2012 NCHA Tamarang Futurity: 30 May - 10 June
Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre (AELEC), Tamworth
The 39th annual NCHA Futurity will offer prize money in excess of $700,000 with the winner taking home a
guaranteed $75,000. Competitors and spectators from all over Australia, New Zealand, the South Pacific and the
USA travel to Tamworth for the event.
The Futurity event is for 3 year old horses who have never been shown on cattle in a competitive environment.
They have spent the last 18 months training for their debut in the show arena and this creates great excitement
and anticipation.
These amazing athletes mature with age and you're always assured of seeing a display of some of the finest
cutting action in the world. Ordinarily you will see a professional NCHA trainer aboard horses in Open divisions and
in the Non Pro classes you will find our Non Professional riders who are competitors who do not receive any
remuneration for the training of cutting horses, but simply compete for the pure enjoyment and exhilaration of the
sport.
2011 NCHA Tamarang Futurity Champions - 'Ducks Dux & Clint Allen'
In addition to the action packed cutting program, some of the evening entertainment includes the popular NCHA
Stockman's Challenge, Aussie Horseman Demonstration, Bull Riding, Rodeo, Professional Farriers and country
music entertainment.
The Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre (AELEC) is world class. The
spectacular $38million venue sits on a 22 hectare site on the New England Highway at the southern end of
Tamworth. AELEC is an iconic landmark that includes superior stadium design on 2 levels and a theatre style
selling ring. The indoor arena seats 3,500 people; there are 6 stable blocks and stables for 478 horses. The
covered selling ring has electronic screens with seating for 660 people. This can double as a practice pen or warmup arena. The truck and camping facilities has capacity for 260 vehicles with a truck wash and laundry site. The
grounds also offer 3 practice pens and 2 full size loping arenas. In addition, there are 5 covered stockyards with a
capacity to house 800 head per day. The main concourse stadium level has the capacity to house 54 trade sites,
which are fully utilized during the NCHA Futurity.
Cutting Tips
TIPS FOR BEGINNERS (AARON WHEATLEY)
Find a horse that suits you. Get advice from your trainer and make sure you try the horse. There is a horse for
everyone; an aggressive or strong rider suits a different kind of horse to a timid rider. Look for a seasoned horse,
something that has had a good preparation, preferably with a trainer. A horse aged six years or older is ideal for a
Non Professional or youth to start on. A horse that has had a good training program will stay solid and will have
fewer bad habits in the cutting arena. A horse like this will give you confidence.
Don’t do too much on your own when you first get your cutting horse home. Tuition from the start is vital; it will stop
you from developing bad habits. Your trainer will get to know you and your horse and will keep things specific,
giving you the important basics for your requirements.
Trotting and loping your horse down prior to work or competition will help to prepare his mind. During this work you
can incorporate trotting straight, stopping and backing up. Repeating this, a number of times will enforce the
pattern you will be using when working a cow. Also, be able to steer and control your horse with one hand, this will
encourage you to use your feet.

Matters Arising.
1.Grant enquired if the feasibility study regarding the combining of
National Finals and Futurity as moved by Paul Jensen, was ever
done.
Graeme replied that the special meeting covered that and it was
dicussed. The decision was made to move the Finals to the second
weekend in April, not Easter and those two extra events be added to
the Futurity.
2.Theresa Brown asked if the Travel boxes for the National trophies
were ever made. Colin Parkinson has made one.
Presidents Report.
The New Zealand Cutting Horse Associations past year has been an
enjoyable one for me. There seems to have been less problems but
the challenge is still there in securing arenas & cattle for shows and
training clinics. With that in mind, I would like to give a thank you to
the members that have opened up their arenas & homes so we can
have our shows.
What has made this year so good for myself, are the councilors. We
have had a great working relationship & it has been a pleasure for me
to chair the meetings.
Thank you to our secretaries, Julie and Karen. For all there dedicated
work in keeping everything in order. To the secretaries of the clubs.
You have done a great job & hopefully your job has been made
easier with the entries coming in on time.
This is my only grumble and I would hope that in the future, there will
be no more late entries. As its not fair on the secretaries taking
entries and having to wait till Friday to do the paperwork.
Thanks to the Cattle Grazers, your job in helping raise money for the
association is greatly appreciated.
Sharleen, Thanks for your work with the Chatter.
I would like to welcome back, Bryan Lowcay, who has been working
in the States for the last 13 years. He will be a valued member of our
association.
Lastly I would like to remind everyone, that this association is about
the training & showing of the cutting horse, not about individuals or
North versus South and we need to keep puling together to keep the
association strong.
Cheers
Graeme McInnes.

REMITS.
Discussion followed and some changes suggested.
ie;
2.pg 34 NP regulations, change to legal guardians and partnerships.
3.Leave as is.
4.Lease period for 1 year minimum and primary owner or family
cannot ride the said horse at competitions.
5.Geoff said that he felt for the good of the sport, rules were too
prohibiting. It was clarified that you may ride another person’s horse
after a show to help them, as long as no remuneration is accepted.
(To help needs clarifying). Julie said that the rulebook should read
direct or indirect remuneration for help received.
6/7 Already amended.
8.Julie said that maybe the NP rules should be published in the
Chatter to refresh everyone’s memories.
9.Already amended.
10. Agreed on.
Remit vote...NOT CARRIED.
GENERAL BUSINESS.
* Geoff asked for a redefinition of pro. We NEED to help each other to
keep the sport alive and achievable, without worrying about losing our
NP status.
A suggestion could be to be able to train horses and people to an
agreed total sum of money.eg $10,000.00
Grant felt the Pro trainers would suffer and the initiative to train would
be lost.
As there seems to be some confusion regarding NP rules it was
suggested that the Chatter advise that anyone with questions re this
contact a councilor or write in to council so it can be addressed.
* Theresa had been approached by Danny Cummack whose son
Reuben is cutting, to say that not being Easter for the finals makes it
hard for some families to be able to come to AGM and prize giving
dinner as its not a long weekend.
*Geoff re buckles last year. He noted that the engraving was wearing
off after 1 year as they were only printed on and not engraved/ also
badly tarnishing.
Quality doesn’t appear to be good. Grant suggested looking in
Australia at Buckles instead of America. Julie agreed and suggested
looking at changing buckle suppliers.
TROPHIES....Lineman trophies are now not available.
Julie said with the damage now being done to the Jim Renos etc, we
should look at a user-friendlier trophy that’s not so fragile. Some have
been irreparably damaged due to wrongful cleaning etc. Perhaps
there should be cleaning instructions in the boxes that will transport
them.
Steve Gregory won a very nice one donated by Mrs Flyers and it was
very practical and nice. Theresa suggested that council look into
getting ones like this.
No Further business. The meeting closed at 9pm.
Secretaries Added Note: Huge thank you to Janine Taylor for taken
minutes of this meeting and typing them up for me. Karen
