Parish Support - August 18, 2013
20th Sunday of Ordinary Time
Dear Friends:
In October, St. James Church will begin its observance of our
150th year of incorporation as a parish. So, how will we
celebrate this milestone event? There is an Anniversary
Committee in place, headed by Jaye Barre and Mary Corbet.
One event of the anniversary year will be the opportunity to
explore the roots of the apostolate of our patron saint of our
parish, St. James the Greater, by taking a ten day pilgrimage
from Lisbon to Compostela from June 21 to June 30, 2014.
In Lisbon, we will have the grace to visit the home in which
St. Anthony was born. We’ll spend two days in Fatima, where
the Blessed Mother appeared in 1917 to Blessed Jacinta,
Francisco and their sister, Lucia. We’ll tour several
monasteries and cathedrals – as well as the beautiful scenery
of the Portuguese coastline through Aveiro, dubbed the
“Venice” of Portugal because of its canals; Coimbra with its
legendary university and Porto. Then, we will meander toward
Braga before crossing the Spanish border at Pontevedra,
where a number of pilgrims will have the chance, should they
desire, to walk the famous Camino de Compostela for two
days. For those who do not want to walk, they will go directly
to Compostela and visit the Basilica where the mortal remains
of St. James the Greater are entombed. We will cap off the
experience with a mini-retreat before our return to the United
States on July 1st.
What an opportunity of a lifetime! Imagine, to explore the
area of Spain where this Apostle sowed the seeds of the
Gospel, established a Christian faith community and, bearing
witness to the faith, was later martyred. For me, personally,
this will be the hallmark of our 150th Anniversary as St. James
Church.

Information is available through the brochure prepared by
Selective International and by attending the information night
on September 26th. Alexis and Paul Carola have worked
tirelessly to arrange this trip. While I spent extensive time in
both Portugal and Spain and speak both languages, I have
never been to Compostela, so I am very excited about this
pilgrimage. I will serve as the Spiritual Director, to offer Mass
daily and to hear confessions and counseling as requested but,
for the history, we will have a professional tour guide.
I have no doubt that this celebration of our 150th Anniversary,
from its kick-off until its closing on the actual anniversary,
October 20, 2014, will be a time of jubilee and, with the
intercession of St. James, a year of grace bearing countless
blessings.
Joyfully,
Fr. Glenn

In today’s world of globalization and high-speed communication, our world is becoming more integrated with cultural diversity. What once seemed like the religions of exotic faraway
lands are now practiced by families next door. Our world is
home to an incredible diversity of religions, all of which have
a profound influence on the way people live their lives and
think about who they are.
Fr. Glenn provides you with a clear landscape of the world's
religions in an easy to understand framework. You will learn
about the founders, the history and essential teachings of each
of these major religions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Islam
and Christianity. Through this discovery you will develop an
awareness of the place of religion in the lives of your neighbors as well as a more authentic understanding and a deeper
commitment to your own faith tradition.

As we prepare to celebrate our 150th Anniversary of
incorporation in 2014, the 150th Anniversary Committee is
actively seeking interesting photographs of St. James
Church – both of the facilities and of parishioners. We are
trying to add to the parish archives which can help us to
document the growth of our parish over the years, and to
record special events in the life of our parish. We are
especially interested in older photos. Photographs can be
scanned
and
e-mailed
to
Mary
Corbet
at
[email protected] or originals can be brought to the
parish office and we will scan them and return them to you.
Interesting stories and memories will also be sought – so jog
those memories!
