Santa Fe Ballet’s unwavering
commitment to providing
inimitable programming of
the highest caliber to its home
communities and beyond.
Aspen Santa Fe Ballet dancers
make up the heart and soul of
our organization. Our Dancers’
Circle donors allow us to care
for and nurture our greatest
assets. They allow Aspen Santa
Fe Ballet to retain some of the
top talent in the field and
contribute to making our
communities havens in which
artists can live and create.
Their contributions specifically
support our dancers’ competitive salaries, retirement, health
benefits, and physical therapy.
Education and outreach lie at
the core of our mission. We
thank the following individuals and foundations for supporting our passion to provide
high quality, year-round arts
education for students of all
abilities and socio-economic
backgrounds. Their gifts allow
Aspen Santa Fe Ballet’s school
and Folklórico program to
provide scholarships and free,
after-school outreach, enabling
local children to experience
the art of dance.
Our Flamenco Circle donors
specifically
support
the
authentic, passionate and
acclaimed Juan Siddi Flamenco Santa Fe, now under
the management of ASFB.
This exciting partnership
allows Juan Siddi Flamenco to
reach its full artistic potential,
expanding the vibrant flamenco tradition in Santa Fe and
beyond.

We’re not like most craft distillers.
F o r e x a m p l e , w e h a v e a d i s t i l l e r y.
There are a lot of so-called “craft distillers” out there these days, many of whom are distillers in
name only. They buy industrial alcohol from big manufacturers, blend it with a small amount
they make from a contract distiller and call it their own. But, of course, their label sure does
look pretty. Woody Creek Distillers, however, is the real deal. We make and bottle our spirits in
our own distillery. And we grow most of our ingredients ourselves. So if you want a truly craft
distilled spirit, drink Woody Creek.
