Leisure
What is the meaning of Culture in Nord-pas de Calais ?
Our culture is in our food, our traditions and way of life. But our culture is also our
history (Charles de Gaulle was born in Lille). Relive the Hundred Years War at the
medieval history centre in Azincourt, evoke the spirit of WWI in Arras, be awed by St
omer’s Notre-Dame cathedral or the baroque architecture of Béthune. Our Culture is
Art too. The fantastic city of Lille houses the Fine Arts Museum where you can rub
shoulders with Goya, Rubens and Donatello. An extensive choice of museums, visitor
centres and guided tours will help the visitor to uncover the region’s cultural secrets,
from the works of famous local artists such as Matisse, Watteau and Carpeaux to
pretty 18th century towns such as Douai and Cambrai, packed with art and history.
The Nord-Pas de Calais is great for the whole family, children, parents, grandparents. As
the closest region of France to Britain, it combines easy access with a complete change
of culture and language and there is much to do ! Even the journey is fun, starting with
a mini-cruise across the Channel or the excitement of crossing under the sea in the
tunnel. There are many child and parent friendly attractions in the region, from Bagatelle
or « Le Fleury » amusement parks to the science museum in Villeneuve d’Ascq. The
Fairy will lead you to child friendly attractions for rainy days and outdoor activities.
Wartime history
Shopping
The Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the Battle of Arras in 1917, the Battle of Dunkirk and
Operation Dynamo in 1940… The Nord-Pas de Calais has always been a major stake in the
conflicts which have shaped the European and World history. Traces of these battles remain
numerous: almost 650 military cemeteries pay tribute to the soldiers who lost their lives in
WWI and WWII. Many museums allow us to discover those painful chapters of our history
and remind us that peace and freedom are frail.
The Nord-Pas de Calais geographical situtation at the crossroads of Europe has always
guaranteed its reputation as a market region. Calais, Boulogne and Dunkerque are
some of the most famous shopping towns. But Lille and Arras and many more lively
towns also have plenty to offer the keen shopper in search of that relaxing French
town atmosphere. When time is short, you’ll find everything under one roof in some of
our numerous hypermarkets, shopping centres or factory outlet shops.
Coastal activity
La Côte d’Opale is a breathtaking 120km long stretch of fine sandy beaches, sparkling
waters and imposing cliffs that run all the way from Dunkerque to Berck-sur-Mer.
Watersports of every kind are well catered for, from surfing and sailing to sand-yachting
and speed-sailing. No fewer than ten seaside resorts in the Nord- Pas de Calais have
been awarded the child friendly status of « Stations Kid ». But if your idea of coastal
activity is relaxation, take care of your body in one of Nord-pas de Calais water based
health centres. From aquafitness to the beauty parlour, this is a « sport » to play alone,
with friends or in pairs and that everyone will be good at !
Outdoor pursuits
Some adresses for tourist accommodation will enable you to find to suit you in the
Nord-Pas de Calais; from the simplest to the most luxurious hotel, from town bed and
breakfast rooms to country gîte. You can be assured of benefiting from extra care.
Gastronomy
Let the wind caress your face and the breeze ruffle your hair as you canter on
horseback through the whispering Mormal forest, part of the Avesnois Regional Nature
Park and a nature lover’s dream come true. Or visit the lush secret garden of Les 7
Valleys, so called because of the seven rivers that run through the area.
Ramblers, hikers, riders and cyclists will discover over 1,500 km of signposted trails.
Take a picnic of fresh regional produce and stroll through the rolling wooded farmland
of Flanders and the quaint villages and hamlets dotted around St Pol-sur-Ternoise.

Where to sleep
A full list of where to sleep and gastronomy in the region can be found on pages 42-60
The old saying « you are what you eat » certainly applies to the Nord-Pas de Calais
region which has developped a warm and welcoming comforting style of food,
doubtlessly influenced by their Flemish, British and Picard neighbours.Endive
and shallots, ratte du Touquet potatoes, fresh or smoked garlic, Avesnois apples,
cauliflower from the St-Omer marshes and juicy strawberries from the village of Samer
are just a few of the products which grow in the region’s northern climate.

The region’s earliest Giants saw the light of day at the end of the Middle
Ages and are symbols of a town or city or of a district. They are part of
the collective memory, model citizens of their town or district.
The region’s belfries,
formerly
employed
as watchtowers, are
the proud symbols of
the power, might and
independence of our
towns and cities. On July
15th 2005, 17 belfries

from Arras. Born in 1891,
these two Giants come every

And let’s not forget the

In 1667,
66 Louis XIV wished to have a citadel constructed in Lille to watch
over the excessive behaviour of the population, to serve as a barracks
for his armies and to defend the city against attack by the Dutch. To
meet this three-fold aim, Vauban proposed the building of the “Queen of
Citadels”, a name still to this day given to Lille’s fortifications. The Citadel
is laid out in the form of a pentagon with each of the five sides including
a bastion shaped like an arrow and armed with cannons. From the air
it is possible to make out its triangular half-moon defences surrounded
by a water-filled moat. Inside is a veritable miniature town laid out to
accommodate around a thousand officers. After Lille, Vauban turned to
Le Quesnoy and Montreuil/Mer (two even finer works), Calais, Condé-sur
Escaut, Gravelines, Maubeuge, Cambrai, Bergues, Arras...3 centuries
later, the Nord Pas de Calais is still organising tours of its walled towns
and cities.

Practical Guide
Arras
Arras, the birthplace of Robespierre,
is the capital of the Pas-de-Calais
region. Its two huge town squares,
rebuilt after being destroyed in WWI,
were originally created over 800 years
ago. Surrounded by hundreds of
Flemish-style houses and shops, the
squares sit above a vast network of
tunnels, which can trace their history
from the French Revolution to WWI
when the British Army used them as
headquarters. The view over Arras
from the town hall belfry is stunning
and, on a clear day, you can see all
the way to the Vimy ridge and the
Canadian Monument.

La Maison de Robespierre
Robespierre lived in this house from
1787 until 1789, when he was
elected to the Convention at the
outbreak of the French Revolution.
His sister and younger brother lived here
until 1792. Today, it houses an exhibition
by the master craftsmen of Arras.

stairs) will take you to the belfry at the
top of the town hall, where you’ll be
afforded a magnificent view over Arras
and the surrounding area. You can also

Discover the treasures of Bergues,
from the belfry to the abbey of Saint
Winoc and the old pawnshop, which
is now the Mont de Piété museum.
Yellow brick façades are characteristic
of Bergue’s old buildings and the
town boasts over 5,000 metres of
impressive fortifications. This small but
colourful city nestling at the foot of the
town belfry is one of those Flemish
towns that time seems to have passed
by. Gourmet restaurants tempt passing
visitors to stay a while longer in ‘the

Béthune
Béthune town square is a stunning
example of Art Deco architecture,
although the central belfry leaves no
doubt that you are in the north of
France. The massive Town Hall was
rebuilt in 1920, the stonework on its
façade depicting the towns events and
triumphs, such as Croix de Guerre’
and ‘Légion d’Honneur’ medals, which
were awarded to the town and its
citizens for the courage and strength
displayed in the Great War.
The Belfry
The belfry was a gift awarded to the
people of Béthune for their loyalty
to the Crown. It was originally built
of wood in 1346 when it housed the
town’s bells and a prison cell. The
belfry burned down twice in 1346
and 1664 but was rebuilt both times.
It was destroyed by bombing in
1918 leaving only the 16th century
part intact. Today Béthune’s
centrepiece, and its bells still ring
out every hour on the hour.

The statue of the Six Burghers, Calais
Cathedral Notre Dame
The medieval cathedral was built after
a small wooden boat carrying a statue
of the Virgin Mary ‘miraculously’ sailed
into port one day between the years
633 and 636. The crypt is still visible
today. Abbé Benoît Haffreingue
(1785-1871) wanted to restore the
cult of Notre Dame and order the
construction of a new church, which
began with the rotunda in 1827.
In 1852, he decided to add a cupola
similar to that on St Paul’s in London.

Calais
France’s premier passenger port, Calais
is the nearest French town to England
and has been at the heart of centuries
of conflicts, including the Hundred
Years War and the famous encounter
of the Field of the Cloth of Gold. It was
also Emma Lady Hamilton’s asylum
lace-making looms were smuggled
here from Nottingham, an industry for
which Calais is still famous today.
The statue of the Six Burghers
(unveiled 3 June 1895)
Following his victory at Crécy in 1346,
Edward III of England laid siege to
Calais and set up a bridgehead in front
of the town. By August 1347, famine
had weakened the inhabitants and they
surrendered. Rodin’s statue depicts the
six ‘bourgeois’ who gave themselves
up to save their fellow citizens. Queen
Philippa de Hainaut, Edward’s French
wife, promised them a reprieve but
they were evicted from the town,
which remained British until 1558
when it was recaptured
by François de Guise.

Douai area
The first settlement in Douai dates back to
the 7th century and the town was granted
a charter by the Count of Flanders in 1188.
It is famous for the cloth trade, which
developed along the river Scarpe from
the 12th century. Belonging successively
to Flanders, Burgundy and the Spanish
Netherlands, Douai was annexed to France
by Louis XIV in 1667. When the cloth
industry started to decline in the 1560s,
10
the town magistrates asked for a university
to be built. The town still acts as Court of
Appeal for the region and has the highest
number of lawyers of any city in Northern
France. It was damaged during both World
Wars but still boasts impressive 18th
century architecture. Today, Douai is most
famous for its giants, the Gayant family,
who go on procession round the town on

Hesdin & St-Pol-sur-Ternoise
The rural areas known as Les 7 Vallées
and Le Ternois share a history of
Spanish invasion led by Charles V.
The famous battle of Azincourt took
place between Hesdin and St Pol.
Today, the area is largely agricultural.
The town hall in Hesdin
The town hall was built between 1563
and 1629 and is situated on Place
d’Armes, the main square. The belfry
was restored in 1875. The attractive
16th century, Renaissance-style
gatehouse was once used as a fort
and the original carvings are still visible.
The balcony bears the Spanish coat of
arms and the shields of Hesdin and the
Artois, while the pediment carries the
French coat of arms.

Lille
City of Art and History, elegant,
sophisticated and vibrant, the capital of
French Flanders has a proud heritage.
Many battles were fought to control
Lille, which specialised in textiles
and was strategically located at the
crossroads of major trading routes.
In 1667, Louis XIV conquered the
city and it passed from the Spanish
Netherlands to France. The lovely
17th and 18th century buildings and
monuments of the old city have been
carefully restored creating a judicious
blend of past and present.
Lille is also renowned for its shopping
and culture; the Fine Arts Museum
here has an impressive collection
and the many stores of Lille have a
rich diversity of goods, from designer
labels and modern shopping malls to
unusual boutiques and flea markets.
The ‘Queen of Citadels’
The building was carried out on the
orders of. Louis XIV and was comleted
in 1670. It formed part of a line of
strongholds between Gravelines,
Dunkirk and Maubeuge.Today, the
citadel houses an army barracks, which
is open to visitors during the day of
heritage.
Vieille Bourse
This is indisputably the town’s finest
building, constructed between 1652
and 1653 in Flemish baroque style.
The Lions of Flanders sculpted over
the doorways recall Lille’s days as an
outpost of the Netherlands.
Notre Dame de la Treille
This neo-gothic cathedral was built
in 1854 on the site of the former
feudal castle. The renovation work
in 1999 gave it a steel façade and a
rose window by the artist Kijno. A
thoroughly successful combination of
different styles.

The Wellington Quarry, Memorial of the Battle
of Arras
Beneath the streets of Arras lie impressive chalk
quarries which were dug out starting from the
Middle Ages. In 1914, Arras was destroyed and from
November 1916, the Allies began preparing for a
diversion operation before the Chemin des Dames
assault. The British had the brainwave of linking up
these quarries so that on the 9th April 1917, 24,000
allied soldiers could emerge from this underground
network and push back the German frontline. Walk
40 metres down a gentle slope towards a half-buried
building, and the “Wellington Quarry” appears. You

When Napoleon decided to invade England, he chose
Boulogne as his strategic starting point. He set up camp

DE RANDONNÉE
Walkers, cyclists and riders in the Heart of Flanders can now enjoy
their own packed lunches in our “cafés rando.
The Nord on foot
There are plenty of opportunities for walkers in the
Nord thanks to our 13 packs of leaflets and their 281
itineraries covering the whole of the department. All these
walks can be downloaded free of charge, in English at:
www.outdoorpursuit.fr
The Wormhout and district tourism association has awarded
accreditation to a network of cafés, brasseries and cafés restaurants.
The "cafés rando" network is a guarantee of quality facilities for walkers,
cyclists and riders who can, under the scheme, consume their own
packed lunches while purchasing a hot drink or a soup. Staff won’t pull
a long face, and even muddy boots are allowed! And for those little
unforeseen problems first aid and tyre repair kits are available.
In all there are 32 such cafés spread out over 14 communes from
Nieurlet to Herzeele along the valley of the Yser, where there are 100
walking, riding and cycling trails marked out by the Conseil Général du
Nord.
The 44 cycling routes in the Nord
You like cycling? The Nord can offer over cycle trails for
serious riders and families. Armed with our “Biking trails
for families and sporting riders” and our “Facettes du Nord
côté vélo” leaflets, you have 44 itineraries at your disposal
for exploring the varied countryside and terrain of the region.
All are available for download free of charge, in English at:
www.outdoorpursuits.fr
All these trails can be downloaded from the Nord Tourist Board
web site at

The 32 cycling routes in Pas-de-Calais
Each of these routes is named after a geographical or
historical feature, sometimes a legend of the department.
For optimal safety, they follow cycle tracks or roads with
little passing traffic. For each of the 32 cycle routes, special
signposting has been set up, showing the name of the circuit
and the direction to follow. At each departure point, a sign
post tells the cyclist about the difficulty of the route and the
distance and gives safety advice.

Françoise Droulez :
owner of « Sculptures et Jardin »
garden.
www.parcsetjardins-npdc.com
Although born in Lille, Françoise
Droulez has always been passionate
about nature and gardens. She
has been living in the Ternois for
30 years, a region known as the
Noëlle Le Guillouzic
“Garden” of Pas-de-Calais. Françoise
and her husband Jacques were warmly welcomed when they
arrived in the village. They discovered the inner richness of local
characters and also the local dialect! She has always been fond of
gardens, when she was a little girl she spent her time outdoors
shadowing the family gardener. Her husband, Jacques is a former
teacher and an artist. Their garden is an enchantment with a wide
variety of plants. Little by little they have introduced art into the
garden in the shape of Jacques’ sculptures. They now preside over
the Nord-Pas de Calais Parks and Gardens Association.
Their garden opens to public within the scope of the association.
“You have to open your garden as you open your house. People
should enjoy a delightful moment surrounded by nature”.
Françoise is a discreet hostess, she talks about the worries you
can have with plants and friendship begins… Gardens, plants
“are more moving than objects, you can talk, share and meet
people. The garden is the reflection of your soul”.
Parks and Gardens
There are 33 registered parks and
gardens in the Nord and Pas-de-Calais
region. Some belong to chateaux,
others to private houses. Some are
large and some are small, but they’ve
all been created from a labour of love
by garden enthusiasts who are keen to
share their treasures with you.

Children
Gaby has always been
passionate about two
things: life as a fisherman
and the port of Etaples. He
experienced his first tide
when he was 7: he was sick
Noëlle Le Guillouzic
for 48 hours but this did not deter him. At the age of
12, he spent all his free time helping the fishermen,
repainting the boats, mending the nets… he was by no
means an academic! He started as ship’s boy when he
was 15 on his father’s boat and then with his uncle. At
only 19, he and his 3 brothers had their own boat built:
“la Reine de la Foy 2”. They were the only family sailing
with 4 brothers together. After 25 years dedicating his
life to the sea, he decided to stop as his children had no
desire to follow the family tradition. He then trained to
be a guide in Maréis. He now shares his experience with
visitors, helping them to discover a profession that is like
no other. He always feels nostalgic when he recalls the
history of Etaples. In the 1970’s all the boats docked in
the port of Etaples but nowadays they all go to Boulogne,
France’s premier fishing port. But there are still many

Braderie-Brocante
The Nord Pas-de-Calais has a tradition
of flea and antique
markets. The region’s most
famous one is in Lille on the
first week-end of September.
Shop keepers empty their cupboards,
market salesmen
line the streets and everyone in
Lille who has something to sell
puts it on the pavement and
waits to barter with passers by!
Mussels are the top of the menu
and restaurants compete for the
largest pile of empty shells.

Originally from Lyon and an engineer
by profession, Delphine Larivière
changed her career and opened up her
bed and breakfast accommodation in
Lille. The large house dates from 1926
and is a delightful blend of modern
and contemporary styles. Simply by
following the lady of the house and
listening to her you will find yourself
transported into a totally different
world. The lounge is dominated by a light covered in handwriting
which serves as a visitor’s book on which guests can write about
their stay.
Upstairs, explains the lady guide, “each room has its own
heritage and story to tell”. And Delphine adds: “the things with
which our guests are surrounded have a family connotation”.
The intermingling of modern and contemporary styles brings out
the authentic character of the Maison Carée.

Just like a museum, the guests admire the contemporary

In the suites on the other side of the courtyard the décor is of
the theme of the sea and sailing. Globes, sailors charts and
Windsor-style furniture all recall long sea voyages. With rooms
perfect for a family or a group of friends, hosts and guests alike
steer a course for restfulness and sheer bliss. Some say that the
Maison Carée is more like a museum. Well, perhaps, but with
the warmth and friendliness of the people of Northern France,
in addition.

Régional Spécialities
Thierry Beine, one of
Valencienne’s emblematic
characters, welcomes you with
his warm and friendly “Hello”. In
his hotel-restaurant, once a 17th
century coaching inn, everything
is a reminder of an earlier age.
At the inn, you fancy that you
can hear the clatter of clogs
in the cobbled courtyard as in
the medieval times. The chef
prepares his grilled pork, a hose speciality, not to mention
typical regional dishes such as the famous langue lucullus, a
skilful combination of smoked beef and foie gras for which
Thierry is quite rightly renowned. He often visits the UK where
he organises cookery demonstrations.
The hotel side of the establishment has 16 rooms and is
equally authentic and cosy. In it s maze of corridors you feel
immersed in the historic and mysterious atmosphere and
could easily imagine bumping into a knight in armour, or the
house ghost! According to its proprietor, the ancient Auberge
du Bon Fermier is indeed haunted. But, fear not, according to
Thierry, “the phantom is harmless and only plays pranks”.
“ If he resticts himself to leaving a lucullus under my pillow,
that would be great”!
