





Talk to Industry reps/advisors/instructors and ask them to refer students your way.
Professional associations/local employers/former students - let them know about
new classes; they might help publicize them.
Post fliers/posters (in your office, hallways, classrooms, etc.)
Attend/Speak at career fairs at primary and secondary schools. Hand out
promotional items.
Announce your classes during the term before your classes begins
Send e-mail messages to students suggesting they consider enrolling in your
classes.



Ask your department/school/instructors to add info about your classes in other
relevant classes.
Competition - Recognize competition to the course. Make your offering more
attractive. (Short term/hybrid/cost/books/flex schedules)
Competitions – Participate in relevant competitions (puts you on map)
Keep promoting, never stop promoting.
Students sign up after class starts.
Many students are procrastinators.
Send them reminders, and the more informative those reminders are the
better.
Former students are great promoters
Student Retention The class of 2016 grew up in cyberspace, a factor that has
increasingly influenced how today's students approach learning.
• Younger generation - 241 social media friends, but they have trouble
communicating in person
• Electronically far more sophisticated than their parents or teachers, yet
somewhat unprepared for the real world. Coddled, entitled and dependent?
• Students of all ages entering college with questions about jobs, whether the
college degree/certificate has value. Also - I’m to old, to young, no
experience, overqualified, etc.
• Helping students gain confidence that they can do it and be
successful.
• Understand what makes generations unique and different.
• We do need to understand who we are teaching. Keep up with
what’s trending in students’ world’s—from what movies they’re
watching on their tablets to what’s playing in their ears.
• It could mean adapting teaching styles to accommodate the
learning needs of students.
(Demographics/languages/ages/full time/ two jobs/ four kids, etc.?)
• Rethink “all-knowing teachers.” Offering students the
opportunity to “teach” their peers. (Clubs/extra credit?)
• Teacher not perfect, they just want to know that we are
willing to work with them.
• Try a humorous/simplified approach. (Bob and Mary)
In the Fall 2015 semester, more than 16% of our students withdrew
from one or more classes the first week they were on our campus,
and more than 4% completely withdrew from Chaffey College
during that same time. These students were registered attended at
least one class, but for one reason or another, did not return. ????
• This semester, we will have 10 booths across multiple campuses to
provide access and information to help students get to their classes
and become aware of support services and reinforce their belief
that they should be in college. (Retention)
Do not overwhelm in first class meeting – give a strong start!
