46th Annual Swimming Gala 2016
A splashing good time
By Gilbert Wong
Colourful flags lined the Keppel Club swimming annexe and upbeat music was pumped out of the
tentage setting the tone for this year’s 46th Annual Swimming Gala. The brilliant sunshine sparkled
across the pool as the eager competitors lined up along the side, anxiously waiting for their
names to be called before they could report for their respective races.
Some of the children had
their eyes on the many medals
and trophies on display behind the
podium while many of the younger
ones were looking forward to a
fun-filled day, simply having a good
time with friends in the water. No
matter what they were aiming for, it
promised to be a memorable day for
all who attended.
Once the horn sounded to
signal the start of the races, it
was a non-stop session of high
intensity action, with breaststroke,
freestyle, butterfly and backstroke
events taking place one after
another in quick succession.
Screams of excitement and cheers
of encouragement permeated the
air and the gala was livelier than
ever. Friends and family alike
provided support for their little ones
by the poolside as they propelled
themselves through the water with
all their might.
It wasn’t just the children who
got all the action as the parent and
parent-child relay races were two of
the most highly anticipated contests
of the day. It was heart-warming to
see the little boys and girls cheer
their siblings and parents on, phones
and cameras in hand to capture
every moment.
As the day went on, lap times
and results were being updated as
soon as they were available, and
Keppel Club staff preparing the medals and trophies for the eventual winners of the day.

many of the attendees were seen
crowding around the whiteboard
to see how well their children
performed. No matter what the
result, there were always high
fives, a pat on the back or a hug of
encouragement ready for them.
The prize presentation marked
the end of this spectacular event,
and all the swimmers performed
admirably in each of their races.
Of the dozens of children that
participated, Jairus Wong, Ashvin
Raju, Kaitlyn Tan, Perle Kenderes and
Rachel Wong emerged as overall
champions for their respective
age groups with their stunning
performances in the pool. They were
truly the golden boys and girls of the
day!
The Keppel Club Sports
Department would like to extend

thanks to the coaches from Waterjoy

everything was run smoothly, and

Editor’s Note
August has come around, and we hope you’re excited about this Keppel Links issue, as much
as we had fun putting it together for you!
Making a splash as our cover story is an iconic
ode to Keppel – the 46th Annual Swimming Gala, which
took place on July 10. Members, participants and staff
alike had an absolute blast at the event and based on
the results, Keppel may just be the breeding ground
for the next national champion (Joseph Schooling,
here’s looking at you!) Meanwhile, enjoy our photos
and coverage of the event, which saw both adults and
children battling it out on the pools.
Also, in this issue, we meet Keppel Club’s new
Sub-Committee members for the year 2016/17. We
certainly look forward to working with them in the
coming year.
The club’s annual Earth Week event will be held in
the fourth week of this month, and you and your family
are welcome to the Opening Ceremony on Aug 20.
The exhibition lasts till Aug 27, and this year’s
theme is inspired by the epic Star Wars films. Do get
your family and friends to come down for this annual
event.
Don’t forget to follow us on Instagram too –
@keppelclub and hashtag us at #becomeagreenjedi and
#kcearthweek2016 if you take photos at our exhibition.
We’d love to hear from you.
We would also like to take this chance to
congratulate our very own Peony Jade restaurant for
achieving the distinguished Michelin Bib Gourmand
award 2016.
And lastly, from all of us at Keppel, Happy 51st
birthday, Singapore!

Keppel Gourmet Golf 2016
A feast for foodie golfers
By Gilbert Wong
The scorching afternoon sun set the stage for the day’s events and
it matched the burning passion and excitement of our golfers who
were eager to begin a day of friendly competition at our Gourmet
Golf event held on June 30.
Conducted in a Texas Scramble
format, each player intended to play
their best to ensure their team’s victory.
The group of around 80 strong, led
by our House and Bar Convenor Khor
Chee Kok, were eager to commence
play and they wasted no time,
speeding off in their buggies as soon
as the briefings and announcements
were over.
Clear skies and bright sunshine
made for optimal playing conditions
for our competitors. The intense heat
only served to fuel their drive to win
as they teed off at each hole, and
there was never a dull moment as the
competition progressed.
The day’s festivities had only
just begun and the golfers were
looking forward to the gourmet part
of this event taking place later that
evening. A delectable spread of food
was generously provided by the club’s
own restaurants and Keppel Hall was
filled with happy revellers recounting
their earlier games and enjoying the
delicious cuisine on display.
With live music, an abundance
of food and drinks, and prizes given
out to enthusiastic quiz takers and the
winners of the tournament, the night

dinner.
ended on a high note with all
participants leaving happy and
satisfied.

National Inter-School primary competition 2016
Keppel Juniors fight hard for victory
By Kuk Hun Yi, Green Committee member
At the recently concluded 15th National Primary
School Championships 2016, Keppel Juniors battled
hard to emerge among the medallists at Marina Bay
Golf Course (MBGC).
Shannon Tan of MGS and Keppel played very well
to come in second in the Girls division with a gross score
of 79. She was matched in what could be termed as the
championship flight with Anne Fernandez (Marymount),
Rachel Sim (Nanyang) and Angel Lim (Horizon). Despite
going up against Fernandez who is a long ball hitter, often
out-distancing Tan by up to 50 metres in their drives, our
Junior was able to hold her own on their front nine (which is
MBGC’s back nine) with both carding identical 38s.
Trailing two down after hole six, Tan clawed a stroke
back to be only one down on hole eight. On the final hole,
she decided to go for broke by trying for a birdie, but her
attempt was unsuccessful and she had to settle for a bogie,
losing out to Fernandez by two strokes.
In the Girls team event, Tan combined scores with Jillian
Kuk, who came in with a gross score of 97, to clinch the
second place for MGS with a total combined score of 176.

HSBC Youth Golf Challenge 2016
Keppel’s Callista wins first leg of
tournament by landslide 16 shots
By Kuk Hun Yi, Green Committee member
The first leg of the HSBC Youth Golf Challenge for 2016 kicked off at Sembawang golf course
between June 21 and 23. The event was held in the last week of the mid-year school holidays for
many of the Juniors who attend Singapore public schools. A total of 73 local Juniors participated
in four divisions.
The renovated Sembawang
golf course is well-known for its
different elevations, hanging lies
and tight fairways and provided a
stern challenge for our Juniors.
Although the course is not
regarded as a long course, the fact
that only one of the participants
in the field shot under par is a
testimony to the difficulty of playing
on this golf course.
Keppel is proud that Keppel
Callista Chen receiving the Champion’s
trophy.
Juniors featured among the medallists
for all divisions played, and we will
continue to fly the flag high.
Callista Chen recorded a
three-day combined score of
223 (71, 73, 79) in the Girls “A”
division and won by a whopping
16 strokes over first runner up,
Denise Wong. In the Boys “A” and
“B” divisions respectively, Keppel’s
Andre Chong (227 – 78, 75, 74)
and Sean Lee (241 – 83, 80, 78)
emerged first runners up in their
respective divisions. In the Girls
“B” division, Keppel’s Angelica
Wu came in third runner up with
a combined score of 247 (82, 83,
82).
Other notable results included
Shannon Tan, who played in her
debut HSBC tournament and is
still in primary school. She played
a very commendable 247 (83, 77,
87) to come in fifth in the Girls “B”
division.
Other Keppel Juniors’ results:
• Jason Kuk – 6th in Boys “A”
division with combined score
of 234 (82, 75, 77)
• Justin Kuk – 8th in Boys “A”
division with combined score
of 236 (85, 78, 73)
• Desmond Kim – 10th in Boys
“A” division with combined
score of 238 (79, 79, 80).
• Nicole Mok – 5th in Girls
“A” division with combined
score of 246 (81, 86, 79)
• Taline Han – 22nd in Girls
“B” division with combined
two day score of 253 (128,
125)
Congratulations to all our
Juniors! Let us continue to spur
them on to improve as they
represent the future of Keppel
Golf.

Victory for Keppelites in tennis inter-club
Players from various clubs gathered over three weekends at the Tanglin Tennis Academy at Turf

Martha Young Cup for the annual Inter-Club Knockout Tournament.
The Keppel Club Men’s team

the Chua Cup (Men’s “B” Grade)
after defeating Oldham 2-1 in a
closely contested battle in the
finals. The deciding tie featured
Keppel Club’s Mr Marcus Tay and
Mr Alex Chew, and was a nervewracking experience for both
players and supporters as they
fought back from the brink of
defeat to win 6-3, 3-6, 11-9 after
being 7-2 down in the deciding
super tie break set.

SOAC 2016 – Keppel Juniors warming up again after a

Keppel Juniors take on Singapore’s
best in premier amateur golf event
By Kuk Hun Yi, Green Committee member
Keppel (past and present) Juniors participated in the recently concluded Singapore Open Amateur
Championship (SOAC), Singapore’s pre-eminent amateur event on Singapore’s golfing calendar,
between July 11 to 15, 2016.
Keppel Juniors, Tommy Tan,
brothers Justin and Jason Kuk,
Benjamin Yap, Nicholas French and
Tommy Lamb competed against the
best amateur golfers in the region
and acquitted themselves very well
considering the fact that our Juniors
are all teenagers and the youngest,
Benjamin, is only 14 years old.
Given the reputation of SOAC
as one of the region’s top amateur
events, participating countries like
Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia,
Philippines, Hong Kong, Chinese
Taipei, India and Myanmar sent
their top teams and national players
to compete against the best amateur
players from Singapore. Due to the
strength of the field, the midway
cut (153) was several strokes lower
than the previous year’s.
SOAC was contested on
SICC’s Island Course, which is
renowned for its sloping fairways
and slippery greens. To make
scoring under par more challenging,
the organisers changed the par
for Island course to par 70 by
changing two of its par five
holes to par four. To add to the level
of difficulty, there were substantial
rain delays on each of the days
of the competition, adding to the
challenge of playing the SOAC.
SOAC 2016 was eventually
won by Thailand’s Kamalas
Namuangruk with an aggregate
score of 4 under followed by
runner up Sangchai Kaewcharoen
with an aggregate score of 3 under.
Singapore posed a challenge by
leading the competition on Day
One (Joshua Shou) and Day Two
(Joshua Ho) with the highest
positioned Singaporean, James
Leow, coming in fourth at even
par.
The SOAC 2016 results for
Keppel Juniors are as follows:
• Tommy Tan – 38th position
(295 – 74, 76, 71, 74)
• Justin Kuk – 63rd position
(309 – 74, 76, 82, 77)
• Benjamin Yap – 66th
position (154 – 80, 74)
• Jason Kuk – 67th position
(154 – 78, 76)
• Nicholas French – 76th
position (157 – 77, 80)
• Thomas Lamb – 80th
position (162 – 81, 81)
SOAC 2016 was a great
experience for our Juniors, and it
augurs well for Keppel that we have
such fine young players. Onwards
and upwards!

Children’s Sports Camp 2016
Fun is in session!
By Gilbert Wong
Keppel Club’s annual Children’s Sports Camp has always been an exciting event for the children
to look forward to, and this year’s iteration was no different. With indoor soccer, tennis and
bowling lined up, they were guaranteed an engaging and fun way to keep fit while also learning
about teamwork and camaraderie. For some, it was their first time trying out a new sport as well.
Despite beginning bright and
early, the camp kicked off to an
exhilarating start and it took no time
at all for their enthusiasm, energy
and competitive spirit to shine
through in each of the activities that
were scheduled.
This year’s event took place
between June 20 to 22 and the
10 boys and seven girls were
shepherded into Keppel Hall to
be on time for camp registration.
Once everything was in order, they
couldn’t wait to get started and
flex those muscles of theirs in the
coming days. The camp’s itinerary
included balanced and nutritious
meals for lunch which ensured that
they would never run out of steam,
and different movies each day which
helped them to wind down and
relax after the tiring but enjoyable
games.
With the UEFA European
Championship happening during
this period, Indoor Soccer was
undoubtedly popular. Held in Keppel
Hall, the teams were quickly formed
and the excited little superstars were
eager to show off their footwork and
ball control skills as they battled it
out. In the heat of their matches,
their competitiveness was on display
and legs often became tangled
up in the process. Yet despite the
inevitable tussles that occurred,
they recognised that it was all in
the name of fun and were all smiles
throughout.
Tennis was a similarly lively
affair with the groups split between
outdoor court C and the indoor
court. Decked out in their tennis
gear and Keppel Club caps, with
some barely taller than the net, the
young participants grabbed their
rackets gleefully, eager to begin. The
patient and knowledgeable coaches
led the different stations and the
children took turns participating in
mini games, learning basic racket
techniques and using their newly
acquired skills against one another
in short matches. The boys were
especially rowdy and energetic as
they mimicked the grunts of some
tennis pros.

learning the basics of bowling.

Warming up with stretches before the
games begin.
When it came to bowling,
shrieks of joy joined the thunderous
cracks of collapsing pins which
chorused throughout the club’s
bowling alley. One by one, the
enthusiastic children tried their
hands at tossing colourful bowling
balls down the lanes under the
watchful eye and guidance of the
instructor. With a few quick lessons
and some effort, their balls flew
towards the pins as they cheered
each bowl on, urging the pins to fall.
After all, they were competing to see
who the big winners would be at the
end.
After the final few attempts
were complete and a short tea break
was had, the prize presentation
commenced. Tired but happy, the
winners couldn’t wait to receive
their prizes. However, there were
no losers at the end of the day upon
the conclusion of the camp, and the
children were in high spirits despite
having to say goodbye to their newly
made friends.
Patiently waiting in line to get some
delicious food.
