First Sunday of Lent
Gn 2:7-9, 3:1-7; Ps 51; Rom 5:12-19 or 5:12, 17-19; Mt 4:1-11
This is the First Sunday of Lent, the liturgical Season of 40 days which constitutes
a spiritual journey in the Church of preparation for Easter. Essentially it is a matter
of following Jesus who is walking with determination towards the Cross, the
culmination of his mission of salvation. If we ask ourselves: “Why Lent? Why the
Cross?”, the answer in radical terms is this: because evil exists, indeed sin, which
according to the Scriptures is the profound cause of all evil […]
In the face of moral evil God’s attitude is to oppose sin and to save the sinner.
God does not tolerate evil because he is Love, Justice and Fidelity; and for this
very reason he does not desire the death of the sinner but wants the sinner to
convert and to live. […] For this reason God sent his Son into the world: to set
men and women free from the domination of Satan, “the origin and cause of
every sin”. God sent him in our mortal flesh so that he might become a victim of
expiation, dying for us on the Cross. The Devil opposed this definitive and
universal plan of salvation with all his might, as is shown in particular in the
Gospel of the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness which is proclaimed every
year on the First Sunday of Lent. In fact, entering this liturgical season means
continuously taking Christ’s side against sin, facing — both as individuals and as
Church — the spiritual fight against the spirit of evil each time (Ash Wednesday,
Opening Prayer).

FASTING
Christian fasting is revealed in an interdependence between two events in the Bible:
the “breaking of the fast” by Adam and Eve; and the “keeping of the fast” by Christ
at the beginning of his ministry. God had proclaimed a fast from the fruit of only one
tree, the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Gen. 2:17), and Adam and Eve broke it.
Christ, however, is the new Adam. At the beginning of his ministry in the Gospel of
Matthew, we read, “When He had fasted 40 days and 40 nights, He became hungry.”
Satan tempted both Adam and Christ. Adam believed and ate. Christ said, “Man does
NOT live by bread alone.” (Mt. 4:4; Lk. 4:4)
Christian tradition can name at least seven reasons for fasting:
1. From the beginning, God commanded some fasting, and sin entered into
the world because Adam and Eve broke the fast.
2. For the Christian, fasting is ultimately about fasting from sin.
3. Fasting reveals our dependence on God and not the resources of this
world.
4. Fasting is an ancient way of preparing for the Eucharist—the truest
of foods.
5. Fasting is preparation for baptism (and all the sacraments)—for the
reception of grace.
6. Fasting is a means of saving resources to give to the poor.
7. Fasting is a means of self-discipline, chastity, and the restraining of
the appetites.

Primer Domingo de Cuaresma

Hoy es el primer domingo de Cuaresma, el tiempo litúrgico de cuarenta días que
constituye en la Iglesia un camino espiritual de preparación para la Pascua. Se trata, en
definitiva, de seguir a Jesús, que se dirige decididamente hacia la cruz, culmen de su
misión de salvación. Si nos preguntamos: ¿por qué la Cuaresma? ¿Por qué la cruz? La
respuesta, en términos radicales, es esta: porque existe el mal, más aún, el pecado, que
según las Escrituras es la causa profunda de todo mal. […]
Ante el mal moral, la actitud de Dios es la de oponerse al pecado y salvar al pecador.
Dios no tolera el mal, porque es amor, justicia, fidelidad; y precisamente por esto no
quiere la muerte del pecador, sino que se convierta y viva. Por esto, Dios envió a su
Hijo al mundo: para liberar a los hombres del dominio de Satanás, “origen y causa de
todo pecado”. Lo envió a nuestra carne mortal para que se convirtiera en víctima de
expiación, muriendo por nosotros en la cruz. Contra este plan de salvación definitivo
y universal, el Diablo se ha opuesto con todas sus fuerzas, como lo demuestra en
particular el Evangelio de las tentaciones de Jesús en el desierto, que se proclama
cada año en el primer domingo de Cuaresma. De hecho, entrar en este tiempo
litúrgico significa ponerse cada vez del lado de Cristo contra el pecado, afrontar —
sea como individuos sea como Iglesia— el combate espiritual contra el espíritu
del mal (Miércoles de Ceniza, oración colecta).

AYUNO
El ayuno cristiano es revelado en una interdependencia entre dos hechos en la Biblia:
el “rompimiento del ayuno” por Adán y Eva; y el “mantener el ayuno” por Cristo en
el comienzo de su ministerio. Dios proclamó un ayuno de la fruta de un árbol, el
árbol del conocimiento del bien y del mal (2:17), y Adán y Eva rompieron ese ayuno.
Cristo, sin embargo, es el nuevo Adán. Al principio de su Ministerio en el Evangelio
de Mateo, leemos: “y después de ayunar cuarenta días con sus cuarenta noches, al fin
sintió hambre.” Satanás tentó a Adán y a Cristo. Adán creyó y comió. Cristo dijo,
“No solo de pan vive el hombre”. (Mt. 4:4; LC. 4:4)
La tradición cristiana puede nombrar al menos siete razones para el ayuno:
1. Desde el principio, Dios ordenó un ayuno, y el pecado entró en el mundo
debido a que Adán y Eva rompieron el ayuno.
2. Para el cristiano, el ayuno es en última instancia, el ayuno del pecado.
3. El ayuno nos revela nuestra dependencia de Dios y no de los recursos de
este mundo.
4. El ayuno es una antigua forma de preparación para la Eucaristía —
el más verdadero de los alimentos.
5. El ayuno es la preparación para el bautismo (y todos los sacramentos) —
para la recepción de la gracia.
6. El ayuno es una forma de ahorrar recursos para dar a los pobres.
7. El ayuno es un medio de auto-disciplina, castidad y la restricción de
los apetitos.
