THOUGHTS FROM THE NEW PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD
Most of the Board members are new to their positions, so please be patient with us. We all want to do a good job in representing you. We
know we can’t please everyone all the time (especially Unitarian Universalists), but we will do our best to hear what you have to say.
The Board and Standing Committees are here to represent the congregation. Our goal this year is to improve our communication and finances.
We need to hear your thoughts, ideas and concerns regarding the growth
of our church. So please talk with the appropriate person regarding your
area of interest.
The Standing Committee Chairs and/or co-chairs are:
Membership – Shirley LeMasters
Finance – Chris Eager/Carol McDaniel
Social Justice – Bob Hogg/Loyd Newman
Facilities – Tim Mielcarek
Go directly to the person responsible for your area of concern or interest.
Words mean different things to different people. So please try to make
sure that you really do have a disagreement rather than a simple misunderstanding before going any further. I know that many times we are
distracted when people are talking to us and sometimes miss the point of
what is being said because we are already thinking of our response. I
have been told that I do this sometimes. (I think someone told me, but I
was busy preparing my argument, I mean my rebuttal - well anyway I
hope you get the idea). So let’s all stop and really practice listening.
We as Board members are here to listen. There will be one or two of us
available after each church service. So please talk to the appropriate
person regarding your ideas and suggestions. You might even consider
joining one or two of the committees. The Board members will be wearing a blue ribbon attached to their name badge and they are:
President: Janice Breece
1st Vice President: Sarah Gonzales (Responsible for Committees)
2nd Vice President: Bill Smith (Responsible for Fund Raising)

How Did the “"Teddy Bear” Teach Us Compassion?
Our relationship with animals is complicated. We love and fear them, and changed our minds about animals over the
years. We'll view a TED talk by Jon Mooallem which explores the intricacies of those relationships over the years
and how they affect us and the animals. We'll have discussion after the video.

Lake Fire near Camp de Benneville Pines
As most of you know, a major forest fire began near Camp de Benneville Pines last Wednesday and continues to rage. In this message, I am
letting the PSWD community know the status of its camp.
At the time this message was written, no Camp de Benneville Pines
structures have been damaged. We believe that the fire began in the
area of the mountain above the water tank; so far, there is no determination about what started the fire. The fire advanced east towards the
creek and up the mountain behind the camp. It is still active and there
continue to be flareups above the camp.
Camp Ta Ta Pochon, a YMCA camp next door to the east, may have lost one structure to date.
Plans continue for the July PSWD youth camps. We will know the status of these camps for sure after the fire is contained in the coming days.
Five staff members are physically at the camp, including Janet James, the executive director. They do not have access
to a computer. They ask that supporters limit their communications to camp staff until conditions stabilize. If anyone
needs to communicate with Janet, she asks that you let me know your questions or comments and I will relate them to
her. My e-mail address is [email protected].
Janet and the staff appreciate your thoughts and support.
In peace,
Glenn Noreen

BYOF (Bring Your Own Flowers)
Jon Triplett has taken a job in Yellowstone
National Park for the summer, so we will
not have payment envelopes in the office
until his return in October, where, hopefully,
he will be willing to make his beautiful
floral arrangements for you once again!
In the meantime, please help enhance the
beauty of the sanctuary by signing up to
bring flowers on a given Sunday. We have vases in the kitchen corner cabinet next to the
stove. Drop by the market before service, find a vase, add water and voila!
