5 WAYS TO HELP
A
S YOU KNOW, I started the Sarah Jane
Brain Foundation in 2007, naming it
after my daughter who was violently shaken
by her baby nurse, breaking four ribs, both
collarbones, and causing a severe brain injury
when she was only five days old. While Sarah
Jane cannot walk on her own or speak words
yet – some day she will!! As her daddy, my job
is to change the world for her and millions of
others suffering from the #1 cause of death and
disability of American youth: brain injury. Over
765,000 American youth enter an Emergency
Room each year with a new brain injury, over
80,000 are hospitalized and over 11,000 die –
annually! Since we launched, SJBF has grown
into one of the leading organizations in the
world working to prevent, identify, treat, and
eventually cure brain injury.
It doesn’t matter whether the cause of the
brain injury was a motor vehicle crash, a sports
concussion, or a stroke, the system of care for
the millions of American families is arbitrary
from state to state, random from one school
district to another, and a crap shoot from doctor
to doctor. SJBF has made major progress
towards systematic change by establishing the
most esteemed International Advisory Board
which created the National Pediatric Acquired
Brain Injury Plan (PABI Plan). The PABI Plan

develops a seamless, standardized, evidencebased system of care that is universally
accessible for the millions of American families
who have a child with an acquired brain
injury. Since the PABI Plan was developed in
2009, our main focus has been on funding
and implementing the $2.9 billion, seven year
initiative. In 2015, in consultation with the White
House and Members of Congress, we revised the
funding of the PABI Plan to involve the private
sector along with the federal government and

A MESSAGE FROM OUR FOUNDER
“
My job is to change the world
for millions suffering from the #1
cause of death and disability of
American youth: brain injury.”
we will have some major announcements in 2016
towards implementing the PABI Plan.
While SJBF has been working globally, there
were no schools in New York City focused on
students like Sarah Jane with brain injuries
or brain-based disorders. So in 2013, SJBF
launched a subsidiary, the International
Academy of HOPE (iHOPE), with six students
in my living room in Northern Manhattan. Since
then, iHOPE has grown into a 10,000 square
foot facility in Central Harlem, with 31 students,
over 60 full-time professional staff of Physical
Therapists, Occupational Therapists, SpeechLanguage Therapists, Vision Therapists, Special
Educators, Nurses and paraprofessionals and an
annual budget over $5 million. As you can see on
the pages throughout this annual report, iHOPE
is having a direct, immediate impact on the lives
of our students, families, and staff!
2016 is going to be a very exciting year as
we continue to work towards implementing
the PABI Plan, expanding iHOPE in New
York City and making plans to replicate the
program in other cities across the country
and around the world. We are also making
plans to add a clinical component to iHOPE,
The International Center of HOPE, as well as a
research component, The International Institute
of HOPE. iHOPE Center will be an outpatient
iv
clinic providing much-needed medical and
therapeudic services to our students outside
of the school setting as well as the brain injury
community at large (i.e., dental, nutritional,
evaluations, etc). iHOPE Institute will be the
cornerstone of applied research from the work
done at the school to breakthrough therapeudic
and medical services done at iHOPE Center (i.e.,
stem cell research).
Every 40 seconds another American family is
entering an Emergency Room with their child
suffering from a new brain injury. We have a lot
of work to do!
Please come by and visit iHOPE when you are
visiting Central Harlem in New York City. I will
be sure to introduce you to my daily inspiration,
Sarah Jane, who continues to make progress
every day!! Remember our philosophy is “Things
work out best for those who make the best out
of the way things work out!”

iHOPE AQUATIC PROGRAM
This summer we teamed up with the NYC
YMCA to get students out of the classroom
and into the pool! Our new aquatic program
allows therapists from each discipline to
collaborate and work with students. The aquatic
environment improves physical functioning,
alleviates stress, encourages a wider range
of movement with less resistance and boosts
self-esteem.

Our multidisciplinary model affords educators
and therapists an opportunity to collaborate,
and provide students with the best curriculum
of care. This year our team implemented 3 new
programs, which promote the social, mental,
and physical well-being of every student.
Designed and implemented by the talented and
inspiring Alba Somoza, the program is tailored
to the unique needs of our student population.
Alba, diagnosed with cerebral palsy at a young
age, has a deep understanding of the challenges
each iHOPE student faces. Her program has
given each student the opportunity to learn that
creative self-expression knows no limits.
45
In 2015 we raised over $110,000
to support our growing student
population, the expansion of our
professional staff and the addition
of beneficial school programs.
Over $110,000 raised.
NEW PROGRAMS
ART CLASSES
Our new art program offers students an opportunity to exercise decision-making, strengthen their
fine motor skills, benefit from sensory integration
and express themselves creatively.
Highlights
3 newly funded programs.
At a total of 31 students, iHOPE has reached
peak enrollment for our current 10,000 sq. ft.
facility and we are in the beginning phases
of expanding to a larger facility in order to
accommodate our goal of 50 students.

NEW STAFF
“
At iHOPE, we provide each student with the
individualized care and attention he or she
needs. Every student is continuously supported
by a multidisciplinary team of 7-10 staff
members who provide the education, therapy
and personal support necessary to ensure
students continue to progress.
The staff is wonderful—
kind, loving.... Every time I
stop by I hear them talking
to the children with lots of
Judith,
love and care.”

In 2015, our growing student population
required us to bring on additional staff, doubling
the size of each department. Additional
Therapists, Educators, Administrators and
Paraprofessionals mean bigger opportunities,
more ideas and a greater potential for iHOPE
to advance evidence-based services for the
brain injury population. Our experienced,
credentialed and licensed teachers and
therapists work collaboratively with brain injury
specialists across numerous disciplines at the
city’s renowned medical centers, rehabilitation
centers and academic institutions on a variety
of research projects specifically designed to
enhance current practice and discover new
methods to support learning and rehabilitation.
Each student is supported by a caring paraprofessional.

Physical Therapy
Our PT Department specializes in individualized treatment programs that
improve function and assist with equipment/orthotic management in order
to prevent contractures and physical deformity.
We provide outcome-based implementation to
give ongoing feedback to parents and health
providers regarding our children’s progress.
Our services address neuromuscular/ orthopedic challenges and related manifestations
resulting from an underlying brain injury and
brain-based disorder. We provide a safe and
interactive rehabilitation experience in order
to address ongoing challenges our children
face in the home and community. Our goal is
to ultimately provide the resources to improve
socialization, functional integration and quality
of life of the children we serve.

“
As an occupational

working at iHOPE. Each
day we use holistic
treatment techniques to
help our students achieve
goals such as using a
spoon to feed themseleves

so rewarding to be part of
our students progress.”
Our Occupational Therapy Department seeks to enhance student functioning
by providing hands-on intervention, remediation, and modification of the
environment so that each student can function as independently as possible
in their school environment and daily lives.
Occupational therapists address the physical,
cognitive, emotional, and sensory-perceptual
aspects of performance to create a holistic view
of the individual they are working with.
At iHOPE, the goal of Occupational Therapy is
to enhance participation and improve quality of
life through a neuro-occupation based model.
We look at the whole living experience from the
eyes of the student, their families, their friends
and their community. We enhance meaning in
participation while modifying, compensating
or training the student and those around them.
Using these methods and procedures, a student
learns to function as independently as possible
in their environment.

OUR TEAM
Offering a wide range of experience
and interests in different areas of the
field, our licensed Occupational Therapists have developed one of the most

Speech-Language Therapy
The iHOPE Speech Department focuses on oral motor/feeding therapy,
speech and language therapy and teaching students to use Alternative and
Augmentative Communication (AAC).
Our speech therapy program involves oral
communication with the incorporation of
PROMPT (Prompts for Restructuring Oral
Muscular Phonetic Targets) as well as AAC
devices. The majority of our students present
with mild to severe speech or language
problems and rely on AAC to supplement
existing speech or replace speech that is not
functional. Nevertheless, we always encourage
our students to continue to produce sounds. We
strongly believe that AAC users should continue
using speech, using AAC aids and devices to
enhance their communication.
OUR TEAM
With personalities as large as their department, our team of licensed Speech

Vision Education
The Vision Education program at iHOPE provides students with
individualized sessions that focus on developing each student’s visual
processing abilities.
Visual modifications and interventions are
implemented throughout the student’s day
in order to continuously develop the visual
pathways and processing systems in the brain.
The program is highly individualized, based on
assessments which guide the modifications and
interventions that are utilized for each student.
The vision department provides ongoing
training for all staff and paraprofessionals
regarding the nature of Cortical Visual
Impairment, the assessment process and the
process involved in implementing modifications
and interventions. The Vision Program actively
collaborates with many organizations in the
New York area, including SUNY College of

Conductive Education
iHOPE provides the only Conductive Education program in New York State.
Our Conductor-Teachers work with students in groups and individually,
providing them with the ideal conditions to achieve their goals.
Conductive Education (CE) was founded in the
1940s by Hungarian neurologist, Professor Andras
Peto. This psycho-educational approach focuses
primarily on the integration of the brain’s ability
to change and learn (neuroplasticity), the child’s
personality and lifestyle, as well as physiological
and medical characteristics of the child.
CE assumes motor disorders are learning
disabilities and approaches physical disabilities
from an educational rather than a medical or
paramedical perspective. The approach focuses
on reducing the physical effects of the disability
while encouraging motivation and active physical
participation, to become independent and
increase self-esteem.
The desired outcome is to internalize the intended
movement and achieve maximal independence
called orthofunction. Conductive education
improves the quality of life as well as the
psychological wellbeing of the child and family.
30
OUR TEAM
We value the experiences and insight our
Conductor-Teachers bring to the iHOPE
program. Each with a degree from the
Andras Peto Institute of Conductive Education and Conductor Training College
in Budapest, Hungary, the iHOPE CE
program offers a unique opportunity for
children to achieve their goals.

8:1:1 class settings to accommodate a range of
needs. While all students receive multi-sensory
instruction tailored to their specific cognitive
and communication needs, those in the 8:1:1
class receive additional academic interventions
due to their higher cognitive abilities or greater
physical independence.
Overall, teaching methods are integrated with
therapeutic techniques allowing students
to generalize skills across different contexts
and settings. Students use their strengths to
engage in activities designed to increase their
communication, social, and life skills.

OUR TEAM
Our dedicated and motivated academic
team is passionate about engaging with
students as they develop math, literacy
and communication skills. Teachers meet
regularly to share strategies to improve
each students attention, memory, executive
functioning, and behavior. They also collaborate with clinicians to implement the
most effective strategies for each student
during academic sessions

Omari
Vibrant and outgoing, Kristina has a
natural curiosity and an amazing
sense of humor. Just months into the
program, she isn’t just showing the
world what she can do, but who she
is. Go Kristina!
When Omari first began attending
iHOPE he was unable to extend his
legs or maintain his head upright,
only communicating with smiles to
confirm or reject questions.
Quickly progressing in the iHOPE program,
you can often hear Omari’s cheering section
filling the halls as he takes steps and vocalizes
his emotions. For the first time Omari is able to:
When Kristina joined iHOPE, she rarely used her
voice, could not walk or stand with stability, and
wasn’t performing basic activities of daily living.
Thanks to the intensive therapy offered at iHOPE,
Kristina has significantly strengthened her core,
upper extremities and communication skills. For
the first time Kristina is able to:
• Take over 100 steps in his gait-trainer.
• Associate meanings with words.
• Use a two hand switch to answer questions
accurately.
• Vocalize 16 new words including “I’m good”
and “I’m hungry.”
• Maintain his head upright for up to 7
seconds before resting.
• Show interest in book illustrations during
Vision
• Perform ADLs, such as hang up her coat, wipe
her face, brush her hair and use the potty.
• Velcro her own orthotics.
• Stand for a few seconds on her own.
• Walk with minimal assistance.
• Navigate herself in a power wheelchair.
• Use her communication device accurately.
• Communicate with multi-symbol
combinations.
• Use simple verbal speech.

we don’t have room to show them all!
Samandar, Age 9, 6:1:1 Class
Samandar
Samandar aka “Sammy” is often
described as playful, social and a
hard worker – sometimes even a
little mischievous!
Meeting him now you would never know that
just months ago he was unable to take a step
or walk, wasn’t using verbal language and
was unable to use his arms purposefully.
Working closely with our dedicated team has
motivated Sammy to persevere and make some
remarkable progress.
For the first time Sam is able to:
• Say “Mama” and “Daddy.”
• Approximate 4-5 words vocally.
• Recognize 8-10 symbols.
• Walk 7 laps using a walker.
• Pedal 26 times alone.
• Walk in his gait-trainer with supervision.
• Use his left hand to access multi-panel
switches accurately.

THE PABI PLAN
NATIONAL PEDIATRIC
AQUIRED BRAIN
INJURY (PABI) PLAN
52
number of lead
centers in the
PABI network
Thank you to all the families who supported iHOPE this year.
What is the PABI Plan?
The PABI plan was created in 2009 as the first initiative of the Sarah Jane
Brain Foundation. It is a seamless, standardized, evidence-based system of
care that is universally accessible to the millions of American families who
have a child or young adult with a brain injury, regardless of where they live
in the United States.
CATEGORIES OF CARE
Each category will establish a nationwide standard for collecting translational data, a standard
set of training, education and dissemination of
information, and the ability to develop and
monitor scientific investigative research.
1. Prevention
2. Acute Phase
3. Reintegration & Long-Term Care
4. Adult Transition
5. “Mild” TBI Identification, Assessment &
Treatment
6. Rural Tele-health
7. The Virtual SJBF Center
PABI REGIONS
To encourage increased regional collaboration,
the PABI Plan divides the country into seven
38
regions with seven or eight states/territories for
each region. Within each region there is a National
Lead Center which serves as that regions coordinating organization.
Northeast Region
Mid-Atlantic Region
Southeast Region
Mid-Central Region
South-Central Region
Rocky Mountain Region
Pacific Region

ANNUAL REPORT SARAH JANE BRAIN FOUNDATION • INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY OF HOPE
STATE LEAD CENTERS
In order to carry out this integrated seamless
system of care, a network of 52 Sarah Jane Brain
Foundation State Lead Centers of Excellence
have been created. Each State Lead Center
will work closely with existing partners in their
state and region to provide complete national
coverage and address their unique population
health needs.
