Students in the Year 8, 9 and 10 Art Excel class
recently attended the exhibition TV Moore: With
Love and Squalor at the Australian Centre for
Contemporary Art. The exhibition was a solo show
of works by the Australian artist, TV Moore, and
featured his video and sound works, as well as
digital paintings displayed within a bright blue tiled
environment. The work considered society’s
consumption of technology and media across high
and low culture.
The students were given a guided tour of the
exhibition and they then participated in a practical
workshop, where they learnt to create a zoetrope.
All students had an interesting and enjoyable
afternoon.

The Nubian Gents
On Friday the 28th of August The Nubian Gents, a
dance team from Queens in New York, performed
for students in Years 7-10.
BACKGROUND OF THE DANCE TEAM
In 1994, educator Lamont O’Neil became acutely
aware of a crisis confronting teenage males in the
Junior High School in where he worked. He saw an
evident lack of self-esteem, negative identity and
low perception of personal capability. Concerned,
he decided to introduce these young men to a male
fraternity-style step group designed to give them
positive and productive affiliation. 100 young men
in Springfield Gardens (Queens) enlisted and the
Nubian Gents were born. To this day, what began as
a step group continues to change lives of the young
men who come through this program and of
audience members. The Gents have toured England,
Netherlands, Germany, Czech Republic, Belgium,
South Africa, Spain, Australia, Singapore, New
Zealand and Guatemala, sharing their message of
hope, passion and love of the arts.

optimistic. It started with a number of breathtaking
urban and rhythmic dances. The leader of the group
then spoke and sung about many inspirational
messages relating to love and self worth. Overall the

loved how they transformed a self-esteem
workshop into an exciting and engaging dance
performance. Some students tend to always tune
out whenever they do workshops like this, but
because they didn’t realise what it was the
performers had the kids hooked when they broke
out into hiphop, step and breakdancing!”

Immunisation
Final immunisation visit for the year on Tuesday,
8th September. Final HPV & Boostrix for Year 7s & Boostrix
(diphtheria tetanus whooping cough ) for Yr 8s.
Reminder for parents that this is your last opportunity for
your child to receive a free Diptheria tetanus whooping
cough injection as next year it will only be available free to
Year 7s. If you would like a consent form you can contact

Year 11 VCAL
Our Year 11 VCAL Personal Development Skills class is
continuing our work on the garden for the purpose of growing
crops to contribute to a charity by the name of FareShare who
will use our contribution to give to the homeless and
disadvantaged of our community.
We are in the early stages at this point and have split into
three teams so we can complete the project quicker. The
construction group is putting together the garden beds; the
gardening group is putting in the soil; and the
communications group is organizing to meet with other
contributors to the project and spreading the word about
what’s being planned.
We are having a great time working on this project as it is rare
chance for us to contribute to both the community, as well as
a way to give back to the school which has taught us for so
long.

Italiano!
Students have been having a great time in Year 8 Italian this
year! They have studied three major topics so far “Buon Viaggio”, “Buon Appetito” and “Casa Dolce Casa”. Below
are student interviews outlining what we’ve done so far and
their thoughts:
“I thought the excursion Term 2 was really fun! After spending
the term learning how to talk about food in Italian and it’s
significance within the Italian culture, we went to Ti Amos in
Lygon Street for lunch. We had to order our food and drinks in
Italian, otherwise we didn’t get to eat! It was terrific to really
apply what we had learnt in class to an authentic experience. It
was also a very interesting way to experience Italian culture.”

“It was really good to use the skills we learnt in class in a
real-life experience. It really showed us that what we do in class
actually can help us! We all loved the excursion”.

“When we went to the restaurant we were able to apply what
we learnt in class, which really helped to improve our
confidence levels”.

“During Term 1 we learnt the words needed to navigate
ourselves around a city in Italy. We had to then create an Italian
Itinerary and write things in Italian about transport, time, verbs
and monuments in famous Italian cities. I loved this task
because I could be really creative and apply my graphic design
skills”.

“The Italian Itineraries were a really good learning experience
because we got to learn a wide array of grammatical concepts,
sentence structure and words that are really relevant if we were
to go to Italy.

This term students will be publishing their own Italian websites
