2. Complete Safe Environment Training every 3 years.

The 2015 Archbishop’s Appeal weekend will
take place the weekend of Feb 21-22. The campign

This week’s sharing: Preparing for Lent
Source: Code of Canon Law; Pastoral
Statement on Penance and Abstinence (PSPA)
We commonly hear that we are supposed to ‘give
up something for Lent” but there is much more to it.
During Lent we are encouraged to put more effort in
the practice of three things: 1) prayer, 2) almsgiving,
and 3) fasting.
The Code of Canon Law 1249 states in part:
“penitential days are prescribed on which the
Christian faithful devote themselves in a special way
to prayer, perform works of piety and charity, and
deny themselves by fulfilling their own obligations
more faithfully and especially by observing fast and
abstinence. The(se) prescribed days are “every Friday
of the whole year and the season of Lent.”
That said, “The conference of Bishops can
determine more precisely the observance of fast and
abstinence…”and in the US through the PSPA “we
make the entire Lenten season a period of special
penitential observance. “ Abstinence and fasting are
to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday
and “abstinence from meat on each of the Fridays of
Lent,” to unite us to the redemptive suffering and
death of the Lord.
Lent also brings forth a communal penitential
spirit beginning with Ash Wednesday. Fr. Robert
Barron says “it is the time when we consciously take
the time to raise our minds and hearts to God.” God
loves each one of us no more and no less than anyone
else. Lent is a good time to take inventory of our lives
and perhaps make another attempt at always putting
our Lord first.

after mass, beginning Sat, Feb 21—Sun, Feb 22.
If you wish to donate extra items, here’s a list
of items which will help the San Antonio Food Bank,
Catholic Charities, Society of St. Vincent de Paul and
our own House of Neighborly Service Food Pantry;
Peanut Butter, Canned Luncheon meats, Cereal,
Tuna, Beans, Rice, Macaroni & Cheese, Chili, Canned
Stews, Canned Soups, Full meals in a can/box and
“Pop Top” food items.
Your support over the last 4 years have equaled
240,000 pounds of food, plus cash donations to each
of the 4 charities.

FOR HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS
The Our Lady of Guadalupe ACTS community is offering two $500 college
scholarships.
To be eligible for the scholarship students must
belong to a registered parish family at Our Lady of
Guadalupe and a senior in high school planning to
attend College. This scholarship will be awarded to
an individual who has distinguished themselves academically and/or served actively within the Our Lady
of Guadalupe Community.

Our Knights of Columbus are
offering FOUR $600 grants for higher education to
our graduating high school seniors for the 2014-2015
school year.
Letter with instructions may be picked up at the
parish office and must be returned no later than
Tue, March 31, 2015. The names of the selected
scholarship applicants will be announced in April
2015.
Applicant must be a registered member of our
parish or applicant’s father must be a member in
good standing of Council 8306. Funds for these
educational grants are acquired through fundraising
activities sponsored by Council 8306.

generous support of all of our endeavors. We

I understand that Catholics ages 18 to 59 should
fast
on
Ash
Wednesday
and
on
Good
Friday, but what exactly are the rules for these
fasts?
Fasting on these days means we can have
only one full, meatless meal. Some food can be taken
at
t he

if
necessary, but combined they should be less than
a full meal. Liquids are allowed at any time, but
no solid food should be consumed between meals.
Are there exemptions other than for age from the
requirement to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good
Friday?
Those that are excused from fast and
abstinence
outside
the
age
limits
include
the physically or mentally ill including individuals
suffering from chronic illnesses like diabetes. Also
excluded are pregnant or nursing women. In all
cases, common sense should prevail, and ill persons
should not further jeopardize their health by fasting.

de febrero. La meta total de la campaña es de $4.5M.

ayudan a miles de personas en nuestra Arquidiócesis

LA NUEVA EVANGELIZACION
Compartimos esta semana: Preparación
para La Cuaresma
Procedencia: Código
de Derecho Canónico; Declaración Pastoral
Sobre La Penitencia y Abstinencia (DPPA)
Escuchamos a uno y a otro preguntar: ¿Qué cosa
vas a sacrificar para la Cuaresma? Es mucho más
que eso. La Cuaresma es un tiempo de poner más
atención 1) al ayuno, 2) la abstinencia, y 3) la
oración.
El Código de Derecho Canónico 1249 indica en
parte “se han fijado unos días penitenciales, en los
que se dediquen los fieles de manera especial a la
oración, realicen obras de piedad y de caridad y se
nieguen a sí mismos, cumpliendo con mayor fidelidad
sus propias obligaciones y, sobre todo, observando el
ayuno y la abstinencia…” Los días fijados son “todos
los viernes del año y el tiempo de cuaresma.”
Sin embargo, la Conferencia local del Obispos
tiene la autoridad para determinar cómo deberemos
observar el ayuno y la abstinencia.” En los Estados
Unidos, mediante la DPPA “hacemos de todo el
tiempo de Cuaresma, un periodo de observancia
penitencial especial.” Guardamos el “ayuno y
abstinencia el miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo
y nos abstenemos de carne en cada uno de los
Viernes de la cuaresma porque es lo que nos reúne al
sufrimiento redentora y muerte de Nuestro Señor.”
La Cuaresma también trae un espíritu de
penitencia comunal que empieza con el Miércoles de
Ceniza.
El Padre Robert Barron dice “es una
temporada en donde tomamos el tiempo de levantar
nuestras mentes y corazones al Dios.” Dios ama a
cada uno de nosotros, ninguno más o menos que el
otro. La Cuaresma es una oportunidad de tomar
inventario de nuestras vidas y hacer un esfuerzo de
siempre poner a Dios delante de todo.

Entiendo que los católicos edades entre 18 y 59
deberían ayunar el Miércoles de Ceniza y
el Viernes Santo, pero ¿qué son las reglas para
estos ayunos? El ayuno en estos días significa que
podemos tener sólo uno completo, comida sin
carne. Algunos alimentos se pueden tomar en los
otros tiempos de comida regulares si
es
necesario, pero combinado deben ser menos de una
comida completa. Los líquidos se permiten en
cualquier momento, pero no hay comida sólida se
deben consumir entre comidas.
¿Existen exenciones distintas de la edad de la
obligación de ayunar el Miércoles de Ceniza y el
Viernes Santo? Las que se excusado de ayuno y
abstinencia fuera de los límites de edad son las e
nfermedades físicas o mentales, incluyendo los
individuos que sufren de enfermedades crónicas
como la diabetes. También se excluyen las mujeres
embarazadas o en lactancia. En todos los casos,
el sentido común debe prevalecer, y las personas
enfermas no debe poner en peligro aún más su salud
por el ayuno.
