Message From
Premier Ghiz
O
n behalf of the Province of Prince Edward Island, I would like to
extend warm congratulations and best wishes to the Royal Canadian Legion
on the occasion of the publication of this ninth edition of the War Service
Recognition Booklet. I would also like to take this opportunity to commend the
Royal Canadian Legion for its ongoing work on behalf of our veterans and their
families.
Islanders have a long and proud tradition of responding to the call
of duty both in times of peace and conflict. This particular publication will
serve as a lasting legacy to the commitment and dedication of Island veterans
who served our country during the two World Wars, the Korean War, and the
Peacekeeping and Afghanistan Missions.
Let us continue to honour the memory of those individuals who fought
to ensure the freedom we enjoy today.

Message from The President
This year marks the 200th anniversary of The War of 1812. The war was a defining moment in Canadian history;
laying the foundation not only for Confederation but for the modern nation we live in today, independent and free.
The Battle of Vimy Ridge remains an iconic event in Canadian history, fought from April 9 to 12, 1917. Thousands
of Canadians have made a pilgrimage to the Vimy memorial each year and it has remained a focal point for
Canadian war remembrance.
In the Dieppe raid of 1942, 6000 allied troops were involved, of these roughly 5000 were Canadian and the
remainder were British Commandos and 50 American Rangers. The Royal Canadian Legion Youth Track and
Field event took place from August 17-19, 2012. The athletes held a Dieppe ceremony at Cavendish beach on
August 20.
Our Canadian soldiers play a huge role in training the Afghan security force. It will be a period of some reckoning
for Afghanistan and to then decide their own fate.
The Royal Canadian Legion is the largest community based organization in Canada and continues to provide
community programs through volunteer efforts of our membership. On behalf of PEI Command Executive
Council, staff and Ladies’ Auxiliary, I extend a warm thank you to everyone who contributes to make this War
Time Recognition Booklet a success. Through your support The Legion can continue to develop and fund Youth
programs, programs to support our Veterans and Seniors and to ensure Remembrance continues.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.

For all of Your Recyclables & Beer Bottles

The Royal Canadian Legion
Prince Edward Island Command
It is the Veteran
It is the veteran, not the preacher,
who has given us freedom of religion.
It is the veteran, not the reporter,
who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the veteran, not the poet,
who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the veteran, not the campus organizer,
who has given us freedom to assemble.
It is the veteran, not the lawyer,
who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the veteran, not the politician,
who has given us the right to vote.
It is the veteran, who salutes the Flag,
who serves under the Flag,
Whose coffin is draped by the Flag.
We will remember them.

Forget Them Not
We’ve lined their boots all in a row,
And amongst them stand,
The saddest scene I’ll ever know,
Goodbye dear friend, goodbye!
Through mud and rain and battle blows,
We cried cursed prayers,
On blood-soaked clothes;
And from that wound his life did flow,
Please stay we begged, please stay!
There is a time that soldiers know,
When so many die,
That the pain and woe,
Is too much for the mind to hold;
Roll on your drums, roll on!
A band of brothers stand in their rows;
The empty boots still,
Where a life did grow,
Our friends have gone, no more to know;
Remember them always, remember!

IN FLANDERS FIELDS
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow**
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.
Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae
MD (1872-1918), Canadian Army
"In Flanders Fields," was written by Canadian physician and Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae while fighting in World
War I shortly after presiding over the funeral of a friend killed in battle. The poem was published in 1915 and put to
music in 1917, one year before Col. McCrea died. The poppies referred to in the song are of the flowers growing wild
on top of the hastily made cemeteries for the soldiers in the Flanders region between France and Belgium.
**Many believe the original poem was written "In Flanders fields the poppies grow", but most people know this line as "In Flanders fields the
poppies blow". On the Canadian ten dollar bill, the first few lines of the poem are written in small print. It was first printed as "poppies blow", but
a few years after discovering the mistake, it was changed to "poppies grow". In recent years it has been argued that the validity of this mistake is
unfounded and it has since been changed back to “as poppies blow”. Despite the dissagreements, few would argue that this poem is the most
recognized and celebrated war memorial poem ever written.

The Staff and Residents at the Dr. John M. Gillis Memorial
Lodge would like to commend The Royal Canadian Legion on
this War Time Service Recognition Booklet - Volume Nine.
It is significant that we remember the mission of The Royal
Canadian Legion in years to come.
It should remind us of the great
sacrifices many men and women made
in order to protect our great country
during times of war.
