2015 Fall Guidon - Hargrave Military Academy
Guidon
Fall 2015
for the Alumni and Friends of Hargrave Military Academy
Greetings Hargrave Family!
Welcome to the Fall 2015 edition of Hargrave Military Academy’s Guidon. Our
alumni magazine is created and published for the Hargrave family: our alumni,
parents and friends. Our intent is to provide information and compelling articles
that are of interest to you--our constituency. Additionally, we will be telling stories
from our past and today. If we are successful, we will also provide you with a
glimpse of the Mission of our Academy.
The mission of Hargrave is to develop Cadets who are men of character and contributing citizens within their
communities. Hargrave does this through a rigorous college preparatory education which instills a lifelong love of
learning. Our military program provides the framework for personal responsibility, integrity, and leadership. Our
commitment to physical fitness and Christian values prepares the cadets for success in life.
You can expect to receive two issues of the Guidon each year. One in the Fall, arriving in your homes (or in your virtual
home) around Thanksgiving, and the second will be published and distributed in the Spring or early Summer. The Fall
issue will also contain the President’s Report listing our fundraising success and totals and our generous giving family.
In this Fall issue, you will read about our “new” basketball program and the history of that sport at Hargrave. We will tell
you about the destination of our college bound seniors (another graduating class of 100% acceptance), new Board of
Trustee members, and faculty members along with articles of interest to all of our Hargrave family.
Your Academy is healthy and poised to continue to serve our country as a school that does not just educate but trains
leaders that will play a significant role in our Nation and the world. We will have over 250 Cadets at Hargrave this year.
We expect as our country continues to recover from the economic downturn and we make sound and effective decisions
that our enrollment will continue to grow. We have an excellent group of faculty, staff, and coaches, and we strive to get
and to keep this extraordinary collection of men and women.
We are focused on creating a culture of philanthropy that will bring pride to the Academy and perpetuate our traditions.
Please join the ranks of the many who are able to say “IGTH”! This is the theme for Hargrave’s Annual Fund for the
foreseeable future: I GAVE TO HARGRAVE! You will be hearing a great deal about this campaign. Be one of the many
who can say, “I Gave to Hargrave!”
So come see us! The campus is beautiful and reflects the beauty of southern Virginia all year round. On behalf of the
Trustees and all of us here at Hargrave please accept my most profound gratitude for all you do for this wonderful
institution.
Sincerely,
Doyle D. Broome Jr.

President’s Report
Guidon 1
Hello to the entire Hargrave Family!
It was great to see such a fantastic turnout for Alumni Weekend this past
Spring! This year we had a 60% increase in attendance from the previous
year! THANK YOU! The weekend started off that Friday with a strong
showing at the Annual Alumni Golf Tournament at The Danville Golf Club.
The weather was beautiful, and it was pretty impressive to see some of the
scores!
That night we had the annual Alumni Social at the Community Center in Chatham with a record
attendance. It was great not only to see so many Alumni but former and current faculty and staff. Some
folks there were Rick Cline, Danny Mills, Carl Burke, and Mary Tallent. It was great to catch up and
reminisce.
Despite the weather being uncooperative, there were breaks in the rain, and we still had a great parade
and other events here on campus. The grand opening of the Lankford House Museum at Hargrave was
well attended, and many enjoyed seeing the 107 year history of Hargrave on display. A big thanks to
the Alumni Board for all their hard work on this project! The second phase of the house renovation is in
motion and will be ready by Homecoming 2016. Again, thank you to all those that came back to Hargrave
this past spring, and I challenge each of you to bring a classmate with you this year. Let’s make 2016 the
biggest ever! More information will follow on reunion years and the events planned.
There are a lot of great and important projects taking place at Hargrave. We hope you have noticed an
increase in communication from us in the Alumni and Development Departments. Whether it be by mail
or email, we are working hard to keep you informed and connected to your alma mater. One campaign
you’re going to start hearing a lot about is IGTH, I Gave To Hargrave! This will be our annual fund
campaign theme for the foreseeable future. We aim to create excitement and pride by giving participation
from our Hargrave family: alumni, parents, and friends.
Best Regards,

We are so happy we found Hargrave and are so excited to see and experience the
positive changes in our son. The confidence he now has vs when he entered Hargrave
is terrific.
For your continued encouragement and support, we appreciate it so much. It’s hard
to imagine how far [our son] has come thus far over this summer under your guidance.
We even received an email recently from [our son] thanking us for all that he has
learned through Hargrave. We couldn’t be happier and prouder of his efforts. Thank
you again for everything.
... first day home from Hargrave he kept to his normal routine of making his bed and
straightening his room. We have tested his math skills and it is amazing how much
better he has gotten. We are thrilled and will consider Hargrave for future Summer
schools as well as 8th grade and beyond.

H
argrave alumni Andrew Kratz made headlines
this summer when his business received national
recognition. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce
awarded Triangle Rock Club the title of 2015 DREAM BIG
Small Business of the Year, which came with a $10,000 check.
Triangle Rock Club was selected from 100 Blue Ribbon Small
Business Award winners for exceptional business practices and
community involvement.
Kratz started Triangle Rock Club in 2007 in Morrisville,
N.C., along with fellow veteran Luis Jauregui. With a passion for
adventure, they knew it was the right business decision.
“When you have two skill sets – climbing rocks and
shooting guns – you are limited in your employment options
when you get out [of the military]. … It was a natural choice to
go to rock climbing,” Kratz said during an interview with the U.S.
Chamber of Commerce.
In 2012, Joel Graybeal joined the duo as a managing
partner and extreme growth continued. A second location was
added in Raleigh, N.C. in September 2013, and it was successful
from the start. Soon after, the Morrisville location expanded
to include 17,000 additional square feet of climbing terrain,
55-foot walls, and cardio, and weight rooms. The third facility in
Fayetteville, N.C. opened in November 2014.
Triangle Rock Club is the leading provider of climbing
experiences in the Southeast. In addition to climbing, the
facilities hold nationally ranked competitions and offer climbing
equipment rental/purchase, classes for all levels, and camps for
children.

The business plans to open at least three more gyms
in Chapel Hill/Durham, Charlotte, and the Triad region over the
next five years.
In addition to being named Small Business of the Year,

the Year in 2014.
“Tom Saunders was a well-known, well-respected
and well-liked member of the Hargrave Class of 1999,”
Hargrave President Don Broome said. “He had a great love for
Hargrave and for his Nation. He chose to serve the Nation and
demonstrated exceptional leadership deploying to combat
multiple times. He truly represents the best of our Hargrave
graduates. Tom was a treasure, and he will be sorely missed by
our Hargrave family and by our Nation.”
Dallas Campbell (Master Guns), former TAC Officer,
developed a close relationship with Saunders during his time at
Hargrave.
“As an employee you have an obligation to look after
kids as your own, you build bonds that way. This school has more
of a family type relationship. […] Losing Tom was shocking. I
loved him like a son; he even spent Christmas at my house. We
were close,” Campbell said.
Campbell describes Tom as being an honest and intense
leader. He was a dependable, hard working, all around good kid
who excelled at everything he did.
“His biggest attributes were honesty and integrity. He
was full of mischief, as any teenage boy should be, but he would
always admit if he did wrong and accepted the consequences,”
Campbell said. “He figured out that with hard work and
perseverance he could do anything he wanted. He excelled in
both academics and sports. Tom was involved with a lot of things
at school. He would help coaches with stats, help High Adventure
with gear, and help clean weapons after shooting… he was
always helping. He even focused on helping younger Cadets with
their uniforms […] his true essence was leadership” Campbell
said.
Saunders’ name was added to the stone at Hargrave
that memorializes fallen alumni killed in the line of duty. A
memorial service was held at Homecoming 2015 honoring
Saunders and his family.
Saunders leaves behind a wife, Danielle, their son,
Vaughan Thomas, his parents, Allen and Barbara, a sister, Anne,
and a brother, John (class of 03).

William “Fig” Newton ‘63
Outstanding Alumnus
Fig attended HMA from summer of 1957 and graduated in 1963. He is a native Virginian from
Fredericksburg, “America’s Most Historic City.” In the mid 60’s, Newton joined his family’s general
contracting business, founded by his father, and remained there until the mid 80’s when he moved
to North Carolina where he continued serving in the building industry until retirement. He continued
his education in the industry in related fields of CAD engineering design, construction management,
general construction, building energy analysis, and historic preservation. He is a life long learner and
proponent of “The Built Environment.” He serves as a volunteer with the U.S. Green Building Council.
Fig is the father of three children, two grandchildren and three great grandchildren and is married
to Terri C. Newton of Trinity, NC, where they reside. He is a member of the HMA Alumni Board. When a
Hargrave brother and classmate once stated “you are giving so much back,” Newton’s comment was “I
just ask myself what would Andy Todd do. It’s not what you give, but that you give back what you can.
What greater appreciation could I have for my parents than to give my loyal support to Hargrave, the
school that they felt would give a good foundation to their son.”
Fran Salman
Honorary Alumnus
Fran Salman grew up in Danville, VA, until her family moved to Rocky Mount, NC, in 1970. After
graduating from Wake Forest University, she worked in publishing in Washington, DC. In 1985 she
moved to Santiago, Chile, to teach English. There she met and married Rodolfo Salman, and they lived
in Santiago for 12 years. They now live in Cary, NC. Fran and Rodolfo have three children. Their second
child, Oliver, attended Hargrave for four years, graduating in 2009. In addition, her nephew Randall
Orwick graduated from Hargrave, as did her cousin Gerry Noell; another cousin, Walter Noell, was a
basketball coach and teacher.
“I am thrilled to be named Honorary Alumnus. As the mom of a former Cadet, I feel that this is my
school too. I have walked the campus. I have been on the barracks, stepped into the classrooms, and
worshipped in the chapel. During my son’s senior year, I learned exactly what Hargrave teaches when
I asked him what privileges came with his rank as Battalion Commander. He looked at me and said,
‘Mom, the privilege of rank is to serve.’ The privilege of rank is to serve. I may never have worn the
uniform, but I love this school!”
Charles “Fin” Gaddy ‘86
Distinguished Alumnus
Fin attended HMA from 1982-1985 . With his passion for fishing and boats evident at a very early
age, it wasn’t long before Gaddy entered the fishing industry. Gaddy is an owner/operator of the
Qualifier, a charter boat based on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. He was awarded Top Tagging
Captain of Atlantic Sailfish in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014, Top Tagging Captain of White Marlin in 2012
and 2013, Top Release Captain of Atlantic Sailfish in 2011 and 2012, Top release Captain of White Marlin
in 2012 and 2013, and Top Overall Tagging Captain in 2011 and 2012. These Awards are given out by
The Billfish Foundation, where Gaddy sits on the Board and held the position of Chairman in 2014. He
has also worked alongside scientists deploying satellite tags to study the patterns of Billfish migration
and study Billfish conservation. Gaddy lives in Manteo, North Carolina with his wife Nancy and his twin
sons, Charles and Brown.

HARGRAVE BASKETBALL:
NEW DIRECTOR, NEW GYM, NEW OUTLOOK
THOMAS MESSINGER
Fans that attend basketball games at Walter Davis Gymnasium this season will no doubt notice some impressive physical
upgrades to the facility, new bright LED lights, fresh paint on the walls, a renovated foyer, brand new baskets and supports and a
video-replay screen just to name a few. The gym renovation was the first of many improvements that newly-appointed Basketball
Program Director A.W. Hamilton has planned for the program.
“As well known and respected as Hargrave is because of the tradition and caliber of players we have had here over the last
twenty years, with the upgrades we have made, our facilities will only bolster our reputation and credibility,” Hamilton said.
Hargrave Basketball and A.W. Hamilton have become synonymous. After an outstanding high school career in Kentucky,
Hamilton attended Hargrave for a post graduate year, graduating in 2000. He returned to Hargrave as an assistant under Hall-of-Fame
Coach Kevin Keatts when his playing career finished, and has been coaching at Hargrave ever since. All told, he has been affiliated
with Hargrave for over 10 years, and knows how special the community here really is.
“There are very few places at any level where the administration, community, and athletic staff all are on the same page.
Fortunately for me, everybody has one common goal here, and the people that live in the area recognize the consistency we’ve had,
and have shown unwavering support,” Hamilton said.
Hamilton’s new position puts him in charge of all aspects of the basketball program at Hargrave, from top-to-bottom.
“Being here a total of eleven years, the pride and love I have for Hargrave makes this new position a perfect storm. I am
excited to build the high school and middle school programs up to where, year in and year out, these kids have a chance to compete
for championships. The more we are able to mold these young men through basketball, the better they will be prepared for life after
Hargrave.”
Throughout the Hargrave community, there is a palpable excitement as the basketball season gets underway. For current
students- whether they play basketball or not- they are looking forward to seeing success of the basketball teams at all levels.
”We get pumped for every home game. We want to get as loud as possible to throw the other team off. We want to have
the biggest home court advantage possible for every game. It’s really cool to see everyone coming together, cheering for the same
team, and it’s even better when we get a win because we all feel like we played a part in it,” Cadet Seth Collins said.
While fans are accustomed to seeing the Post-Graduate Team loaded with Division 1 talent, under Hamilton, the talent has
spread to the varsity, junior varsity and middle School level as well. The Varsity Team features a 7’0” center from Canada that has
already attracted multiple High-Major Division-1 scholarship offers as well as two other guards that currently hold scholarship offers,
16 Athletics
as well. The Junior Varsity level will get a boost as well with the influx of talent from the Varsity
level, and this is exactly how Hamilton designed it.
For the Corps as a whole, it is a chance to be part of something special, that will have a
lasting legacy at the school. It is a chance for the Cadets to have the feeling that they are part of
something greater than themselves- a feeling that Hamilton knows well and has made a priority
in his new position. Fan engagement, student attendance at games, on-campus tournaments, and
promotional events are all things that will become more frequent in the coming seasons.
“This is a really cool time to be coming into the basketball program. All the teams are as
good at they have ever been, and the upgrades to the gym are awesome. I know we’re on the verge
of something huge, and I’m just happy to be a part of it,” Cadet Ivan Cucak said.
With teams at every level poised to reach new highs, the community of basketball players
on campus is growing as strong as ever in conjunction. Younger players are dreaming about
competing at the Varsity level, planning their future years at Hargrave, and the steps they need to
take. It’s this type of long-term program view that is a priority for Hamilton.
“To know that I’ve gone through the same kind of grind as some of these huge NBA
players- lived in the same dorms, even had some of the same teachers....that’s awesome. My
teammates are already becoming my brothers here, and we’re going to have a bond through this
program for as long as we live,” Cadet Matthew Stevenson said.
“Having everybody on one accord from middle school all the way through the PG team is
all about preparation. Whether it is a job, a team, or a class, once you’ve been a part of something,
and have been taught the right way to do things, whether it is for months or years, you are going to
get better. We have a plan and system in place and are confident through our commitment, on and
off the floor, we can achieve great things in our programs,” Hamilton said.
With the physical improvements complete, the behind the scenes development in full gear,
and four teams ready to embark on what is sure to be one of the most successful campaigns in
school history, there’s only one thing left to do: play some basketball.
“I am as excited as I have been for any season since I’ve been here because from day one,
my staff and players have come in everyday with a “get better” mindset. So long as we play hard
and play together, the scoreboard will take care of itself,” Hamilton said.

Life of a Battalion Commander
A Former Cadet’s Point of View
Payne Nunn served as Battalion Commander of the graduating
Class of 2015. While at Hargrave, Nunn was involved in cross
country, wrestling, golf, and rifle. Nunn received numerous
awards including Cadet of the Year, American Vet., Colin Powell
Leadership Award, and the President’s Leadership Award.
Oliver Salman served as Battalion Commander of the graduating
Class of 2009. While at Hargrave, Salman served as Battalion
Sgt. Maj., was part of Alpha Co. winning Pres. Cup in 2006, and
was on Honor Roll every six weeks. Salman played football and
lacrosse.
What did being the Battalion Commander mean to you?
Being the Battalion Commander is not a burden or a weight, for
me it was a privilege. It was never about me or my position; it
was about the people I served and how I served them. It is a
responsibility worthwhile for those who wish to lead in service
to others.
In my eyes, the BC at Hargrave was the single point of connection
between the Cadets and the faculty/staff. Obviously there were
alot of Cadets who had personal connections with teachers, TACs,
and other staff members, but as the BC I felt my job was to best
represent the sentiments and concerns of the battalion. I suppose
it’s relatable to a Student Body President, but I always felt like
there was alot more scrutiny placed on the decisions the battalion
staff and I made than a typical school government.
What impact do you think being the Battalion Commander had on your future?
It certainly did not hurt, but that position should not be viewed
as a stepping stone for success. It is a long term obligation to
the future success of one’s peers and subordinates.
I think that any leadership position at Hargrave has potential
to affect a Cadet’s future, especially college acceptance. Most
universities have to sift through countless applications, so having
experience in a leadership position, regardless of what it is, has
potential to make an applicant stand out. As far as how it affected
my career, it definitely improved the way I handle decision-making
and how I interact with people. Any leadership position forces you
out of your comfort zone and builds confidence that you otherwise may not get in a typical high school setting.
What is the most important thing being the Battalion Commander taught you?
The position taught me how fulfilling it is to serve others and
to be a part of a goal or an organization bigger than one’s self.
It is easy to get caught up in the weeds of a situation but a
true leader will remain fixed on the long term goal and the big
picture of an organization.
20 Student Life
Politics and leadership. First and foremost, I couldn’t do anything
without the battalion staff. Keeping them informed and a part
of the decision-making process was extremely important. I also
had to meet with the company commanders regularly to make
sure they were aware of any events that the school had coming
up. The BC also has to meet regularly with the Commandant and
President to make sure that everyone’s intents and actions are
aligned. And finally, like any good politician, the BC has to stay out
of trouble and try to make everyone happy.

CREATING A CULTURE
OF PHILANTHROPY
AT HARGRAVE
Last year almost $400 billion was given philanthropically in our great country. There are fewer
and fewer State and Federal dollars available for
non-profit organizations, thus the flourishing culture
of Philanthropy. This government support cannot
be counted on to return, so the people of the United
States are responding. Almost 90% of the philanthropic dollars that change hands in our country
comes from individuals. That is an amazing statistic
and says so much about the people, not just in this country but
all over the world. I believe it is an inherent characteristic of all
humans to be philanthropic.
This culture is evident at Hargrave in so many ways.
You see it within our internal and external family. I ran across a
quote the other day from the 1961 Valedictorian speech at VMI.
It has made a very strong impression on me. Jonathan Daniels
remarked, “I wish you the decency and the nobility of which
you are capable.” I interpret that as a challenge to all to be the
best you can possibly be with the gifts God has bestowed upon
each of us. I think it is the essence of philanthropy because one
cannot truly show practical kindness and helpfulness to others
without achieving their intended capability.
The same can be said for Hargrave as an institution; an
Academy made up of people practicing philanthropy everyday.
Our Cadets have formed a Development Club where they will
learn the basics of fundraising and philanthropy and what it
means to society. They will engage in community service activities that will help advance their favorite not-for-profit! They are
reaching out to Chatham Hall to see if they would be interested
in working with them and having a joint club, that way they
could work together for both schools! How cool would that be?
I would hope to see philanthropy become a part of Hargrave’s
academic curriculum.
Hargrave’s development plan for this year is all about
consistant and persistant communication. We will be segmenting our constituency, which will allow us to have the most
personal touch possible in these communications.
Our central theme is to recover and discover new
donors at all levels. 21 years ago our annual fund was $661,000,
and this past year we reached only $383,000. There were well
over 1,000 donors then, and we had only 475 in the fiscal year
ending May 31, 2015.
So we are launching our IGTH Campaign….I Gave To
Hargrave! We have created t-shirts and stickers that you will
see everywhere as Hargrave alumni, parents, and friends come
CRAIG ROGERS
home to the supporting family.
Our Sabre Club will be the heart of all giving
and we are launching our “Be a Sabre Get a Sabre”
Campaign this year. We welcome new Sabre club
members and ask last year’s members to rejoin by
giving or pledging, and then GET A Sabre! Just one
new family recruited into the Sabre Club would grow
this group exponentially!
Sabre Club levels are as follows:
Sabre Club Level $1,000 - 4,999
Sabre President Level $5,000 - 9,999
Sabre Chairman Level $10,000 - 24,999
Sabre Benefactor Level $25,000 +
We have had great success raising money for capital
projects and needs for the Davis and Grant Gyms. With the
formation of our new basketball program headed by Coach A. W.
Hamilton we will showcase our basketball teams in an amazing
facility...new lights, new goals, new lobby, new scorers table
and more. The Grant Gym is seeing refurbishments and will be
more supportive not only to basketball but to many other indoor
athletic activities. Thanks to the donors of these projects and to
those that are in the consideration phase.
We also have completed the renovation of Delta
Company Barracks 500 and 600. The truly are fantastic...ask a
Cadet! This work was all done from the benevolence of Hargrave alumni, parents, and friends. A special thanks and kudos
to the Hargrave facilities team led by Chris Warren for their truly
extraordinary work to complete the Barracks work. Next on the
list is Alpha Company Barracks, and we already have gifts under
serious consideration.
So a Culture of Philanthropy is beginning to grow here
at the Academy, and we can’t see Hargrave truly reach its potential without the decency and nobility of each one of you.

Barracks Receive
Renovations
Cadets living in Barracks 500 and 600 were welcomed with many updates to their living quarters.
Numerous renovations were completed on each deck, making an improvement in the quality of life for Cadets,
while making Hargrave more energy efficient in the process.
Updates include new double pane energy efficient windows, tile floors, doors and door frames, bunks
and mattresses, and new chest of drawers, desks, and chairs. Additional repairs include patched and repaired
walls, completely repainted rooms, updated sinks and plumbing, single bulb lights with T-8 dual bank lighting
on motion timers, and freshly painted hallways with new tile floors.
Renovations to Barracks 100 and 200 will take place when funds are available.

WEEKEND OF SERVICE
BEN WALL
It was a beautiful September weekend this year as Hargrave alumni traveled from
all over the country back to Hargrave for the Fifth Annual Weekend of Service!
The weekend was kicked off with a get together at one of Chatham’s popular
restaurants, El Cazador. Many not only enjoyed the great food and beverages, but catching
up with fellow alumni. Hargrave President, General Don Broome and his wife Donna were in
attendance along with the Chief of Staff, Tim Oditt and his wife Jennifer. It was truly a great
evening of fellowship for all that were there.
Early the next morning some arose from staying here on campus while others
drove in from area hotels. The alumni, faculty, and staff members were treated to a five star
breakfast in the Mess Hall, thanks to the Alumni Board. Mr. Rick Riley ‘76, President of the
Alumni Board, greeted everyone followed by an update on current goings-on at Hargrave
by General Broome. After breakfast everyone went to their assigned locations, and the
work day began. The Second Phase of the Lankford House
Museum began. There was pressure washing at the chapel,

painted and trees trimmed. Alot was accomplished!

SHOW YOUR HARGRAVE PRIDE!
We need to get 450 paid applications to start the process of getting a Hargrave license plate. After we get 450
people that express interest, we can get them to fill out the application and pay the fee. The cost of the license
plate is $10 for a non-personalized plate or $20 for a personalized plate. After we get the paid applications,
then we need to submit the design for the license plate to the DMV. Delegate James Edmunds from Halifax
has agreed to sponsor the license plate and get it through the General Assembly. Ideally, we need to get the
paid applications in by the end of this year, then we could get our license plate passed in the 2016 General
Assembly session. Please see the forms in the “files” section of the “HMA license plate” Facebook page for
more information.
