The Théâtre du Thé des Bois: A unique summer theatre
The Petit-Lac-Magog sector, which has been known as Deauville
since 1945, has long been known for its vacation areas. That being
said, it’s not just big city folks who enjoy the area, artists do too.
In 1968, André Poulain founded the Théâtre du Petit Thé des Bois
and chose as its location a plot of land belonging to his father, in a
glade in Deauville.
It was an open-air venue where amateur theatre troupes performed
in the summer. The theatre was set up in a period of time when there
were very few summer theatres in the province. It was located in a
small space, which felt cosy but not cramped. It could accommodate
50 or so people during performances. The outdoor stage gave it
a novel, enchanting air, but it also made the theatre dependent
on the weather. The Théâtre du Thé des Bois was one of the first
unconventional theatres in the region: its creativity influenced a
number of other troupes that would emerge in the early 1970s.
Between 1969 and 1974, André Poulain and Jacques Couture wrote
five plays, in the style of musicals, in which singing played a major
role. The Manoir du crime was performed in the summer of 1970
and was described as a whimsical vaudeville show full of humour.
Despite its enviable success, the theatre closed its doors in 1974,
when several of its members were attracted to other projects.
However, its story didn’t end there. In 1977, the theatre company
changed its name to the Théâtre Entre Chien et Loup and was
relaunched through a partnership between André Poulain and
Normand Labelle. The theatre troupe produced shows in various
venues in the Eastern Townships. Four years later the Théâtre du
Thé des Bois’ performance hall was reopened, after undergoing a
makeover.

While nature still played a role, the exclusively outdoor presentation
of the performances fell to the wayside. The year 1983 marked
the end of the network of balconies and tunnels that had been an
integral part of the productions, and the hall, which could then hold
80 to 100 spectators, had (finally, many would say) been entirely
closed in. From 1981 to 1986, the Théâtre Entre Chien et Loup was
the regular tenant at the Théâtre du Thé des Bois.
Following disagreements with Labelle, Poulain quit the
Théâtre Entre Chien et Loup and founded a new theatre company,
the Théâtre du Thé des Bois (Inc.). Once again, beginning
in 1987, the company presented amateur summer theatre. Its
first production, Un condo à Venise, was written in a bit of a
hurry, but the result of the collective effort was a success. No less
than seven writers, including Hervé Dupuis, François Lanctôt,
and André Poulain had a hand in it, and the play was sold
out! From 1987 to 1995, the company wrote, produced, and
presented one play per year for the general public. Among them,
L’ArbrAlettre s’illumine (1989), written for International Literacy
Year, Faut pas payer, written by Dario Fo and coproduced by
the Théâtre du Thé des Bois and the Théâtre l’Aire de Jeu, and
Les Jardins de Clémence (1995), written by Clémence Desrochers.
Despite its leading position on Deauville’s tourist program in the
early 1990s, the Théâtre du Thé des Bois closed its doors for good
at the end of the 1995 summer season. And so a page was turned
in the region’s cultural community. The Théâtre du Thé des Bois
was known for its boldness, its innovation, its desire to shine the
spotlight on local talent, and its goal of promoting awareness and
enjoyment of unconventional theatre.
