‘THIRD YEAR B.ARCH ACADEMIC STUDY TOUR’
Title: Third Year B. Arch. Study Tour - 2015-16 to Ahmedabad – Baroda- Surat
Duration: Thursday, 26th November, 2015 to 4th December , 2015.

Purpose of the Study Tour:
The main aim of the Study Tour was to introduce the students with variety of projects and
Architectural Styles created by great Architects Like Le Corbusier, Louis I. Kahn, Hashmukh
Patel, B. V. Doshi , Bimal Patel, Karan Grover and many more. This will surely broaden their
vision towards the Architecture Career.
There was no better places than Ahmedabad- Baroda and Surat Circuit to achieve the aim
mentioned above. The tour was well planned four months before the dates. The co-ordinators
of tour had applied formally through Principal’s portal to the respective Authorities and got
the permissions well before time. This helped to schedule the timings of visits well in
advance.

2nd Day:- Friday, 27th Nov. 2015
Reached Ahmadabad station at 8:00 am. The check-in was done in Hotel at 9:00 am (Hotel
Le Grand, Paldi).After breakfast, the actual tour started.
IIM (Old/ New) Ahmadabad at 9:30 Am
The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad is a public business school located in
Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India.The IIM . old campus is spread over 67 acres and was designed
by the famed American Architect Louis I. Kahn. The buildings of the old campus use
exposed brick masonry as the primary building material.
New campus designed by HCP Design and Project Management Pvt. Ltd. spread over 39
acres. The buildings of the new campus use exposed concrete as the primary building
material with fenestrations in a combination of mild steel and wood.

Back to hotel for lunch at 1:00 pm. After lunch, students visited to:
NID Ahmadabad at 2.30 pm,
The National Institute of Design is a design school in Ahmedabad, India. The students had
observed the Architectural style, space characteristics, relationship between indoor and
outdoor activities etc of the design institute.

CEPT Ahmadabad at 4.30 pm,
The Centre for Environmental Planning & Technology, designed by Architect B.V. Doshi in
Navarangpura, Ahmedabad. Ar. Doshi has used materials like exposed brick with concrete,
emphasising the slabs and the beams to create a natural coarse texture.
Hussain Doshi Gufa (CEPT campus)
Amdavad ni Gufa is an underground art gallery designed by the Architect B.V. Doshi and
Artist M. F. Hussain. The gallery represents a unique juxtaposition of architecture and art.
Kankaria lake at 07:30 Pm.
Kankaria Lake is the biggest lake in Ahmedabad in the state of Gujarat. A lakefront has been
developed around it, which has many public attractions such as a zoo, toy train, kids city,
tethered balloon ride, water rides, water park, food stalls, and entertainment facilities.

Riverfront at Shahibaug at 8:30 am
The park is envisaged as an extension of Gandhiji’s Sabarmati Ashram, across the river,
providing a serene and contemplative backdrop to the Ashram and maximising this vista.
Gandhi Aashram at 10:30 am
The ashram now has a museum, the Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya. This had originally been
located in Hridaya Kunj, Gandhi's own cottage in the ashram. Then in 1963, having been
designed by the Architect Charles Correa, the museum was built
.
Sanskaar Kendra Museuam at 12:00 pm
Sanskar Kendra is a museum at designed by the architect Le Corbusier. It is a city museum
depicting history, art, culture and architecture of Ahmedabad. Another Patang Kite
Museum is there which includes a collection of kites, photographs, and other artefacts.
Tagore Memorial Hall at 12:30 pm
Tagore Memorial Hall was designed by the Architect Balkrishna Doshi. The hall is named in
memory of Rabindranath Tagore a famous Bengali poet, novelist, musician, painter and
playwright, who helped shape both Indian and Bengali culture.
Back to hotel for lunch at 1:30 pm
After lunch visited to:
Manek Chowkat 3:00 pm
Manek Chowk is a prominent city square in Old Ahmedabad. It is surrounded by historical
structures.
Patang hotel 7:00 pm
Patang hotel is Revolving tower restaurant offering city views and serving Continental,
Chinese and Indian food.
Drive-In Theater 10:00 pm
A drive-in theatre is a form of cinema structure consisting of a large outdoor movie screen,
a projection booth, a concession stand and a large parking area for automobiles. Within this
enclosed area, customers can view movies from the privacy and comfort of their cars.
4rd Day:- Sunday 29th Nov. 2015

Heritage walk Ahmadabad at 8:30 am
In heritage walk observe the nature of its rich and varied architecture, its art, religious places,
its culture and traditions of architecture.
Adalaj Ni Vav at 11:30 am
Adalaj stepwell is a unique hindu 'water building' is intricately carved and is five stories deep.
After lunch visited to:
Modhera Sun Temple at 2:30 pm
The Sun temple is of a unique architecture. The temple comprises three separate, axially
aligned and integrated elements: Surya Kund, Sabha Mandap and Guda Mandap.
Akshardham Temple at 2:30 pm
Akshardham Temple is Modern 10-story temple monument with elaborately carved
sandstone facade & nightly water/laser show.
5rd Day:- Monday 30th Nov. 2015
After Breakfast Visited to
Sangath.-Vastu Shilpa Consultantsvastu Shilpa Foundation. At 10:00am
B.V.Doshi. Housed in the 'Sangath', which itself is an icon of Doshi's work, the firm has
works in a variety of fields including architecture, urban planning, housing etc.
Mahatma Gandhi Labour Institute Ahmdabad At 11:00 am
Mahatma Gandhi Labour Institute is Institute for studies in the field of Labour Employment
to be set up at Ahmedabad, designed by architect Shri B.V. Doshi.
Gujarat High Court At 12:00 pm
The Gujarat High Court is the High Court of the state of Gujarat. It was established on 1
May 1960 under the Bombay Re-organisation Act, 1960 after the state split from Bombay
State. Designed by HCP Design and Project Management Pvt. Ltd. (HCPDPM).
Back to hotel for lunch at 1:00 pm
After lunch visited to:
Wagh Bakri Tea House Ahamdabad at 2.30 pm.
Wagh Bakri is one of the well-known tea blenders of Ahmedabad. The company, which used
to operate from disparate offices, commissioned HCP to design its headquarters, to
consolidate all its operations in a single building.

Check in Vadodara hotel at 9:30pm Sayaji Hotel, Vadodara.
6rd Day:- Tuesday 1st Dec. 2015
After Breakfast Visited to
Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda At 9:30 am
Observed the architecture department of MS university. Conducted interaction between the
architecture faculty of ms university and students.
Lukshmi Villas Palace VadodaraAt 12:00 pm
Lukshmi Villas Palace (Lukshmi Vilas Palace), the magnificent residence of the royal family
of Baroda was built by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III in 1890 with Major Charles Mant as
the chief Architect.
Back to hotel for lunch at 1:00 pm
After lunch visited to:
Navrachana University Vadodara at 2.30 pm.
Observed the architecture department and work of Navrachana university. Conducted
interaction between the architecture faculty of Navrachana university and students.
7th Day:- Wednesday 2nd Dec. 2015
After Breakfast Visited to
Karan Grover Architect Office at 10:00am.
Conducted interaction between architect Karan Grover and student. Karan Grover has been
passionately advocating the need to look at ones culture and heritage for clues as to the
direction for a contemporary architecture and sustainable development relevant to the Indian
context today.
Dipen Gada Architect at 11:30am.
Conducted interaction between Architect Dipen Gada and student. Ar. Dipen Gada and
Associates, which is popularly known as DGA, is a very modest interior design firm.
After lunch visited to:
Champaner Fort at 4:00am.
Champaner is located at a distance of 50 km from Baroda. The historical monuments at
Champaner consist of a series of fortifications. The structures represent a perfect blend of
Hindu-Moslem architecture, mainly in the Great Mosque (Jami Masjid), which was a model
for later mosque architecture in India.
After Visit Proceed To Surat:
Check in Surat hotel at 9:30pm Budget Inn Bellevue, Surat.
8th Day:- Thursday 3nd Dec. 2015
After Breakfast Visited to
Surat Science Center at 10:00am.
Science Centre, Surat is a multi-facility complex in Surat. The complex houses a Science
Centre, museum, an art gallery, an auditorium, an amphitheatre and a planetarium.
Proceeded for Railway Station, Return Journey by AHINSA EXPRESS from 08:00 Pm
onwards
9th Day:- Friday 4nd Dec. 2015
Arrived at Pune Station, at 04:40 am and departed for Baramati, reached VPSOA at 7:30am.
Overall the tour solved the purpose of the Study and it was quite satisfactory in terms of
Places visited, Food, Accommodation and Local Travelling.
