“Flowers… are a proud assertion
that a ray of beauty out-values all
the utilities of the world.”
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
As springtime finally emerges
after a long winter, Evergreen
is springing to life. Residents,
families and community
members are able to enjoy all
that the Evergreen grounds
have to offer.
Seven acres of the Evergreen
campus have been recognized
as an Oak Savanna Woodland. This area bordering
Sawyer Creek includes primarily oak and hickory
trees and open woodlands and creates a sanctuary
for animals, trees, flowers and visitors.
The Oak Savanna is dotted with a plethora of native
flower species including shooting stars, wooden
enemies, Joe-pye weed, great blue lobelia, and cup
plants. Native trees such as burr oak, shag bark
hickory, maple, and black cherry tower above
the walking trail that is maintained for residents,
families and the local community to see and
experience the beauty of the Oak Savanna.
“Anytime you can get residents out and they can
see the wildlife and the flowers, I think that is a
positive thing,” grounds manager Chris Bellin said.
“Sometimes residents may not feel well, they may
not be in the happiest state because of their health
and maybe getting out there just to see the flowers
can help out.”
While the trail doubles as a cross country ski trail
for Oshkosh residents in the winter, the springtime
offers residents and their families the chance to
enjoy being outdoors.
People aren’t the only inhabitants of the Oshkosh
community attracted to the Evergreen grounds.
Evergreen also serves as a monarch way station, a
place that provides monarchs with the necessary
nourishment and resources to reproduce as they
migrate. With the Oak Savanna and so many
gardens, the Evergreen grounds were already a
natural monarch way station.
“There are parameters you have to meet to be
considered a monarch way station, and I started
looking through and I realized that we don’t have
to do anything. We’re already there because of all of
our gardens,” Bellin said.

Almost all Evergreen’s Village Homes have an
outside garden packed full of nectar plants that
adult monarchs enjoy. Those flowers combined with
the Oak Savanna’s milkweed makes Evergreen the
perfect monarch sanctuary.
Adding to the life of Evergreen is35,000 tulip bulbs
planted in many gardens that light the campus with
an ocean of color in the spring. “Word has spread
and people come just to look at the tulips,” Bellin
said. “It’s really something to see.”
Black Cherry
“What an inspiring legacy the Schwalms left to
Evergreen,” said Staszkiewicz. “The Evergreen
grounds offer outdoor spaces that our residents say
are some of the most beautiful places at Evergreen. A
perfect example of the impact a significant gift makes
on life at Evergreen, not only for the present but for
the future as well.”
CEO Ken Arneson has some new ideas for our
tulip display. “I’m personally hoping that our tulips
will be in bloom in time for prom and that maybe
there are high school students who would consider
coming here and taking their pictures,” Arneson
said.
Carol Staszkiewicz, vice president of foundation
advancement, is always ready to recognize our
donors. The June F. and A. Thomas Schwalm estate
gift, one of the largest in Evergreen history, was
earmarked for the Woodland Preservation Fund
that helps maintain and provide the beautification
of the Evergreen grounds.

Master Site Plan Update
We are proud to inform you of the renovations and
improvements that are continuing to occur around
the Evergreen campus!
Phase Two, which included the remodeling of Manor
View to replace Garden Terrace, was completed in
March. Residents then relocated from Garden Terrace
to Manor View, resulting in 40 private assisted living
accommodations (Garden Heights and the new Manor
View) being located on the same floor. CEO Ken
Arneson believes both residents and employees will
benefit from the move and that it will help the staff
work more efficiently.
Garden Heights also received minor improvements
with increased lounge space, a fresh coat of paint, and
new carpeting.
As Phase Three begins, ShareHaven residents
temporarily relocated to Garden Terrace for the
renovation of the memory care building that is
expected to be completed by mid-July. Private
bathrooms will be added to each of the 20
accommodations and common spaces will include a
new exercise room and large four-season room.
Throughout the past year, the Master Site Plan
included moving short-term rehabilitation
accommodations to the renovated households 5 and 6
of Creekview South, the addition of a fourth elevator
to improve accessibility, and an upper deck off The
GardenSide for outdoor dining. This year also brings
plans for new fitness center equipment and continued
work on the grounds.
“We keep looking at how we can improve accessibility,
so another area we’re working on in 2014 is
improving parking around Creekview and seeing
what we can do to create more spots because parking
is always the challenge,” Arneson said.
4
“We want to provide a really good home-like setting,”
Arneson said. “If you look at our assisted living,
we don’t build big individual bedrooms because
our philosophy is that we don’t want you spending
the majority of your time alone in your room. Our
philosophy is - how can we help you take advantage of
our campus?”
The upgrades also give the Oshkosh community a
chance to experience more of Evergreen - from family
swims at the aquatic center, to fishing off our pier,
to community groups utilizing Evergreen meeting
spaces. “We want to have Evergreen become more of a
tool for the broader community, whether it’s Learning
in Retirement or other groups because, as more
people come to Evergreen, we are more part of the
community,” Arneson said.
Arneson has been very pleased with the initial stages
of the capital campaign that is in progress to support
the Master Site Plan renovations. He believes that
donating gifts to Evergreen is a great way for people
to impact the Oshkosh community.
“With the capital campaign, people have the chance
to put their handprint on Oshkosh and how we want
to provide care and services to older adults,” Arneson
said. “People always talk about destinations, where
they would want to live, and we have a chance to
create that right here in Oshkosh.”
With the support of residents, families and the
community, Evergreen is proud to showcase the
renovations that are part of our Master Site Plan
project.
Volunteers
Making a Difference
The programs and services that Evergreen offers to
its residents would not be possible without the help
and devotion of volunteers. From transporting, to
helping with clerical duties, to spending quality time
with residents, volunteers help Evergreen operations
run smoothly. Volunteers also help Evergreen
financially, generously donating their time and
talents.
Currently, 134 volunteers are registered at Evergreen
and log an average of 135 total volunteer hours per
week. According to volunteer resources coordinator
Phyllis Thompson, volunteers logged 7,927 hours in
2013.
The volunteers have also been crucial to many
projects that have been completed at Evergreen,
including the renovation of Manor Mart. “Manor
Mart is operated by residents and a few community
volunteers,” Thompson said. “The re-sale shop
averages $1,000 per month in income, which is
given to the Residents Council for projects and
improvements at Evergreen.”
Both Evergreen and the residents benefit from the
presence of so many volunteers, and the impact
that they have on the community is overwhelming.
“Simply put, volunteers bless the residents with their
presence,” Thompson said.
Evergreen is always looking for enthusiastic,
responsible and respectful people to volunteer their
time. Evergreen volunteers also enjoy many benefits
including free use of the fitness and aquatic centers,
an annual volunteer reception or World of Thanks
celebration, and the opportunity to help others, make
new friends, and share special talents and skills.
To become a volunteer, please contact Phyllis
Thompson at [email protected]
Barb Carpenter worked at Evergreen as a
housekeeper and enjoyed the community so much
that she found herself returning a few years later as
a volunteer. She has now been donating her time to
Evergreen for eight years and enjoys visiting with and
getting to know the residents. “The residents are just
really special,” Carpenter said.
Like many of the volunteers, Carpenter helps plan
and organize resident group activities, and she
started the Knitting Club. Caps, mittens, scarves
and baby sweaters made by the club members are
donated to the Salvation Army, and they recently
donated scarves for 5th graders in the Oshkosh Area
School District in support of the city-wide AntiBullying Campaign project. Carpenter also volunteers
at the gift shop once a week.

lily, a fitting symbol for our appeal theme.
Residents engaging with others, expressing themselves, keeping
playful spirits alive, experiencing wellness, finding joy, creating
glory! What better reasons for giving?
May God bless all who gifted us during 2013.

Building Community Campaign
The purpose of the Building Community
Campaign is two-fold: to transform the
Evergreen Campus to Broaden our
Community and to Grow the Evergreen
Foundation to Build our Endowment.
Much work is necessary to reach our
lofty goal of $3 million. Fifteen volunteer
campaigners are helping staff personally
visit or call more than several hundred
people during 2014; many more will be
contacted through special mailings. In
addition, a special gathering will be hosted
for Oshkosh community friends to learn
about the campus improvements intended
to enhance the lives of aging adults and
their families. Our goal is for our visitors
to experience Evergreen and to see
themselves that, more than a home for
many, Evergreen is a destination offering
accessibility to many resources for families
and the community organizations.
We have already realized a total of
$1,466,601 in cash, pledge and estate
planned gifts. This includes the fourth
largest bequest in Evergreen history that
resulted in the naming of our new library
The Thomas E. Neta Memorial Library.
While we are grateful for the many
blessings we have already received, we
continue to pray that God will bless our
efforts with much success.
