March 17 - Hosted by Les Mars Hotel
The Mars family follows the philosophy that patrons
should be treated more like visiting friends than
guests, and upon entering the lobby, visitors are
welcomed to the warm smiles of the Swiss-trained
hotel staff, unique 17th and 18th century antiques,
and a comfort found only at the home of a very good
friend.
April 21 - Hosted by Limerick Lane Cellars
Limerick Lane Cellars is an Estate winery three miles
south of the Healdsburg Downtown Plaza. Proprietor
and Winegrower Michael Collins has been farming
the land for over 34 years. The vineyard dates back
to 1910 and there are some vines from that era still
in production! Limerick Lane Cellars produces
handcrafted, award-winning Zinfandel, Syrah, Pinot
Noir and other small lot estate wines.

Increasing Efficiency through
Tech in the Conference Room
There are common frustrations people experience
in many business meetings. Companies all over are
wasting precious time and resources because they lack
the necessary tools to make meetings more efficient and
productive. Fortunately, technology has come a long
way in the meeting room. Companies are realizing the
benefits of tools such as fixed video displays, wireless
Internet access, electronic white boards and video
conferencing. Although some of the options may seem
a little unrealistic due to financial constraints, think
about what’s really being lost. Time = Money.
Here are a few tips about some technological
innovations that can improve your meetings by leaps
and bounds.
Wireless Internet Access: This lets
meeting attendees hook their laptops
up to the Internet during the meeting.
Meeting goers can access information
from the Web or the local network in
an instant, without interrupting the meeting to run to
their desks to get the information, making their time in
the meeting much more productive. An even simpler
setup for a conference room is a dedicated PC that can
be used for accessing files from the local network or
quickly surfing to a web page. These PCs can be used
for running PowerPoint presentations or conducting
internal training. Also, a good 3-in-1 scanner/printer/
copier is also a very helpful tool when conducting a
meeting. Of course, if your office is moving towards
more of a ‘paperless environment’ you might be better
suited with some form of online
document management and storage.
Online Document Management:
Now that you’re wired (or wireless)
for meetings, let’s talk about how
word processing and document
management are moving more and
more towards the Web these days. For some, the reason
is obvious; it’s accessible from anywhere, is open to
collaboration and sharing, is easy to import and export,
and in general is just a better way to do work in this
constantly connected world we live in.
Example? OK. Let’s say that you need to e-mail a
document to 6 co-workers. Essentially what you’re
doing is sending off 6 copies of the same document to
each of your e-mail recipients. If each of them makes
a change to the document and sends it back, you now
have 7 different versions of the same document to work
with.
Continued in next column....
May / June 2010
Continued...
Online Document Management services basically
flip this methodology. Instead of attaching one
document and sending it to several email addresses,
you’re actually attaching several email addresses to one
document. Everyone is editing the same file, and all the
changes are being tracked via a user-based timeline
within that document (varying upon your individual
user settings).
It might be kind of hard to wrap your head around
this idea at first, but once you’ve got your documents
online, there are numerous plug-ins that will allow you
to work with the software that you’re already familiar
with; MS Outlook, Gmail, Exchange, etc. GoogleDocs
is the 800 pound gorilla in the room when it comes
to this kind of stuff, but Adobe’s Buzzword, Zoho,
Etherpad and Peepel are all worth looking into.
Fixed Video Displays: These
are instrumental in letting all
participants easily view key charts,
presentations and other displays.
You will no longer need to huddle
around someone’s laptop to look
at a presentation or play a video.
Instead, you can sit back in your
seat while you easily view the material. Whether it’s a flat
panel LCD mounted on the wall or an image projected
onto a large screen, any presentation becomes much
more effective in drawing an audience’s attention.
Electronic Whiteboards: In most conference rooms
you see today, you’ll find a dry-erase board covered
with a variety of chicken scratch along with a note
that reads, “Do not erase!” Usually, it’s someone’s job
to take notes from the whiteboard and turn them into
digital copy. Electronic whiteboards save a lot time
and let each user participate to the fullest because
they transfer the content on the electronic whiteboard
to a local computer as digital files for storage and
dissemination. More advanced electronic whiteboards
can be interactive, letting users bring up a web page or
access a file with a finger or stylus, which in itself, can
be utilized to replace the aforementioned Fixed Video
Displays.
At the end of the day, all that really matters is that
the tools you have in your conference room enhance
your meetings, save you time and money, and keep the
participants engaged and productive. A couple of these
tools are very cost-effective with a huge ROI.
I know this article was kind of a “doosey”, but thanks
for hanging in there and getting through it. Please feel
free to give me some feedback.
Cheers. - Nick Young; [email protected]

Thunderbird Ranch
SummerDay Camp
“Where the Fun Never Sets”
For years, campers have returned to Thunderbird
Ranch in the heart of beautiful Alexander Valley with
its working General Store (open daily for snacks),
Train Depot, complete with authentic railroad cars and
other frontier buildings.
Thunderbird Ranch features an unforgettable summer
experience for a limited number of children between the
ages of 5 and 14, with an abundance of fun activities that
includes archery, mountain biking, western/English riding,
swimming, arts & crafts, farm animal care and much more.
In addition, we are known for our warm family atmosphere and highly skilled staff, who
provide the care, supervision and safety concerned parents have come to rely on for
over 45 years.
Camp counselors are carefully screened and chosen for
their specialized skills & experience. Great importance is
placed on maturity, integrity, sensitivity and the rapport
and communications they have with young people.
Waterfront activities are popular at Thunderbird
Ranch. We offer swim classes and pool games with
certified lifeguards on duty at all times.
We feature daily western / English riding lessons &
guided trail rids on over 500 acres, with horses and
instructors well suited for either the beginner,
intermediate, or advanced rider. Our motto is “the
outside of a horse is good for the inside of a child.”
