AUTUMN
Welcome
2012
Hello and welcome to another
season that is packed full of the
great entertainment that you’ve
come to expect from us. This
autumn we’ve got some of the
hottest names in comedy for you,
mixed in with a great range of
rock, pop, Asian, classical music
and much more; all topped off by
this year’s Christmas show, the
Antony Flint
smash hit musical, Grease. We’ve
also included details of some of next year’s shows such
as The Hairy Bikers, Jimmy Carr, Fairport Convention,
Russell Kane and Paloma Faith. Tickets are sure to go fast
so remember to get in quickly!
This is my first season here at De Montfort Hall and even though
I’ve been here just a short while, I can already see why it’s a venue
that is cherished by so many people and has a strong history of
giving the people of Leicestershire great entertainment.
The excellent work that’s been done here over the last couple of years
has created a solid base for us to move forward from and be really
positive about the future of this great venue.
I’m really looking forward to working both at De Montfort Hall and
in Leicester and I hope we see you back here at the venue soon.
All the best
Antony Flint, General Manager

A season of excitement and commemoration starts with an exhilarating
concert of Russian music – LPC will be joined by members of the
Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus.
In an exciting programme of Russian music, large choral forces join a
professional London orchestra to perform Prokofiev’s powerful work,
Alexander Nevsky. Rachmaninov’s popular 2nd piano concerto (with
internationally renowned pianist Leslie Howard) and Borodin’s
ever-popular Polovtsian Dances complete the programme.
Mahler’s Fifth Symphony follows
a clear progression from a mood of
dark despair to joyful reconciliation.
The opening of the fourth movement,
the Adagietto, is by far the
best-known and is often performed
by itself. It was originally conceived
as a love-poem for the beautiful
Alma Schindler who Mahler married
in 1902, and was made famous by
its subsequent use in Visconti’s
1971 film, Death in Venice.

Beethoven Overture, Coriolan
Brahms Symphony No. 3
Beethoven Violin Concerto
Brahms’s Third Symphony, for some the composer’s greatest, is a
magnificent achievement. He made his adoring Viennese public wait six
years for it, and what he produced united, for one critic, the “titanism” of
the First Symphony with the “untroubled pastoral charm” of the second.
Perhaps surprisingly, fireworks are not on the agenda here. The work
instead is subdued, confessional and reserved, with each movement
ending piano or pianissimo. Here it is preceded by Beethoven’s
concise yet suitably statuesque ‘tone poem’ Coriolan and
followed by the ground-breaking Violin Concerto.

This most famous of fantasy ballets
for all the family begins as night falls
on Christmas Eve. As snowflakes fall
outside, the warm glow of the open fire
sends flickering shadows across the
boughs of the Christmas tree and all
the presents beneath. When midnight
strikes we are swept away to a fairytale
world where nothing is quite as it seems,
toy dolls spring to life, the Mouse-king
and his mouse-army battle with the
Nutcracker Prince and we travel through
the Land of Snow to an enchanted
place the magic really begins…
The greatest romantic ballet
of all time is brought to life by
Tchaikovsky’s haunting and
unforgettable score. From the
impressive splendour of the
Palace ballroom to the moon-lit
lake where swans glide in perfect
formation, this compelling tale of
tragic romance has it all, exquisite
ensemble pieces, memorable pas
de deux and breathtaking solos.
Every toy has a story, especially in
this charming comedy of errors,
a witty combination of antics and
abracadabra set in a doll maker’s
workshop. This light-hearted tale
of mistaken identity and confused
lovers follows mischievous Swanilda,
her impetuous suitor Franz and the
eccentric toymaker Dr. Coppelius as
they are brought to life by sparkling
choreography and the animated
score of Delibes. Coppélia is perfect
for first-time ballet goers, families
and everyone in between.

A musician of scholarship, his repertoire
– one of the most extensive of any

the established masterpieces of all
periods, with particular emphasis
on the virtuoso works.
Beginning piano lessons at the
age of four, he realised his musical
vocation at Canterbury Cathedral
where he was a Head Chorister under
Allan Wicks. After studies in London
with H. A. Bate, he continued his
studies at the Royal Northern College
of Music, Manchester, and the Paris
Conservatoire, concluding his formal
studies with Jean Guillou and Odile

Mahler Symphony No. 4
Richard Strauss was so in awe of Mahler’s Fourth Symphony – especially the
passage towards the end of the radiant slow movement when the gates of
Heaven open in a resplendent E major – that in homage he sent him a huge
parcel containing his complete published works. Mahler broke with convention
by ending this most heart-warming of all his symphonies with a song of
child-like innocence in praise of heavenly life. That same tantalising simplicity
informs the magical slow movement of Mozart’s K467 Piano Concerto.

city means that there are restricted car parking
arrangements at the venue and only limited car
parking facilities nearby. Travelling by public
transport to De Montfort Hall is relatively easy
and because of the limited car parking is strongly
recommended when attending performances and
events at the Hall. We advise that you allow plenty
of time for your journey and parking so as not to
miss performance start time.
By Bus
De Montfort Hall can be easily reached by a number
of bus routes close to the venue with the nearest bus
stops at London Road and University Road. For up to
date details or to find your best route call Traveline on
0871 200 2233 (calls cost 10p per minute plus any
charges your network provider makes) or visit

spaces located next to the venue off University Road.
This car park is only available to customers on evenings
and weekends and must be pre-booked through our
Box Office. Disabled access parking for a performance
at De Montfort Hall is available free of charge and must
be pre-booked through our Box Office.

and, if available, can be purchased up until 5pm on
the day of an evening performance or up to 2 hours
before a weekend matinee performance. Parking for
customers who have not pre-booked is £5 on arrival
to the car park.
There are two public car parks situated within a
5-minute walk of the venue - Victoria Park Pay &
Display car park with 133 spaces (6 disabled bays)
and Granville Road Pay & Display with up to 65
spaces. Both of these car parks are not administered
or associated to De Montfort Hall.
Please be aware that on popular and sell-out
performances, or if there are other events nearby,
both of these public car parks can quickly become full

Drinks
Bar Hours
Bars open one hour before show start time and close
11pm or 30 minutes after show end time, whichever
is later. Please note that some private hire shows
do not request bar service. We reserve the right to
modify bar closing times for late night events or at
times of low after show patronage. Please ask our
friendly bar staff on the night for that evening’s
performance bar opening times.
Drinks in the Auditorium
Depending on the show’s format you may or may
not be able to bring drinks into the auditorium of
De Montfort Hall. You are welcome to take your drinks
into the ground floor only of the auditorium for dance
floor or cabaret formats, as well as major festivals.
However, they must be decanted into plastic cups.
For standing gigs, only plastic bottles with their tops
removed will be allowed. For seated shows, alcoholic,
open top, or hot drinks are not permitted, although
cartons and plastic bottled water are allowed. Alcoholic
beverages are never permitted in the balcony area.
Interval Drinks
Beat the rush - order and pay for your interval drinks
at the bar before the start of most shows. Please note
interval drinks may not be available for all performances.
Proof of Age
If you are fortunate enough to look under 21,
we may ask you to prove you are 18 or over.
We accept the following: passport, photo driving
licence or government ‘prove it’ card.
Seating Plan
This seating plan gives a general
overview of the main auditorium
in a standard tiered seating format.
Due to the great variety of events
we put on at the hall we have other
formats that we use such as standing,
dance floor (with limited table
spaces) and flat floor seating.
Drinks can be taken in downstairs
for the dance floor format only.
Even the tiered format shown
here can change. For example,
for musicals the front row will
normally be row F.
We hope the image will assist
you when choosing your seats,
but would recommend that you
check with Box Office staff
exactly which format is being
used for any given event before
purchasing your tickets.
Wheelchair places
Wheelchair spaces are available in the auditorium and their position for
each show depends on the set-up of the performance. Please contact
the Box Office at dmh on 0116 233 3111 to book a wheelchair space.
The information contained in this brochure is correct at the time of going to print. Late bookings which miss the
brochure’s copy deadline will be advertised in the local press, on www.demontforthall.co.uk and via our email
