Global 500®. Operating our core business in the Upstream and Downstream
sectors, we have a presence in more than 60 countries since we were first
incorporated in 1974. We are among the top five oil and gas companies (in

UPSTREAM
Maximising Resources for Growth
PETRONAS’ Upstream business explores, develops, produces and monetises
oil and gas resources both domestically and internationally. We are a fully
integrated business across the oil and gas value chain with a broad portfolio
of resources and playtypes in 22 countries. Our capability and track record of
successful onshore and offshore developments in oil and gas have earned us
reputable operatorship in many ventures across the world.
As a resource owner and host authority in Malaysia, we are responsible for the
effective management and sustainable development of the country’s oil and
gas resource base. Our successes in upstream efforts in Malaysia are realised
through partnerships with oil and gas majors, through best-in-class production
sharing contracts (PSCs) and innovative risk service contracts (RSCs). RSCs
strike a balance in the mutual sharing of risks with fair returns. PETRONAS
assumes the role of project owner while contractors are service providers
with equity share in the RSC. Upfront capital investment is contributed by the
contractors according to their equity share and payment received upon first
production.

As an operator, we aim to maximise upstream value, sustain production and
enhance prospectivity of the nation’s acreages. We have explored some of the
world’s most challenging terrains and temperatures to secure new reserves.
Additionally, we conduct deepwater exploration, entering into highly complex High
Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) reservoirs and wells with high CO2 content
to enhance our yields. Our growth portfolio includes unconventional oil and gas
which include shale and coal bed methane. Today, we are among the world’s
first in maximising recovery of discovered fields with Enhanced Oil Recovery
(EOR) efforts. Cutting-edge technologies are applied alongside new strategies to
rejuvenate brownfields, extracting maximum value from existing reservoirs.

With more than three decades of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) experience and
a solid track record as a reliable supplier, our LNG business has successfully
delivered more than 8,400 cargoes to over 20 countries worldwide. The
PETRONAS LNG Complex is among the world’s largest LNG production facilities
in a single location, with a combined capacity of 25.7 million tonnes per annum
(mtpa) and 99.1% plant efficiency. Our strategic expansion includes shale gas-toLNG in Canada and one of the world’s first coal bed methane-to-LNG projects in
Gladstone, Australia.

In addition, construction of one of the world’s first Floating Liquefied Natural Gas
facilities puts us at the forefront of gas liquefaction and production. Alongside
efforts to expand our capacity, PETRONAS will continue to leverage on long-term
oil-indexed LNG contracts, supplying primarily traditional buyers in East Asia,
while enhancing energy trading activities, diversifying supply sources and driving
marketing expansion.
In consistently delivering some of the world firsts - pipelines, platforms and
projects, we have brought oil and gas onstream ahead of schedule, providing
rapid return on investment for our partners, stakeholders and investors. Some
patented technologies which improve production yields, enhance operational
efficiency and deliver exacting results have also been commercialised. From CO2
removal membranes to solids removal and Water Alternate Gas (WAG) oil recovery
methods, we continue to make breakthroughs in technology and engineering.

DOWNSTREAM
Building Upon Our Achievements
PETRONAS’ Downstream Business plays a strategic role in enhancing the value
of Malaysia’s oil and gas resources through our integrated operations. Our
diverse activities include the refining, trading, and marketing of crude oil and
petroleum products locally and internationally, as well as the manufacturing
and marketing of petrochemical products.
Under the refining portfolio, PETRONAS owns and operates four refineries with
a total refining capacity of 500,000 barrels per day. Three of these refineries are
located in Malaysia, of which two are in Melaka and one in Kertih. PETRONAS
also owns a refinery in Durban, South Africa through its majority shareholding
in Engen Petroleum Limited.
Set to be a major oil and gas hub in the Asia Pacific, the world-scale Refinery
and Petrochemical Integrated Development (RAPID) Project represents the
largest integrated refinery and petrochemical greenfield development in a
single location at the Pengerang Integrated Complex in Malaysia. The project
will house oil refineries, naphtha crackers, petrochemical plants as well as a
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) import terminal and a regasification plant.

CORPORATE SOCIAL INVESTMENTS
Enriching Lives
We strive to inspire and empower society wherever we operate through sustainable initiatives
which focus on education, capability and the environment. PETRONAS has consistently carried out
various education and capability building community and outreach programmes as well as societal
contributions in times of need for the benefit of the people and nation in Malaysia and abroad.
Education and Capability Building
Knowledge is power which liberates and unlocks human potential; it inspires, fires up the imagination
and shows people what is possible; and it gives people the ability to strive towards excellence.
Our education platforms include Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), Institut Teknologi Petroleum
PETRONAS (INSTEP), Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM) and PETROSAINS which provide a sustainable pool
of talents for the oil and gas industry per se as well as related fields.
Among our signature education sponsorship programmes is Program Sentuhan Ilmu PETRONAS which
provides strong academic foundation for underprivileged and borderline students in communities
where we operate. The programme aims to improve their confidence and self-esteem, setting them to
excel both academically and socially.
Social Development
A developed society is the key towards a nation’s success. As a responsible corporate citizen,
PETRONAS continuously strive to contribute towards the betterment of the people and community.
Our efforts are realised through sustainable societal initiatives that bring long-term benefits to the
people.
26
Program Sentuhan Kasih
27
Initiatives that are being carried out locally include Program Sentuhan Kasih
PETRONAS, aimed to improve the living standards through socio-economic
development and disaster/crisis initiatives; and Program Kenali Anak Kita
PETRONAS, aimed to raise awareness and equip parents with the knowledge on
ways to identify and prevent substance abuse, including drugs and alcohol, among
their children.
In preserving the arts, we established the PETRONAS Arts and Culture Grant, Galeri
PETRONAS and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra to nurture the appreciation
of arts and music among the society. Abroad, the Yetagun Socio-Economic
Development Programme in Myanmar, school refurbishment programmes and
mobile basic healthcare services in Iraq are among the few initiatives undertaken
to uplift the living standards of the communities in the areas where we operate.
Environmental Conservation
We are fully committed in our efforts to conserve our natural heritage. Through
our various environmental initiatives, we support key environmental initiatives
which strive to protect the ecosystem for future generations.
Joining hands with Yayasan Sabah, PETRONAS initiated and supports the Imbak
Canyon Conservation Area (ICCA) effort to preserve the rainforest’s unique
biodiversity by promoting public awareness, environmental education and
community outreach.
PETRONAS also supports mangrove reforestation efforts in Peninsular Malaysia,
Sabah and Sarawak. In the east coast region of Malaysia, our conservation efforts
continued with the Eco-Care programme for the reforestation and rehabilitation
of ecologically-sensitive mangrove habitats, as well as that of coastal vegetation
