Yosakoi Soran Summer Festival Overview: Wearing colorful and unique costumes,
people from all around Hokkaido dance lively with Naruko, a wooden percussion
instrument, to the music of “soran”, old herring fishermen’s work songs, in many places
in Sapporo. The main site is located at Odori Park. There is a bit of a story behind
this. About 20 years ago, a Hokkaido University student saw Yosakoi Festival in Kochi
Prefecture. He was so impressed with the performance and decided to start the similar
festival in Hokkaido. The first festival was held in 1992 and it was very small. There were
only 10 teams of 1,000 participants. But it has been growing bigger and bigger each year
and now over 300 teams of 33,000 participants take part in the festival! There are places
where visitors can take part in the dance, so Yosakoi Soran Festival is a lot of fun and a
good opportunity to make local friends!

ago by volcanic activity, and it has a maximum depth of 363 meters, making it
the second deepest lake in Japan. Stop at a local restaurant and enjoy a Salmon

Day 5: Wed, June 10 – OTARU – ASAHIKAWA – SOUNKYO ONSEN (Breakfast,
Lunch & Dinner). First stop is at the Sunagawa Highway Oasis, a shopper’s
paradise on the way to Asahikawa. For lunch enjoy a bowl of famous Asahikawa
Ramen. Next we stop at the Otokoyama Sake Brewery for a quick tour and
tasting of sake and other tasty products. Our destination for the day is Sounkyo,

dinner buffet at your hotel. SOUNKYO CHOYO RESORT HOTEL
Day 6: Thur, June 11 – SOUNKYO ONSEN - ABASHIRI (Breakfast & Dinner).
Visit, Ginga Ryusei Waterfall. The word “Ginga” means “the Milky Way” and
the word “Ryusei” means “a shooting star”. It was peppermint that built Kitami’s
economy in the early days. During the peak production in 1938/1939, Kitami’s
peppermint accounted for approximately 70% of the global market and became
globally recognized as a special produce of Kitami and of Japan. Adjacent to the
Museum stands the Mint Distillation House where you can enjoy the aroma of
freshly made mint. We arrive in Abashiri and visit Abashiri Prison. This evening
marvel at the variety and quality of items served with your second Kaiseki
dinner. ABASHIRI KOSO HOTEL
Day 7: Fri, June 12 – ABASHIRI - LAKE AKAN - TOKACHIGAWA ONSEN
(Breakfast & Dinner). Today we’re in for a real treat! The sightseeing boat around
Lake Akan is Akan’s most popular tour. From the boat you can see the unspoiled
primitive forest that shows natural beauty in each season. At the Spherical
Moss Exhibition and Observation Center on Churui Island, you can see
real Moss Ball known as Marimo, a natural treasure in Japan. Lake Onneto
is about 25 minute drive from Lake Akan and part of Akan National Park. While
it isn’t as famous with tourists as some of the other lakes in the area like Lake
Mashu or Lake Akan, it certainly should be! This evening soak your body in the
healing hot springs of Tokachigawa and enjoy a bountiful buffet of local and
seasonal vegetables and other specialties. TOKACHIGAWA DAIICHI HOTEL
Day 8: Sat, June 13 – TOKACHIGAWA ONSEN - SAPPORO (Breakfast).
Now we make way to Sapporo. First stop in Sapporo is Hokkaido Shrine.
The Meiji Emperor decided on a policy of developing Hokkaido in 1869. This
famous Shinto shrine was erected in 1871. Sapporo Beer has been brewed
in Sapporo since 1877. The Sapporo Beer Museum opened in 1987 in a
former brewery from the Meiji period. It’s time for the Yosakoi Soran Summer
Festival! Reserved tickets for the main stage performance are included for your
maximum enjoyment. KEIO PLAZA HOTEL SAPPORO
