Pastor’s Corner
This month let me expand and
explain two follow-up offerings
from last month’s newsletter. In
last month’s newsletter I talked
briefly about two events that had
happened or will be happening at
Zoar Lutheran, 1) the formation
of the MSP Transition/Steering
Team and 2) the presentation on
understanding the Bible by Bishop
Dave Brauer-Rieke.

Allen Powell, Professor at Trinity Theological
Seminary in Columbus, Ohio. I quote:
Lutherans are not peculiar in how they
understand the Bible. Most of what we do
is pretty similar to what other Christians
do, but we sometimes do
put a little different spin on
things. We have our priorities
and our preferences, and
these sometimes lead us to
understand Scripture differently.
Perhaps the first and last thing
we should say about Lutherans
and the Bible is this: Lutherans
believe the Bible is the Word

Christians would say this—and they might

Caring for
Our Family
Please remember these members of Zoar who are no longer
able to participate as they once did. They have been active in Zoar’s
community in many ways. Now, as time makes it necessary for them
to slow down, they often become the prayer backbone of Zoar. Days
can get long though, and a visit from you can be so uplifting. Sending a
card or making a phone call can also brighten their day. (If you need an
address or phone number, please call the church office.)

Visits made as needed from 11am-3pm throughout the week
We are having email issues in the office, please assume

another notice once it is back up and running! If there is anything

principle because this, we believe, is how
God speaks to us and both must be held
together for God’s Word to be fulfilled. This
principle sounds so easy, but as we begin
to learn it and live by it, it becomes much
more difficult. This is so, perhaps, because
we do not like hearing God’s accusations
and judgments against us – the law. But this
is important to hear as God addresses each
of us personally and corporately.
MSP Team
Hopefully by the time this newsletter is
published and sent to all the households
at Zoar, the MSP Transition/Steering Team
will be planning. This team will consist of
9 members of Zoar - Amy Aamodt, Jim
Bernklau, Mary Eastman, Mary Herod,
Myron Mohr, Donna Pottratz, Mark Shearer,
Dave Wichman, and Dale Williamson. They
will have the responsibility of writing and
assembling the Ministry Site Profile (MSP).
In order to successfully navigate the
transition period, we will need to pay
attention to these Five Focus Points
developed by the Center for Congregational
Health:
Heritage
Mission
Leadership
Future
Connections
Heritage:
We will need to get a perspective on
ourselves as a church, as the Body of Christ
in the Canby community. We need to do
this intentionally, to step back, as it were,
and take a long, unhurried look at our “self”
to affirm and embrace the paths that have
brought Zoar Lutheran to the present. One
of the ways we will achieve this is to hear
again and re-tell the important stories that
made and brought Zoar Lutheran to this
point in its history. Through this process
of sharing and reflecting on our heritage,
personal and congregational core values
are uncovered and important rituals and
practices are recalled and reinterpreted.
There is no particular order to the Five Focus
Points. Yet, as we begin with Heritage it begins
to interact with the other points enabling us to
shift our attention from the past to a dynamic
present.
Please keep the MSP Transition/Steering
Team and the whole congregation in prayer
during this transition process.
Blessings,
Pastor Randy

That the whole church become more fluent
in the first language of faith, the language
of Scripture, in order that we might live into
our calling as a people renewed, enlivened,
empowered, and sent by the Word.
Our Lutheran Study Bible has several unique
features that can be used to support individual
study and reflection as well as group study
ranging from confirmation to various adult
learning settings. Each book of the Bible
includes a summary that contains historical
and contextual background information. Each
book of the Bible is accompanied by three types
of study notes and by faith-reflection questions.
The study notes and questions are designed
to aid your study, learning, ponderings, and
reflections on the Word of God.
Several people have express interest in
ordering a paperback edition. If we order
10+ Bibles, Augsburg-Fortress will give us a
25% discount.

Kyler, Raquel, and Pastor Randy attended
Confirmation Camp June 26 – July 1 at Camp
Lutherwood with three other ELCA churches
in our Oregon Trails Custer. What a great
time. Being together enabled us to share
teaching times, provide for more interactive
learning opportunities, and fellowship with
new friends.
The theme for Lutherwood this summer is
“Follow The Leader”; our teaching theme for
our group was on Seven Faith Practices:
Pray, Worship, Service, Giving,
Study, Encourage, Invite
Please keep Kyler and
Raquel in your prayers as they
continue their ‘affirmation of
baptism’ process.

Canby Community Dinner
Tuesdays, 5–6:30 pm
Canby Community
Dinner Update:
A group interested in continuing the
community dinner on Tuesday evenings has
gotten together with a plan to share cooking
responsibilities and will try to keep the event
going.
Anyone can still volunteer - there will be
sheets for each week under the mailboxes.
Also we will still need cookies on a regular
basis. We feel this is a way to help our
community and share God's love. We
certainly thank Bob and Sally for all their work
and appreciate their continuing assistance.
Please keep this event and participants in
your prayers.
Please prayerfully consider how you can get
involved - in any of the ways listed to the right.
We have served an average of 80 meals
each week in the past year!
We have several ways you can help:
-Help us get the word out, by
mentioning the dinner to others who
might be interested in attending or
helping
-Volunteer - we can always use
help with: setting up, cooking, serving
and cleaning up. You could help with
one or many of these for any dinner
we serve!
-We need donations of food or
financial support
-Especially, we need your prayers
and attendance at dinners
If you are interested or have questions,
just contact the Church Office.

Third Sunday each Month
Hello!

Let’s get better acquainted at Zoar! Third Sundays especially,
we encourage each member to wear their name tag. If you’ve
forgotten/lost your name tag, we can make one for you, just ask
the office. Meet someone new you haven’t visited with before!
Organized by the Evangelism Leadership Team
Help Our Furniture
Ministry Thrive!
All of us that work with and greet
clients at Love Inc thank all of you
for your continued generosity in
giving items for us to disperse.
Here are some items we need
as we move into our new digs:
Blankets of all sizes, toilet paper,
can opener, toasters, flatware,
measuring cups and spoons, coffee
makers, and bath towels.
Thanks to all of your generous hearts!
Items we cannot use: wine glasses,
curtains/drapes, big entertainment centers,
threadbare towels, stained linens, large
convection/microwaves, and pots/pans with
scratched teflon coating.
We know you wish to help, but these are
just not items our clients need. Our adage
is, "give them something useful and something
they would be proud to use" as we try to
respect and build up each one of our clients.
You have all been so
patient with the Shalom
building and the lengthy
wait on the garage rebuild.
It will be a superior option
for a mission building and
Love INC ministry.
Blessings to all, Mary

Craft Days
A group is meeting on most Wednesdays
to work on crafts for the November craft
fair. We meet from 1-3 pm If you have
ideas about crafts we can work on, please
bring them to the meetings. If you have any
questions or would like an email reminder
for work parties, please contact Betty
Lundsten or the Church Office.
Fair Trade Items
The fair trade cabinet will be open one
Sunday each month. If you would like to
purchase items from the Fair Trade cabinet
and it is not open that day, you may ask
one of the ZLCW Council members (Beth
Robles, Sharon Kubik, Carolyn Shearer,
Betty Lundsten, or Di Bernklau) we will open
it up if someone is available.
Zoar Sewing Circle: Fall Updates
Jennifer Benz and Karen Brennan took over
as co-chairs this year. We have been busy all
summer, meeting once a month to sew and
organize our community outreach. We want
to thank everyone who has been sewing at
home and donating supplies. We are looking
for new members as our Sewing Circle has
reduced in members.
We are kicking off 4 new evening sessions
on the first Wednesday of September,
October, November and January from 6-8pm.
Ages 10-100+ are encouraged to join Karen
and Jennifer at evening sessions! With these
additional sessions, we should be able to
continue to reach our goals to donate quilts
to Children’s Services.
We need people to assemble tops at home.
Free instructions and lessons are available.
All supplies are provided. Due to generous
donations we have acquired many new and
fun fabrics.
Help us to continue Zoar’s mission to children
and families in Clackamas County.
ALL are welcome: ladies & men, all ages
NO previous experience needed

Your thoughtfulness was greatly appreciated.

The 100-plus voice choir has members
from more than 80 churches and several
denominations performing old and new
sacred music in a variety of styles. They have
sung continuously since 1938. The repertoire
is broad, with music from traditional choral
to down home gospel, from tender to
majestic, with a variety of very talented
composers.

Our family would love to thank you all for
the beds and the dresser to give to our boys.
They have been sleeping so much better
since we got them. And thank you for all the
bedding and pots and pans you gave us. You
all have blessed us so much. Hope to see you
all this summer with some donations we will
bring you to give to other people like us who
really need a hand up.

As you travel this
summer, please keep in
mind the health kits that we
put together for Childrens'
Services. Along with quilts,
we give 100 health kits per year, and we are
always in need of travel size shampoo. If you
are buying travel shampoo, please consider
picking up an extra one for the health
kits. There is a box in the hallway for any
donations. Any questions, please contact
Penny Kissner 503-266-5788. Thank you for
your help!
